THE lives and achievements of women and minorities can often take a back seat as far as the history books are concerned. Some facts or events only come to light after careful research many generations later. The work of Wandiligong based author Diann Talbot has helped tell the often forgotten stories of women who married Chinese miners on the Upper Ovens goldfields during the mid 19th century. Published last year, the book has attracted much attention, and was even shortlisted in November for a Victorian Community History award. Diann said that was one of her proudest achievements in a career largely spent researching and writing about history. Her fascination began a few years ago when she began researching her family history, and was looking for information about family members buried in the Bright Cemetery. “I’ve just always been interested in history,” she said. One thing led to another, and she ended up writing a book on local pioneers buried in the cemetery. Over the years she has also written about the long history of the tobacco industry, as well as a book showcasing local landmarks “then and now” to show how the area has developed over the years. She has also written about the Buckland Valley riots. In her ongoing research about the large Chinese presence on the local goldfields, Diann became fascinated with finding out more about Australian women who married Chinese miners. “Most of the local history focuses on what the men did,” she said. “The pioneer women don’t get much of a mention.” continued page |
