FROM policemen on the beat to people on the street, people across the North East are constantly performing random acts of kindness to help others, in the form of blood donations. And with World Blood Donor Day on June 14, and winter closing in, that generosity is needed more than ever. Rob Anderson will be doing his bit to answer the call, having recently made his 50th donation at the Wangaratta Red Cross donor centre. The Tarrawingee resident began donating blood in his twenties as a way to not only help others, but monitor his own health. In recent times he has become a frequent donor of plasma, which can be used for a wide range of medical purposes. Rob said people close to him have gone through breast cancer and needed blood products, and this has helped cement his commitment as donor. “It saves lives, and potentially can save lives immediately,” he said. Rob said many of his colleagues at the Department of Justice are also regular blood donors. And he said blood donation was another way he could help the community, admitting he enjoys the ritual of interacting with donor centre staff and other donors when he goes in to give blood. “I have a good interaction with staff, they get to know you over the years,” he said. continued page |

GARDEN edges and borders play an important role in the garden. Garden edging is used to define boundaries between garden beds, paths, lawns and other landscaping elements. The edging, as well as being attractive, also has practical aspects aiding in the maintenance of the garden. Garden edging can be used as a barrier to keep lawn grass from growing into adjoining garden beds and garden plants from spreading onto the lawn. The edging helps prevent soil and mulches used in the garden from spilling out onto paths, paved areas and lawns. Garden edging also helps keep loose materials like pebbles, sand and gravel, often used in paths, in place. Depending on the type, edging can be laid as a mowing strip. And from an aesthetic view, edges can be used to direct people and the eye down pathways and through the garden. A garden edge can be as simple as a v-shaped trench dug with a spade, a row of plants or constructed from a variety of landscaping materials. Bricks are one of the most commonly used edging, used for many decades because they are relatively cheap and readily available. Bricks can be laid flat, edge to

edge, or laid more traditionally on a diagonal angle of 45 degrees. The bricks can be cemented in place or simply dug into the soil. Another option is to cement bricks a few courses high along the garden edge. Pavers and concrete blocks can be used in a similar fashion. Cast concrete edging is usually done by professionals and perfect for creating curved edges that wind through the garden. It is also suitable for sloping and uneven ground, although can be costly. For a more natural look, logs, sleepers and rocks of varying shapes and colours can be used to create informal garden edges. Wooden edges will break down gradually over time and may eventually need replacing. Garden edging is also available in durable plastic and aluminium. Both bend easily, suitable for smooth curves and are easy to install. The plastic edging comes in a range of colours. Happy gardening.

What’s that lump? OUR pets can develop a multitude of lumps on their bodies over various times in their life. Some are benign and innocuous whereas others are very serious and possibly life threatening. The one thing that they all have in common is that they should be checked out by your vet to make sure they aren’t a risk to your pet’s health. Your vet will examine the lump and look at its size, position, colour and rate of growth. In many cases a simple examination and discussion about the lump will allow a diagnosis. However, if things are still unclear after a physical examination and history collection the next step is a biopsy of the lump to look at its contents under the microscope. Initial biopsies are usually by a fine needle aspirate which can be performed without any need for sedation. This method of biopsy is simple, cheap and nearly pain free. It allows us to look at the cells recovered from the lump under the microscope to try and determine what type of lump we are dealing with. In many cases we can give you an on the spot answer to what type of lump your pet has.

He began donating last year as part of the Red Cross Emergency Services Challenge which sees emergency services personnel compete to see who can donate the most blood - and has not looked back since. He said being present at the scene of emergencies through his job, and seeing members of his family go through major surgery, had made him very aware of the importance of donating blood. “It’s something I’m very passionate about,” Act Sgt Carroll said. “It’s crucial, it saves lives. “It’s very easy to do…I’d recommend anyone to do it.” Act Sgt Carroll has sought to recruit more donors, particularly among the emergency services, and Wangaratta CFA firefighter Jon Henry is keen to get involved. Local blood service spokesperson Shae Smith said that blood products are vital to
In some cases, however, the microscope slide will need to be sent away to a pathologist for a more specialised examination. Occasionally certain types of lumps do not yield their cells very easily by this simple technique and a surgical biopsy or removal of the whole lump and submission for analysis to a pathologist may be necessary instead. At the end of the day all lumps should be checked out for peace of mind and to avoid the situation where we wish we had have seen the lump weeks or months before to begin treatment. Of particular importance is any lump that has arisen suddenly, is growing quickly or has developed an ulcerated surface. If your pet has any lumps that you haven’t had examined it is a great idea to get them in for a check. Your vet can give them a full checkup at the same time and make sure they are doing well. GET OUT WITH THE KIDS: Winter 2014, catching carp in Colombo Creek near Urana, was one of my favourite winter fishing destinations with my two girls. Wherever you go fishing this winter, don’t forget to take the kids along and build some magic memories.
Fewer options, but still fish to catch WELCOME to winter, where fishing choices become a bit more limited and the work of a fishing reporter becomes quite a challenge. For this reason, as with the last two winters I will be disappearing off the radar for the next few months as my weekly reports tend to become somewhat repetitive during the winter months. On Monday this week the Victorian freshwater crayfishing season opened, with local rivers to remain that way until the end of August. There is a minimum size limit of 10cm (carapace length) and a maximum size limit of 12cm with a bag limit of two per

