HAD it not been for the lifesaving actions of strangers, Renee Garoni might not be here today.

Since birth, the Wangaratta resident has lived with the genetic condition of alpha-1 antitripsin protein deficiency, which, in her case, affects her liver.

At just 10 years old, with her health declining, she was the recipient of a lifesaving liver transplant.

Health problems cropped up again a few years ago, when Renee, now a mother of three and wife to husband Phil, became very ill, with her donor liver deteriorating rapidly.

Rushed to Melbourne’s Austin Hospital, she received a new liver transplant and fought her way back to good health.

Renee said that she was determined to recover for her family, thinking of her children and saying “I didn’t want them to grow up without me”.

The experience underlined the importance of organ donation, as well as blood donations, to the family, Renee also having received blood transfusions several times in her life.

For eldest daughter Nina-Maree Cowton, a young teenager at the time, the experience affirmed her resolve to give back to the community and has made her passionate about blood and organ donation.

Now in her final year at Galen Catholic College, she combines her hectic study load with regular blood donations at the Wangaratta Blood Donor Centre.

Her experiences have also made her determined to help other people by carving out a career in the health industry.

“I can help not only people who are sick, but their families as well,” she said.

DOUBLE HELIX: Your protein-coding genes may not be the whole story of what makes you who you are.

Your DNA is in the dumpster in our appearance, but in our relative cognitive abilities?

The answer may just lie in what Dr Francis Crick, codiscoverer of the double helix structure of DNA, labelled as ‘Junk DNA’ in 1970.

At the time, this junk DNA appeared to hold no apparent purpose as it was non-coding (meaning that it did not code proteins and thus did not hold information pertinent to our structure as an organism).

But considering that this junk comprises roughly 97 per cent of our genetic structure, scientists have long speculated that, far from being useless, this junk yard of random DNA might just hold the key to the question of why we are human, and why a giraffe is a giraffe.

This comes as no great surprise to evolutionary biologists, most of whom have long maintained that one hundred thousand protein coding genes would prove to be so complex as to be fatal for an organism, simply because the chances of offspring suffering extensive and life threatening mutations would be excessively high.

The jury is out for the time being as there is still much work to be done, but it would seem that geneticists will be up to their elbows sifting through the DNA equivalent of a rubbish dump for the foreseeable future.

But as they say, ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ They may be more right than they ever knew.

So how can you tell when the soil is dry enough to work?

Grab a handful of soil, squeeze it into a ball and then open your fingers.

If soil crumbles through your fingers when squeezed, it is ready to work.

If the ball shape remains, it is still too wet.

Or dig a shovel into the soil and pull it out.

If the shovel is covered with sticky muddy soil, it is still too wet and needs to dry out more.

When it is ready to be worked, dig in plenty of organic matter, compost and animal manure to improve the soils structure, tilth, drainage and health.

YOU are a chimpanzee.

Well, you’re almost a chimpanzee.

In fact, you’re genome is ninety eight point five percent identical to that of a chimpanzee’s.

This means one of two things.

Either someone should call the local wildlife authorities and have you placed in an animal enclosure, or genetics is a really weird and baffling branch of science.

Fortunately for you, it’s the latter.

And the more scientists learn about our genome, the more weird and baffling things become.

Prior to the human genome being mapped in 2001, it was estimated that our genome should contain in the vicinity of one hundred thousand genes (protein coding DNA), but the teams responsible for the mapping clocked the total at roughly thirty thousand genes.

And now geneticists have discovered that the total is closer to twenty thousand.

To put that in perspective, a microscopic worm consisting of just one thousand cells holds a gene count similar to our own.

Given the massive disparity between the complexity of an organism such as ourselves, and that of a microscopic worm, it begs the question as to how such a thing is possible.

Furthermore, given that our genome is so close to that of a chimp, why are we so biologically different, not just

It’s said that rain is good for the garden, but too much can lead to problems.

After the ground soaking rains that we’ve had over the past few weeks, enough is enough.

Soils have reached maximum water capacity and in many areas are saturated.

They become waterlogged, soggy, sticky and slippery.

Soil type plays a part in how well it drains, but with so much rain, even faster draining sandy soils are struggling.

Heavy rain has an effect on soil structure by compacting the soil surface.

Excessive rainfall also washes out valuable nutrients.

But the problem can be made worse by trying to “work� wet soil.

It is tempting to start preparing beds for spring planting by digging over or tilling.

Unfortunately, working soils which are still too wet tends to break down the soil structure.

It packs soil particles more tightly together, reducing spaces for air and water to penetrate.

This compaction also makes it difficult for plant roots to spread and grow through the soil.

In addition to making it difficult for plants to grow, compacted soils also tend to drain more slowly, leading to problems of wet feet and death by drowning.

Help for our wildlife AS vets, we constantly see wildlife brought into the clinic either injured or sick.

Many of these require humane euthanasia.

We have great wildlife carers who will rehabilitate animals if this is possible, and they aim for the end result of returning the animal to the wild.

Keeping wildlife captive without an appropriate licence is illegal.

If you do come across an injured or sick animal it needs to be taken to a carer or vet ASAP. Keeping these animals at home for days trying to help them can often make things much worse for them.

If you see or hit an adult marsupial be sure to check its pouch for any young.

Try to keep the animal warm, secure and quiet until you can get the animal to a carer or vet, don’t allow children or other animals near it as this will cause significant stress.

A towel, jumper and a cardboard box are often all you need to transport small animals.

Do not try to feed the animal.

It is not a bad idea to carry a small rescue kit in the car in case you come across wildlife on your travels, this can include gloves, towels, a pillow case, torch, and maybe a small cardboard box.

“People don’t realise, but giving blood often saves a life,� said Renee.

