SHOCK, adjustment, and then joy. That’s the gamut of emotions parents often have when told they’re expecting multiple births, such as twins. For two Wangaratta families, the hard work involved in raising their twins has been more than outweighed by the joy they’ve experienced. Wangaratta mum Erin Burrows didn’t discover she was pregnant with her now eight year old twins, Kaeden and Riley, until 20 weeks into her pregnancy. She admits “there was shock” as there are no sets of twins on either side of her family, but then came the rush to find a twin pram and enough baby items for two. Once the twins were born – much to the delight of elder sister Charlotte – Erin was essentially housebound for a long while because of the extra time it took to prepare to go out. She and husband Ryan got through it all with the support of each other and their families, and by not placing undue pressure on themselves. And Erin said while it can be tempting to treat twins the same, “we were adamant to have them as individuals”. Now in grade three, Riley is laidback and imaginative while Kaeden is competitive and enthusiastic about sports, and “they’re good company for each other, and understand each other well”. The Burrows’ advice for anyone expecting a multiple birth is to take things as they come and not have too many expectations, as well as taking advantage of any information and support offered. While the early years with twins can be daunting, Erin said things get easier as they get older. continued page |