Please remember, these lakes are stocked for the kids to enjoy on their school holidays so please be mindful of the kids before filling your esky. It’s a big, bold drop with a deep, dark crimson colour and a bouquet laced with berry fruit, punchy spice and cedary oak. The flavour is equally formidable, with blackberry fruit and cedar and bay spice, rising from the wine’s earthy texture. It may deserve an aged rib eye to make a match made in heaven, but at least you’d be halfway there. Rocky Mountain extended success, 1880 A TRIUMPH of perseverance by miners and shareholders alike, June 3, 1880 saw the final stages of the opening of one of the greatest feats of engineering undertaken in Victoria during the 19th century, the construction of a tunnel under Beechworth. The tunnel was designed to help tap the gold from the rich land today covered by
the waters of Lake Sambell, and work began on the tunnel in May 1876. On June 3, 1880, company directors took a 25 minute walk through the half mile long tunnel, inspecting the sluice boxes that had been constructed along its entire length, and emerged at the Albert Road end of the tunnel in time for the official turn on of the water at 3.30pm.

THIS is the time for good oldfashioned puddings and one of my favourites is a bread and butter pudding. When I was a kid on the farm it was normal to have a pudding after dinner. Farm work is very physical work, and Dad was always hungry, we all looked forward to the dessert. Method Combine sultanas and brandy in a small bowl and set aside to cool. Combine eggs, cream, milk, castor sugar, orange rind and cinnamon in a jug. Whisk vigorously to combine, set aside. Spread both sides of the bread with butter and halve lengthways. Scatter half the brandied sultanas in a greased one litre oven proof dish. Trim the bread to fit dish and layer, scattering the remaining brandied sultanas between each layer. Pour egg, cream mixture evenly over

bread slices and stand until liquid has been absorbed, about one hour. Preheat oven to 180C. Scatter demerara sugar over pudding and bake until golden brown and custard is firm (30 to 40 minutes). Serve immediately or at room temperature, lightly dusted with icing sugar, with ice cream or cream.

THE Kimberley is a part of the world every Australian should see in their lifetime. There are no words to describe how spectacular the landscape is, but it was the memory of staying at a remote cattle station and feasting on a freshly slaughtered steer which recently came to mind. There is no doubt they breed them tough out there, and as kind and generous as our hosts were, the beef was like chewing on a stockman’s saddle. It was washed down with bottles of inconsequential red and you probably could have showered in it, because it didn’t seem to be as precious to them as fresh water was. Has the new solar energy revolution arrived? A LITTLE over a decade ago Australian households commenced installation of solar panels - hailed as the saving of our electricity supplies. Those who got in early were offered incentives by state governments, and Victoria was the leader with incentives of up to 66 cents for every kilowatt of electricity they put into the grid and in some cases they will continue to receive this subsidy until 2024. No doubt the government had good intentions as it acted vigorously against climate change, and of course consumers flocked to take advantage of these offers. But the government got caught as so many consumers took up the offer. Feed-in tariffs needed to be paid for and the businesses that run the electricity networks were allowed

Today’s figure is more than 1.4 million (one in six households) so it is no wonder governments are concerned. Essentially, all the government did was to arrange things so that money was paid by those without solar systems to those who had
been bold and installed solar. In 2028, when premium feed-in tariffs end, Australian’s without solar will have paid something like $5 billion extra on their electricity bills. And then they have paid a further $5 billion as a result of federal government subsidies to solar from renewable energy targets. When you add a third subsidy that is embedded in the structure of network tariffs, then people without solar have spent $14 billion subsidising those with solar. Yet change is on the way, probably not affordable for the majority of home owners at present, but give it a couple of years and if managed properly, solar PV will finally become a major player in Australia’s power system. In concert with home batteries (which are quite expensive at the
moment), solar panels will change people’s relationship with the grid, enabling consumers to store and manage the electricity their solar panels produce, thereby reducing their electricity costs. These changes will benefit not only those with solar PV but everyone. Battery owners will use the grid less at peak times, placing less strain on the network and reducing the need for costly investment in infrastructure. Reducing network costs will push down the price of electricity. For those of us living in rural and remote areas, even though the batteries are probably in the range of $10,000 to $15,000 to make it worthwhile, some people would do better to go off grid in areas where the cost of supplying electricity
through poles and wires is very high. According to research when batteries are much cheaper, entire communities will be able to disconnect from the grid, becoming self-sufficient in using their own low emissions electricity. Big challenges lie ahead, especially for electricity businesses, which will have to adapt to the coming revolution. Let’s hope the technology of making and supplying home batteries will go ahead very quickly. And this brings me to a very interesting observation. If the Victorian Government is serious about reform, then why can’t they shut down Hazelwood power station which is the world’s third largest polluter in terms of power stations?
