A MOTHER’S worry, grief and anger - and the sacrifice of a generation of men fighting for their country and for freedom.

These are some of the things Wangaratta’s Bob Cusack has discovered during years of research into his family history, in particular the fate of Michael McCrickard, his first cousin, twice removed.

Michael enlisted alongside his brother, Robert, in the winter of 1915, but took three years off his age and enlisted under the name Francis McCrickard.

His family received notification that he reported as wounded in 1916, and he in fact died in August 1916, but he was not classified as killed in action until some 19 months later.

Bob has been researching his family history off and on for the past 12 years, and said finding out what some of his relatives had been through in their lives can be a very emotional experience.

“It was really, really sad,” he said of Private McCrickard’s fate, noting how the soldier’s mother, Catherine, spent years frustrated with the defence force for not informing them of her son’s death sooner.

To add to her pain, in the years after the war ended, the family lost much in devastating bushfires, and she also endured the death of her husband.

IF you are looking for some fun activities to keep the kids amused during the school holidays, then get them in the garden.

Not only is it healthy by getting them outside to connect with nature, they can happily get dirty, be creative and benefit from some hands on learning.

Create mini gardens by recycling some old work boots or gumboots and turn them into unique pots.

Poke a hole in the toe of the boot to allow drainage then fill with a good quality potting mix and plant with seeds or seedlings of pretty flowers and herbs.

Place them in groups for added effect.

Make an eggshell garden by saving those empty eggshells and cartons.

These are great to plant succulents in.

Wash the eggshells carefully, (maybe this is a grownups job) and place them in the carton.

This makes them easier to plant up.

Fill the eggshells about three quarters with soil and insert a cutting of a small growing succulent.

These can be cut off existing plants.

Mist lightly occasionally, they don’t need much water.

The eggshell pots can be painted or decorated before planting and look fantastic sitting in individual egg cups or en masse in an egg carton.

Encourage them to help in the garden by giving them a special spot to plant their own seeds or plants (don’t make them pull weeds straight away, it may put them off gardening, but as plants and weeds grow, explain the importance of weeding then).

Take the kids shopping and allow them to choose their own plants to grow.

Try snow peas in the veggie patch, these grow quickly and produce an abundance of sweet healthy snacks the kids can pick and eat straight from the garden.

Seeds take around a week to germinate and the kids can watch them grow each day.

Get their artistic juices flowing by creating some funky plant labels.

Cut some cardboard into shapes of flowers or leaves, glue onto a paddle pop stick, decorate and write on the names of the plants.

Cover with contact or laminate, then place in the garden.

Phimosis NO one enjoys discussing genitalia, however it is very important for your vet to know exactly where a problem is – there is no need for embarrassment, as we deal with these problems regularly.

Sometimes you may notice your dog’s penis extended out from the sheath.

This is quite normal and can happen if they are excited by another dog or excited to see you arrive home.

The penis should return back into the sheath quite quickly - if it is still out half an hour later, the dog needs treatment.

You can try to lubricate the penis and ease the sheath back over it, or

A MOTHER’S GRIEF: Private Michael ‘Francis McCrickard’s mother, Catherine, went years before finding out for certain that her son was killed in action in France.

“A living death, I may call it,” she said of the time spent not knowing of her son’s fate, in a letter written to the defence department in March 1918.

“It is a cruel way to treat a poor mother after giving her good sons to be sacrificed in this horrid war.”

Mr Cusack and wife Georgina have been members of the Wangaratta Family History Society for some years, and are grateful for the help and resources that they have been able to access as part of the group.

The couple have had the opportunity to visit the site of Private McCrickard’s final battle, at Mouquet Farm in France,

as well as visiting the homeland in Ireland of past generations of Bob’s family in County Clare.

He said visiting the battleground, as well as numerous other significant wartime sites in France, brought home to him the sacrifices of generations past.

“It is really sad to think that hundreds of thousands of Australians are buried there,” Bob said.

“It was really emotional for me.

“Just to be there and think that he and many other men are just buried there in the ground is powerful.

“They gave us our freedom by being over there.”

The Cusacks said there is still much evidence in France of the country’s respect for the Australian sacrifice, with streets named for Australian cities in many places.

Georgina, who has also traced much of her British family ancestry and also had several family members fighting during WWI on the Western Front, said seeing war cemeteries like Villers-Bretonneux was a humbling experience.

“All the different ranks are buried alongside each other,” she said.

“They fought together, died together, and they’re buried together.”

If the penis stays out too long the circulation to it becomes damaged and the tissue will start to die.

