THERE is no hiding the excitement on Lisa McInerney’s sons’ faces when they see their kitchen table laden with treats to make the family’s own version of trifle. But Ms McInerney, who writes her own food blog as well as her work as a chiropractor, knows their excitement will not be followed by a sugar rush. Over the past few years, she has followed her passion for baking, first sparked in her childhood, into a popular blog, “Mummy Made It”, which concentrates on recipes she has adapted to be gluten free, free of dairy and added refined sugar, and paleo friendly. And she is part of growing numbers of local people who are discovering the joys of healthier eating. Ms McInerney has a self-described “obsession” with baking, having enjoyed cooking with her mother and grandmother since childhood, and said she loved to share good food with her family. But it was not until a debilitating bout of glandular fever when she was 18 that she began to explore changes in her diet to aid her recovery. The glandular fever triggered some other health issues, and she discovered she had the coeliac gene. She began cutting gluten from her diet, and her commitment to healthier eating grew from there. “Every day, I started to feel better,” she said. continued page |

YOUR GARDEN
GARDEN HINTS
Symphony of silver and white
Chocolate gardens
Name: Town:
Sandra Williams Beechworth
FRAGRANCE is an important element in gardens. Perfumed plants bring an added dimension to a garden by filling the air with their delightful smells. One of the less common but sense arousing perfumes in the plant world is that of chocolate scented plants. Give your garden that extra wow factor by including plants with a delicious chocolate aroma and some are even edible. Chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) is the ultimate chocolate plant featuring rich chocolate colored blooms and a strong chocolate fragrance. Chocolate cosmos is an herbaceous perennial plant native to Mexico which grows from tubers. Interestingly, it is extinct in the wild and is only grown commercially from division of the tubers. It cannot be grown from seed as it is not self-fertile, and doesn’t produce seeds like other varieties of cosmos. Chocolate cosmos thrives in full sun and the perfume intensifies in the heat of the day and early evenings. The simple daisy like flowers bloom through late spring and summer, reaching up to 60cm tall and make excellent cut flowers. The chocolate mint plant (Mentha piperata) has a minty-chocolate fragrance and taste, just like an after dinner mint.
RELAXING: Sandra Williams in her garden, with her dogs Bentley and Nelson.
What’s in your garden: Out front is a “silver and white garden” to complement the house colors. I have Margaret Merril and Pascali roses, seaside daisies, lambs’ ears, and teucrium hedging. The central tree is a deciduous ornamental pear (Pyrus salicifolia Pendula) which has a silver olive-type leaf and an interesting shape in winter. The back garden has a Japanese influence with coral bark maples, weeping cherries, forest pansy, camellias and azaleas leading down descending pathways to a number of eucalypts surrounding a springfed pond which eventually drains into Lake Sambell.
I also have a few dwarf fruit trees and some raised vegetable and herb garden beds. What do you enjoy about gardening: It provides a time of peace to think and relax together with an appreciation of nature’s awesome powers of regeneration. Favorite plant/spot in your garden: My favorite plant is the smoke bush (cotinus Grace) which is spectacular in summer and autumn. A favorite spot is the little wooden deck which catches the long rays of the setting sun all the way up the pond. It is a beautiful setting
with a myriad of insect and bird life at dusk. Water saving/conservation tip: Save grass clippings and autumn leaf litter to use as mulch. Be watchful. A long slow overnight trickle of water is efficient and works wonders for a stressed tree. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Make sensible choices of plants initially according to the time you have available in your garden. My choice of trees and shrubs and ground covers with a minimal amount of lawn suits my busy lifestyle. Thereafter, just keep on top of the pruning and weeding.
Swenrick BABY & CHILDRENS CLOTHRING
WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST
Like all mints, it is highly invasive so grow it in a container to keep it under control. It is easily propagated by cuttings or runners. Chocolate mint needs little maintenance, apart from an occasional trim and liquid fertilise. It is best grown in full sun for maximum flavor. The flavorsome leaves can be used in drinks, deserts and other gourmet delights. Chocolate mint also has attractive pink flowers in late spring and summer. The chocolate daisy (Berlandiera lyrata) is a Native American wildflower, with yellow flowers, similar to coreopsis and a strong chocolate fragrance. It is drought tolerant and classed as an herb. It tastes as good as it smells and can be used as a garnish or added to salads. It also attracts bees, butterflies and birds to the garden. Introduce some mouth-watering, chocolate flavored aromas to a special part of your garden to fill your senses. Happy gardening!

