IN the modern world, it can be all too easy to lose sight of the everyday pleasures of enjoying healthy, locally produced food.

This is where the region’s farmers’ markets come in.

Run by locals with a fervent interest in food and community, they help the region’s producers sell directly to the consumer.

Those accredited with the Victorian Farmers’ Market Association – which include the markets in Wangaratta, Myrtleford and Wodonga Junction – provide producers with benchmark standards and product knowledge, as well as preventing on-sellers.

Mary Daly is one of the passionate locals behind the Wangaratta Farmers’ Market, which is held in Apex Park and celebrates its third birthday this weekend, and whose stalls contain a range of items, including lamb, beef, trout, seasonal fruits and vegetables, nuts, honey and more, as well as a range of value-added products.

“You’re making that connection with the person that grows your food,” Mary said, recalling how the market began with eight producers and now boasts anywhere up to 40 stall holders, depending on the season.

“We wanted our community to get back in touch with the people who grow their food and to give them the ability to ask the farmer about their food and practices.

New approach for truck drivers to claim their meal expenses THE ATO has announced it has reinstated the meal-by-meal approach for truck drivers who claim travel expenses for meals, after consulting closely with industry.

The meal amounts have been published in a revised Taxation Determination and provide separate amounts for each meal.

The reasonable amounts are $24.25 for breakfast, $27.65 for lunch and $47.70 for dinner.

The amount for each meal is separate and can’t be combined into a single daily amount or moved from one meal to another.

The ATO has been working with trucking industry representatives for several months, and have provided guidance materials on record-keeping for drivers.

The ATO will continue consultation on an agreed approach for 2018/19 and future years with a view to establishing a daily rate to further simplify record-keeping requirements for drivers.

The ATO reconfirmed they want all taxpayers to claim every-

thing they’re entitled to; no more and no less.

It’s important to note the ATO does not limit the amount a taxpayer can claim when travelling away from home overnight for work.

Drivers do not have to keep receipts for every meal if their claim is no more than the reasonable amounts that the Commissioner publishes each year.

Drivers can only claim for amounts actually spent and not just the Commissioner’s reasonable amount.

Should drivers be asked to explain their claims, records such as bank statements for purchases can be relied on to show how much was spent.

The ATO will also ensure that any truck driver who has been using, or wishes to continue using the published previous daily amount of $55.30, could continue to do so and would not be disadvantaged.

Spring flowering dogwoods THE Cornus species are an elegant group of ornamental trees featuring colour throughout the year; from the stunning spring blooms of pink, white and cream, lush green foliage that turns dark red or orange in autumn and textured grey trunks which develop rich shades of red during the winter months.

Cornus, often referred to as Dogwood, is a native of North America and Mexico with over 65 species.

Dogwood is a very hard and strong wood, which was used to make narrow items, like wooden dags or daggers, arrows and skewers.

The wood was also used in making weaving shuttles and golf club heads.

The common name is derived from the Latin term, “Dagwood” which later changed to Dogwood.

The botanical name Cornus is Latin for horn.

Dogwoods bloom in spring with their showy, colourful bracts covering the entire tree.

The true flowers are small and insignificant, with the colour coming from the four large, petal like bracts which surround the flower.

They are fairly hardy but flower best with cold winters and hot summers, making them ideal for the alpine towns of the north east.

Dogwoods can tolerate full sun, but prefer receiving dappled shade during the day.

But too much shade reduces flowering.

They need a very well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter.

Most species are deciduous but evergreen varieties are also available, although the flowers are not as showy.

Some to try include: Cornus florida ‘Rubra’ - “Pink Dogwood” is one of the most spectacular spring flowering, deciduous, small trees growing to 5m. The entire plant is covered with bracts that open dark pink, before fading to light pink.

Cornus kousa “Japanese Dogwood” is a large deciduous shrub, producing masses of creamy-white flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by strawberrylike fruit in autumn. It grows to 5m.

Cornus capitate “Evergreen Dogwood” is an evergreen variety. It is an attractive, round topped tree growing to 6m with yellow cream flowers in late spring and large strawberry-like fruit in autumn.

