FOR as long as she can remember, Michelle Turnbull has always been at her happiest playing sport and being part of a team. Even as a child growing up in Wangaratta, few things could keep her away from a sporting match, from netball to volleyball, soccer and even AFL. “I love team sports because of that feeling of being part of a family that are all working towards the same goal,” Michelle said. “I enjoy and love learning off others and also passing my skills onto others.” These days she can found in the vibrant purple uniform putting herself on the line as a member of female gridiron team, the Melbourne Maidens - part of the Ladies Gridiron League (LGL). Michelle “fell in love” with gridiron during her university days, watching as many matches on television as she could when she was not able to watch her favourite NRL matches. Approached by a female team to play the game after moving to Melbourne, she was hooked straight away. “I think I was always meant to play contact sport….there is something in the way I feel when I use my power and strength to make a tackle or run through someone,” she said. “It’s definitely the adrenalin – give me grounded, hard hitting sport any day over skydiving. “I have enjoyed pushing myself to a peak of fitness that I didn’t think I would ever reach. “Gridiron is quite incredible at finding muscles you didn’t even know existed.” And, as in her school days, Michelle thrives on the camaraderie of the team environment. “Maidens is like my second family,” she said. continued page |
