FROM the Robin Hood tales of yesteryear, to modern day heroes like Katniss Everdeen, Hawkeye and Green Arrow, the skill of archers fascinates many. People from across the region with a desire to hone their skills in this exacting sport often find themselves at the shooting range of Wangaratta Archers at Wangaratta Airport. The group has members ranging in age from six years to 72 years, ranging in experience from the humble beginner, through to the likes of Corowa’s Paul Gardner, who has been involved with the sport for around 40 years. He first tried archery at 12, but didn’t get into the sport until years later when he was drawn to visit a range he would pass every day on his way to work in Brisbane. “I’ve been shooting pretty solidly ever since,” Paul said, who spent much of his time as a member at the Canberra Archery Club. “It’s a great sport, an individual sport and a family sport.” Paul said the sport not only teaches people how to focus, but also has physical benefits including increasing shoulder strength and improving posture. He loves the focus it gives him. “The biggest thing in archery is to concentrate on the goal you’re aiming at,” Paul said. “You have got to have a lot of stamina to shoot too.” In fact, with an average bow you are pulling back up to 50 pounds of pressure. Paul’s commitment to the sport has even seen him encourage wife Janet WillettGardner to get involved, and she has won state and national honours in her own right since taking up archery just a few years ago. continued page |
