SOUND can tell you a lot about a place – from birdsong, to the echoes of conversation, and the way it reverberates off buildings and natural structures alike. And it is precisely this connection that is explored at the Bogong Centre for Sound Culture. Established by Madelynne Cornish and Dr Phillip Samartzis in 2010, the centre concentrates on investigating the relationship between industry and the natural environment, through projects focusing on acoustic ecology and environmental sustainability. And although Madelynne originally hails from Melbourne, the co-founder, artist and facilitator cannot see herself anywhere else. “I now consider myself a local,” she said, spending more time in the hills than anywhere else. “I can’t think of anything better than spending time facilitating creative opportunities and this is a great place to do it. “Art opens and expands the mind, it can change the way we view the world.” Since its inception, the centre has been home to many artists in residence, walking tours, artist presentations and more, and Madelynne said she has enjoyed not just meeting artists but supportive members of the local community, including Alpine Radio personalities Yvonne and Bill Sutton. “When we first started to develop these initiatives, I thought the artwork may have been too esoteric for a regional audience, but I’m glad to say I was mistaken,” Madelynne said. And recent artist in residence, Kate Hunter, said she feels a closeness to the area, which she is exploring in a piece based on a photo diary her father made during a walk through the High Plains in the mid 1940s. continued page |
