Lillie’s leap to semi finalist

A LOCAL dancing star competed in the Australian Classical Grand Prix ballet competition last month, after being selected as one of 10 semi finalists for Victoria.

The Australia Classical Grand Prix (ACGP) is a prestigious ballet event for selected dancers to learn from ballet industry renowned instructors and showcase their ballet solos.

Lillie-Ann McPhee, aged 11, who trains with DanzWorx in Wangaratta, competed in the Junior Ballet Division in Sydney, and the young dancer said she was “so excited” when she found out.

“I had practised so much and did the best I could in my audition so I feel so proud to be selected,” she said.

“When I found out I called Michelle and Ms Jordyn straight away because I knew they would be really happy too.

“I am so thankful for all of their support, training and encouragement because I wouldn’t be able to do amazing opportunities like the ACGP without them.”

Red Wattlebird RED Wattlebirds (Anthochaera carunculata) are large honeyeaters easily identified by their fleshy reddish wattle on the side of the neck and are part of the Honeyeater family.

They live across southern Australia and are more frequent visitors to towns and suburbs in winter when they migrate in search of winter food.

They love to drink the nectar from flowers but they will also eat some insects and can be very aggressive towards other birds that have their eye on the same flowers.

Look out for Red Wattlebirds poking around under your eaves and gutters for spiders to take back to their chicks in the nest.

Red Wattlebirds can be difficult to see when they’re hiding amongst shrubs and bushes so listen for the loud, harsh ‘cookey cook’ and ‘tobacco box, tobacco box’ calls - they sound quite like the Noisy Friar Bird.

Grevilleas and paperbarks (melaleucas) provide some of the Red Wattlebird’s favourite food.

Bottlebrushes and other native trees are winter flowering natives, providing much needed food at this cold time of year and your wattlebirds will not let any of their nectar go to waste.

Starting their families does not only come with noisy announcements, you may also find that the wattlebirds become more aggressive in defending their nest sites and territories.

Like all native birds, the wattlebirds are protected, and there is not much you can do to discourage them from a favourite food tree.

I personally like a gathering of pots with a selection of different seedlings and bulbs.

YOUR HEALTH Brown Brothers Moscato Rosé

WHEN May rolls around it is hard to open a newspaper, watch television or enter a retail outlet without seeing wonderful ideas for how to spoil our mums on Mother’s Day. They are invariably soft and pretty - woolly scarves, plush pyjamas and fluffy slippers - or they are sweet, pink and shiny things to adorn a wrist or dab behind the ears.

Those things are lovely for some, but if your mum is more interested in four wheel driving or building a pergola on the house, roof racks or a nail gun might be better.

A friend of mine is dreaming about a high pressure cleaner and a good bottle of Scotch whiskey but she still fancies Brown Brothers Moscato Rosé with her scrambled eggs for brunch.

The wine is made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes with a small percentage of Cienna to give the Rosé colour.

It’s a fragrant and fruity wine with the aroma of musk sticks, berry fruit and blooming rose, which seem to be more enhanced because of the light effervescence.

The first interstate call had been made three months earlier, between Mr McGuaran, the manager of the Albury telegraph office, and Mr Cheyne at Wodonga.

An opportunity for grandparents DO you have difficulties getting the spoken message due to a hearing loss?

Are you regularly in contact with young children?

If the answer to both these questions is yes, you have a great opportunity to add something very special to the children in your life, especially if they are still quite young.

It is great to assist children, even pre-schoolers, to learn strategies to help you get the message.

If they begin practicing those techniques now, this will stay with them into adulthood.

They will be better communicators in the future, which is especially important as they encounter other people with hearing loss in their workplaces or personal life.

What suggestions can you make to encourage this?

Think about what you would like other people to do to assist you.

It is easier to get the message when you can see the speaker’s face

and when there is less background noise.

Give the child the idea by saying ‘I really like watching your face when we are talking’ or ‘you are talking at a great level for me to hear.’

