FOR Wandiligong based artist and ultra marathon participant Mat Vaughan, his love of art and being in the great outdoors is inextricably linked. He has been attracted to artistic pursuits for as long as he can remember, although he went into a career in electronics after school having being convinced by teachers that he may not make a living in art. Mat never gave up on his art, though, and encouraged by partner Nicki Letts, he did a part time art course for five years at RMIT, followed by a four year full time course at the Victorian College of the Arts. “The more I did it, and the more I surrounded myself with people from the art industry..I just enjoyed it more and more,” he said. After meeting Nicki - herself a writer - about 10 years ago - actively hiking and walking has been an increasingly large part of their lives, to the point where they have done several challenging ultra marathon (longer than 42km) events, including in the French Pyrenees and even Nepal. “The runs got longer and longer,” Mat said.
