Up our streams and rivers for trout

THE start of the new trout season is upon us and local fishermen and women are pulling out their rods, checking lures and baiting hooks as they prepare to get out and fish in earnest.

Whether you favour bait fishing with a sinker; using the weight of the lure to cast or if you prefer the elegance of fly fishing; imitating natural insects at different stages of their life cycle by using feathers and fur flies, the streams and rivers in the North East are waiting.

Trout season in rivers and streams opens this Saturday, September 4.

Getting out and about is, however, subject to the state’s prevailing COVID restrictions.

Wangaratta’s Greg Wood is one angler who, along with members of the Wangaratta Fly Fishing Club., are keen to get out as soon as restrictions allow.

“The closure between June and September is to allow the trout to spawn unmolested, thereby ensuring successful breeding each year to replenish the waterways,” Greg explained.

“Lakes can be fished year round but there are different size and catch limits between rivers and lakes.”

Greg believes North East Victoria has the best rivers and streams for trout in Australia.

“The waterways are predominately free stone which means rock and pebble bottoms, so fish have plenty of holding lies and food drifting down to them,” he said.

“The waterways around Wangaratta hold good numbers of fish, which can change seasonally, and they are opportunistic, which means relatively easy to catch.”

The Wangaratta Fly Fishing Club was founded in 1950 by 10 local identities - Vic Culph, Bill Law, Norm Gibb, Vern Deprada, Bill Just, Jack Law, Jack Ritchens, Digger Lazarrotto, Ron McKenzie and Jack Swain.

There is a chequered history to arrive at an agreed date for the celebration of Wattle Day. The first Wattle Day was on September 1, 1910 in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

This was re-branded as 1st August in 1916 in NSW. With various other attempts in between, it was re-introduced in the 1980s as September 1 in the eastern states.

Finally, after much to-ing and fro-ing, September 1, 1988 was declared Australia’s national Wattle Day, in time to celebrate the nation’s bi-centenary.

At the same time, the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was officially declared Australia’s national emblem, and Australia’s national colours of green and gold became Pʺ DJBM

The species originates from near Perth, WA, and is classified as ‘threatened’.

It grows on hills amongst granite outcrops.

The foliage is greyish and soft to the touch.

It requires well-drained soils and full or part sun.

Mature plants may reach up to three metres and can be pruned to shape.

They will re-sprout from older wood.

There’s a whole universe of diversity out there in the acacia genus, just waiting to be discovered or planted in your own patch.

Buller Wines Balladeer Durif 2019 THE later in the year it gets, the less likely it feels we’re ever going to get the chance to take a break and enjoy a seaside holiday.

As much as I enjoy the country, there are times when I yearn to smell the salty air, feel sand between my toes, hear the waves crashing and perhaps cast a line into the ocean.

The last beachside break was a long time ago now and what had been a productive morning of fishing was cut short when a southerly nearly blew us off the end of the pier.

It was sandy, it was squally but it was great fun.

Having no sand let alone ocean within a five kilometre radius, the closest I’m going to get to the waves is with Buller Wines Balladeer Durif.

Established in Rutherglen in 1921 by Reginald Langdon Buller, Buller Wines century old ‘Calliope Vineyard’ was named after the only surviving ship from the Great Hurricane of Samoa, and an image of the ship is synonymous with the brand.

The Durif has a dark and stormy colour; deep, black-red and inky with a rich, ripe cherry and blackberry aroma.

It’s full-bodied and intensely fruity; kind of lush with berry

The club was established to provide an opportunity for like minded individuals to discuss knowledge and share a sport they loved - something that still occurs today.

“Ours is one of the oldest fly fishing clubs in Victoria and has continuously operated over the time,” said Greg.

“We currently have 25 members from Wangaratta, Yarrawonga and Benalla, but new members are always welcome.”

Ranging from 20 to 75 years old, the group regularly fishes the waterways around North East Victoria, the Snowy Mountains, Tasmania and New Zealand and conducts monthly fishing trips, camping on a river using the club catering trailer in the warmer months.

As a child, Greg started bait fishing with his father, moving onto lure casting before taking up fly fishing in 1992.

“I was unsuccessfully fishing lures to trout that were taking insects off the surface and I thought ‘there must be a better way to catch these’, thus I started down the journey of fly fishing,” he said.

“I think the pinnacle of fly fishing is sight fishing to a trout - the whole visual aspect: seeing the fish, casting to it, seeing it take the natural-looking fly off the surface and then landing it.”

