ALONG FOR THE RIDE
IT’S that time of year again, when bleary-eyed Australian sports fans go without sleep as they take in a range of events from the other side of the world.
And top of these sporting spectaculars is the grandest of cycling’s Grand Tours, the ultimate test of grit and stamina on two wheels – the Tour de France.
And, despite the distraction of stunning scenery and spectator shenanigans, it will be hard to take your eyes off the road as the world’s best cyclists vie for the coveted maillot jaune (yellow jersey).
This year’s edition of the Tour is expected to be a showdown between Slovenian Tadej Pogačar and Dane Jonas Vingegaard. For the past five years it has been one or the other on top of the podium in Paris.
Commentator Matthew Keenan will again be leading the coverage and is excited about what’s to come, especially the Pogačar-Vingegaard rivalry.
“This is cycling’s Roger versus Rafa – two of the sport’s greats, chasing cycling’s biggest prize at the peak of their powers,” says Keenan, who is in his
19th year of covering the Tour.
“Pogačar first won the Tour in 2020 but Vingegaard wasn’t in the race that year. Since then they’ve gone head-to-head, for the last four years, it’s two wins each and two second place finishes each.
“Pogačar is the crowd favourite for his attacking racing style. Vingegaard races with the calculation of an accountant yet you can’t help but admire his meticulous approach to trying to beat Pogačar.
“This year’s Tour will be the best we’ve seen this century… excluding the win by Cadel
Evans in 2011, of course.” Saturday’s first stage is a traditional flat opener – just a lazy 184.9km round trip starting and finishing in Lille.
CYCLING: TOUR DE FRANCE Saturday, live from 9pm, SBS On Demand and 9.35pm, SBS

HEADS OF STATE
Streaming, Prime Video
Movie-star-turned-US-President Will Derringer (John Cena) and embattled UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) are so at odds that the two can barely agree on a lunch order, let alone matters of global security.
But when the rival world leaders – and their elite security teams – are targeted by a ruthless and powerful foreign enemy in this brilliant blockbuster action-comedy from director Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry, Nobody),
Derringer and Clarke find themselves on the run, begrudgingly forced to rely on each other to survive after Air Force One is attacked.
Talented MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas, right) comes to their rescue, before the trio set about unravelling an international conspiracy.
It’s bursting with adrenaline-fuelled stunts and explosive
Political minefield: The US President (John Cena) and UK Prime Minster (Idris Elba) go on the run in Heads of State

Steve Pemberton, Sharon Rooney and Conleth Hill are among the guest stars complicating matters in this third season.
action sequences, but the backbone of this buddy comedy is the chemistry between Elba and Cena, who bonded as antiheroes Bloodsport and Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad
A rare original concept in an industry reliant on remakes, sequels and adaptations, Heads of State leads by example.

FREE-TO-AIR

8.35pm
Any viewers who haven’t yet skipped ahead of the class and binge-watched this addictive, alphabetically angled comedy quiz show on ABC iview are set to have their patience rewarded by this week’s laugh-out-loud episode. Carryover champ Kirsty Webeck faces challengers Becky Lucas, Alexei Toliopoulos and Tony Martin in a spooky spell-a-thon that sees some scarily accurate (and others frighteningly bad) impressions and a spirited “Speance” round, before Logie-nominated host Guy Montgomery (pictured) and assistant Aaron Chen band together to serve the contestants up a slice of rock’n’roll history.
THAT BLACKFELLA SHOW
ABC TV, Saturday, 7.30pm

Premiering on the eve of NAIDOC Week, this one-of-a-kind variety special guarantees laughs, music and quality yarns told in front of a studio audience. Aussie icon Ernie Dingo and ABC News Breakfast journo Bridget Brennan host, with musician, activist and social media star Isaac Compton (pictured from left) providing comic relief. While it’s a loud, proud celebration of Indigenous voices and culture, That Blackfella Show aspires to be a source of entertainment and a point of connection for all Australians. It’s the hour of power Saturday nights have been crying out for.
DANCING WITH THE STARS
Seven, Sunday, 7pm

Now that we’ve seen all 12 celebs (and host Sonia Kruger) put their best footwork forward, the first elimination looms for the second batch of stars. Home and Away’s Kyle Shilling opens tonight’s show with a powerful Viennese waltz, before newsreader Karina Carvalho shuns her serious side for a sexy salsa, and Mia Fevola pays tribute to her mum Alex by waltzing to a sentimental song. It’s a hard act to follow, but Shaun Micallef brings his very best Fred Astaire to the foxtrot. Then, the only way is up for Osher Günsberg, who’s determined to improve upon his single-digit score. Comedian Felicity Ward (pictured with partner Aric Yegudkin) closes the show with a paper-doll cha cha that’s anything but one-dimensional.

