VIOLENCE against women, whether in the home or random public attacks, are more prevalent than ever, and local women’s health and support services are fighting hard to help remove the stigma for victims. The statistics are sobering: 34 women have been killed by their partners in Australia since the beginning of this year, and in our region police have made 451 referrals to Wangaratta’s Centre Against Violence in the first quarter of 2015 alone. Chief executive officer of Centre Against Violence, Kerry Burns, said that responses from a 2013 VicHealth survey showed that many people still make excuses for perpetrators of such violence. She said the survey showed many people still think it is okay to excuse domestic violence in cases where people get so angry they lose control (22 per cent of respondents); if people are under a lot of stress (12 per cent), or if the offender is affected by alcohol (9 per cent). Ms Burns said some people take the view that women invent or exaggerate reporting violence, but that perception was untrue. “Rates of violence against women and children – in public and private – tell us we’ve got a long way to go in Victoria,” she said. “We know violence does not solve problems. “It’s not OK, it’s never OK.” Ms Burns said one of the most dangerous times for a woman suffering from family violence is when she is leaving her partner or has started a new relationship. continued page |

What’s in your garden: My husband and I began creating the fairy garden about two and a half years ago when our first grandchild, Bonny, was born. It is set under a lovely fan palm. We built wooden edging around the palm then added soft fall mulch to not only make it aesthetically pleasing but also safe for the children to play in. We have used a variety of pot plants in the fairy garden, daisies being the most common as they are very hardy. We have tried to set out a variety of areas in our
garden to create points of interest, such as an area containing Australian native plants, a veggie patch, and an under cover deck which is surrounded by water features and ferns. One of my pet projects is a garden specially created to contain plants and cuttings that originally came from the families homestead in Beechworth. Favourite plant/spot in your garden: I have a couple of favourite spots, one is under the robina tree which is situated near the fairy garden, this way I can
keep an eye on those cheeky fairies. My other spot is on the decking surrounded by our beautiful ferns, this is my serine spot, this is where all the worries of the day melt away. Water saving/conservation tip: All of our gardens have been mulched or pine barked, depending on the look we are attempting to achieve. We also have set up a system to use the grey water from the bathroom to water the front garden. We have two large water tanks set up in the backyard which catch the rain water run off from the shedding.
AUTUMN is bulb planting season; not only flowering bulbs but also edible bulbs like garlic. Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic, is related to onion, shallot, leek, and chives. Garlic is easy to grow and can be grown nearly all year round. There are basically two types of garlic; soft necked and hard necked referring to the stem section just above the bulb. The variety available in supermarkets is the soft necked variety which is usually imported and treated with growth retardants and other chemicals prior to export. Around 80 per cent of garlic is imported - all the more reason to grow your own. Garlic bulbs for planting can be purchased from nurseries or online bulb suppliers now. The Diggers club have several heirloom varieties available. The supermarket variety is not suitable to plant in the garden. Garlic cloves can also be propagated from home grown bulbs. The most commonly available is “Australian white”. It is a soft necked, non-bolting type with white skin and purple markings. It is suitable for growing in the North East region as it requires a cold temperate climate with cold winters, a warm spring and a hot and dry summer. Garlic grows best in a sunny

position with well-draining soil. Before planting, improve the soil by digging in some compost and aged animal manure. Break the garlic into cloves and plant pointy side up to a depth of 2cm below the soil. Space them about 15cm apart. No need to water after planting, wait until they have germinated, then keep the soil moist but not wet. Apply a complete fertiliser every six weeks during winter, then feed with a nitrogen based fertiliser in early spring to help with bulb formation and size. Garlic takes around eight months to mature and is ready to harvest when the tops start to turn brown. They then need to be dried for a few weeks until the outer skin becomes dry and papery. Hang them in bunches or dry on racks in a protected airy position. Keep the bulbs whole as they store better than if separated. Happy gardening.

