ACROSS Australia, humble country halls in rural communities are the spot for celebrating milestones, working on community issues, entertaining the locals or even putting on a humble morning tea fundraiser. And Murmungee’s hall, central to a local population of around 50 families, is no exception, being the centre of tireless community efforts to maintain and improve it. It has almost 150 years of history, having been erected in 1869 by local residents for use as a school, hall and church, first opening on a chilly July day in that year. Generations of Murmungee locals have experienced pivotal moments in their lives within its walls – learning, praying, working, falling in love and enjoying each other’s company. The hall and its tranquil bushland surrounds are famous across the North East for the large Australia Day celebrations every year. The hall, classified as a Heritage listed building in 1968, has had something of a restoration and resurgence in the past decade, thanks to a dedicated and passionate core of community volunteers. Resident Gordon Anderson, an architect who lived in Murmungee as a child and made a treechange to return there in 2002, has helped plan much of the renovations and refurbishments, as well as handling many of the grant applications the project has required. “I’ve always had a tie to the North East,” he said. For Maureen Rae, who was born and bred in Murmungee, the hall holds fond memories. continued page |

GARDEN HINTS

Weeds, weeds, weeds WITH CHRIS FEBVRE, NEM CREATIVE DESIGNER

RED VS BLUE: Our genetic predisposition toward tribalism can influence our voting habits, clouding a dispassionate assessment of merit and policy, and causing us to favour a particular colour of ‘war paint’.

How we vote, neuroscientifically BORING. That’s the word many Australian voters and news commentators have used to describe the Australian federal election for 2016. For those people, it could have been likened to voting for your favourite wet blanket. Sure, one’s red, one’s blue, one’s green and possibly made of hemp, but at the end of the day they’re all soggy, uncomfortable, and likely to house mildew. Whatever your thoughts, our election was certainly no ‘Brexit’ referendum or Trump versus Clinton campaign. But it’s the juxtaposition of these loud and soft political campaigns that led me to consider neuroscience, psychology, and the effect neural circuit triggers have on our voting habits. In his recently completed investigation into the neuroscience of human aggression, Dr. R. Douglas Fields, Ph.D found that individual violent behaviour and the neural circuitry that triggers it - was causally linked to group violence and aggression. In neuroscientific terms, the mnemonic ‘LIFEMORTS’ identifies the nine specific triggers of the neural circuits of aggression. When speaking in terms of highly contentious political campaigns with an emphasis on immigration policy, the ‘T’ - standing for ‘Tribe’, is targeted and triggered. Given that human beings can only survive as a communal species (we don’t last long on our

own against predators in the wild), it has been an evolutionary imperative to be a member of a socially cohesive tribe. And when considering that our access to resources has often - in historical terms - been limited, we have a hardwired predisposition to be wary, and often aggressive, toward not only predator species, but other human ‘tribes’ as well. This aggression trigger, while once a key to our survival, has now become something of a double edged sword. There are certainly still instances in which it protects us, but it can also present itself as a liability in this modern era of global communication and trade. Make no mistake, while Donald Trump might have an estranged relationship with the truth, and a strange relationship with reality, he understands the concept tribalism very well. He knows that exaggerations in the service of triggering aggression will be overlooked as long as he can maintain people’s tribalistic nature. In Britain, a similar situation just unfolded, leaving many to drop their tribal drums of protest and frantically search Google to find out exactly what sort of tribe it was that they were sure they disliked and departed from. Ah, politics. One day, centuries from now, we’ll all live happily in each other’s company on Earth. It’ll be those shady Martians we’re suspicious of. And the cry will go out, ‘Build that forcefield.’

AFTER all the rain we have had lately, the weeds are popping up everywhere. Weeds appear overnight in garden beds, lawns and pathways. A weed is a plant growing in the wrong place. Running grasses like couch and kikuyu are desired as a lawn grass, yet considered a weed when growing in garden beds. While annual rye grass is often found in blended lawn seed mixes, it is considered to be a weed when growing in running grassed lawn areas. Start managing weeds now by removing them while they are small. Hand weeding is an effective way to keep weeds under control. Do a little bit of hand weeding while walking around the garden each day. Dig out individual plants with a weed grubber or spot spay with glysophate. Another way to control weeds is to use a selective weed killer. Weed ‘n’ Feed is a convenient hose on product which combines weed killer with a lawn fertiliser. It kills the weeds and feeds the lawn at the same time. It kills broad-leafed weeds including capeweed, clover, cudweed, dandelions, lawn daisies, oxalis and thistles. For buffalo lawns use Buffalo Weed

WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST

‘n’ Feed. Bindii is a soft, ferny-leafed plant that only reveals the nasty side of its nature when it develops its sharply-barbed seeds during summer. These can make walking on the lawn in bare feet an utter misery. Use bindii and clover weeder to eradicate bindii in lawns or bindii and broadleaf weeder for buffalo lawns. Not all products are suitable for all lawn varieties. If you are not sure what type of grass your lawn is, take samples of your grass type and the weeds to your garden centre for identification and advice on which spray to use. Sticky weed is named because of the tiny hooked barbs on the stem and leaves which stick to virtually anything. Paterson’s curse, nicknamed patto, features beautiful purple and pink flowers. Both can invade garden beds and bare soil. Spray with glyphosate or hand remove while small. Don’t let the weeds take over.

