EXPERTS from around the world are making their mark on the ever growing brewing and distilling scene in the North East. Nestled on the rural roads of Bobinawarrah is new gin making business Hurdle Creek Still, run by Simon BrookeTaylor and Wendy Williams. Hailing from Derbyshire, the master brewer with a degree in biochemistry says he has had a passion for brewing for many decades. He met Wendy at Falls Creek, with the two having a mutual love of the snowfields, and their partnership grew from there. They have spent the past few years establishing the newly opened Hurdle Creek Still, and Simon said that given his background, the technical side of distilling really appeals to him. “It’s quite scientific,” he said of the process. “I love gin because of the process and botanicals you use. “The gin boom is coming to the Australian brewing scene.” Wendy said that establishing Hurdle Creek Still had been a labour of love, with the shed housing the business having been reconstructed from a range of upcycled materials, including tin from the old store in Tawonga. The sustainable and self sustaining attitude also stretches to the making of the gin, with some of the equipment used being repurposed dairy vats, and the spirit base for the gin being grain barley that they roll themselves. Botanical ingredients in the gin come from hops that are sourced from the Buckland Valley and even from the garden surrounding Wendy’s grandparents’ house. continued page |

What’s in your garden: We have a mix of natives and deciduous trees planted amongst large granite rocks and river bed stones. Dotted around the garden are quirky pieces of recycled rusted iron. The deep red colour of the iron contrasts well with the green foliage. Oversized urns add a sculptural element to the design. What do you enjoy about gardening:
Shopping for plants or trees for a specific area and seeing them come to maturity. Working outside and just getting my hands dirty I suppose. Favourite plant/spot in your garden: I like sitting under the drooping canopy, it’s quiet and private. The leaves and the change of colour throughout the year adds texture and movement to the garden.
Water saving/ conservation tip: Mulch as much as possible and plant natives. Plus plants do not need as much water as you think they do. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: A little bit often. Do not over plant. And keep aside time for just being in the garden.

SUNDAY, May 8 is Mother’s Day. It is the day to show Mum how special she is and how much she is loved. It is traditionally associated with the giving of fresh flowers as a symbol of thanks and love. It is also the busiest day of the year for florists and a boom time for commercial flower growers. But the flowers don’t have to be purchased from a florist to be special. A bunch picked fresh from the garden and arranged in a vase is just as special. When my children were young; too young to boil the kettle on their own, they used to make me a special Mother’s Day breakfast complete with flowers in a vase. Breakfast was weetbix with hot milk; the milk had hot tap water added but never enough as it was always too dry and gluggy. The two slices of toast were dry and crunchy with a knob of butter in the middle covered in thick layers of vegemite. It was washed down with a warm milo made from the hot tap water and a few too many spoons of sugar. Although they lacked the finer art of cooking in the early years, it was the enthusiasm and finishing touches that

brought a happy tear to my eye. Breakfast was served in bed and was bought in on a breakfast tray. A vase was filled with flowers they had gathered from the garden, artistically arranged and sat on the tray. The tray often had flowers sprinkled on it for added decoration. Handmade Mother’s Day cards were decorated with dried pressed flowers, again from the garden. The presents consisted of another larger bunch of flowers wrapped in tin foil and items bought from the Mother’s Day stall at school. Families sent along donations for the stall and my darlings always bought back what we donated. It was always garden related. I lovingly unwrapped many packets of seeds, garden hand tools, decorated pots, plants, containers and garden books. Very special memories! Happy gardening and happy Mother’s Day to all mums!

To breed or not to breed IT can be tempting to delay desexing dogs in the hope of one day breeding from them – after all, what could be better than miniature versions of a good family dog. Besides, everyone knows letting a bitch have a litter quietens her down - or does it? Deciding whether to breed or not is just the first step down the path to puppy-hood. Other questions you need to consider include: Do I know the health benefits of having my dog desexed? Could I instead purchase a relative of my dog (eg from the breeder) if I would like one with similar traits? How will I know when my bitch is going to come into season: wait and see or do tests? What method of breeding will I use: natural mating or artificial insemination? How will I confirm whether my
bitch is pregnant: wait and see, perform ultrasound or have an X-ray taken? Do I have my bitch on a suitable pregnancy diet? It’s often recommended to feed a good quality puppy food for the final weeks of pregnancy and during lactation. How will I know when my bitch is ready to whelp? Knowing the breeding date alone is often inaccurate, as conception may take place days after mating. Do I have a suitable whelping area? How will I know if something is going wrong with the birth? Am I prepared for an emergency caesarean if there are problems? A caesarean often costs over $1000 but is life-saving. Am I aware of the legal requirements to sell pups? For instance, in Victoria it is