Dogwoods make excellent feature trees or planted as part of a garden border.

Elbow dysplasia in dog breeds THE elbow is a complicated joint with 3 different bones (radius, ulna, humerus) interacting to form a hinge type articulation.

The proper function of the elbow is reliant on all three of these bones aligning correctly with each other to create a smooth motion as the joint moves.

Unfortunately in some growing animals, an incongruity can develop between the bones for several different reasons.

This leads to a step being formed in the joint between the radius and ulna that irritates the cartilage of the humerus and leads to pain and lameness in the puppy.

Lameness associated with elbow dysplasia usually presents at around six months of age and can often be subtle or appear to affect one leg one day and the other leg another.

This is because often both elbows are involved.

It tends to occur in larger breed dogs, especially labradors

with Tim Craig BVSc, Veterinarian and golden retrievers.

The incongruity can be mild to severe and accordingly the level of pain and limping can vary.

Left alone, it leads to premature arthritic changes in the joint and lifelong stiffness, pain and limping associated with the elbows.

Diagnosis is based on the breed, age and presentation of the dog.

It can then be aided by X-rays or advanced MRI/CT scans.

Treatment is aimed at removing damaged cartilage from the joint and correcting the uneven length of the radius and ulna by a careful cut to the ulna if required.

If you have a young larger breed dog that is limping in early life it is essential that you have your pet checked, as a wait and see approach can lead to irreparable damage to the joints as they grow.

Mary said she has “a passion for growing, sourcing, cooking, educating and consuming food cultivated within my family and driven by the enormous and varied produce our region can grow,” and she is also involved in the Community Food For All network.

She praised the work of the market’s organising committee and volunteer base, and said the event has become a community hub.

Mary said people are more interested in knowing where there food comes from, and how it’s grown, as well as becoming more committed to sustainability by purchasing local produce and reducing food waste.

“One of the really important issues we face in our society and our community is food access, food waste and food education,” she said.

“A lot of food waste is around not just excess availability but the current demands for ‘Perfect’ looking food.

“We are working towards addressing these issues every month with food demonstrations, cooking in the market, how to use your left-overs and how that crooked carrot cooks up and tastes just like a carrot should.”

Franca Norris has been with the Myrtleford Farmers’ Market since its beginning and has a deep interest in all aspects of farming, farmers, and their social connections with those buying their product.

The Myrtleford market sees products sold from across the Ovens Valley, including fruits, cheeses, meats, nuts, seeds, freshwater fish, eggs, wines, and much more.

Franca said markets such as these are vital to smaller producers and communities.

“Small communities really depend on local dollars to be put back into circulation to keep the next generation moving forward with work and opportunities,” she said.

“Farmers markets are important for the farmer to reveal the rewards of their hard work to the community, and an opportunity for the community to appreciate and support that local business.”

Boyd Collins, from the Beechworth Farmers’ Market, said the town’s mar-

ket has been going several years and regularly sees hundreds of people through the gates, and stallholders who come from as far afield as Dookie, Moyhu and Whitfield to sell meat, vegetables, fruit and more.

“We’ve got a nice little atmosphere here,” he said, adding that for small producers, it’s a “stepping stone” to get into the market.

Beechworth Farmers Market is on the first Saturday of the month, while Wangaratta Farmers Market is held on the second Saturday of the month, Myrtleford Farmers Market is on the fourth Saturday of each month, and the Wodonga Junction Farmers Market is held on the first and third Saturday of the month.

Stream fishing still good to go

DOES anybody else feel as though the weather has been unseasonably cool?

This cooler than normal weather is helping to ensure the trout ďŹ shing remains fantastic in the region’s creeks and rivers for longer than it does most years.

The small streams are still ďŹ shing exceptionally well‌..for now anyway.

This is the time of year when the

warms up though.

In many of these small streams, a few reluctant ďŹ sh will stay in the lower reaches and ‘sit out’, coming out to feed when conditions are OK, such as after a decent storm and fresh ush of water.