When this happens the only treatment options are surgery to amputate the penis or euthanasia.

Murray cod respond to cool change IT appears many of those anglers lucky enough to get out over Easter and wet a line caught fish of some description.

Brett Corker landed a magnificent 74cm Murray cod right in the middle of Wangaratta, in the most heavily fished section of the Ovens River.

That says a lot about the impacts of fishing pressure - I wonder how many lures that magnificent cod has passed up in recent years?

Lake Mulwala has been fishing quite consistently over the last few weeks.

I have not heard reports of huge

numbers of Murray cod being caught, but I have had consistent reports of two or three Murray cod getting caught on a regular basis.

I have also seen photos of Murray cod nudging the 100cm size that have been caught in the top end of Lake Mulwala recently.

Most cod have been caught on lures although I had a great report of some cod being caught on baits of worms and cheese in the Bundalong area last week.

This time of the year, when the water starts to cool down, Lake Mulwala usually does become a bit of a stand out cod fishery.

In fact, the entire Murray River tends to fish okay.

In a few weeks time - subject to rainfall - when the irrigation season begins to

wind down and somebody puts the plug in Lake Hume, the Murray River should pick up another couple of notches.

So pretty much as the natural flowing rivers like the Ovens, King and Kiewa rivers start to wind down, the Murray starts to pick up.

Last week I fished a tributary of the King River where I found the trout were quite switched on.

The water has cooled considerably, and the trout have become a lot more active.

Unfortunately the water is very low which will make it hard for the trout to migrate upstream to spawn.

Hopefully some more decent rainfall – to add to the 10 to 15mm which fell early Tuesday this week across the North East - is not too far away.

ALZHEIMER’S Australia is concerned that more than half of the Australian population is inactive, according to a paper released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), which increases their risk of developing dementia.

Alzheimer’s Australia CEO Carol Bennett said: “Research has found that around 13 per cent (or approximately 4 million) of Alzheimer’s disease cases worldwide are attributable to physical inactivity.

“If a quarter of inactive people became more active, this could prevent nearly 1 million cases of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide.”

The paper also suggests that modifiable risk factors such as diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking are also risk factors of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

“A growing body of evidence is finding that there is an association between diabetes, cardiovascular disease, among

many other chronic diseases, as well as cognitive decline,” Ms Bennett said.

“If left unchecked, these chronic diseases can increase a person’s risk of developing dementia.

“Alzheimer’s Australia’s world first dementia risk reduction program, Your Brain Matters, has led the world in educating the Australian public of the modifiable risk factors of dementia, including many of those mentioned in AIHW’s report.

“Strategies suggested in the Your Brain Matters program, such as maximising your brain health and managing your blood sugar, cholesterol levels and blood pressure, have been proven to reduce the risk of developing some of the world’s most devastating chronic diseases, including dementia.

“The report by AIHW gives greater evidence to support ongoing funding of Your Brain Matters program beyond June 2015, when the current funding is set to end.”

French toast THIS is something you can do for breakfast on the school holidays.

French toast is a delicious breakfast recipe for the family.

Sliced bread soaked in an egg mixture and fried, French toast is a great way to get your kids to eat eggs without them knowing.

Method In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla until thoroughly combined.

Add milk and whisk to blend.

Heat one tablespoon butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat, swirling pan, until foaming subsides, about five minutes.

Soak two slices of bread in egg mixture, turning, until saturated.

Add soaked bread to frying pan and cook, swirling occasionally, until browned on bottom side, about three minutes.

Sprinkle top side of bread with sugar, flip, and continue to cook, swirling occasionally, until browned on second side, about three minutes longer.

Near disaster, 1983 A TRAIN of fully laden petrol tankers was derailed approximately 12 kilometres north of Wangaratta, and a major disaster was narrowly averted.

The incident renewed concerns about the danger of highly flammable materials and chemicals being transported through heavily populated areas.

THERE has been a lot of talk lately about celebrities spruiking the nutritional benefits of the Paleo diet, telling us eating like a caveman is going to keep us fit and living longer.

I’ve actually got a soft spot for the concept of eating stuff that is foraged or hunted rather than found in a packet on a supermarket shelf, but like typical extremist eaters, they take it too far.

For instance I’ve never understood what they’ve got against the humble legume and I don’t believe for a moment that such a healthy and delicious podborn product could be toxic.

It’s about that time of year when kidney beans, chick peas and lentils are going to star in just about every soup or stew I whip up.

