THE pealing of fire engine bells and rattle of collection tins raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal are as much a part of Good Friday in Victoria as fish dinners and time with family. And across North East communities, no matter how small, volunteers are committed to raising money for the appeal so the hospital can continue to help sick children. Appeal Myrtleford area manager, Karen Jones, has been involved for a number of years, as part of her passion for helping children. She has also witnessed the valuable work done by the Royal Children’s Hospital firsthand, with her son Alistair undergoing life changing surgery at the hospital at the age of 11. “They were just amazing,” she said of the hospital and its staff. “It brings home the specialty of care that you can get there.” As a kindergarten teacher, she has also seen a number of her young students benefit from the care provided from the hospital, as well as many young members of the Myrtleford and district community. “They provide groundbreaking, specialised care…they’re a very special breed of people,” she said. Karen is full of praise for the ongoing fundraising efforts of the Myrtleford community, which ranges from the Good Friday fire engine collections to collection tins at local businesses and more. She said outlying communities such as Whorouly and Buffalo River also do their part. “They’re a brilliant team in Myrtleford,” Karen said. “Everyone just pitches in.” continued page |

We also have bulbs, a couple of fruit trees, some have been grafted to grow several different fruit varieties on the one tree What do you enjoy about gardening: I like weeding, just the peace and the satisfaction of it. Favourite plant/spot in your garden: Lilliums are my favourite,
because I like the look of them and I have several different varieties flowering at different times of year. Water saving/ conservation tip: We mulch as much as possible. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: I just weed as I go, and keep it mulched.

ONE stunning plant that brings a tropical feel to the garden is hibiscus. Known for gorgeous, large colourful summer blooms with prominent stamens, a new range has been released which is even more spectacular than the conventional hibiscus. They are hardy shrubs and suitable for both cool and warm climates. The ‘Summerific’ range of hibiscus feature extra-large flowers, up to 20cm in diameter, in striking colour combinations. ‘Berrylicious’ is a deep pink with a darker centre, ‘My Valentine’ is a strong velvety red, ‘Tie Die’ features shades of pink and white with a dark centre and ‘Midnight Marvel’ has deep dark red flowers with purple-bronze foliage. ‘Summerific’ hibiscus are compact plants and grow to a height and spread of around a metre. Unlike their tropical cousins they are deciduous, losing their leaves during autumn. These hibiscus need to be pruned down to almost ground level in winter while dormant to promote new fresh growth in spring. New shoots will appear early spring. Tip prune lightly to encourage thicker growth and more flowers. ‘Summerific’ hibiscus grow in most soils. Ensure the soil is free draining, especially during the winter months.

The crowns may rot if the soil remains waterlogged so add plenty of compost to the soil prior to planting. They grow in full sun to part shade but need protection from strong winds which may damage the stems or flowers. They should be fed early spring with a complete fertiliser as soon as the shoots first appear and then every four weeks during flowering. Remove spent flowers and add some potash to prolong the flowering period. They prefer a slightly moist soil, especially when in flower, so water deeply and regularly. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the root zone, once the stems have developed. Avoid placing the mulch too close to the stems as this may cause rot. ‘Summerific’ hibiscus are also perfect for pots and containers. Use a premium quality potting mix and place pot feet under the pot to improve drainage. Find a place in your garden for these stunning summer beauties. Happy gardening.

Rabbit diets and their teeth HERE is some petcare advice to sink your teeth into! Rabbits make perfect first pets. They are easy to care for and are cute, friendly pocket pets for the younger members of your family. However, there are some things you need to know about this species dietary requirements and teeth, in order to ensure that they remain happy and heathy. Let’s hop to it! Firstly, did you know that a rabbit’s teeth continually grow? This makes what you feed your pet so important, as the teeth need to wear down with diet. The gastrointestinal tract of a rabbit is designed for a high fibre diet, they need to eat at least 70- 80 per cent high fibre in order to prevent gut issues. Contrary to popular belief pellets are not ideal. Options like grass, hay and lucerne straw are good. Some vegetables are also acceptable- bok choy, spinach leaves, celery, brussel sprouts,
lettuce, kale, broccoli and herbs such as parsley, dandelion, coriander, basil, dill and mint. Fruit on the other hand should only be given as a treat, as it can be high in sugar. Looking after your rabbit’s teeth and ensuring that they have a balanced, high fibre diet is a crucial part of their petcare. LOVELY CATCH, AND RELEASE: One of the author’s four Murray cod caught just on the upstream side of Wangaratta last week on a green Wilson Slickback lure.
Murray cod still “on the chew” THE great Murray cod fishing continues around North East Victoria at the moment with reports coming in from a wide range of waterways. I fished upstream of Wangaratta last week where I managed to catch four cod in just a couple of hours walking the banks casting lures. I caught two of my cod on a green Wilson Slickback lure, and two on a Koolabung Codwalker surface lure. I did not measure the fish before I released them, but at a rough guess two were around the 35cm mark and two were around the 45-50cm size range. All were undersize but still lovely fish. Incidentally, I went back out the

next evening with a mate and we didn’t catch a single fish despite being only 100 metres downstream in the same spot with the same lures. That’s fishing! On the weekend there were quite a lot of anglers fishing along the Ovens River as part of an angler creel survey. From the reports I have received there were a lot of Murray cod caught in the lower reaches of the Ovens River downstream of Peechelba, including a few in the 70cm size range.