During these times these reluctant trout will have little competition for food and may experience great growth rates.

I have said it 100 times‌ fewer trout can often mean bigger trout.

So things are about to change, but for now all is great.

Make the most of it.

I have been cleaning up with the small Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in black and gold colour in the smaller streams recently.

I have also been catching a few on rooster tail bladed spinners.

water in the small streams starts to warm up.

When that happens the trout usually either disappear or lay low in the bottoms of the deep shaded holes.

Where possible, once the water starts to warm up, a lot of trout will shoot straight upstream in search of cooler water.

During winter when they have ďŹ nished spawning they will often disperse right back down again providing streams that ďŹ sh well in spring, and poor in summer.

For now, enjoy the fantastic small stream trout ďŹ shing while it lasts because as soon as this cool weather breaks we will not know what hit us and the stream ďŹ shing will change.

And they said you’d never make it Channel Chat SHOW: Rosehaven CHANNEL: ABC TIME: Wednesday, 9.05pm with SHANE DOUTHIE ABC’s quirky comedy set in Tasmania, Rosehaven, was arguably Australian television’s greatest Cinderella story of 2017.

It was the network’s top-rating comedy series, which is quite an achievement up against forces like Utopia and The EX-PM, and even caught the eye of network executives in America and will now be screened on SundanceTv in the US and Canada.

For its unassuming creators and stars Luke McGregor (Daniel) and Celia Pacquola (Emma) it must be a dream come true but

MORE PLEASE: The adventures of Tasmania’s own odd couple Daniel and Emma have returned in the second series of Rosehaven on the ABC. the challenge will be to keep the novelty of the plot interesting and amusing for a second series.

Episode two saw Daniel and Emma confront bullying head-on, both at work through a husband seeking a very short term rental (one night) while his wife “cooled down” after

an argument, and then by a 12 year old supermarket “Nazi” who decides to ban the pair from the store.

Considering that was the only outlet in town to buy food and toilet rolls the ‘couple’ was in a real dilemma.

While the story ran at the same leisurely pace synonymous that’s with the show, with plenty of smile moments but very few laugh out loud lines, I found myself thinking maybe the series had reached its used-by date already.

That was until the final few minutes when all the separate plotlines came together beautifully and hilariously reinforcing that this creative duo has plenty of quality episodes left in them.

This show has its own pace and style making it truly unique (peculiar might be a better word) but compared to pumped out trash like Man With A Plan (Matt La Blanc) and Kevin Can Wait (Kevin James), Rosehaven’s heart and substance puts it in a different league.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: The Letdown (Wednesday, 9.35pm, ABC): A darkly comic look at the challenges of not being a perfect parent which ranges from amusing to making the viewer feel very uncomfortable.

The Ex-PM (Thursday, 8.30pm, ABC): Shaun Micaleff has returned as former Prime Minister Andrew Dugdale who is back on the campaign trail, this time in a rural seat.

Hard Quiz (Wednesday, 8pm, ABC): Still not only the best quiz show on television but the funniest live show on air.

Sam Miranda 2017 Pinot Grigio DURING another whirlwind lunch with the girls I felt sorry for the waiter trying vainly to get our attention.

It’s hard for anyone to get a word in for the first half hour because of the babble as we try to summarise what’s happened over months in the first few minutes, let along someone on the sidelines desperate to take an order.

I feel like it would be easier if he wore a bright yellow shirt and carried a whistle, then perhaps he could threaten to give us a red card and send us out if we don’t shut up and start paying attention.

So when I get the nod to order I’m happy to do my duty, requesting a mix of dishes I know everyone will enjoy.

Pinot Grigio is a great choice for lunch and this time it’s from Sam Miranda of the King Valley.

It’s well chilled and has a super pale colour with only the barest tinge of green.

The nose is quite floral and spring like, with a hint of lemon sherbet.

It’s clean, crisp and crunchy with a little nashi and citrus which lasts after the dry, mineral finish.

