EVERY two years, Wangaratta’s rich textile heritage comes to the fore in the form of the Stitched Up Textile Festival. It offers a chance for creatives and makers of all ages and disciplines to demonstrate their love for their chosen textile medium. For Janice Jones, it’s about keeping alive traditional skills, often with contemporary twists. Wangaratta’s connection to textiles and wool was among the reasons she and her husband chose to move to the area about 15 years ago. And the advent of the Stitched Up Textile Festival gripped her imagination and she is currently an active member of the festival committee, as well as being part of the Embroiderers Guild – North East Branch and the Peechelba Machine Embroiderers. Showing off one of her latest pieces, a portrayal of cicadas featuring tiny stitching and wings made from shimmering fabric, she explained that the natural world is one of her biggest sources of inspiration. From Australian native plants and wildlife to the rugged beauty of desert country, the colours, forms, shapes and landscapes stimulate much of her creativity. “I like to try different techniques and I try to think outside the square a little bit,” Janice said. “I like using old techniques in new creative work. “It’s really important to keep the traditional skills going.” She said the Stitched Up Textile Festival was important to not just highlight the skills of local makers, but pay tribute to Wangaratta’s rich wool and textile manufacturing history. continued page |
