AFTER humble beginnings 20 years ago, the King Valley Art Show has grown from a grassroots art exhibition to a hugely popular celebration of art with a high profile.

And it has touched the lives of all involved.

This year’s judge, Myrtleford artist Jim van Geet, is among those who have been involved in the show since its beginning, and said it was essential ingredient in the “appreciation of arts and culture in the North East region”.

He said he was passionate about the role of art in society, adding that it expresses humanity and feeds the soul.

“Art is what makes us as a society,” Jim said, happy to have seen the show grow over the years.

“You start things, you don’t know how far they’ll go.

“It’s become an extremely professional and well-oiled machine.”

King Valley artist and current art show committee president, Anita Laurence, became involved in the show in the year 2000 by entering her art, and her involvement has grown from there.

“Getting involved in the community is what it is about,” she said.

“We get enjoyment out of giving other artists opportunities to enter their work.

“The event brings art to our doorstep.”

Anita said she was grateful for all the friendships she had made through the show over the years, as well as for the support shown to the show by community members and local businesses.

“It is held in high esteem by lots of people,” she said.

For Natalie Pizzini, who was involved with the King Valley Tourism Association at the time of the inception of the event, the show is a special part of her life. continued page |

Consumers warned about To Mum, with investment scams love ASIC urges the public to be wary of cold callers claiming that their investment proceeds have been stopped by ASIC and are being held for them in a trust.

These calls are being made by individuals based overseas and are scams.

ASIC warns anyone who receives unexpected contact in this way or a similar manner to simply hang up or delete the email and block the sender.

These scams request that individuals provide further funds while their profits are being held in a trust by ASIC. ASIC has recently seen an increase in complaints about this particular scam.

If you think you have been a victim of this scam or believe your account may have been compromised, you should contact your bank or financial institution immediately.

ASIC Deputy Chairman Peter Kell said, “These scams are constantly evolving and are becoming more sophisticated in their efforts to convince unsuspecting consumers.

“Once the money paid to these callers goes overseas, it is almost impossible to recover.

“We strongly urge consumers to be wary of these scams and to be extremely cautious of any follow up communication.”

HANG UP: Beware of cold calling phone scams.

Protect yourself If you receive an unexpected phone call or email claiming you are entitled to reclaim money for a fee, hang up or delete the email and block the sender.

Never send money or give your financial details to someone you don’t know and trust.

Keep in mind that government departments and financial institutions would never ask you for your personal

details via unsolicited email or text message.

If you’ve provided your bank account or credit card details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately.

THIS Sunday is Mother’s Day, a very special day on the calendar.

Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world and is on the second Sunday in May in Australia.

My Mum lives near the south coast of Western Victoria, and we only get to see each other a few times a year, although we talk weekly on the phone.

Our weekly phone calls are dominated by the happenings in the garden.

It’s been a few years since mum has been to my place so I was very pleased when Mum said she was coming up for the weekend, so we got to celebrate Mother’s Day together, albeit a couple of weeks early.

Mum is a keen gardener, and even though she lives in a unit with a small yard, she grows vegetables, succulents and flowers in the garden, in various containers and indoors.

Each year it is a competition as to who picks the first home grown tomato, or who has the first bulb to flower.

When mum arrived, one of the first things we did was take a walk around my garden, chatting about the various plants, my successes and failures.

I had lost some due to the summer heat and to grazing animals which escape the confines of our fences.

I was secretly pleased when mum saw my pink Nerines in flower as hers are yet to flower.

We visited a local nursery, where we had a coffee and cake, then checked out the range of plants on offer.

As Mother’s Day is near, the nursery had many colourful blooms on display, including of course, Chrysanthemums, Cyclamen and Camellias.

Next stop was a visit to the Albury Botanical gardens, where we strolled around admiring the beautiful autumn colours of the changing leaves on the trees and the vast displays of gardens.

This has always been a family favourite and something we do on a regular basis whenever we are together.

It was a beautiful day with my beautiful mum.

The fuss about Ferrets FERRETS are an increasingly common pet in Australia, making fun family companions or being used for hunting.

Ferrets weigh between 1-2 kg and come in a range of colours.

Related to weasels, otters and badgers, ferrets differ from these animals as they are fully domesticated and rely on humans to provide their food and general welfare needs.

Being carnivores, they require a high protein, highly digestible, low fibre diet.

An alternate option to the hard to find commercial ferret food is a high quality dry kitten food.

As with all pets, there are a number of potential health problems to consider.