I’m glad when some fried calamari and crispy whitebait arrive at the table, accompanied by rich, garlic-tinged aioli, which are good foils for this crisp white.

Just wish the others would stop yacking long enough to try it too.

A STUDY of over 1200 people conducted by the Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council (GLNC) has shown that fewer Australians are limiting grain foods, and legume consumption is on the rise.

Eating 2-3 serves of whole grains daily reduces the risk of developing our nation’s leading cause of death - cardiovascular disease, as well as type 2 diabetes and certain cancers by 20-30 percent, and legumes offer significant health benefits too.

Aussies can take action to improve their health simply by adding half a cup of legumes or an extra serve of whole grains to their day – subbing half the mince in a bolognaise with red lentils or adding a handful of oats to a smoothie are both great ways to up your intake.

Cover the pan and cook on a medium high heat until they are soft enough to easily purée (about 40 minutes).

Skim occasionally.

Purée the beans and garlic, either by hand or in a food processor, according to your preferred texture.

Stir in the olive oil, spices and lemon juice.

The consistency can be adjusted: for a thinner soup, mix in more hot water; for a thicker dip, boil the beans with less water.

Serve the bessara hot, drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with cumin and paprika.

Tip: If you can’t get hold of dried faba beans, you can substitute them for the same quantity of cannellini or butter beans.

Social science, postmodernism and identity politics “I IDENTIFY as…”

These three words - accompanied by a slew of nouns and labels describing sexual preference, race, ethnicity and ability - are becoming an increasingly popular way of introducing one’s self.

Gone, it seems, are the days where people simply and definitively ‘are’ something or someone.

Strong declarative statements such as ‘I am a guy’ are being replaced by the far more qualifier-laden ‘I identify as a heterosexual, cis-gendered, polyethnic, able-bodied, male with a cultural Jewish heritage’.

Putting aside the notion that if you use 20 or more syllables to describe your basic, mundane characteristics, you’re probably a pretty dull and uninteresting person, the comparatively weak phrase ‘I identify as…’ speaks to the crux of an issue that faces our population

today, particularly our youth.

That is to say, many people seem to be struggling with a crisis of identity.

According to the Australian Sex Survey, conducted in 2016 by the Queensland University of Technology, there are at least 33 terms for ‘gender’ that Australians now use.

These include terms such as ‘gender-fluid’, ‘non-binary’ and ‘poly-gender’.

And along with these terms come a host of ‘preferred pronouns’ - words to address those who don’t conform to the traditional gender classifications of male and female.

Examples of these are ‘ze’ ‘xyr’ or ‘xemself’.

Alongside these new gender and sexual orientation terms, there is a renewed and determined focus on identifying oneself under cultural and ethnic lines as well.

You might be a ‘woman of colour’ or a ‘differently-abled white person’.

Taken in and of itself, this celebration of diversity could well be a tremendous thing.

Each of us possess different experiences and influences, and recognising those differences should build a stronger, more resilient, and more cohesive society, in theory.

So why are our places of learning, and our public spheres in general, now awash with ‘trigger warnings’ and ‘safe spaces’?

Why are younger generations becoming so fragile that the mere utterance of a dissenting point of view causes them to retreat to said ‘safe spaces’ in a state of perpetual infantilization?

In some cases, even the slightest, arbitrary, perceived transgression against an individual is labelled a ‘microaggression’ and is responded

to with punitive legal measures, the loss of employment for the accused perpetrator, or even vigilante violence.

We are quickly becoming a society that is constantly walking on eggshells around each other, fearing we may accidentally say or do something that someone will perceive as offensive.

Professor of Psychology, and culture critic Dr. Jordan Peterson believes this disconcerting shift in attitudes is significantly underpinned by post-modernist ideologies which have been fostered in many universities, and are now the driving force behind these ‘politically correct’ societal changes.

At it’s core, the philosophy of postmodernism rejects the notion of objective reality and empiricism, believing that ‘truths’ are a social construct.

Politically speaking, postmodernism gives rise to collectivism - sub-

groups of a population drawn along the lines of social or class identity.

