by KYLIE WILSON NOW better known for their achievements in aircraft engineering, England’s Armstrong-Siddeley company spent 40 years creating luxury cars in the 20th century.

And although their car manufacturing days are long over, there remains many passionate devotees of the vehicles that were made during this time.

Many of them are set to gather from across Australia in Beechworth this month as part of the national Armstrong-Siddeley Car Club annual rally occurring in Beechworth on March 17.

Among them will be Beechworth resident Graham Caron, a proud owner of two Armstrong-Siddeley vehicles.

He has had an affinity for the vehicles ever since purchasing “a stripped down wreck” of a 1953 model back in 1997, which he spent over a decade restoring into a roadworthy vehicle.

Warning over shadow shop scam impersonating ASIC ASIC is warning the public to be wary of a scam where cold callers are claiming to be undertaking a ‘shadow shop’ on behalf of ASIC. A shadow shop is where real consumers are recruited to purchase services such as financial advice to help assess the standards in the market.

These scammers claim to be looking for shadow shoppers as part of an ASIC compliance and monitoring campaign.

The scam maintains that it will pay you for your time and may encourage you to meet in person or attend a presentation after which you will receive a questionnaire to complete.

The scammers promote their services at the following website, www.theshadowshopper.com that makes false representations that their work is associated with ASIC. ASIC has no involvement with this website or its operators, and is undertaking inquiries into the activities of the operators.

ASIC urges anyone who receives contact in these circumstances or

is referred to this website to not respond.

What about the roots?

AN unforgettable sight of inland Australia are Sturt’s Desert Peas.

Their profusion of brilliant red and black flowers are held above grey-green scrambling runners in brilliant ‘cartwheels’ of 6 or 7 blooms.

The explorer William Dampier first gathered specimens of the flowers in 1699.

The common name honours Captain Charles Sturt, who sighted great swathes of these beauties during his 1844 inland expedition.

Packeted seed is available for enthusiastic gardeners and can be grown successfully in deep pots or in the ground.

In nature the peas grow in red sand overlaying a moist and nutrient-rich clay base – perfect conditions for the deep roots.

To grow the plants successfully, it’s important to mimic the natural growing conditions.

Sturt’s Desert Peas do not tolerate their roots being disturbed, so plant the seeds in their permanent position.

Prepare a sunny site in early spring.

30 cm from the surface. Inserting a poly-tube or inverting a plastic 2 litre bottle with the base removed will help with getting water where it is needed.

After scarifying (cracking) the seed coats by immersing in boiling water, plant and cover lightly with soil and keep moist.

Seeds will germinate within a few days. Keep up the moisture, fertilize regularly with an all-round water-soluble fertilizer and protect from snails.

Plants should flower from around Christmas.

Sturt’s Desert Peas are annuals.

They are not frost-tolerant.

Mature seeds pods may be kept for planting the following spring.

Protect from chewing grubs and other critters by storing in a zip-top bag in your freezer.

Feline cystitis with LINDA BRADBURY, Veterinarian patient falls into.

Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), the most common diagnosis, is inammation of the lining of the bladder due to an unknown cause.

There appears to be a strong link between FIC and stress/anxiety.

Cats who are overweight or conďŹ ned exclusively indoors also seem to be more prone.

Treatment for FIC is generally limited to providing pain relief while waiting for the episode to pass (generally 3-5 days) and attempting to increase the cat’s water intake.

This can be easier said than done, and involves placing multiple water bowls all around the home, and changing food from dry to wet.

There are also prescription diets available which may help to decrease the incidence of FIC. Taking steps to decrease anxiety in cats is also be very helpful in reducing recurrence.

Signs of urinary tract disease in male cats should always be taken especially seriously, as they have a much thinner urethra which is prone to becoming blocked when there is inammation of the urinary tract.

Graham proudly said he built or sourced much of what he needed for the project on his own, apart from outsourcing the upholstery work. “I’m pretty well a do it yourself sort of person,� he said. “Old cars can be addictive.�

Graham said he purchased the car as a project simply because he “liked the shape and the look of it�, but each year he has grown more attached to working on the vehicle and socialising with fellow Armstrong-Siddeley owners.

A few years ago he also bought a 1956 model, but he said improvements on that machine are still a “work in progress�.

His 1953 vehicle has seen a lot of travel over the years, being driven to rallies as far north as Queensland and Broken Hill. “They’re a good car for long dis-

Robin said the car has a long history in the region, having formerly been used at Baileys of Glenrowan before he bought it in the mid 1990s, and he has done lots of work on it over the years.

He has long appreciated Armstrong-Siddeley cars, saying his ďŹ rst car was also made by the company.