Annual vaccination for distemper should be done in all ferrets.

This can be a fatal disease, causing signs from skin irritation to coughing, sneezing and discharge from the eyes.

Ferrets, just like dogs can suffer from sarcoptic mange mites.

This mite causes dark crusts around the feet and nails often

being referred to as footrot.

Ferrets are also susceptible hosts to heartworm and preventatives should be considered.

Naturally inquisitive animals, ferrets enjoy enclosures filled with tunnels, ladders and furniture.

It is, however, this inquisitive nature that can get ferrets into trouble with foreign body obstruction from chewing plastic being a common veterinary emergency.

It is also important to “ferret proof” the house closing off access to any potential escape routes or areas that could be hazardous, including electrical cords.

Desexing female ferrets is important in not only preventing unwanted kits (baby ferrets) but reduced the risk of a number of serious and often fatal conditions.

Females are induced ovulators,which means they will remain on heat until they are mated.

This can potentially lead to a fatal reduction in red blood cells.

The continual heat cycle may

also lead to increased levels of oestrogen and subsequent fatal toxicity.

Desexing of hobs (males) and jills (females) will also reduce the odour associated with ferrets.

Overseas, removal of scent glands is undertaken, however this is unnecessary if desexing is carried out.

Ferrets make fun, easy to handle pets and can provide a lot of entertainment for the family.

COMMUNITY EVENT: Simone Nolan (Wangaratta Art Gallery director), Anita Laurence, Natalie Pizzini and Emma Jones at the recently opened Wangaratta exhibition showcasing past winners of the King Valley Art Show.

“The foresight, commitment to community and hard work shown by the initial committee has built such strong foundations and structures for these events that they have not only withstood the test of time, but flourished,” she said.

“Now, as I walk around my house and look at each piece, I feel they have found the right home – each has its own story.

“They make our home and I love it when I have visitors comment on our eclectic art collection.

“The show illustrates the importance that vision, passion, volunteerism, hard work, culture and a few crazy ideas have on fostering community, bettering our region and driving prosperity for all of those around us.”

Emma Jones is a recent addition to the committee, but she has been involved with the show since first entering artworks in 2008, and has also contributed her graphic design skills to the event.

She said she saw the show as a

truly community venture, with much sponsorship given to artists by local businesses and residents.

“It has a rare balance of being inclusive as well as prestigious,” she said.

Emma said she continued to be inspired and energised by the people who get involved with the show.

She believes the show has made a big impact on the wider arts scene.

“Having the capacity for 450 works, the awards we offer and the number of visitors we attract makes for a true celebration of the local arts scene,” she said.

“This year, we’ve developed a map of 12 local art galleries and shows, to encourage gallery hopping, and we have a community grants program dedicated to enriching arts and culture for the King Valley.”

The King Valley Art Show will be held from June 9-12 at King River Brewing, opening to the public from 10am until 5pm from Saturday until Monday with entry $3 for adults and more information is available at www. kingvalleyartshow.com.au.

LOOKS NICE: The Ovens River at Myrtleford last week looked fantastic, but was fishing very slow. I believe when you are taking landscape photos instead of fish photos it is a good sign that the fishing is quiet.

Reddies on the bite at Lake Buffalo AROUND Wangaratta the Murray cod fishing has really slowed down now, almost to a standstill.

Brett Corker and I cast lures for hours on the weekend and never had a touch.

Most of the people that I have spoken to have told me very similar stories from the Ovens and King rivers in recent weeks.

I know that you can still catch Murray cod around Wangaratta at this time of year, but you are going to need to be patient.

On the flip-side Lake Mulwala has been fishing really well.

My dad and his brother went down there last Friday and landed four Murray cod for the day, with the

largest being 56cms long.

Dad was so relaxed at one stage that as he was trolling along, a fish hit his predator lure and ripped his brand new Wilson live fibre fishing rod out of his hands and into the drink.

He reversed the boat back over the area he had trolled through and thankfully could see the cork butt of his rod about a foot under the water.

When he lifted it out, the tip of the rod was dirty.

The fish had dragged the rod, digging the tip into the mud.

Dad got his rod, reel and lure back, but the fish was never to be seen again.

Lake Buffalo continues to fish really well.

Once again my dad and his brother Gary (what a fishing team) fished up there on Saturday and caught well over 100 redfin, bringing back dozens of decent sized fish.

Uncle Gaz caught his on worms, and dad caught his on yabbies, worms and soft plastics.