What caught my attention was the number of yellowbelly that had been caught. The fella I was talking to told me of five yellowbelly in the 50cm size range that he knew of, and there may well have been more. Now there were a few boats on the water, and these guys are very seasoned anglers that know their stuff, but still, the number of Murray cod they caught is testimony to the healthly fish population being sustained in the river, as well as a reminder they’re still “on the chew”. The report I received indicated that most of the boats, each with two anglers, seemed to have caught around nine or ten cod per day.

IN the last few months, some freakish storm cells have caused havoc in parts of the north east, causing flash flooding, wild winds, mud slides and hard-hitting hail. Places like Myrrhee and Moyhu have had their fair share, rain bucketed down like no tomorrow in Carboor and the Ovens Valley also copped a hiding. What’s frightening is how short, sharp and ferocious these growing number of episodes are, damaging homes, flooding businesses and threatening people’s livelihoods in their wake. But what’s wonderful is the resilience of anyone who makes their living off the land, choosing to roll with the punches before standing up to take the next comer on. As we hold our breath and wait to see what’s going to happen next, it’s worth remembering that when the planets do align you end up with a product that makes it all worthwhile.

And so you want to be richer? I CONTINUALLY read of the success or failure of people in their pursuit of being filthy rich. No, I am not saying that we shouldn’t work hard and accumulate wealth, but just how much and for how long do we keep doing it? Most of us are happy that we have sufficient income from various sources, be it a pension, investments or superannuation and that if we wish to do something with some of our savings we can do so and not feel guilty about it. But this is not the case for some, who must watch and accumulate wealth, in many cases until the day they die, without achieving all the things they desired. That is my reason for the following - which were Steve Jobs last words - and I make no apology

Renovation transformation THE home of Wangaratta man Keith Biglin and his family has been totally renovated and transformed in the past few years. The extensive renovations included changes to the floors, walls, ceilings, roof, home heating and cooling, laundry and bathrooms, and the renewal of walls and gardens, and took place over a number of years, from 2009 until the beginning of this year. “When we arrived there was no entertaining space,” Keith said. “We have built two decks and renovated a studio for this purpose. “We have also enjoyed changing the colour scheme from blue, yellow and grey to whites and heritage colours, in keeping with the home’s heritage features.” The best part of the renovation for Keith has been the creation of the studio at the bottom of the garden, which overlooks One Mile Creek and also has tranquil views of gum trees and bird life. Renovations in Victoria six per cent cheaper than national average VICTORIAN homeowners are now paying 5.8 per cent less for their home renovations than the average Australian homeowner. Renovation costs remained steady, with just a 0.63 per cent increase year-on-year, despite national prices rising by 1.48 per cent, a new study reveals. The Renovation Consumer Price Index (RCPI) is a Quarterly report released by ServiceSeeking.com. au analysing 52,000 quotes submitted by tradesman on the website. The latest RCPI compares the cost of renovating in Q2 FY16 versus the prior year. Maintaining its position as the cheapest state to
renovate in Australia, the study shows that Victoria is a huge 10 per cent cheaper compared to Western Australia, and 9.1 per cent more affordable than neighbour state NSW. “We believe that Victorian homeowners are shifting away from renovating their homes to purchase new property” says CEO of ServiceSeeking.com.au Jeremy Levitt. “Lower demand has created great opportunities for homeowners to get cheaper prices for renovation jobs, as tradesman are competing for fewer jobs”. The cost of painting decreased by more than seven per cent, with hourly rates dipping below the
$40 mark ($38.73/hr), a record low not seen in any other state. Other popular renovation services such as plastering, plumbing and electrical work, all remained steady. However, Victoria’s landscaping costs were the highest across the nation at $72.34/hr, having risen 10.26 per cent over the past year. “A shortage of landscapers in Victoria coupled with steady demand has driven prices much higher,” says Levitt. In conjunction with this price escalation, concreters and builders are also charging 9.59 per cent and 7.95 per cent more than this time last year.

Be vigilant for roof damage
MICHAEL Jones, Sydney Architect and Archicentre director says that when homeowners experience major storms and heavy rain, leaky roof problems can lead to dangerous situations where water can penetrate walls, roof linings, and insulation leading to the growth of mould and deterioration of the home. “If water has entered the home it is important to have the roof checked for broken tiles, rusted iron and damaged flashing around chimneys.” “Water damage can be caused by a simple lack of maintenance in clearing out guttering or downpipes which cause the water to back up and enter the home”. “Apart from the appearance of the roof, it is also vital that inside the roof cavity is inspected for structural soundness.” Mr Jones said, ”it was important roof checks were done by professionals with the appropriate knowledge and safety equipment as inspecting roofs which may be damaged is a dangerous situation.” “People who put off having leaks
fixed before renovation could be putting themselves and their families at risk, especially if the water was likely to enter the electrical system or appliances”. ROOF CHECK LIST * Check guttering and downpipes are clear of fallen leaves, sticks and other debris. * If there have been storms or high winds look for broken or cracked roof tiles, loose ridge and valley tiles allowing bird and possum entry as well as water leaks. * Check that corrugated iron sheets are in good condition and well attached. * Ensure valley and eaves guttering are free from holes and rust. Even small holes can create large leaks often making extensive replacement necessary. * Make sure flues and chimneys are structurally safe and the flashings around them are secure against water penetration. * Check inside the roof space for water stains or pinholes of light indicating holes in the roof or flashings.