Grass eating TEMPTING: Ms McInerney’s recipes feature healthy hidden ingredients.
Starting the blog in recent years she discovered she had a knack for converting favorite recipes into healthier treats, from chocolate ice cream made with bananas and few other ingredients, to chocolate cakes made with moist avocado and more. “We always try to get as many veggies into our meals as possible,” Ms McInerney laughed. “I don’t have to worry if my family want a second helping, and for us, it’s normal to eat this way.” One of her highlights was finding a book of her grandmother’s old recipes, and managing to convert one of her traditional Christmas cake recipes to suit her diet. An avid admirer of American kitchen queen Martha Stewart, as well as her fellow bloggers, Ms McInerney said her goal was for her work to be noticed by Ms Stewart, and she hoped to also publish hard copy books of her recipes. She added that her blog has been noticed worldwide, with readers getting in contact with her from as far afield as Germany. Ms McInernery also added that she enjoyed working on the blog to help people with special dietary needs to feel included, especially on special occasions such as Christmas and Easter. “If I can help people feel less isolated, have a tasty meal and feel better about themselves, then that is great,” she said. Kacey Wells, of Wangaratta Wholefoods, said Ms McInerney’s blog was part of a larger push towards

healthier lifestyles within the community. “Many of our customers are interested in gluten free, paleo, vegetarian, vegan and raw food. “These healthier eating options are becoming more and more popular as more people get online and follow bloggers, just like Lisa,” she said. “It is also becoming increasingly easier to access speciality food items and prices are lowering as well, making healthy eating an option for everyone.” She said that changing eating habits for the better need not be a daunting process, but it had a variety of positive changes on people’s lives, such as better sleep quality, increased energy, weight loss, assisted recovery from some common disorders and more. “To be successful at changing your healthy eating habits, don’t starve yourself,” she said. “When your body is deprived of calories and essential nutrients, it’s only going to be a matter of time before you fall off the bandwagon and return to your old habits. Just make better choices. “Look for food that is as close to its natural state as possible, and avoid additives and preservatives as much as possible.” Ms McInerney’s blog, as well as links to her ebooks and various social media accounts, can be found at www.mummymade.it. Coeliac Awareness Week is being held from March 13-20, and more information on being coeliac and other gluten sensitivities is available on www.coeliac.org.au.
“MY dog eats grass, he must be feeling sick, right?” Wrong! There are many old wives’ tales around, such as if their nose is dry they are sick, or that if they eat grass it is to make themselves vomit because they are unwell. Grass or plant eating is very common amongst domestic dogs and studies show that it is perfectly normal behavior. One American clinic surveyed 47 owners and 79 per cent of them reported seeing their dog eat grass. The clinic then collected information regarding the type of grass or plant being eaten, frequency, if they were ill at the time or if the dog was seen to vomit afterwards. The larger survey of 1571 clients showed 68 per cent of dogs ate grass weekly and only nine per cent of those were ill at the time. The dogs that were ill before eating plants or grasses were no more likely to vomit afterwards. There are always some exceptions and in some cases malnourished dogs may eat grass to obtain vegetable matter, others may do it out of boredom or anxiety as a form obsessive behavior. Given many dogs lead a dry food only diet they may also just miss eating vegetable
matter and fill those cravings with grasses. The American study showed no link between the sex of the dog or if they were desexed. The breed did not influence their grass eating habit nor did their diet whether dry, homemade or tinned. One finding that came from the study was that younger dogs were more likely to eat grass and plants however they were less likely to be ill before or vomit afterwards. A separate study showed that cats are less likely to eat plants then dogs. Given that plant or grass eating is normal, common, behavior for our pets please ensure you take care when using fertilisers, pesticides or other garden sprays and baits. Also check that any plants in your garden are non-toxic to your four legged family members. The overall conclusion of studies around the world is that grass eating is a normal behavior of domestic animals and does not always reflect illness or underlying deficiencies. FISHING FOCUS
CATCH OF THE WEEK Name:
Rebecca Smith, Wangaratta
Catch:

Size

Bait:

Location: The Catch:

