Faith without borders

By KYLIE WILSON FROM working with orphans in the Philippines, to spending time with the elderly in and around Wangaratta, Fr Dean Bongat, currently assistant parish priest at Wangaratta’s Catholic parishes, has fit a lot into his life.

Originally hailing from the Philippines, his mother died when he was five, and his father arranged for him to be raised by his aunt.

Fr Bongat remembers that he first realised he wanted to enter the priesthood when he was in year nine, and a priest visited the school as part of a lesson on vocations.

He said that although his aunt - who gave him some of his early lessons in faith by teaching him to pray the rosary - could not support him, he became determined to go to seminary and become a priest.

Not being able to complete seminary at first, but determined to help people, he studied psychology, utilising his new skills to help orphans with special needs at an orphanage in Manila, as well as being a university lecturer and working as a guidance counsellor.

Environmental enrichment for indoor cats INDOOR cats require adequate stimulation to ensure they remain happy and healthy. It is important to think about whether you have this in place in your home.

Inadequate stimulation can lead to stressed cats, and this stress may manifest in behaviours such as inappropriate toileting, excessive vocalisation and over/undergrooming.

Having a stimulating and clean environment can prevent many of these behaviours, things to consider when you have an indoor only cat: Litter trays: Generally, cats preferred non-scented, ďŹ ne, sand-like litter, private and away from food. However, this can vary from cat to cat so you may need to trial different litter tray locations and litter types to ďŹ nd out what your cat prefers. Litter trays should be 1.5 times the size of the cat and the general rule of thumb for the number of litter trays is 1 per cat in the household plus 1.

Games/social interaction: Cats should have access to a range of toys to keep them entertained. Some rewarding toys include ďŹ shing rods, moving rats or even aluminium foil

balls. Rotate the toys to keep them interested.

Scratching/climbing posts: Indoor cats should have access to a scratching post as well as a place to hide or climb. Scratching poles should be 1.5 times the size of the cat and close to their sleeping space.

Sensory stimulation: Different scents, smells, sounds and textures can help enrich their environment.

Feeding: Make feedtime a challenge using a tower feeder or egg carton, feeders should be located away from litter trays.

Access to outdoor space: Indoor cats should ideally have access to an enclosed outdoor space like a cat run or pen. Cats can even be trained to walk on a lead with a harness!

â—† DIG DEEP: Make sure you dig a sufficiently large hole when planting your bare rooted trees.

Sleeping beauties - bare rooted trees MANY ornamental and fruit trees are dormant in winter.

This means they can be easily uprooted, moved and replanted whilst they are effectively sleeping.

They are called ‘bare rooted’ because the soil is removed from the root mass and they are transported, instead, in a bag of well drained material such as sawdust.

Buying a bare rooted plant in winter is an easy and economical way of adding a tree to your garden.

Costs are saved because there is no pot, no soil or potting mix.

Labour and transport costs are reduced compared to bulky potted plants.

Planting out is an easy process, provided you follow a few simple tips:

Prepare the planting hole in advance Dig a hole at least twice the width and depth of the root ball.

Add a few handfuls of organic matter such as compost and mix with the loose soil. Mound the soil in the hole so that the tree will sit at its natural level with the soil surface.

Any graft unions need to sit above the soil level. BackďŹ ll the hole and ďŹ rm down the soil around the trunk.

Water, water, water A bare rooted tree can be kept for several weeks in its bag of sawdust, provided the roots are kept moist. On the day of planting, remove it from the bag and soak the roots it in a bucket of water. Once the tree is planted and the hole ďŹ lled with soil, give it a good soak.

Prune for balance and shape When they were harvested from

the grower, the tree roots would have been signiďŹ cantly cut back.

To balance the tree, the shoots should also be pruned immediately after planting.

It is ďŹ ne to cut back 50 per cent or more of the top growth.

As the soil warms in spring, this will allow the developing root mass to support new growth without becoming too stressed.

For stone fruit trees, pruning is often done to create a vase shape.

For apples, pears and many ornamental trees, there is usually a central leader with the overall shape narrowing towards the top.

Following these tips should reward you with a growth spurt once the sap starts to ow again in spring, so why not get your warm winter gear and boots on and plant a bare rooted beauty this weekend.

Chrismont Wines 2018 La Zona Pinot Grigio IT was time for the gloves, scarf and beanie to make an appearance this week, with early morning frosts making it look like the paddocks around the house were actually covered with snow.

As hard as it was for us to emerge from under the doona, it seems it was just as hard for the dogs who have decided to sleep in, staying curled up on their beds with noses tucked under their paws.

During this time he was also the Philippines representative to the World Federation of United Nations Associations.

But through it all, he remained determined to stay true to his calling - to attend seminary and become a priest.

In 2010 he went back to the seminary, this time in the Lorenzo Mission Institute in the Philippines, where he completed his degree in philosophy and started a degree in theology.

Then, he found a calling card from the Australian diocese in Parramatta, and said that gave him the idea to follow his faith to Australia.

He wrote to several different diocese before ap-

plying for and being accepted as a student for the Diocese of Sandhurst living in Melbourne and studying at Catholic Theological College.

Dean was ordained a deacon on November 25, 2017 at Muntinlupa in the Philippines and ordained a priest on September 15, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo.

Fr Bongat said he was the first Filipino to be ordained as a priest at Bendigo.

