Dallas Frasca’s new solo era

FROM humble beginnings in Wangaratta, Dallas Frasca has made it to the big stage, performing her music for audiences across the country and releasing a new album.

With a music career spanning almost two decades, Ms Frasca is entering a new solo era with her upcoming album, Force of Nature, which will blend rock and blues sounds.

She decided to do the album a couple of years ago after she found her own voice and wanted to create something new.

“I had an enormous epiphany where I was overcome with a feeling that it was the right time to put a solo record out,” Ms Frasca said.

“The album’s quieter moments hint at a new, more compelling frontier for me, maybe suggesting an evolution in my sound and song writing.”

Ms Frasca said she began to obsessively write and record music all across Melbourne.

“Recording Force of Nature was an intense and deeply personal process,” she said.

“I recorded it across six different studios in Melbourne including the piano for The Wind Blows in my loungeroom aka ‘Lady Luck Studios’, and you can hear the birds chirping outside throughout the recording.”

VET CORNER Heart disease in dogs

HEART disease affects about 10 per cent of all dogs.

If heart disease is diagnosed early and proper treatment is initiated, dogs can live a longer and fuller life.

Heart problems in dogs can be present from birth; this is termed congenital heart disease.

More commonly, disease develops over the dog’s lifetime, this is known as acquired disease.

Acquired heart disease accounts for an estimated 95 per cent of all heart conditions in dogs.

Causes of acquired heart disease in dogs include:

• Valve defects (e.g. myxomatous mitral valve disease)

• Cardiac muscle disease (e.g. dilated cardiomyopathy)

• Heartworm Heart disease can progress to heart failure.

Heart failure occurs when the body can no longer compensate for the disease within the heart.

At this point dogs start to show signs such as laboured or fast breathing at rest, fainting, reluctance to exercise, tiring more easily, coughing, poor appetite, weakness, lethargy and weight loss.

While there is no cure for heart failure, it can usually be managed with medication and care.

With early intervention, we can also delay the progression of heart disease to heart failure.

with Dr Emily Foss,Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic

Your veterinarian will assess your dog’s heart at every annual health check.

Further imaging such as an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) or chest radiographs may be recommended for further investigation if heart disease is suspected.

If you have any concerns regarding your dog’s cardiovascular health please contact your local veterinarian.

EARLY AIR MAIL

THE Melbourne Herald arrived in the most unconventional way in Beechworth on this day in 1930.

The edition of the paper carried a feature of Beechworth as a tourist resort , and at noon on July 10, 1930, an aeroplane appeared above the town, and from the skies the previous evening’s Herald rained.

The round trip from Melbourne was flown by pilot officer Kinnear.

He left Essendon at 10am, arrived over Beechworth at noon, then flew on to Stanley to drop more Heralds in the school grounds, arriving back in Melbourne just after 4pm.

Needless to say, a copy of the Herald of Wednesday, July 9, at one and half pence per copy, was a souvenir not to be missed.

Do any copies survive today?

Still plenty to do on snowy mountains

THE Special Olympics are coming to Mt Buller with the qualifying events for the 2025 Italy Games happening next week.

The opening ceremony will be on Monday, July 15 and the qualifiers will conclude on Wednesday, July 17.

Mt Buller has plenty of snow for tobogganing and snow play and the Skyline and Gliders parks are open for featureloving skiers and riders.

There is fun to be had at Mt Hotham before the rain comes, with six lifts open and 20 trails freshly groomed.

Advanced skiers will be able to enjoy Heavenly Valley and there are plenty of other areas for lesser experienced skiers to enjoy.

The groomers have been hard at work at Falls Creek to ensure great conditions on the slopes.

Ten of the 15 lifts are currently open and all activities - apart from tobogganing at Windy Corner and scenic chairlift rides - are available.

There still isn’t enough cover at Dinner Plain or Mt Buffalo for tobogganing but there is

still plenty of opportunity for sightseeing and snow play. Both rain and snow showers can be expected throughout the week on all of the slopes. Chains are required to be carried for all resorts and fitted where instructed.

Natural home remedies to help with the common cold

AS the seasons change and winter sets in, the common cold often makes its unwelcome appearance, leaving many of us searching for relief from its symptoms.