NICE CATCHES: Eleven year old Broadie Ousley with a magnificent Murray cod he caught in the King River on the weekend, and Sandy Hector with a typical sized King River Murray cod caught on the weekend.
Weather makes it tough going BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA
THE downturn in fishing has continued for most of the past week. However, over the weekend I had a few reports of slightly better Murray cod fishing, so hopefully things are starting to look up. I am blaming the weather - a prolonged period of cooler temperatures after hot summer weather is never a good thing. I was out at the Eldorado Dredge hole and tin mine this week. Both waterways contain half decent populations of small redfin.
It is quite rare to catch a decent sized redfin in either hole, and this week it was even rarer again, as I only caught two small redfin in both holes. I fished the King River with Andrew Schulz early in the week where we were rewarded with just one Murray cod between us. With a sustained period of stable weather forecast over the next week we could see a turnaround in the fishing and I am hoping that by the middle to end of this week the Murray cod fishing should have picked up quite a bit. Now here is a story that will blow your socks off. Well known Wangaratta gentleman John Adamo contacted me during the week to report a strange capture. While fishing downstream of Lake
Mulwala in the Murray River, John landed a large freshwater eel on a bardi grub. I contacted two of Victoria’s most senior fisheries managers and from what they have told me, freshwater eels have been found in that stretch of river once or twice before but it is extremely rare. A couple have turned up in the Goulburn River over the years too, but once again it is extremely rare. Eels exist in the Koonong, where the Murray River becomes estuarine. They do swim upstream into the fresh water but not usually this far. The fact one was caught below Lake Mulwala is a great sign that the fish ladders are working right along the Murray River’s many locks and weirs.

Valentine’s Day is on the horizon VALENTINE’S Day is looming on the horizon, which can bring pressure for many people, no matter whether they are married, in a relationship or single. Whatever relationship category you are in, the key to getting through the day is managing your own expectations. If you are in a relationship, talk with your partner about how you feel, and do not judge the relationship too harshly based on one day out of the year. Meanwhile, if you are single – whether a long term single or more recently so – the trick is to be honest with yourself about how Valentine’s Day makes you feel, and find a way to deal with any negative emotions – whether it be spending time with friends, doing something for someone else, or spoiling
yourself by indulging in one of your passions. Anyone can use the day to celebrate the relationships in their life, and take time to nurture and value them. If you are looking forward to spoiling your significant other on Valentine’s Day, the way to a memorable present is to choose something with thought and care, no matter what the cost. It can be something as going to a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try together, buying them something related to their hobbies or passions or even just splurging on an experience you can share, such as tickets to an anticipated event. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with surprising people with the more traditional Valentine’s Day presents, either.

WINE TALK
IN MY KITCHEN
Morris Wines
Braised pork belly
2010 Shiraz Around $20
WITH ANITA McPHERSON start, as we sloshed the rich, crimson colored liquid into a couple of fishbowl sized glasses. It has a bright, ripe fruit aroma with black cherry and berry, and the bite of black pepper spice against a background of toasty oak. It’s great to drink right now, while enjoying the balance between the fruit and the savory, dry edge. It might be corny to suggest tacos with a drop like this, but in truth, some earnest, beefy goodness with spicy salsa would only be uplifted by it. Those old flicks may not have won academy awards, but I’d nominate the wine for best supporting role. Available at the cellar door or visit www.morriswines.com.au
WITH BRONWYN INGLETON PORK has to be one of my favorite meats and the acidity of the buttermilk dressing complements pork really well. This dish is inspired by a recipe from Ottelenghi. Â You can find this recipe and lots more on www.thebutterfactory.com.au Method 1. Heat your oven to 250 degrees celsius. Place the herbs, olive oil and garlic in a food processor and roughly puree. 2. Lay the pork belly in an oven tray, skin side down, and season lightly with salt and pepper. Rub in the herb mixture evenly over the meat. 3. Turn the belly skin-side up, pat the skin dry with some kitchen paper and sprinkle salt evenly over the skin, not too thick though. 4. Put the tray in the oven to roast for 1 hour. Once some crackling has formed on the skin, turn the oven down to 170 degrees Celsius and pour the white wine into the tray (avoiding the skin) and roast for another hour. If the belly starts turning black, cover with foil. 5. For the final stage, turn the oven down to 110 degrees Celsius and continue
THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Tiger on the loose, 1896 THE talk of the district in 1896 was the whereabouts of the fabled “Tantanoola Tiger, which was supposed to be either a runaway lion, tiger or wolf, and which roamed far across the countryside it seemed, as Tantanoola is in South Australia. The “Tiger was seen on February 4, 1896 by a Mr JB Higgins, while riding from Thoona to Dookie, at a place known as Maloney’s Paddock. He described it as being of a dull brown color, the size of a large Newfoundland dog, and the general shape of a young lioness. Mr Higgins was carrying no weapon with him at the time, and wisely rode on.