DO NOT WATCH THIS SHOW
ABC Family, Monday, 7.30pm
Andy Lee brings his popular Do Not Open to the small screen in this animated caper. This time, blue monster Wizz (voiced by Lee) is the star of a television show he doesn’t want, and impels audiences to switch off the TV – but we all know kids love to do the opposite of what they’re told. Little viewers will develop a sense of bravery as they defy pompous protagonist Wizz and follow him on his adventures. Lee has called on some well-known mates to bring Wizz’s world to life, with Denise Scott, Joel Creasey and Dave Hughes voicing regular characters, while Hamish Blake, Carrie Bickmore, Tony Armstrong and Chrissie Swan make guest appearances.

Many people can vouch that a good old “bitsa” or crossbreed makes a very loyal companion.
They are extremely common, particularly in animal shelters, and make fantastic friends.
Sometimes we know or can guess the combination making up our beloved pet; other times they could be a mixture of anything - a bit of this, a bit of that.
Have you ever been curious to know what ‘bits’ your best mate is made up of?
You can take some non-invasive cheek swabs and send them to a laboratory to run DNA analysis against a breed database.
This detects how much of each breed is in your dog displayed as percentages and can give some clues as to behavioural and physical traits they may be predisposed to.
You can carry this out at home and get results directly, or if you would like our help
to take the swab we would be happy to see you at the clinic.
If you’re a breeder, you can also use these tests to confirm the pedigree of your animal.
Genetic testing is also available for other purposes such as testing the prevalence of hereditary diseases (i.e. the bleeding disorder Von Willebrand’s Disease in Dobermans).
It can also screen animals for issues that may crop up later in life such as issues with vision and blindness in Border Collies and Golden Retrievers.
While many of these tests are still in a research phase, they can be helpful if you’re thinking of breeding or just want some more information.
Contact your local veterinarian if you would like further information about the testing process.
This technology not only allows us to monitor hereditary disease prevalence but also allows a bit of fun... what crossbreed do you think Clyde (pictured) is?

SUPERB SNOW Snow

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER
ANOTHER big dump of snow last week at the alpine resorts has been providing skiers and snowboarders with some of the best conditions seen in years.
Rainfall on Monday gave way to consistent snowfalls on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, blanketed both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek in more than 40cms of fresh, natural dry snow, offering unbelievable off-piste and groomed trail skiing and boarding.
Mt Hotham marketing coordinator Alex Pankiw said powder conditions at the resort had been epic for early season, with a healthy 70cm base.
“Some locals say the conditions have been the best they have ever seen...and it’s just in time for the school holidays,” he said.
“Unlike other resorts, Hotham’s village sits high among the mountain peaks at 1750m.
“Our guests wake up to glorious panoramic views, before stepping outside into the crisp alpine air, click into gear from ski-in ski-out stays, and get unbeatable first turns in - right from the top.”
Hotham on Monday this week had 10 of
its 14 lifts operating, 69 of its 105 groomed trails and both terrain parks opened, and offered great cross country skiing.
Tool Talk

Falls Creek started this week with a 71cm snow base and all of its 15 lifts - except International, Lakeside and Summitoperating to service superb terrain suitable for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers and boarders.
Cross country skiers had excellent to very good conditions on 40kms of groomed trails.
Dinner Plain visitors have been enjoying skiing and boarding on the Cobungra Platter ski slope which is perfect for beginners, as well as tobogganing on Australia’s longest run, and cross country skiing on local trails.
At Mt Buffalo on Monday this week there was still had good tobogganing at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley, with good cross country skiing on groomed trails.
Remember you must carry chains when visiting the alpine resorts and fit when and where directed.

DEEP IMPACT: Explore Kincrome’s range of sockets at North East Fasteners, Wangaratta. PHOTO: kasarp studio/ Shutterstock.com
Fastening and loosening made simple
By MICHAEL BAILLIE NORTH EAST FASTENERS
A reliable set of tools are a must for every workshop, and Kincrome’s quality range of impact sockets is raising the bar.
Kincrome’s Deep Impact Socket Set is manufactured from Chrome Molybdenum (CrMo) with a black phosphate finish for superior corrosion protection, all encased within a protective blow mould case.
Ink Fill stamping provides clear visibility and size identification, while the colour coded rings on sockets make it easy to identify the unit of measurement.
Moreover, Kincrome’s Peripheral Driveâ„¢ technology provides greater torque by relocating the load to the flat sides of the fastener which in turn creates greater surface area contact and prevents the “rounding off” of fasteners.
The Deep Impact Socket Set can be purchased at North East Fasteners, Wangaratta.
