A DRIVE to preserve the knowledge and wisdom of the older generation, and to help connect generations together, has led to some unforgettable memories for some students and aged care residents in Bright. Led by adolescent health nurse Rosemary Bunge, students from Bright P-12 have been visiting aged care residents at Hawthorn Village, and together they’ve created a soon to be launched coffee table book called Shared Stories. Rosemary said the drive to connect the generations, and create memoirs, was inspired by visits to her own beloved mother in aged care. “While she is extremely well cared for, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of sitting around the aged do, often with little interaction with others for a good part of the day,” she said. “I got to thinking about the waste of so much knowledge and wisdom.” Rosemary developed a pilot project for Bright and Myrtleford P-12 students to regularly visit residents at Hawthorn Village and Myrtleford Lodge respectively. From there, the sharing of life experiences and stories between Hawthorn Village residents and Bright students has led to the compilation of the book. “The rewards are too many to mention, but include community connections, building of self esteem for both the adolescent and the elderly person, career information, the learning of empathy, increased respect both ways, life skills, learning for all, and great community action,” said Rosemary. “As a school nurse it makes me very proud and lifts my spirits every time I make a visit with the students and see the smiles all around and the warmth and empathy shared.” continued page |