They did tell me that they did not see a single fish for the first 1½ hours and had tried many different spots until they eventually found a large school and the fishing went nuts for a couple of hours.

2016 Pinot Grigio Around $19 WHEN we found ourselves in the suburbs of Melbourne on a street lined with Asian restaurants it was hard to decide which doorway to walk through.

While he tends to lean towards Thai, I felt more like Japanese, but then it made sense to choose a cuisine which was the hardest to find close to home.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for that reason Taiwanese and Malaysian made the shortlist and within moments we were seated in a street food bar, laminated menus in hand with a tissue box providing the serviettes.

So glad to have brought the Rutherglen Estates Pinot Grigio, the easy drinking Italian style proving to be a refreshing and fruity accompaniment to Lobak and Hainanese chicken.

The lightly golden coloured wine is crystal clear with the aroma of pear and florals like honeysuckle.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON It has a soft and relaxed mouthfeel with flavours of pear and stone fruit, capped off by a pleasant mineral quality and a dry, citrus finish.

It was made by Marc Scalzo and his team from fruit gown in Rutherglen during a warmer than average season.

The wine is great with food all round and proved a great match for the richness and spice of the pork rolls, while also pairing well with the tender, silkiness of the poached chicken meat.

15 men had been sent overseas to study manufacture and assembly techniques of electric typewriters at an IBM plant in Ontario, Canada, and a temporary assembly line had been established at the Wangaratta Woollen Mills to get production under way.

The first shipment of 200 typewriters left for Sydney late in June.

IT wasn’t too long ago that the words ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’ were used to insult someone, usually male, who was interested in computers, maths or science.

If you were a nerd or a geek, you were a social pariah, relegated to a small group of like-minded friends who played Dungeons and Dragons or Quake over a LAN at lunchtime.

You were very unlikely to be one of the ‘popular’ kids.

But this didn’t particularly bother us ‘nerds’ and ‘geeks’.

We developed a very keen sense of ironic, and self-deprecating humour that makes for a great thick skin.

We also knew who we were, we knew what we liked, we made friends that would last a lifetime, and perhaps most importantly - we knew which way the wind was blowing.

Queue the internet, the smartphone, the tablet and social media.

Queue Lord of the Rings and the Marvel and DC cinematic universe.

Queue the Xbox, Playstation and Steam.

Suddenly all the niche things we ‘nerds’ and ‘geeks’ have always adored - and been stigmatised for - are very popular and worth billions upon billions of dollars to the entertainment industry.

Even more importantly, computers and computer science now run our entire lives.

I, for one, am glad to see this

AND THE GENDER PAY GAP THE GREAT DIVIDE: Globally, women account for 52 per cent of non-tech jobs, but only 20 per cent of tech jobs (Source: Linkedin). change taking place.

But there has also been a casualty in this rapid societal shift.

Women.

It’s no secret that a significant factor in the gender pay gap is the severe lack of women employed in some of the the fastest growing and most well paid fields - science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

For while the technology and science industries grow at an exponential rate, social perspectives and stigmas are a slower moving beast.

To this day, I still receive the odd derisive comment about being a nerd.

And, despite this being an unpopular point that I’ll risk being

lambasted for, most of those derisive comments come from women around my own age.

It’s an anecdotal point, but I do believe those individuals are doing themselves a disservice by perpetuating the stigma in their own minds.

Thanks to initiatives by our schools and educations facilities, young people, particularly young women, are hopefully less likely (though it still happens) to be discouraged by their peers and society at large to pursue careers in STEM fields, but for women aged 25-30 or above, the damage is already done.

Currently, only 16 per cent of Australians employed in STEM fields are women.

That figure is roughly the same for many western countries.

Yet more and more industries are requiring (at the very least) ancillary employees who have IT qualifications or backgrounds and I’m not talking about a ‘basic understanding of Microsoft Word or Excel’ as the old job descriptions put it.

This puts our female work colleagues at a severe disadvantage, as there are simply more men who are more qualified to fill these upcoming positions.

So, how do you solve a problem like Maria?

The initiatives our primary and secondary schools have undertaken should, given enough time, go a long way to resolving the issues

women are facing when it comes to STEM fields, which is great news for millennials.

Not only will more women be qualified in STEM fields, but the stigma surrounding women in STEM will die a very deserving death.

For those women already in the workforce, the road will be tougher, but it’s not insurmountable.

An understanding of coding will be one of the greatest boons to your career in the future.
