FEW things are more synonymous with spring in the North East than the humble agricultural show. The lovingly handmade, grown or baked items in the pavilions; the cacophony of noises in animal nurseries and livestock yards; and excited families enjoying a fun day out are all part of the rich tapestry of country shows. And like most community events, there is an army of people volunteering year round behind the scenes to ensure the shows remain a highlight on local calendars. Wangaratta Agricultural Society president Bernie Evans has had a 40 year association with the show, the first 30 showing his cattle and the past decade involved with the society. And with the 150th Wangaratta Show just over a week away, he said the key to keeping local shows popular is to evolve with the times. “As long as you’re prepared to change and keep going with what people want, people will keep coming to your show,” he said. “We’ve got a good committee here, and we all like to do our share.” A cattle farmer by trade, he has proudly shown off his Simmental cattle at Wangaratta, Benalla and Myrtleford for decades. Bernie said that over the years, and since the advent of field days, local shows have evolved from being a showcase for farmers, machinery firms and producers to events aimed more at townspeople. continued page |