Rutherglen’s Ultimate Wine and Food Festival
Rutherglen celebrates food and wine HOT on the heels of a vintage described by Rutherglen Wine and Tourism executive officer Natalie Ajay as “really, really fantastic”, this year’s Tastes of Rutherglen is set to make a splash. The event is being held on March 12-13 at 18 participating wineries across Rutherglen and district, and Ms Ajay said that this year, there is plenty to celebrate. She said that reports flowing in from local wineries of this year’s vintage have noted that the flavours, colours, and quality of the wine being produced has been “spectacular”. “This year is just going to be brilliant,” she said. Ms Ajay added that this year’s Tastes of Rutherglen is set to be the most family friendly event yet, with a range of activities especially for families and children scheduled across the participating wineries. She said the events program had many different highlights, including polo at All Saints Estate and the “Movable Feast” at Rutherglen Estates. “You can totally immerse yourself in what Rutherglen’s all about,” she said. “Set over two fantastic days in March, Tastes of Rutherglen is the ultimate food and wine weekend as leading regional chefs and local winemakers partner in a superb progressive lunch in North East Victoria. “Festivalgoers can indulge in matched food and wine combinations at each of the 18 participating Rutherglen wineries, where a signature dish by a regional chef or producer is perfectly matched to the best wines of Rutherglen. “Tastes of Rutherglen provides the opportunity to enjoy the vibe at some of Australia’s most renowned family owned wineries while relaxing and sampling the flavoursome local food and wines. “Gourmands can simply indulge in fabulous dishes matched to sublime wines, or try something more interactive at one of the many wine-focused activities.” Festival entry is just $20 - which provides a festival wristband and tasting glass. Meal+Wine tickets are available at $20 each (festivalgoers may purchase as many as they like).
INDULGE: Michael and Belinda Chambers from Lake Moodemere Estate with Jean-Francois Rupp, of Rutherglen Wine and Tourism, are looking forward to welcoming visitors from far and wide for Tastes of Rutherglen. Transport is easy over the two days thanks to the TAC Winery Shuttle Bus which circles between all 18 wineries, and festival goers can hop on and off as they like ($27 per day, bookings online). Shuttle riders can also take advantage of the free wine check-in service.
There is also a regional shuttle option with pick-up and drop-off also available in Wahgunyah, Corowa, Albury, Wodonga, Howlong, Mulwala, Bundalong, Chiltern, Wangaratta and Yarrawonga ($37 per day, bookings online). A Designated Driver Reward Campaign, also sponsored by TAC, operates all weekend with information available at participating wineries or online.

THERE will be plenty for visitors to enjoy at Rutherglen Estates during the Tastes of Rutherglen celebration on March 12-13. The winery will play host to a range of interesting activities, including a wine and chocolate matching masterclass with winemaker Marc Scalzo, a hawker style market in the courtyard featuring a diverse range of products for sale, and the winery’s “Memorable Moving Feast”. Stroll the courtyard and shop the market stalls, vendors include Renaissance Chocolates, Andrew Cope Pottery, Little Jay Designs jewellery and Magical Spark candles. You can build your own authentic Asian food experience during the weekend, featuring Ayam Goreng (Indonesian fried chicken), Nasi Goreng, Sate and Murtabak (pancakes). The wine match will be the Rutherglen Estates 2015 Arneis, a wine with fresh acidity, generous fruit weight on the midpalate, and a delicate lingering aftertaste. At the masterclass, join Renaissance Chocolates and Rutherglen Estates for an hour of fun and facts which will include four different chocolate and wine pairings. “We will explore just what makes these matches work, and find out what makes a
good quality wine or chocolate just taste better,” Mr Scalzo said. The event will take place in the Tuileries function room and bookings are essential (cost is $20 per person). The feast will see diners enjoy canapes and a first course at a secluded vineyard location at Rutherglen Estates, before making their way to Tuileries to enjoy their main meal and dessert. The event takes place from 6.30pm on Saturday, March 12. Places are limited, please call (02) 60327999 to book. While at Rutherglen Estates, you can sample some new releases, including the 2014 Shelley’s Block and 2014 Estate Durif. Shelley’s Block is a fresh, crisp blend of Rhone white varieties, with Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier in the blend, adding extra structure and complexity to the wine. The 2014 Estate Durif, meanwhile, has an incredible depth of colour and flavour, with intense varietal berry and stewed cherry notes, mixed fruit spice, licorice, chocolate and cedar from elegant oak enhancement.