Through it all, he said his faith has been a constant in his life, and he said his extra studies in psychology have all been in service of his ultimate goal of being a caring and effective priest.

“I want to be effective in my ministry,” he said.

Fundraiser

Now settled into his role in Wangaratta, he said that there are several contrasts between the Australian and Filipino cultures, but that he could be of different kinds of service in either culture.

In Wangaratta, he said that although sharing his faith with younger parishioners could be more difficult than in the Philippines, he was often fulfilled by being able to visit with and provide comfort to many older members of the community.

But while at times he might find his work confronting, Fr Bongat said his faith always pulls him through.

“Everything is a grace from God,” he said.

“I want to make a difference in my own little ways.”

Two in five Aussies plan to change jobs this financial year RESEARCH from recruitment ďŹ rm Hays has revealed that 40 per cent of Australians plan to look for a new job in the next 12 months.

According to data from the recruiterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2019/20 Hays Salary Guide, another 28 per cent of the 1600 professionals surveyed said they may look but were â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;unsureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at the time of enquiry.

The reasons?

A lack of promotional opportunities tops the list, cited by 53 per cent, followed by a lack of new challenges (42 per cent) an uncompetitive salary (41 per cent), poor training and development (27 per cent) and poor work-life balance (also 27 per cent).

Moreover, Hays found that only 44 per cent are â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;very satisďŹ edâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;extremely satisďŹ edâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in their current job.

Just 47 per cent and 54 per cent are â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;very satisďŹ edâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;extremely satisďŹ edâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with their current employer and direct manager respectively.

Activities for whole family SCHOOL holidays are now in full swing across the North East’s alpine resorts, and cold conditions have made for excellent conditions on local mountains.

This week at Falls Creek will see the Junior Agility Race take place on the NASTAR Racecourse this Saturday, which focuses on young athletes being able to move through a variety of different gate formats and terrain changes, and is open to skiers and snowboarders aged 6-16.

Saturday will also see Fast and Female Falls Creek take place, which is designed to empower women to stick with snowsport and continue a healthy lifestyle, while having plenty of fun on the snow.

Meanwhile, at Mt Hotham, the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre at the Big D is sure to entertain the kids until July 17.

Over at Mt Buller, there is the 2019 Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day this Friday, designed to raise money for Mansfield schools, and July 7 will see the Giant Slalom Race 1 in the 2019 Snowracer series.

Mt Buffalo has sight seeing snow, with other activities dependent on snow coverage as winter goes on, and among the recommended sights at the moment is walking up the Monolith to view the frozen glory of Lake Catani.

Miraculous materials “SMART” substances can change their shape according to the influence of external conditions, changing from a gaseous state to a hard metal or even freezing at a high temperature.

This week, I thought we’d take a look at the properties of some of these miraculous materials.

There are quite a few, so I expect I’ll cover more in a future article.

Aerogel: The lightest solid known to humanity This remarkable gel is the world’s lightest solid.

Since its invention in 1931 by American scientist Samuel Kistler, it has been used in space missions to collect dust from a comet’s tail, by government agencies for developing insulated tents, and even for manufacturing clothing that protects a person from extreme heat.

NASA has nicknamed it “Blue Smoke” because it kind of looks like a hologram.

What makes this substance so cool lies in its seemingly paradoxical properties.

This hard gel is mostly air and therefore extremely lightweight, not unlike a sponge.

But it is also very good at repelling heat. As you can see in the image above, it can protect a flower from a strong flame.

The individual molecules that make

up aerogel can also act like mini baseball gloves — they can capture fastmoving particles without damaging them.

This was really useful during NASA’s Stardust mission.

Scientists fashioned silica-based aerogel onto a massive tennis-racketshaped collector that sat outside its Stardust spacecraft.

Its purpose was to capture fragile particle fragments trailing behind the Comet Wild 2 without damaging them.

Because aerogel is strong and relatively transparent, scientists were then able to easily find and extract the particles later for analysis.

Gallium: The metal that melts at room temperature This soft, shimmering solid metal is quite unusual.

At low temperatures, it exists as a brittle, hard structure.

But when warmed to just above room temperature, it melts into a shiny puddle.

By far its main use has been in the manufacture of smartphones and aerospace and telecommunications industries.

While this chemical element exists in the periodic table, it doesn’t occur in nature all that much.

Trace amounts can be found in zinc

ores and bauxite, which is the main source of aluminium.

When in a liquid state melted, Gallium appears reminiscent of the T-1000 Terminator played by Robert Patrick in the iconic film ‘Terminator 2’.

Diamond Nanothreads: Possible basis for a space elevator?

This new manmade fibre composed of carbon atoms arranged into a zigzagging structure reminiscent of that of a diamond’s may be the strongest, stiffest nanomaterial ever made.

Discovered in 2014, its strength appears to surpass that of carbon nanotubes, which is another ultra-strong and lightweight material.

Shockingly, it is also extremely thin.

It measures only three atoms across and is much thinner than a strand of hair.

Researchers are working out how many ways humanity can use diamond nanothread (DNT), but claim that it could be used to make electronics, construction materials, and even clothing. it’s possible that diamond nanothreads could even theoretically be strong, yet light enough, to build an elevator to space.

Other candidates, such as steel, would eventually break under their own weight if stretched long enough.