LATELY I’ve been really enjoying some of the old Western movies screened late at night on the “classic pay tv channels. They must have churned out hundreds of them in the fifties and sixties, and while they vary between the good, the bad and the really ugly, they are almost always sensational fun. My favorites at the moment are the spaghetti Westerns, which combine the dirtiest looking actors and most violent and dramatic story lines, all accompanied by a spellbinding soundtrack. Sergio Leone was a master filmmaker, and if you enjoy a glass of wine or two while you watch, you’ll hardly notice when the actor’s lips don’t synch with what you’re hearing. In honor of the genre, we thought a Shiraz with substance would be appropriate. The Morris of Rutherglen Shiraz fit the bill right from the

Weight loss and fat phobia
The dangers of a credit card
AS a population we have increased our total fat consumption by over 15 per cent (just about every fat containing product on our supermarket shelves has a ‘no’ or ‘low’ fat version). The irony of this is that the general population has increased its weight by 30 per cent or more! What you may not have heard is that this fat gain can be caused not only by fat, but by sugar and all these ‘low’ or ‘no’ fat products are high in sugar. So we have replaced one fat causing product with another! Our body is very clever, and when we eat breads, cereals, juice, sweets, cakes, cordials, pasta and rice, these foods enter our body to be broken down into sugar and these are stored in our body as fat. When we eat a lot of these foods, our blood sugar levels can swing and we can get a case of ‘3 oclockitis’. This is where you feel tired, light headed, crave sugar and loose concentration, normally at 3pm or after dinner, you may even wake up with ‘3 o’clockitis’. So, if we want to loose weight we need to cut out the fried foods, but also the

sugary foods - the sweets, soft drinks, sugary cereals and white breads. We need to replace these with small amounts of quality proteins and lots of vegetables, some fruit and natural milks, cheese and yoghurts. We still need some fats to keep us feeling full and
to reduce those sugar cravings, but they need to come in the form of olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, fish and natural yoghurts. When tackling weight loss, you should never feel hungry, light headed or that you are craving sugar – this is the key to a successful program.
SO you spent up big in the lead up to Christmas, but how much was in payments by chip technology? One in 15 Australian adults were victims of credit card fraud in the last year, with losses blowing out to $278 million as online shopping boom leads to more Australians being swindled. These losses are up more than 50 per cent compared with the previous year, and have led bank and card issuers, such as Mastercard and Visa, scrambling to keep ahead of fraud, particularly as more payments move online and offshore. I wonder how many of you with access to your credit card transactions online regularly check entries rather than wait for the statement. Let me assure you that you should check all entries that will appear on the statement. I was compromised myself a couple of years ago with transactions taking place in the USA, but as I rang the bank immediately and verified I was in Australia, the transactions were reversed. Australians are among the most prolific card users, with more than 152 million card transactions a month, according to Reserve Bank figures. Despite the increase in losses, banks insist there will be no watering down of their commitment to repay fraud victims. “When fraud does occur, customers can be assured that they are not liable for losses from unauthorised transactions where it is clear that the user has not contributed to the loss,” said the chief executive of the Australian Bankers Association, Steven Munchenberg. But a word of warning with pay wave cards - if you lose the card and have not advised the bank, you will probably be liable for the transaction. Some 1.1 million cases of fraud for credit cards and credit-style cards such as Visa Debit occurred over the past year. This translates to 96 cents for every $1000 spent with cards, up from 67.2 cents in the previous year and averages $250 for each fraudulent transaction. But the biggest thing to show up is that

some 71 per cent of fraud cases involve “card not present” transactions – in which the cardholder and retailer do not meet face to face, such as online or over the phone, so it is still a big risk to do your transactions without being present. Elsewhere, intensive efforts by banks to stamp out “skimming” of debit cards at EFTPOS terminals and ATMs have had some success. Much of the falls are attributed to the use of chip technology on debit cards, but we are still using more and more online technology for our banking, and this can be fraught with danger. Identity theft is one of the big issues we face, which is where your personal details are obtained to get some sort of financial or other benefit, leaving you the owner of that identity often with a large debt, negative credit rating and in some cases legal implications. Your information can be obtained in many ways, including theft from your mailbox at home, by going through your garbage bins, the internet and telephone and facsimile scams. Fraudsters can assume your identity by collecting old electricity, water, telephone or rate notices which show your address, and all they need then is your date of birth and away they go. Then we have cheque fraud, although this has diminished considerably with the use of BPAY and Electronic Funds Transfers. But it is still cheque fraud if the payee/amount are altered without authority, using false invoices to get legitimate cheques, depositing a cheque into a third party account without authority or depositing a cheque for payment knowing that insufficient funds are (or will be) in the account to cover the deposited cheque. So please start doing regular checks to ensure you don’t become another statistic.