Convulsing cows LUSH grass pastures and lactating cows are unfortunately the perfect combination for dead cows. The loss of just three wellconditioned cows could mean PVU PG ZPVS IPMJEBZ GVOE Over winter and into spring, grass tetany (hypomagnesaemia = low magnesium) will be the cause of many sudden deaths in cattle. Cold, cloudy and rainy conditions see a rise in the number of cases particularly when this is followed by a warm period. There are many predisposing factors for grass tetany which include lush pastures that have been heavily fertilised with nitrogen or potassium, an episode of reduced feed intake as seen with bad weather, low calcium diets, or infectious diarrhoea. Clinical signs relate to nerve and muscle issues including ear twitching, grinding of the teeth, muscle tremors and aggression. These cows are usually

highly responsive to noise and other stimuli and can charge anything. The most acute cases show spasms, convulsions, frothing and death within minutes. Treatment involves giving magnesium and calcium solutions (such as 4in1) intravenously. Sometimes the really aggressive girls need sedation first. The IV treatment needs to be given slowly due to the risk of death and their heart is generally monitored throughout. Hence, this is usually conducted by a veterinarian. Initial treatment is followed by oral magnesium (such as hay with Causemag) for 1-2 days, as relapses are common. Hay treated with Causemag is also the most common preventative. Other options include magnesium in water, magnesium licks or rumen bullets.

Most importantly, minimise the risks such as reducing stressful periods in late pregnant and lactating cattle. If grass tetany is a big problem on your farm prevention should include pasture management to ensure cattle are receiving adequate magnesium. There are a number of reputable grass tetany resources online including the Agriculture Victoria website, or contact your local veterinarian Alistair Chatto, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic

SCHOOL DAYS (ABOVE): An image dating back to circa 1893 of the Murmungee Hall, back when the building served as the local school (it was used for that purpose until 1938). PROUD MOMENT (LEFT): Local residents Kauri and John Rouch and Gordon Anderson with the recently erected hall sign, featuring the site’s history, when it went up in 2015.

Her father and his siblings went to school at the hall when it was a school, prior to it closing in 1938, with students walking or riding horses to attend. Her own memories of the hall range from the familiarity of CWA meetings to the fun of local dances and community events. “It is a hub of the community, she said. Gordon and Maureen said that since the 2009 bushfires, there has been a concerted effort to help restore the hall. Works have included: t DPODSFUF BOE QPMZ UBOLT QMVNCJOH and firefighting infrastructure and tree planting (through the Alpine Indigo Whole of Landscape Project and Static Water Project, including much work by local resident Cathy Sonnemann); t TUBHF POF JNQSPWFNFOUT XPSUI

Gordon said all work done had been entirely funded by the community and outside sources, adding that building more accessible and improved bathroom facilities to the site was high on the committee’s agenda. “I don’t know how a little community would survive without a hall, said Maureen.

The importance of convalescence AS naturopaths we commonly see people with recurrent colds/flus or other immune dysfunction. A common cold is a great sign that the body is working well and has the energy/reserves to mount an immune attack and kill off unwanted pathogens. A healthy individual should get sick, mount an immune response, convalesce and bounce back within 7-10 days feeling the same or better than what they did prior to getting sick. Naturopaths have a wonderful toolbox of remedies to treat both acute and long term colds. But convalescence is one thing we talk about regularly with our clients and it seems to be the hardest thing to achieve. What is convalescence I hear you ask? Convalescence is the time that your body requires to fully recover and rebuild strength after an illness or injury. Put simply it is the body’s need for “down time to recover from the battle that has been raging inside you. Sticky Asian lamb with sesame fried rice

2014 Sparkling Red Around $27

STICKY and delicious, this hearty Asianinspired lamb leg recipe is perfect for a special night in at home. Embrace the cold and cozy up indoors with dishes like this one from the team at BeefandLamb.com.au. Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160° fanforced). 2. In a large non-stick frying pan, heat half of the peanut oil over medium-high heat. Cook the lamb for 8 to 10 minutes, or until browned on all sides. 3. Meanwhile, in a large jug combine the soy sauces, vinegar, half the ginger, two cloves of garlic, lemongrass, chilli, star anise and half the sesame oil. Place lamb in a roasting pan and pour sauce over lamb, brushing to coat. Roast lamb for 60 minutes for rare, 75 minutes for medium or 90 minutes for well done, covering with foil if overbrowning. 4. Once lamb is cooked to your liking, remove meat from pan and set aside covered in foil for 15 minutes. Skim any fat from the sauce, and strain into a bowl. 5. For the sesame rice heat the remaining peanut oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the onion with the remaining ginger and garlic for 1 to 2 minutes or until slightly golden. Add ¼ cup of reserved sauce and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the Chinese broccoli, capsicum and sugar snaps and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add rice and heat through for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat and toss through sesame seeds. 6. Serve lamb with reserved sauce and sesame rice topped with green onions and coriander.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON It pops and pours beautifully and totally delivers when it comes to fruitiness, flavour and good cheer. The colour is a deep crimson and there are intense aromas of forest fruits and black pepper to really be savoured. The flavour is rich and moreish with lashings of ripe berry and black cherry and there is an almost toasty, dark chocolate depth before a lightly sweet finish. Enjoy it with roast duck; but it’s also ideal as an aperitif or nightcap. It’s great now but can be cellared for up to five years, which means I can save a bottle for the day I’ll toss this year’s paperwork in the skip. Visit the cellar door in Rutherglen or go to www. rutherglenestates.com.au.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Bright Church of England, 1870 THE ceremony of laying the foundation stone of All Saints Church was carried out with great pageantry on July 6, 1870. District bands and lodges turned out and marched in procession to the site, which commanded a good view of the town; the choir sang, the Rev Matthews read from the scriptures, Mr DT Hughes handed a silver mounted trowel to Archdeacon Tucker, and the deed was done.