The popularity of fly fishing has grown over the years and where historically it was a male-dominated sport and only undertaken by the well off, the past decade has seen such barriers fall with people from all

walks of life taking it up.

“The equipment was all hand made and expensive and those partaking in the sport were snobbish, but more women have now taken up fly fishing and the sport is becoming representative of the general population,” Greg said.

His largest trout caught on fly weighed in at 5lbs, and earlier this year he landed a 4.5lb brown trout in a North East stream.

“The biggest trout I have ever caught on fly was a 7.5lb in New Zealand,” Greg said.

“I did hook an even bigger one over there, but landing them in fast water and light line is a different matter.

“The largest fish I have ever landed was a Murray cod out of Lake Mulwala on a surface fly.

“It wasn’t a monster like some of the ones that come out of there but it was big enough to get a smile on my face.”

The Wangaratta Fly Fishing Club meets at the Log Cabin in Chisholm Street Wangaratta on the first Wednesday of the month except for January, June and July and will hold its annual Introduction to Fly Fishing Course on Sunday, October 10.

“The course aims to introduce people to fly fishing with hands-on casting, explanations about what fly fishing is, what equipment is used, how to cast, stream craft, basic entomology (what insects are around when), flies to use and fly tying,” Greg said.

“It’s a great starting point to understand and get involved in the sport but bookings are

UP THE SLOPES

◆ CATCH CLOSE TO HOME: Ovens River yellowbelly caught in Wangaratta last week on a bunch of worms.

Statewide lockdown limits fishing within 5kms of home G’DAY folks it’s great to be back writing my weekly fishing column after my winter hiatus.

As we head into spring I am faced with a few challenges, the biggest being lockdowns!

What do I write about?

What can and can’t we do?

When we will be allowed to travel again?

At the time of writing, we’re still in lockdown awaiting an announcement as to whether it will be extended beyond September 2.

I am predicting that it will be extended, so will focus this report on what the current rules and regulations allow us to do.

At the moment, under our current Victorian lockdown arrangements, we are indeed allowed to go fishing.

Fishing is classed as passive exercise, and is currently permitted under strict rules.

We must fish within 5km of home and can fish up to a maximum of two hours per day.

Also, we can fish with one other person provided we meet them there and we both wear a mask, and maintain our 1.5m distance.

If the lockdown is extended as I assume it will be, I will miss trout opening - scheduled for this weekend - for the second year in a row.

I am just thankful that living in Wangaratta I have access to the Ovens and King rivers where I have already been catching a few carp, crayfish and even a yellowbelly during the lockdown.

Murray cod are off limits from September 1 for three months during the closed season.

Last Thursday I caught a yellowbelly and a couple of carp in the Ovens River in Wangaratta on a bunch of worms.

With warm weather in the forecast, the fishing may even get better next week.

Hopefully by next week I will have a clearer understanding of what is happening with the lockdown rules moving forward.

Stay safe everyone and do the right thing and hopefully we can all travel to our favourite fishing spots again really soon.

Science Week 2021 - Food for thought THIS year, the school theme for National Science Week was ‘Food: Different By Design’.

Australia is a world leader in food production, and recent innovations in food science and technology are set to propel us inot the future.

The CSIRO, along with Australian industries and entrepreneurs, is already forging bold new ground using science to see into the future, where exciting innovations are waiting to be explored.

Already we’ve seen examples of Australia’s growing alternative protein industry.

Last year CSIRO announced a partnership with plant-based meat product start-up V2Foods - a new company formed using CSIRO science, investment from the CSIRO Innovation Fund and in partnership with Competitive Foods.

TECH & SCIENCE with CHRIS FEBVRE NEM Technology Facilitator

At St Patrick’s Primary School the foundation students put on their food scientist hats to design their own veggie ‘Budda’ bowls, including vegetables that are in season and Australian grown.

They then learnt about mixtures and made a sweet, salty and sour dressing with soy sauce, lime juice, and a little dash of honey honey - producing delicious results.

Grade one and two students conducted experiments to investigate optimal growing conditions for seeds and mushrooms.

Variables they explored included how sunlight can impact growth, soil type or amount of water.

Once ready for harvest they will be exploring children approved recipes for their produce.

Grade five and six students involved in the Able, Gifted and Talented (AG & T) program explored the carbon footprint of the foods we eat, including innovations in insect protein production.

Students are explored how cricket protein powder can be incorporated in common school lunch box snacks like muffins and corn chips.

Another two groups are designed, their own low carbon footprint burger exploring lower carbon alternatives to the regular beef burger.

Great job students, it sounds like you made some yummy science snacks.