Let the kids know when they are doing the right thing, trying to be positive in your comments.

It is better to replace comments like ‘you talk too fast (or loud or soft)’ with comments about the good things.

The child will then strive to be rewarded again by repeating the good behaviour (talking at the right level, speed, etc).

If there is too much noise, you can say something like ‘I really want to hear all about that, do you think we could turn off the radio for a while?’

If they frequently turn around to face the other way while talking, you can comment about how much you like to watch their face.

Children today are growing up with lots of technology in their lives.

They will be happy to have a look at your hearing aids and discover how they should look in your ears.

Don’t try to hide your hearing aids from them.

They are likely to be fascinated if you have recently updated your aids and you can connect directly via Bluetooth to your mobile phone or perhaps a television device to help you get the message better.

In fact, it won’t be long before they are able to assist you to learn how to use an app on your mobile to change the settings on your hearing aids.

Even the possibility of rechargeable hearing aids will be interesting for them.

While Lillie didn’t make it to the finals, she said she was honoured to have gone and had the experience.

“Attending the ACGP was a really amazing experience,” she said.

“I got to make new friends and I learnt so much, not just about ballet techniques but also about ballet etiquette and styles of performing ballet.

“Watching the other performers was really inspiring, they were all such incredible and beautiful dancers.

“I was really honoured to receive the encouragement award, I am already passionate about ballet but to receive that award from the adjudicator feels really good because it makes me want to try even harder to be accepted next year.

“The award also came with a prize

of a dance photoshoot so I am very excited about that.

“I really enjoyed taking the masterclasses with Ms Naomi, she was an excellent teacher and made what we were learning really enjoyable.

“We had the other adjudicators watching the masterclasses as well and they gave us some advice which was great because they have so much knowledge about ballet.

“Attending an event like the ACGP makes me really thankful for all of my training at Danzworx, because without Ms Jordyn and Michelle, I wouldn’t have made it as far as I did.

“I am really motivated to continue to work on my dance goals, improving my technique and working on my solo so that hopefully I can return to the ACGP next year.”

Your tax file number (TFN) and paying tax YOUR tax file number (TFN) is a unique number that helps you manage your tax and super.

If you need a TFN, or you don’t know what your TFN is, contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Everyone gets their own TFN and it’s yours for life.

If you work or receive Centrelink benefits you will need a TFN. When you start a job you need to give your employer your TFN by completing a ‘Tax file number declaration’ form - your employer will provide this form to you.

Your employer will usually deduct tax from each pay and send it to the ATO on your behalf.

This is called Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding.

You can see the amount of tax that has been taken out by your employer on your pay slip.

Your employer will also give you a payment summary at the end of the financial year (30 June) which shows how much you earned and how much tax you paid in that year.

You must submit a tax return to the ATO by 31 October if any tax was taken from your pay or you earned more than $18,200 in a financial year.

If you don’t submit a tax return, you may face a penalty.

After you complete your tax return, the ATO will determine if you will get a tax refund or need to pay a tax bill.

On the Australian Tax Office website, you can check how much tax your employer should be deducting from your pay and find out how to submit your first tax return.

◆ ON THE BITE: The region’s trout have been biting very well on worms recently, most likely due to recent rainfall washing them into the system naturally.

Brown trout are moving upstream ready to spawn THERE is movement in the trout streams... brown trout movement.

I can confirm that many brown trout have now made their way upstream ready to spawn.

I have not seen any sign of trout spawning yet as it is still a bit early, but over the next few weeks I suspect the brown trout will pair up and begin spawning later this month.

The rainbow trout will be a couple of months behind.

They usually start spawning around July, deep into the closed season.

I have been having some great success trout fishing with worms.

The recent rains must have added enough fresh water into the streams to trigger a bit of a ‘worm bite’ if there is such a thing.

I have caught trout on worms in several streams, either static angling in one deep pool, or drifting worms through pools as I make my way upstream.