He said the lines of the car “just take your fancyâ€? and he enjoys working not only on his car, but also on the various steam trucks he has on his property. “I’m always ďŹ xing machines,â€?

Robin said, adding that he is looking forward to mixing with fellow owners at the upcoming rally, and seeing the range of other Armstrong-Siddeley cars.

Next year will see the centenary of the formation of the company, a milestone many Armstrong-Siddeley vehicle owners are quite excited about.

The public will be able to see a display of Armstrong-Siddeley vehicles between 9-11.30am at Beechworth’s Police Paddocks, behind the former courthouse building on Saturday, March 17.

Graham said he loved showing off his car at rallies. “People come over to have a look and ask me about it,� he said.

Graham said this month’s event is the ďŹ rst time it has returned to Beechworth in 15 years, with the rally previously having been held in the town in 2003.

He said the appeal of the vehicles was that they are “one of the more prestigious English makes, although they are not so well known�.

Graham added that because of the company’s indelible link with aircraft design, “they’re very well engineered, prestige cars� and became more and more aerodynamically designed as time went on.

Graham is not the only one in the family with an afďŹ nity for British vehicles – his wife Pauline, drives a classic Morris Minor 1000, which also draws plenty of comments from onlookers when the pair are out and about.

Challenging times between seasons

ďŹ shing report to YouTube, and last week he reported an increase in the number of Murray cod being caught in Lake Mulwala which is great news. Tony’s reports are always credible.

I went ďŹ shing at Lake Buffalo with my dad last Wednesday.

We ďŹ shed for four or ďŹ ve hours before the hot northerly wind almost blew us off the lake.

In the time we were there we

managed to catch somewhere around 50 redďŹ n, give or take a few.

Of all of those ďŹ sh, we kept seven.

Of those seven ďŹ sh there was only one ďŹ sh that you would consider calling a decent redďŹ n - the average size of the ďŹ sh was quite small.

Most of our redďŹ n were caught on small Strike Tiger nymph soft plastics.

We did pick up a few redďŹ n on small yabbies, and a couple trolling Halco Crazy Deep lures, however it was the small soft plastics that outperformed anything else.

I was talking to a friend during the week who ďŹ shed at Lake Buffalo last weekend and his report was very similar - heaps of small ďŹ sh.

He said most of his redďŹ n were caught on worms and that he could barely get a bite on yabbies.

CHANGE is certainly in the wind as the cod ďŹ shing becomes erratic and the redďŹ n ďŹ shing comes to life.

Over the last week I have been ďŹ shing for Murray cod in the Wangaratta area twice.

On the ďŹ rst evening I caught nothing, and the second evening I managed one small Murray cod, taken on a small surface lure called a Deps Buzzjet.

Admittedly I was not there long, only an hour or so after tea each evening, but I was there at the best time of the day.

I have had some half decent reports from Lake Mulwala of a few Murray cod being caught on spinnerbaits and surface lures, although I have to admit the reports have not been coming in thick and fast.

Holidays important for recuperation

WHEN was the last time you had a holiday?

Last year in clinic, I noticed that many clients who were burnt out and suffering fatigue related conditions had not made use of their annual leave.

Brown Brothers Prosecco IT seems the whole of the country has gone crazy for Prosecco.

The easy to drink sparkling has fans of all ages and thanks to the concerted efforts and some savvy marketing by local winemakers, the King Valley has become known as the home of Prosecco in Australia.

So it’s no wonder the local industry is concerned by murmurings emerging from Italy they’d like to restrict the use of the term “Prosecco”, declaring the grape variety is no more, and the word is now a geographical indicator of Italy.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1929 AN airforce aircraft crashed and incinerated a mechanic during a refuelling stop in Wangaratta.

The plane was flying from Richmond to Point Cook, and made a routine landing in the Wangandary-Killawarra area on March 7, 1929.

After refuelling, the plane’s take off over a bumpy section of ground

left the plane badly balanced, and it narrowly missed a fence, turned sharply, and clipped a tree before the wing snapped and the plane nosedived to the ground.

Pilot Thomas Swinburne of Richmond, NSW was able to escape the cockpit, but the plane’s mechanic, Herbert Worland, was trapped and incinerated.

Delicious Greek lamb kofta THIS recipe from Perfection Fresh makes six serves and is great for an autumn picnic or taste tempting lunch.

Method Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 minutes until soft.

Increase heat to medium-high, add pine nuts and cook for two minutes until light golden.

Transfer to a bowl, set aside to cool. Wipe frying pan clean.

Add mince, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, tomato paste, breadcrumbs, currants and parsley to the onion mixture.

Season and mix until well combined.

Roll tablespoons of mixture into a kofta shape.