And the pair grow or source from neighbours a number of other ingredients, including growing their own coriander and fennel and harvesting from their peppercorn tree. Spent grain does not go to waste either, being fed to the cattle on the property. The pair said they decided to make gin because they saw a gap in the market, and also because it is a spirit that can be sold straight away without needing to mature. “I love gin, especially the more boutique ones coming on the market,” Wendy said, adding that the spirit had a rich history spanning many centuries. “And being sustainable is very important to me.” Meanwhile, in the cool alpine air of Dinner Plain, Blizzard Brewing Company is also making its name within the local industry, and is Australia’s highest altitude brewery. Founder Mark Hubbard was born and raised in the alpine environment of
Colorado, but has lived in Australia for several decades, and said that living and working in an alpine environment was where he felt most at home. “I love the alpine areas, and I just saw an opportunity here,” he said of establishing Blizzard Brewing, which he runs with the help of his wife and a small team which includes head brewer Alan Sheppard. “Craft brewing and alpine resorts go hand in hand,” he said, noting America’s most popular ski resorts, like Aspen and Vail, boast thriving craft breweries. He said he has “always been drawn to alpine areas” because of the lifestyle, the people, and “alpine culture”. “People in alpine areas have common values,” Mark said. He said he was proud to have become part of the growing craft brewery scene in the North East, saying that local breweries “have a history of doing things collaboratively”. “It’s fantastic to be a part of it,” he said.

Rain will affect fishing RAIN glorious rain…..finally a little bit of H20 has fallen from the sky and revitalised many waterways across the region, as well as providing a much needed drink for the parched landscape. Last week my father and one of his mates went fishing in the lower reaches of the Ovens River. They had a wonderful afternoon landing four Murray cod, two of which were over 70cm long. They also missed a couple of other strikes as the aggressive cod hit their lures but failed to hook up. All of their cod were caught trolling locally made Predator lures. The fact that they were trolling

should give an indication of how far downstream they were. I have had a few reports trickling in from Lake Mulwala, but it does seem to have slowed down a bit for now. I am predicting that the recent rain may well send some dirty water down the free flowing rivers such as the Ovens, Kiewa and King rivers - as a result the safest place to head out if you’re after a cod during the next week or two is probably Lake Mulwala as the dirty water is often diluted by the clear water of the lake.
Downstream of Lake Mulwala would be an even safer bet if you’re after clear water. This recent rainfall will be working wonders on the smaller waterways for a number of reasons. The extra water flows will be enabling trout which have been trapped in their deep holes to swim upstream to spawn, as well as washing an absolute smorgasbord of food into the system for them to all feed on. Most of the trout will be feeling a bit peckish as it has been so dry for so long and I am expecting the trout in the streams to feed like mad for the next couple of weeks.

Is Daniel ready to save Victoria? THERE was plenty of reading after the state budget last week, but I am still not convinced that all the promises will be forthcoming. What a great cash haul for the government with some $60 billion in revenue for the state. State taxes, including an extra $500 million in land tax, will bring in $20 billion this year. But that’s not all - this will swell to $21.6 billion in 2016/2017, including some $2.3 billion in motoring charges. Some pleasing news that I saw was the $169m for redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Hospital, but I could not find very much in the way of funding for Northeast Health Wangaratta. I know the board chairman Brendan Schutt was looking for a modest $22m and I just hope that somewhere in the fine print there is some money for this side of the

Yes, we are going to see a revamp of Royal Melbourne Hospital and there has been $135m committed to build Australia’s first heart hospital, but this is dependent on the government being able to raise the other $200m from private partners. Looking at the surpluses that are being generated, I would believe there will be many willing to put up the funds. The Australian Medical Association praised the
government for its funding of rural health, elective surgery and a $30 million real time prescription monitoring system. They talk about a revolution on the railways - but not in North East Victoria, where I saw the Melbourne to Albury line had only been allocated one new carriage. Some $588m to extend the present railway line from South Morang to Mernda seems a huge amount, given that the old train line is still evident in some places. I do note that regional trains are to get a $1.3 billion cash injection, with 27 VLocity carriages and a revamp of the old fleet with new chairs and air conditioning. I just wonder if I read the full budget papers, I may find something positive about our trains. Again though, it would appear the bulk of funds for rail will be
going Ballarat way with duplication as far as Melton being a big spend. Education would appear to have some goals being kicked, with nine new schools to be built as part of a $924 million school works program. Some $102 million will go toward the purchase of land for another 12 new schools and in addition 47 metropolitan schools and 39 in regional Victoria will be upgraded. I was very interested to read that new high schools would be built in Prahran and Richmond. It is getting close to 65 years since I attended Prahran Tech where I completed my secondary schooling (I think still part of Swinburne University) and I did all my apprenticeship training at Richmond Tech, but it would appear that these must be back to residential arears with young children.
I am sorry though that $63.6 million will be spent to build more portable classrooms for schools already bursting at the seams. Once in place they seem to remain as part of the furniture for ever and a day. While on the subject of education I noted in the fine print that students at up to 100 disadvantaged schools could be connected with doctors up to once a week as part of a $45 million plan. All in all, these should auger well for the government and let’s hope they get on with the job as soon as possible. Regional jobs certainly need boosting and speaking of hospitals and rail passenger services, one would hope that these essential services are funded on a needs basis rather than who is the local member.