Natural remedies, that we all have in our pantry, offer gentle alternatives that have been passed down through generations.

Here are some effective natural home remedies to alleviate the discomfort of a common cold:

1. Honey and lemon:

A classic remedy, honey and lemon provide soothing relief for sore throats and help boost the immune system.

Mix a tablespoon of honey with freshly squeezed lemon juice in warm water to create a comforting drink.

Honey’s antimicrobial properties combined with vitamin C-rich lemon can help reduce throat irritation and coughing.

2. Ginger tea: Ginger is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and immuneboosting properties.

To make ginger tea, steep fresh ginger slices in hot water for 5-10 minutes, then strain and enjoy.

This warming beverage can help relieve nasal congestion, reduce inflammation, and ease nausea often associated with colds.

3. Garlic:

Garlic is a potent natural antibiotic with antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infections.

Crush a clove of garlic and let it sit for 10 minutes to acti-

system’s fight against the virus causing the cold.

6. Eucalyptus oil:

Eucalyptus oil is often used in aromatherapy to relieve congestion and promote easier breathing.

Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to hot water and inhale the steam, or dilute it with a carrier oil (like olive oil or Almond oil) and apply it to the chest to ease congestion.

7. Rest and hydration:

While not a specific remedy, adequate rest and hydration are crucial for recovery from a cold.

Ensure you drink plenty of fluids like water, herbal teas, or electrolyte-rich drinks to stay hydrated.

Rest allows your body to divert energy to fighting off the virus and healing.

These natural remedies offer gentle yet effective relief from the symptoms of a common cold.

Dallas Frasca’s new solo era

■ From page 1

As she delved deeper into the album, Ms Frasca collaborated with friend, Andy Baldwin, who she has worked with on three previous albums and said she would not have achieved this without him.

“It was tricky figuring out how to record the album when it was only me, and Andy’s playful and adventurous spirit brought a touch of genius to the plate every day,” she said.

“He is such a generous collaborator, when I heard the mix for the opening track on the record, I cried.”

Ms Frasca initially became interested in making music after seeing the film Crossroads at age 13.

She said the film is what lead her on the path to discovering blues music and es-

pecially the Mississippi Delta blues style slide guitar.

“The soundtrack was composed by Ry Cooder, and I was so taken away by the music in that film that I faked my first sickie from school and watched the famous guitar duel at the end of the film probably 20 times,” she said.

Years later, she got to meet musician and one of the leading actors in the film, Steve Vai.

She met him at Bluesfest when they were both touring and said it was amazing to thank him for putting her on the musical path she still follows today.

“Backstage isn’t for fans, but I definitely had a fangirl moment meeting him,” she said.

“He was almost like a myth to me because I’d watched him in that movie so many times.

“I posted the photo of me and Steve on Facebook a few years ago and told the story, and a fan got the photo printed on a coffee mug for me, so every day when I drink out of the me and Steve Vai coffee mug.”

One of Ms Fraca’s favourite parts of making music is the connection she feels with the audience when performing.

This especially rings true when she returns to her hometown in Wangaratta to perform in the North East.

Ms Frasca said she particularly loves playing at the Moyhu Pub as it allows her to feel connected with her community and always feels it’s a

celebration when she plays there.

“The Moyhu Pub has built the most epic bush stage I’ve played on in North East Victoria and I can’t wait to go back again,” she said.

“It’s always like a family reunion of sorts, so many old friends, family and locals.”

Growing up locally, Ms Frasca has become passionate about playing in regional venues and promoting local artists.

“The value that live music can bring to the venues and community in regional areas is undervalued,” she said.

“I know what it meant to me as a kid and I always love creating opportunities for the incredible talent of emerging and established artists in the area for a kickass line-up as

FEATURE STORY

there aren’t a lot of venues to play.”

Alongside her new album, which will be released on July 19, Ms Frasca will be embarking on a national tour, visiting every state in the country starting in Western Australia.

She will also have a concert date at the Moyhu Pub on September 20 where she will be playing alongside one of her idols Jo Jo Smith. To pre-order her album and grab a ticket to her Moyhu show, visit dallasfrasca.com.