Money management help for VET students A

pprentices and trainees keen to improve their money management skills now have access to an online training resource developed by the ASIC and launched by the Federal Small Business Minister, the Hon Bruce Billson MP. ASIC’s new Be MoneySmart resource aims to help students in vocational education and training (VET) improve their financial literacy by better understanding personal taxation, superannuation, insurance, debt management and budgeting.

Minister Billson said, “time and time again, I hear of the need from both employers and employees for better financial literacy training.

“I am committed to making sure our country is the very best place to start and grow a business.

“It is vital that enter-

prising Australians who want to be out in the workforce can access the training they need to be their very best.’

ASIC Commissioner Greg Tanzer encouraged trainers and teachers working in TAFE Institutes, registered training organisations, group training organisations and schools to introduce ASIC’s Be MoneySmart into their courses.

“Financial literacy is about empowering individuals so that they can confidently make financial decisions, manage financial risks and participate in our financial system,” said Mr Tanzer.

“Developing good money habits early on will not only help trade students during their training, but throughout their careers.

“Making smart decisions about money is

invaluable for those students who go on to be self-employed or employ others.

“ASIC’s Be MoneySmart is also freely available to anyone offering training in money management skills including workplace training and small businesses,” Mr Tanzer said.

ASIC’s Be MoneySmart resource was developed with assistance from Innovation and Business Skills Australia, the Australian Tax Office, Group Training Australia, Fair Work Building and Construction and Bendigo Kangan Institute.

“ASIC is grateful to the many key stakeholders who provided input and assistance in the development of this new resource,” said Mr Tanzer.

PIMPLES and low self -esteem are most frequently linked to teenagers, but frustratingly more and more women over 30 are still acne prone.

Where your pimples are may point to their cause.

For instance, pimples on the cheeks are often the sign of a food intolerance such as dairy, whereas cyst-like pimples along the jawline are most likely to be hormonally triggered.

Hormonal outbreaks also appear on the chest, back and shoulders. Small pimples, with red surrounds grouped closely together signify a localised infection just under the skin.

AND so the government is all for giving you an opportunity to have your say in shaping a new tax system.

Having printed a copy of the government’s ‘Better Tax’ released last week, the first thing that struck me was how much it cost for me and the thousands of others to print the document which was in full color.

And yes, apart from Denmark, Australia raises almost 60 per cent of its total taxation revenue from income tax.

Personal income tax accounts for about 39 per cent of tax raised and company income tax another 19 per cent.

Of the revenue received by government the only other figure above the 10 per cent mark is GST at 12 per cent.

There has been some talk of a rise in the rate of GST, or an extension to the goods and services subject to GST, such as medical services and fresh food.

I remember being told that GST would eliminate a lot of the present taxes, like sales tax and fuel taxes, but we still have fuel tax contributing around four per cent of government revenue and payroll tax some five per cent.

Since the introduction in 2000 of GST, I have been amazed at the rorting of the system by people who consider they are being hamstrung by the imposition of the GST as Johnny down the road is not registered as he is under the threshold, and therefore can do the job cheaper than I. I would believe that if everyone who needed to be registered for GST did the right thing, then while it may initially be dearer for the end user, an increase in revenue from GST should see income tax rates reduce.

But it would be a very bold government at the moment to contemplate an increase in GST, however, this may be an issue in the future.

Income tax and bracket creep are a constant headache for a government committed to lowering of income tax rates.

Rising incomes often make people stop working hard and more often because they know that after reaching a threshold of $80,000, they will be paying (or more precisely giving the government) an additional 4.5 cents of each dollar they earn.

But should they exceed the $180,000 threshold they will be giving an extra eight cents in the dollar to government revenue (up from 37 cents to 45 cents).

It is interesting to note that over the next decade it is estimated around 800,000 taxpayers will be in the highest marginal tax bracket, while over 2.2 million taxpayers will be in the second highest bracket.

So why the need for tax reform?

Over the next 40 years Australia will change, whether for the better I cannot say, but it is important we make the most of the opportunities presented and one of these will be in reforming the tax system to promote jobs, growth and opportunity.

The rise of the digital economy and globalisation presents significant challenges for the effectiveness of the taxation system.

Multinational corporations operate across many jurisdictions and where they pay their tax can be difficult to determine.

Many of our international competitors are changing their tax systems to make them more competitive, so tax reform may have the potential to lift our gross domestic product more than any other government reforms.

Looking ahead, the numbers of Australians of traditional working age (15 to 64) compared to those of us 65 and over in 1975 was 7.3, but in 2055 this percentage will have dropped to just 2.7, so it is easy to see why we need some tax reform to have enough money to run the country.
