BEECHWORTH’S Lucy Tozer is always ready with a bright smile and a friendly chat for those she meets. But beneath the mother of two’s grin is a passion and determination to help others, spurred on by the tragic loss years ago of her son Cristian from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Though born early, at 28 weeks, Cristian proved to be a fighter and by the time he left hospital, was a healthy seven pounds and growing well. But all that changed three and a half weeks later when Lucy discovered her son was not breathing. “The coroner said he was a fat, healthy baby, and it was a classical SIDS case,” she said. “He just looked like he was sleeping. “That’s when I decided to become a parent support worker for SIDS and Kids.” Through the years Lucy has helped and counselled numerous people going through SIDS bereavement, both in the North East and across Australia. Because much of her work can be done over the phone, she routinely helps people hundreds or thousands of kilometres away. Lucy said “people are really angry to start with”, until they realise that she has been through a similar situation to them. “All of a sudden, they open up,” she said, stressing that the trauma of SIDS can have an continued page |
