THE addiction began in 1955, when Wangaratta’s Mick Laprino had his first ‘hit’ of Holden. His family bought an FJ Holden three years after emigrating from Italy to Australia in 1952. Mick, aged 19, fell in love with the car’s “strong build”, and “reliability”. More than 60 years later, his unwavering passion for the ‘General’ has seen him win a number of national and state title competitions all over Australia. “I’ve been a Holden man my entire life, and I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Mick professed, gazing adoringly at his milk and coffee coloured car. “I have two early Holden cars today – a 1974 HJ Kingswood and a 1958 FC Ute. “The FC Ute cost me less than 1000 pounds when I bought it in 1958. “I’ve kept it ever since.” Mick confessed there was a time in his life when he strayed from his muchloved car manufacturer. He briefly experimented with a Chrysler Valiant station wagon in the 1970s before reverting back to Holden with a 1974 HJ Kingswood. “That’s the biggest mistake I’ve made, changing from Holden,” he said. “We kept it for 12 months then sold it because it was no good.” Mick will be competing in the FE FC Holden Car Club of Victoria’s seventh state titles in Wangaratta this Sunday. The competition will be held in conjunction with the Early Holden Car Club of Wangaratta’s All GM Day event at Wangaratta’s Apex Park. “If I’m in luck, I’ll win something,” Mick shrugged. continued page |

New governance code keeps superannuation members’ interests first

THE Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) has developed a new governance code to reinforce the importance of member representation on the boards of superannuation funds and aims to keep profit-to-member funds positioned at the leading edge of governance practices. The draft code –which has a proposed start date of July 1, 2017 and has been circulated to AIST’s membership for feedback and consultation –will apply to more than 50 profit-to-member funds with recommendations that exceed existing legal and APRA regulatory requirements on Australian super funds. This will ensure the continued protection of millions of Australians’ retirement savings. The code has been developed separately but in tandem with the Fraser review and follows a commitment made by AIST and Industry Super Australia to the Australian Senate. AIST CEO Tom Garcia says AIST’s code – modelled and built around the ASX Corporate Governance Principles - reflects the importance of safeguarding members’ retirement savings through robust governance practices. “Despite the overwhelming
KEEPING IT SAFE: A new code seeks to safeguard members’ superannuation savings. legal and regulatory requirements that already apply to super funds, AIST believes more can be done to safeguard members’ compulsory retirement savings,” Mr Garcia says. “We are asking our member funds to sign up to a code that recognises the key role that the equal representation system plays in delivering superior results for members.” The code covers a broad range of governance issues, with 22 recommendations including recommendations on member engagement opportunities; equal director voting rights; strong risk culture; board renewal, chair appointment, disclosure, transparency and remuneration. The code requires funds to maintain an equal representation
governance structure (involving both member and employee representation) whilst also allowing the appointment of up to one third independent (nonrepresentative) directors. Mr Garcia says the code recognizes that a host of factors contribute towards best practice governance. “You can’t sound-bite good governance – it doesn’t come down to one factor,” Mr Garcia says. “Good governance is fundamentally about a group of people making good decisions, having the right skills and also having a strong commitment to the members they serve. AIST’s code provides a framework to ensure this continues to be front and centre to profit-to-member superannuation practices.”
THE idea of wicking beds has been around for a long time. They date back to the days of the ancient Egyptians who used clay pots filled with water buried in the ground to water plants. They are basically giant self-watering pots which water plants from below rather than above. Wicking beds are containers with water reservoirs at the base. Moisture is drawn up through the soil via a process called capillary action or wicking. This is similar to how blotting paper or sponges work. Moisture moves through, or in the case of wicking beds, up through the soil to the surface. This allows moisture to be more evenly distributed through the soil, creating better growing conditions for the plants. Because wicking beds are self-watering, they are very water efficient, preventing water loss through evaporation and reducing the need for daily watering. A properly constructed and maintained wicking bed should have moist soil most of the time, with the roots accessing the water as they require it. Wicking beds are easy to construct and maintain. They can be made from recycled materials like wooden