Alongside this is the narrative of the oppressed/oppressor dichotomy, wherein one social group or class is perpetually oppressed by another, irrespective of individual circumstance.

Thus, in a society in which ‘truth’ is entirely arbitrary, subject to the whims of each individual’s lived experience, and in which you are lumped into either the category of ‘privileged oppressor’ or ‘perennially oppressed’, it seems small wonder that people are suffering an identity crisis as neither category is particularly appealing.

My advice, for what it’s worth, to those who have bought into such a self-defeating mindset is to stop obsessing over ‘what’ you are, and start focussing on ‘who’ you are.

In other words, take up a hobby, for goodness sake.

VIBRANT CULTURE: The Beechworth Celtic Festival attracts large crowds to the region every year.

Festival jam packed with Celtic fun THE time honoured traditions of Celtic culture will be on show in Beechworth during the upcoming annual Celtic Festival.

This year, the festival is being held on November 10-11 and in a new touch the majority of events are being held at Beechworth’s historic Old Gaol, which, after having been purchased by a group of locals, has now become a unique community precinct.

A dedicated group of volunteers from

the local community have been working hard to put together this year’s festival.

This year’s event will also feature the majesty of a full 90 minute tattoo, for which the festival enlisted the assistance of current president of Pipe Bands Australia, Chris Earl.

Held in the tradition of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the event will be presented in the exercise yard of the Old Beechworth Gaol and will celebrate “the legends, traditions and the heroes of

the North East”, according to organising committee member Trish Forrest.

The intense drama of Barry Versus Kelly, a musical drama by Felix Meagher (with additional music by Lou Hesterman and Cyril Moran), will also be performed.

It tells the story about the trial and execution of Ned Kelly in 1880, focusing on the confrontation between Ned and the Judge, Sir Redmond Barry.

Other highlights of the festival will include the Gala Celtic Dinner being

held at The Old Priory on Friday night, November 10; the VSU Highland Dancing competigion, the Rotary Market in Queen Victoria Park, including some pipe bands playing ‘on the Rock’; the large range of musical performances from folk bands and pipe bands; and more.

Musical and marching spectacular MYTHS, legends and heroes of the north-east will be celebrated when 200 performers take to the old Beechworth Gaol exercise yard for the town’s first-ever Celtic festival tattoo.

The 90-minute musical and marching spectacular on Saturday, November 11 will stir memories of the past and honour men and women from the area who served in World War One – this year being the 99th anniversary of Armistice being signed.

And modern heroes from local Country Fire Authority brigades will be part of the tattoo action as they compete for the Golden Boot in a series of races.

Another anniversary – the hanging of Ned Kelly on 11 November 1880 - will be recalled with a segment from the musical play Kelly Versus Barry.

Tattoo producer Chris Earl believes the sight and sound of the opening massed pipes and drums will create a special atmosphere in the old gaol as performers bring a touch of the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo to the festival.

“Among the six pipe bands on parade will be Scots School Albury, fresh from starring in all 25 performances of this year’s Edinburgh Tattoo,” he said,

“I am pleased to have a tattoo cast featuring so many local performers – pipe and brass bands, highland and Irish dancers – who are accomplished and entertaining.”

Chris produced the 150th Maryborough Highland Gathering Tattoo in 2011 and is event director for the Scots Day Out celebrations in Bendigo each March.

He has developed or appeared in numerous tattoos and major events over the past 30 years and is the president of Pipe Bands Australia while also being senior drum major for pipe bands in Victoria.

“It’s a unique performance space that brings some challenges but the flexibility of our tattoo format and co-operation of the cast guarantees the crowd a special journey of music and pageantry through the history of the region,” Chris said.

“We’ve blended the pipes, the brass, folk groups, firies and dancers into a 90+ minute spectacular to celebrate the 23rd Celtic festival.

“The cast is excited and we are all keen to share that excitement with a wonderful crowd.”

The tattoo will be held on Saturday, November 11 at Beechworth Gaol between 7-8.30pm.