For those that prefer to lure fish, I have also been having success with black soft plastics and small minnow lures.

I have had mixed reports from Lake Buffalo with some people catching good numbers of redfin while others struggle to find any fish.

The key up there is to look for the schools of redfin.

If you find a decent sized school it could change your day from a fishless trip to a fishing bonanza.

I have heard a couple of good reports of redfin being caught at the Waranga Basin, and from what I have heard the redfin have slowed down a bit at Lake Hume.

Many people are still catching fish, but once again the key is to move around and look for schools of fish.

For the cod fishermen Lake Mulwala has been fishing quite well this week.

There were quite a few Murray cod and yellowbelly caught in a competition running over the weekend.

The water level in Lake Mulwala is due to start falling this week, so there’s not a lot of time left for people with larger boats to wet a line there before the boat ramps are out of the water.

OGRES are like onions, and so is the Earth.

We rarely contemplate it, but beneath our feet are thousands of kilometres of solid and molten rock, metal and minerals.

This week, we’ll take a look at the complex layers that comprise the planet we call home.

The inner core This solid metal ball has a radius of 1,220 kilometres, or about three-quarters that of the moon. It’s located some 6,400 to 5,180 kilometres beneath Earth’s surface.

Extremely dense, it’s made mostly of iron and nickel. The inner core spins a bit faster than the rest of the planet.

It’s also intensely hot: Temperatures sizzle at 5,400º Celsius.

That’s almost as hot as the surface of the sun.

Pressures here are immense: well over 3 million times greater than on Earth’s surface.

The outer core This part of the core is also made from iron and nickel, just in liquid form.

It sits some 5,180 to 2,880 kilometres below the surface.

Heated largely by the radioactive decay of the elements uranium and thorium, this liquid churns in huge, turbulent currents.

That motion generates electrical currents.

They, in turn, generate Earth’s magnetic field.

The mantle At close to 3,000 kilometres thick, this is Earth’s thickest layer.

It starts a mere 30 kilometers beneath the surface.

Made mostly of iron, magnesium and silicon, it is dense, hot and semi-solid (think caramel candy).

Like the layer below it, this one also circulates.

It just does so far more slowly.

Near its upper edges, somewhere between about 100 and 200 kilometers underground, the mantle’s temperature reaches the melting point of rock.

Indeed, it forms a layer of partially melted rock known as the asthenosphere.

Geologists believe this weak, hot, slippery part of the mantle is what Earth’s tectonic plates ride upon and slide across.

Diamonds are tiny pieces of the mantle we can actually touch.

Most form at depths above 200 kilometers. But rare “super-deep” diamonds may have formed as far down as 700 kilometers below the surface.

These crystals are then brought to the surface in volcanic rock known as kimberlite.

The mantle’s outermost zone is relatively cool and rigid.

It behaves more like the crust above it.

Together, this uppermost part of the

mantle layer and the crust are known as the lithosphere.

The crust Earth’s crust is like the shell of a hardboiled egg.

It is extremely thin, cold and brittle compared to what lies below it.

The crust is made of relatively light elements, especially silica, aluminum and oxygen.

It’s also highly variable in its thickness.

Under the oceans (and Hawaiian Islands), it may be as little as 5 kilometers thick.

Beneath the continents, the crust may be 30 to 70 kilometers thick.

Along with the upper zone of the mantle, the crust is broken into big pieces, like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle.

These are known as tectonic plates.

These move slowly - at just 3 to 5 centimeters (1.2 to 2 inches) per year.

What drives the motion of tectonic plates is still not fully understood.

It may be related to heat-driven convection currents in the mantle below.

Some scientists think it’s caused by the tug from slabs of crust of different densities, something called “slab pull.”

In time, these plates will converge, pull apart or slide past each other. Those actions cause most earthquakes and volcanoes.

It’s a slow ride, but it makes for exciting times here on Earth’s surface.