She said family violence does not only take the form of physical harm, but also psychological/ emotional abuse, sexual abuse, curtailing financial independence, or being prevented from seeing friends or family. The Centre Against Violence in Wangaratta assists women seeking help because of instances of family violence by assessing their needs. Ms Burns said instances of public violence, such as the murders of Masa Vukotic and Stephanie Scott, “can undermine women’s confidence about what they can do� and create an atmosphere of fear just as easily as domestic violence can do. “It harms all of us,� she said. Women’s Health Goulburn North East (WHGNE), who have helped many women in the region find the right resources to help change their situation, say that people suffering from family violence need to know there is help out there. “We really need to encourage women in this region to seek help,� said health promotion officer Rachael Mackay. Ms Mackay said people in the wider community

WHGNE’s Hume region family violence regional integration coordinator, Tammy Smith, said Australian culture as a whole also needs to change when it comes to family violence. “We really do need to challenge all of the community – men and women,� she said. “We need to talk about men and their attitudes towards women, and towards themselves,� she said, adding that there is help out there for offenders, or people who think they have the potential to commit family violence. Attitudes towards family violence will be discussed at a forum this Friday in Benalla, which will include an appearance by 2015 Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, a family violence survivor whose son was killed at the hands of her late husband. EUROPEAN wasps have been a big problem over summer, reaching plague proportions in some areas. There has been concern in the community as to the danger to our pets. Most animals when stung develop pain and localised swelling around the sting site. Less commonly, more serious lifethreatening anaphylactic reactions can occur. Similar to people, there are some individuals that are predisposed to developing these more severe allergic reactions, and once an animal has had one of these severe reactions, it is much more likely to re-occur if stung again. It has come to the attention of veterinary staff at the Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital that some residents have been poisoning the wasps by placing out parcels of cat food soaked in Ant-Rid. This is strongly advised against due to the risk of potential accidental poisoning to our pets. The toxic ingredient in Ant-Rid is boric acid. Boric acid is toxic to all cells in the body, with poisoning causing a range
of effects such as kidney, liver and brain damage. Signs of boric acid poisoning can mimic other types of poisoning, as well as snake bite envenomation, and include excessive drooling, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, wobbly or staggering gait, seizures and even death. If you suspect your pet has been poisoned veterinary advice should be sought immediately. European wasps are carnivores and are therefore attracted to meat. Ways to minimise potential exposure to our pets include avoiding feeding raw bones or meat during the day, feeding pets inside and cleaning up any left-over food or rubbish in the yard which may attract the wasps. With winter on its way the wasps are starting to go into hibernation and thankfully are becoming less of a problem. REDFIN reports have been filtering in over the last week or so. I have had several reports from Lake Hume ranging from decent catches of large redfin to anglers catching absolutely nothing. Cliff Karnatz is an Albury/Wodonga local who fishes Lake Hume regularly. I spoke to Cliff on Friday and he told me of some massive redfin up to 45cm that he had caught last week. Cliff trolled the redfin on Mcgrath wide body lures.
He said that he has had to work very hard for his fish. He reported that the fish are out there, and the big fish are willing to bite, but impatient anglers need not bother even trying to catch them as there is quite a lot of time between fish. It’s a similar story across the region with the Murray cod fishing at the moment - lots of casts for little results. A few cod have been turning up, but mainly by dedicated and persistent anglers. One shining light, however, is the Murray River between Lake Mulwala and Albury. This stretch of river has been fishing OK and I’ve had a few reports of Murray
cod being caught. Last week I had a photo printed of Jacob Winter-Weidner with a nice cod he caught from this area, well, this week he did it again, catching a lovely 53cm Murray cod on a surface lure. I have been up in the hills where I have found the trout have been very active. The fishing is varying from stream to stream with the Ovens River upstream of Bright producing the most consistent results. Trout have been caught in this area on lures, fly and even bait. The water in the trout streams is amazingly clear at the moment and a stealth-like approach is a necessity.

Toucinho do Ceu I HAVE pinched this gluten free Portugese almond cake recipe from Chef Adrian Richardson. Adrian is the chef and owner of La Luna Bistro in Carlton, he is also the chef on Good Chef bad Chef, on The Lifestyle Channel and Channel Ten. This is for all the gluten intolerant people, who still have a sweet tooth. Method Preheat oven to 165 degrees Celsius and grease the cake tin. In a saucepan on a medium heat, bring 450gm sugar and the water to the boil, until sugar dissolves. Add the butter and goose fat to the saucepan. Cook for five minutes, until mixture becomes translucent. Set aside until lukewarm. In a bowl, mix the almond meal with the cinnamon, sultanas and currants, lemon zest and almond essence.
Gently fold in the cooled down butter and sugar mixture into the bowl. Add the egg yolks and eggs into the mixture and stir in. Cook for 35–45 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm with pistachio nuts, whipped cream and dusted with icing sugar.