Festival has good mix of performers

THE Beechworth Celtic Festival has long been associated with diverse and memorable live music performances, and this year will be no exception.

Among the range of acts performing are Bhantre, Claymore, Saoirse, and more.

Beechworth resident Rebecca Humphries, who plays fiddle, is among the performers that make up the group Bhantre, and she has memories of the Beechworth Celtic Festival at its beginning.

“I remember being part of the first Celtic festival 23 years ago, in a band called Shortcut to Mushrooms,” she said, noting that fellow group member Sue Foley was playing in another band then.

“Bhantre have been playing together for 21 years.

“Our first appearance as Bhantre at the festival would have been around 1998, and I don’t think we have missed too many in that time.”

The group recently added a fourth member Wendy Rowlands, who plays accordion, and Rebecca has returned to playing with the group after taking a break from performing when she moved back to Beechworth with her family in 2009.

“Recently I have started doing a few

“I love that there is so much history in Beechworth and this lends to the Celtic festival so well,” she said.

“Beechworth is a lovely town and performing at so many festivals over the years means it has a special place in our hearts.

“This year will be exciting as it is the first festival to be run at the Old Gaol.

“Now I live here, I love that the festival comes to me!”

With three albums under their belts, festival audiences can expect a mix of traditional tunes, ballads and original songs from Bhantre, and Rebecca said she relishes playing Celtic music.

Dancing is family fun

THE atmosphere, athleticism and grace of the various Celtic dancing disciplines have entranced countless people over the years, and the Beechworth Celtic Festival continues to showcase the art form this year.

Trish Forrest, who has been involved

with the Balmoral Highland Dancing society for over 20 years, as well as being on the Celtic Festival committee, said the art form has helped her build many lifelong friendships and has given her many opportunities during the years.

She said highland dancing promotes

fitness, agility, respect for tradition and discipline, as well as being a great family activity and having many other benefits.

This year the Victorian Scottish Union Highland Dancing Competition will be held within the walls of the Old Beechworth Gaol.

Hosting this competition at the Beechworth Celtic Festival for the 17th year in a row, the Balmoral Highland Dancing Society Inc are once again delighted to be one of their busiest weekends of the year.

The competition will welcome highland dancers from all over Victoria, who will compete for a number of championships sponsored by Beechworth businesses and families.

The program will have a mix of Highland and Irish dancing, and there will also be some sword dancing.

Presentation of the prestigious Balmoral Award and coveted Mikal Stanimirovitch Memorial Trophy will take place during the day.

Bill Schrank, well known and respected VSU Highland Dancing Judge will travel from Melbourne to adjudicate.

The competition area will be set up in the Gaol’s vegetable garden area and dancers will begin competing in the 38 event program at 10.30am.

There will be a short lunch break during the day and those present will be observing one minutes’ silence at 11am.

Head to Pizzini to relax and unwind

PACK your friends and family in the car and join the Pizzini family for their Gnocchi Carnevale celebrations as part of the Wines of the King Valley’s La Dolce Vita Wine and Food Festival.

Enjoy Katrina’s homemade gnocchi and their crisp new release white wines.

Relax in the shade with friends and a Prosecco or Brachetto cocktail, while the kids enjoy the range of activities just for them.

Pizzini have designed a fun weekend for the whole family.

Free children’s activities include face painting, circus workshops and performances by FunFit, an undercover art and craft area plus giant sandpit and games, plus kite making with Kites4Kids at $6 each.

For the adventurous adults, a gnocchi rolling competition and wine spitting challenge are held at 2.30pm and 3pm both days, with wine prizes up for grabs.

The lunch menu includes amazing antipasti to share, Katrina’s gnocchi (made using potatoes grown by Fred on the property) and other Italian inspired dishes, plus delicious desserts, sweet treats, ice creams and espresso coffee.

Gluten free and vegetarian options are available.

Cellar door is open from 10am-5pm and Maurice Milani and roving gypsy jazz band Bric a Brac will entertain from 11am-4pm each day.

There is strictly no BYO alcohol, food or pets.