Place onto a plate, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes if time permits.

Heat the remaining oil in the large frying pan over medium heat.

Add half the kofta and cook, turning often, for 10 minutes or until browned and cooked through.

Remove to a plate and repeat with remaining kofta.

Combine the yoghurt, tahini and half the sesame seeds.

Spread both sides of each roll with the yoghurt mixture.

Cut the cucumbers each into thirds lengthways.

Fill the rolls with the cucumber and kofta.

Sprinkle with the remaining sesame seeds and extra parsley if desired. Season and serve.

The tumultous and dogged history of video games VIDEO-gaming has come a long, long way since its inception.

These days, you can usually expect hyper-realistic graphics (or an excellently rendered, stylised aesthetic), along with terrific innovations in gameplay that make you think, or truly challenge your motor skills.

Not to mention, of course, the leaps and bounds being made in immersive virtual reality kits that literally put you inside a game.

But it wasn’t always like this, and depending on the way you might interpret the checkered history of video games and their consoles, gamers might consider themselves lucky to have video games at all.

This week, we’re taking a look at some pivotal points in early video game history.

A market about to burst The 80’s might be considered the

wild-west of video game history.

At the beginning of 1983, video game revenues in North America had peaked at $3.2 billion dollars.

There was little in the way of legal protections for intellectual property when it came to consoles, and as a result, every software and hardware engineer and their dogs were doing their best to copy, steal, clone and rip-off the popular consoles of the day - namely the Atari 2600 - and create their own, rebranded version of the console.

Along with this were a slew of legitimate, unique consoles vying for the money inside parent’s wallets.

To top it off, home computer system technology was experiencing a boom, placing pressure and competing with dedicated video game consoles.

In short, the market was saturated, and consumers were left with

a quagmire of inferior consoles to choose from.

The rise of third-party game development Adding to this, a landmark case involving third-party software development was settled late in 1982, between Atari and a small, nascent company of defected coders and artists.

In essence, these former employees of Atari were displeased that the company did not allow credits to appear in games, just as film and music industry workers were credited, and had decided to branch out on their own and make their own games.

Atari attempted to sue them in a bid to prevent sales but ultimately failed to do so, legitimising the small company’s right to develop games.

It’s funny to think, but had history gone a different way, Mario the single most iconic video game character - may have never seen the light of day on western shores, and perhaps not at all.

In fact, after the huge consumer backlash due to abused trust, people were extremely hesitant to invest in the video game industry at all in America.

Looking at the booming industry today, it’s nearly impossible to believe it might not have existed, at least like it is today.

Those in favour of Australia helping refugees find safety here rail against the Federal Government for its hard-line policy while those that favour our no boats allowed attitude have little sympathy for the refugees’ reasons for making such a hazardous trip.

For many television viewers the mere hint of the issue coming onto the screen is enough for them to hit the remote control but in the case

BEST LAID PLANS: When some holidaymakers on a sailing trip come across a refugee boat they don’t realise how much it will change their lives. of the new SBS drama series ‘Safe Harbour’ that would be a terrible mistake.

Safe Harbour is described as a bold new psychological thriller about a group of friends whose sailing holiday of a lifetime alters their lives forever after they cross paths with a struggling fishing boat overloaded with asylum seekers en-route to Australia.

The Australians decide to tow the refugees, but when they wake the next morning the fishing boat is gone.

Five years later they learn the truth – someone cut the rope between the two boats, with tragic consequences.

For most of us there are no personal physical consequences if refugees are abandoned at sea or not, but ‘what if’ we had assisted such a boat in distress one minute only to find next day the boat had been let loose by a shipmate and then some five years later we came face to face with one of the people we had deserted who is now a taxi-driver.

We then learn that because of our actions seven people on the boat died, including the daughter of the taxi-driver.

Even just viewing the trailer there is a sense of foreboding that will make it hard not to tune into this spellbinding plot.

Safe Harbour has superb production values, great cast and sense of maturity and quality not often viewed on Australian television.

Forget reality tv, this is more like the real thing.

Safe Harbour airs over four weeks, premiering tonight at 8.30pm on SBS.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Agatha Christie’s Criminal Games (SBS on demand) A new, comedic, sexy spin on the British crime writer’s work in a manner only the French can get away with.

Knightfall (SBS, 9.30pm, Thursday) Filling the spot vacated by Vikings, this is not a bad replacement. It follows the adventures of the Knights Templar in search of the Holy Grail in France but with plenty of sword fighting, double-crossing and bed swapping to ease the tension.

Hard Quiz (ABC, 8pm, Wednesday) Our favourite quiz show hosted by Tom Gleeson has returned and is even funnier. Only the best contestants seem to get an invite.
