Helping little people handle big emotions By SIMONE KERWIN

KYLIE Mort’s passion for helping young people draw the most from their educational journey has seen her evolve from teacher to author. Originally from Tolmie and now a Benalla resident who travels often to Wangaratta where children Kenzie and Darcy attend Cathedral College, Kylie moved from teaching to tutoring in 2009 as she felt she could help empower more young people with the skills to tackle school. In tandem with her tutoring, she began studying psychology part-time, and found that the two meshed beautifully. Through her psychology research, Kylie learnt more about strategies often used to assist those with conditions like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) in coping with anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed, and to help regulate emotions. She realised these strategies could be employed not only for those with ADHD, but for all children, and decided the information she’d gathered could be best delivered to parents and children through a picture book.