crates or pellets or even old bath tubs. Commercially made kits are also available from hardware or garden stores. Wicking beds do best placed in full sun. To function properly, wicking beds need to have a depth of around 600mm - 300mm for the reservoir/water saturation zone and 300mm for the growing/root zone. It has been proven that water cannot be wicked further than 300mm so these depths are important to follow. The soil used needs to be high in organic matter so add plenty of compost and organic materials. For an easy to maintain and constructed veggie bed that saves water, time and energy try a wicking bed. Are cats just dogs in costume? THE short answer is no. Cats are not dogs with sharp claws or humans on four legs, their lifestyle and requirements differ significantly to ours and sometimes this is hard to see. Have you ever wondered why, when you call them for a pat they just ignore you? This is the reason, so when they do come, enjoy that extra special moment. However they all enjoy having a tray with enough litter that is regularly cleaned. Understanding the language cats speak can be difficult but they will appreciate you trying. “It’s all up to the judges.” Mick explained there are usually four judges at a state title competition: one for mechanics, one for panel beaters, one for upholstery and one for spray paint. “In 2008, I went to my first national event in Mt Gambier, South Australia,” he said. “I received a trophy for best vehicle, best engine, best interior and best exterior.” Last year Mick went to the enormous effort of taking his 1958 FC Ute to Tasmania on the Spirit of Tasmania for a national competition. “I’m 80 years old,” he smiled. “But I never get tired of driving.” Mick is part of the Wangaratta Early Holden Car Club, the Wangaratta Vintage and Veteran Car Club and the FE FC Holden Car Club of Victoria. Ron Briggs, a founding member of
the Wangaratta Early Holden Car Club, shares Mick’s passion for the vintage vehicles. “I’ve always been a Holden fan,” he proclaimed, saying he loved the early Holdens because they made him feel “nostalgic”. “It’s reminiscent of our youth… I suppose things were less complicated then.” Ron will showcase his 1959 FC sedan in the state titles at the All GM Day alongside Mick’s beloved ute. Around 50 FE and FC Holdens from Victoria, ACT and NSW will join the event, as well as a highly anticipated Shannons’ ‘big rig’ semi-trailer. A wide selection of food vendors will be available throughout the day. The family friendly event commences at 9am this Sunday, March 12, at Wangaratta’s Apex Park and entry is free.

Stable weather good for fishing If you have not tried fishing for Murray cod with surface lures, now is as good a time as any to try, and Lake Mulwala is the place to go. A boat is handy in Lake Mulwala but certainly not a necessity as plenty of cod have been caught from the edges of the lake. One place that I like to fish from the bank in Lake Mulwala is about 100 meters downstream from the playground at the Hogan’s Road boat ramp.

THE recent stable weather has led to some fantastic Murray cod fishing right across North East Victoria. Once this stable weather breaks, I am expecting the fishing to quieten right down, but for now, enjoy it while it lasts. Lake Mulwala has been fishing very well with regular reports coming in from all over the place. Most reports I’ve received have been of cod trolled on hard body lures just about anywhere in the lake, and cod being caught on surface lures in the shallow sections of the lake, as well as around the margins of the lake near weed beds and structure. Surface fishing for Murray cod has absolutely exploded in recent years.

Meanwhile, the trout fishing has really improved in the last couple of weeks too as the longer nights and shorter days lead to cooler water. I have fished in quite a few different streams with both flies and lures, and they have all been fishing quite well. I did really well earlier in the week in a small tributary of the King River on a dark coloured Strike Tiger soft plastic. I received a report of reasonable trout fishing in the Kiewa River near Mt Beauty last week, with four trout caught and one lost, all around the 30cm size and have also heard of a few trout being caught in the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale on bladed spinners.

Cajun chicken burger with yoghurt sauce and cabbage slaw Method: 1. Stir together the yoghurt, mustard and dill. Set aside for serving. 2. Heat the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. Coat the chicken with paprika and cumin. Add skin side down and cook for 2-3 minutes each side or until done to your liking. Remove from pan. 3. Meanwhile, combine rocket, spring onions, and zucchini ribbons and drizzle over olive oil and lemon juice. 4. Combine the ingredients for the slaw, top with sesame seeds and set aside. 5. Spoon a little yoghurt onto each burger bun. Cut each chicken tenderloin in half and place on yoghurt. Top with rocket salad and serve with side of cabbage slaw.

DID you know that only five per cent of the universe is actually observable? The rest of the universe consists of what is known as dark energy (70%) and dark matter (25%), neither of which can be directly observed. And while we haven’t directly detected dark matter, it’s known to exist because of studies of the rotation rates of galaxies carried out by researchers like Fritz Zwicky and Vera Rubin. The properties of dark matter can only be inferred from its gravitational effects such as the impact is has on visible matter, as well as the impact it has on the cosmic microwave background (radiation left over from the time of the Big Bang). Without a doubt, dark matter is one of the biggest mysteries of cosmology, with only two major (and difficult to test) hypotheses to explain what it even is. One hypothesis is that dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) - types of particles that don’t interact with the matter we can observe, but nonetheless exert a gravitational force. The other hypothesis is that it consists of MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs) - objects that are invisible to telescopes (such as black holes, brown dwarfs and

So while we don’t exactly know what dark matter is, thanks to researchers at Yale university we now know where it resides in three galactic clusters. The team at Yale used gravitational lensing (a technique that utilizes the gravitational
bending of light around a galactic cluster to effectively create a giant space magnifying glass), in order to map the dark matter in the clusters. Using images for the Hubble Space Telescope, the team measured the distortions caused by gravitational lensing on background galaxies which showed where invisible masses were still bending space around it enough to cause lensing events.
These ‘anomalous’ distortions were then mapped out, giving a clearer a picture of where the dark matter was located in the galactic clusters. To give an impression of how these observations were made, try looking through a cylindrical glass of lemonade and notice how objects in the background are distorted in a relatively even curve. Now observe the bubbles in
the lemonade and notice how the curved distortion is broken by the bubbles. This is roughly how the dark matter was mapped, and by doing so, astrophysicists may gain a better understanding of how it clumps and just what it might be made of. The study was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
