HELPING local youth express themselves and tell their stories helps drive teacher and writer Brendan Hogan. As a child, he could often be found putting together his own “books”, some of which he has kept to this day. “Even then, I wanted to be a writer and an illustrator when I grew up,” Mr Hogan said. “I came to theatre and writing through teaching children. “As a teacher I would (and still do) write short films and plays with my class.” Mr Hogan said that in recent years, he became involved with Yackandandah Theatre Company and some of their productions, as well as teaching drama outside of school. “The kids became eager to perform a play of their own – so I wrote Scaredy-Cat for them,” he said. “The play was such a success we took a gamble and took the show the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2015. “Fast-forward 18 months and I am still teaching drama and have since written two more plays for children and am busy working away on my fourth and fifth, hopefully, edging closer to finally earning a commission and having my work performed beyond the North East.” Mr Hogan said he is a firm believer in the power of the arts to help empower and educate children. “I think the arts in particular provide boundless opportunities for children to express themselves. “I’ve always lived in rural and regional communities and most of my childhood was spent playing either football, tennis or cricket – performing arts was never really an option. continued page |