YOU can tell when Mother’s Day is just around the corner because dressing gowns and fluffy slippers are everywhere and bookshelves are bursting with soft porn in every shade of grey. It makes me think there is only one type of mum and she likes to sit on the couch, rather than the ones I know who manage businesses, drive tractors and save lives. One book chain thoughtfully recommends three titles for the “thinking” mum, which kind of implies it’s a niche pursuit the majority don’t engage in. It happens every year and the blokes cop the same kinds of stereotyping when Father’s Day rolls around, so I guess all we can do is make sure we express our individuality at every possible turn. And if beer is your drink of choice then good for you, but don’t be surprised if a pretty young thing like

Are you living in poverty? IF we can believe the Committee for Economic Development report, between one million to 1,500,000 Australians (four to six per cent of us) are living in poverty. Frightening isn’t it when we are kept being told how good it is to live in the ‘lucky country’. With 24 years of uninterrupted economic growth, how come so many Australians are living below the poverty line? The chief executive of the committee, Professor Stephen Martin, said governments of all persuasions had been too reliant on the ‘big stick’ approaches to improve employment figures, noting these did not work if people did not have a stable home or adequate skills or were in a low paying job. “This is not bleeding heart, left wing ideology,” Professor Martin said. “This is as much an economic issue as it is a social one.” The report uses two methods to define poverty. One includes looking at whether

kenclarke11@bigpond.com households have access to goods and services that are deemed necessary, such as a substantial meal at least once a day, access to medical treatment if needed and a separate bed for each child. The other looks at people’s social exclusion across seven areas, including employment, material resources and health. The report says poverty is a long term issue, with about 25 per cent of those exiting returning to being poor again within two years. With so many living in poverty what is happening to our living standards? When we look at wages in a
statistical way, they will indicate that nominal wages have increased at a healthy 3.5 to four per cent over most of the period since the year 2000. The fastest rate of growth during the period has been 4.3 per cent in 2008 at the end of a long build-up in commodity prices. The lowest was in 2013 when 2.5 per cent was the slowest growth on record, before increasing fractionally to 2.6 per cent in 2014. But this only tells part of the story. What is more important is what’s happening to real wages, after we take into account changes in cost of living. For most of the period since the turn of the century, real wage growth has been in the one to 1.5 per cent range. However, it changed sharply in 2013 and for the first time since the introduction of the GST in 2000, real wages fell. They rebounded somewhat in 2014, but this was not driven by
strong nominal wage growth, but the fact inflation was so low, largely due to falling petrol prices. And of course we now see the downturn in the mining sector which does not help. So where to from here? The outlook for wages and by extension living standards for Australian workers looks less rosy than it has been for many years. There are no signs of strong wages growth returning anytime soon. Unemployment has steadily ticked up, reaching its highest level for 13 years, meaning there is little competition driving wages. Business confidence remains low, so generally firms are reluctant to hire. Terms of trade have fallen, meaning that the price of goods and services that we produce are not rising as fast as the price of others’ goods and services that we consume and of course the Australian dollar is rapidly falling against the greenback.
While inflation is forecast to pick up again now the oil price falls have passed through, so any nominal wage growth will need to be commensurately higher to maintain existing growth in real wages. The bottom line is that Australian living standards will be under even more pressure than they have been for 20 years, even before one accounts for things like commuting and casualisation. In my reading from some surveys conducted, in 2002 the average Australian worker spent three hours and 37 minutes per week travelling to and from work. In 2014 this figure had increased to four hours 50 minutes. On the assumption that our average worker commutes for 46 weeks a year (deducting annual leave and public holidays) they are therefore commuting an extra 56 hours a year. So everything is not rosy in the lucky country by the shape of the economy.