Nina-Maree agrees, noting the Red Cross had indicated that blood she had donated had saved a life at the Austin Hospital.

Wangaratta and North East residents who donate blood will be asked to consider registering to become an organ and tissue donor, as DonateLife Victoria and the Wangaratta Blood Donor Centre team up during DonateLife Week (July 31 – August 7).

This week and next, blood donors will be given an Australian Organ Donor Registration form at their blood donation appointment, along with their regular blood donation paperwork. “Registering your donation decisions and talking to your family is the best action you can take to help sick Australians waiting for their second chance at life,� said Wangaratta nurse donation specialist, Catherine Chanter. “Many people are unaware that just one per cent of patients who die in hospitals may be eligible to become organ donors (tissue donation is less limited and can be retrieved up to 24 hours after death). “Donation is precious and it is rare. “To ensure every potential donor has the chance to transform lives, we need Victorians to register their donation decisions and to let their loved ones know.�

With many locals regularly giving blood, Blood Service regional communications manager Erin Lagoudakis said considering organ donation is a logical next step. “Our Wangaratta donors are already known for their giving spirit, so asking them to consider registering their organ and tissue donation decision during DonateLife Week 2016 is an extension of the idea of helping others,� she said.

A major scientific study authored by researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of Warwick has revealed eating fruit and vegetables not only reduces risk of cancer and heart attacks, but also increases happiness levels with each extra portion consumed.

Whisk thoroughly until yolk and white are mixed and frothy.

Grease the inside of each muffin hole.

Line the base of each muffin hole with pressed linseed meal.

Mix all the chopped vegetables, garlic, dill and chilli flakes together in a separate bowl.

Spoon out the mixture evenly into the 12 muffin holes.

Beechworth gold strike, 1852 BY 1852, the North East of Victoria was in the grip of gold fever.

David Reid, who had arrived in the North East in 1838 at 18 and had settled first in Wangaratta and then Wooragee, saw the discovery of gold at Beechworth firsthand after he equipped two prospectors and sent

them off with one of his shepherds as a guide.

August 3, 1852, was the date of the first strike of gold for this party, in a shallow hole at Spring Creek near the present site of Beechworth, and this discovery seems to have been the catalyst for the Beechworth goldrush.

INGREDIENTS

MY interest in food, wine and cooking has definitely been influenced by my mother, but I’m not sure that’s an entirely positive thing.

While I make a great pumpkin and sweet potato soup exactly the way she taught me, mum was never a prolific or particularly enthusiastic cook, except for the occasional dinner party.

She still apologises for not making traditional roast dinners and for never having baked us a single cake or biscuit, but it’s probably the “vegemite chicken” she should really be sorry for.

Our oven never got much use but the wine fridge certainly did, and she was a master at suggesting where to go for dinner or taking any available shortcut when entertaining at home.

So I think she’d approve of serving Schmidt’s Strawberry Liqueur and a few glasses for dessert.

To have or not have private health insurance?

I AM wondering how many of you picked up the part of the budget which will have implications for a great many of you in regard to the Medicare levy surcharge.

Due to a sneaky ploy by the government in the 2016 Budget, the threshold at which single income earners are required to pay the Medicare levy surcharge will remain at $90,000 for single taxpayers until June 2021.

When the levy was first introduced it targeted high income earners and was indexed to average weekly ordinary time earnings.

This was changed in the first Hockey/Abbott budget where indexation was paused until June 2018.

But the 2016 Budget has extended this freeze for another three years, with a saving of about $370 million on the forward estimates.

kenclarke11@bigpond.com The average fulltime earnings in 2014/2015 was about $77,000, so an income of $90,000 is about 17 per cent higher.

With the 2016 Budget predicting wages growth of 2.75 per cent, $90,000 will be about the average fulltime income by 2020/2021.

Ian McAuley, a Fellow at the Centre for Policy Development, highlighted the freeze in a paper on private health insurance and public policy he was presenting at the 2016 Health Insurance Summit last week.

He believes the idea of directly funding private hospitals alongside

the public system would be much more efficient than giving public subsidies to private health insurers.

He argues the freeze in the threshold for private health rebates and the Medicare levy surcharge takes the cost of subsidising the insurance sector off the budget and into the “dark world of hidden subsidies”.

His argument - and I can see the logic of exempting private health fund members from the Medicare levy surcharge - is a form of subsidy for the industry.

At the present time the government is paying $6.5 billion in direct outlays for the rebate and $1.6 billion in “tax expenditures” (because the rebate does not count as taxable income).

So what does the freeze in the threshold mean to you and I? As more reach the frozen threshold, the government will

be paying less for the rebate, thus putting more pressure on the individual to buy private health insurance.

Of course, those who are 31 years or older and who have not previously had private health insurance will also be hit with an additional two per cent loading for each year over the age of 31.

For example, a person who waits until they are 40 years old could pay an extra 20 per cent on the cost of their hospital cover.

If they wait until they are 50 then the cost will be 40 per cent higher.

Reference to the Australian Taxation Office site says: “Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) is designed to encourage people to purchase and maintain hospital cover earlier in life. LHC loading is a penalty that generally applies when a person has not taken out and maintained private health insurance from the

day they turn 31.”

To avoid incurring an LHC loading, residents of Australia must ensure they hold an appropriate level of private patient hospital cover before they reach their LHC base day.

And the other thing worth noting as you get toward the $90,000 income threshold (single) is that many other things can impact on your taxable income – such as fringe benefits, reportable employer superannuation contributions, net rental property losses and deductible superannuation contributions are all added back to arrive at your taxable income.

My advice if you are turning 30 this year is to talk to your accountant about the options, as in some cases the cost of paying the surcharge could be less than the private health cover premiums that you need to pay but the choice is yours.