Rising overtime: Are you paid for the hours you actually work?

T

hree in ten (30 per cent) organisations increased overtime and extra hours during the last 12 months, according to recruiting experts Hays. For 62 per cent of nonaward staff, this overtime was unpaid. Based on findings in the 2016 Hays Salary Guide, of the 30 per cent of organisations in Australia that increased overtime, 36 per cent did so by five hours or less per week. A further 31 per cent said overtime was up five to 10 hours per week, and 10 per cent said overtime was up by more than 10 hours each week. Employers also reported increasing overtime at month end and year end.

60 per cent of employers said overtime and extra hours worked remained the same year-on-year. Just 10 per cent managed to decrease overtime. “Business activity is increasing, and while employers are prepared to add to their headcount they also expect their existing staff to chip in and help with rising workloads, says Nick Deligiannis, Managing Director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand. “But with employers keeping the salary purse strings tight, and 62 per cent of non-award staff not being paid for their overtime, bosses need to seriously consider the financial, as well as

physical and emotional, impact of the extra work on their employees. “Perhaps it’s time for employers to stop listening to the economic pessimists and instead take the position that their organisation can afford to pay overtime. “After all, almost twothirds of employers (64 per cent) say they experienced increased business activity over the past 12 months, and 70 per cent expect further increased activity in the year ahead. “There could also be a good business case for adding a permanent or temporary member to the team to help relieve pressure on existing staff, he said.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

Satisfaction with your bank? WE have seen the end of another financial year, Britain’s exit from the EU and a federal election take place, so now may be the time for you to shop around for a better home loan. I have been reading with interest the last week or so about how one of our largest credit agencies has been providing information to the banks, that you have approached another financial institution about a loan. It worries me that this sort of thing is happening; I thought this would have been an organisation where privacy was paramount - or do they have a few bad apples in the organisation? It would appear that record numbers of home owners are looking to re-finance their mortgages, driven by ultra-low interest rates and banks desperate to get your business.

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

kenclarke11@bigpond.com In April the number of new owner-occupied home owners who re-financed existing mortgages, rather than buying or building a new home reached 36 per cent, which is the highest share since records began in the early 1990s. Some surveys conducted indicated that even more are considering a switch to a rival bank. Those surveyed who had switched or were considering it, said the key reason was the very low interest rate being offered. In this day and age this is how

competition is meant to work. Charles Littrell, an executive at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), put it well at a financial conference recently. “If any of you are paying more than four per cent on your mortgage, please get off your backside and go talk to a home loan broker,” he said. “People who are borrowing half a million or more on their home loan should not ignore the price of that home loan.” Banks are offering deep discounts off their advertised rates, sometimes with a whopping 1.5 percentage points less than their headline rate. Fixed rate loans are as low as 3.69 per cent, and the number of customers fixing it has soared. Switching banks, or threatening to as a negotiating tactic, can

save you thousands for a typical mortgage customer. But you need to look at the traps of negotiating a fixed rate loan as you are really taking a gamble that interest rates will remain where they are or go lower. When variable rates are lower than fixed rates, you are effectively paying a premium for the comfort of knowing that fixed rates will remain during the term of the loan. But the downside of a fixed term loan is that it’s harder to make additional repayments beyond the minimum, which you may want to do if your income rises or interest rates fall. It makes sense to me to think about how much you may be able to repay over the period of the fixed rate loan. If you make a decision to fix, then fix the amount that you cannot afford to pay off during the

term of the fixed rate loan. A failure to do this could leave you unable to make extra repayments on your loan in the future, which can help you pay off the loan at a faster rate. Some banks will allow you to pay off an amount in excess of your minimum fixed rate repayments. A common trap is fixing for too long, as getting out of a fixed rate loan before the end of the term can be very costly. Banks will offer fixed rate loans for five years or longer, but a lot can happen over that time. And if you need to sell for whatever reason be prepared for massive costs. My advice to you if you are contemplating a change, talk to your accountant, as he/she will be the best to advise on all the pitfalls associated with such a decision, taking this article with you.
