THE drive to advocate, communicate and lead were the forces behind 13 individual women who came from across the North East to participate in the Enabling Women program recently. The program saw Women’s Health Goulburn North East (WHGNE) partner with Women with Disabilities Victoria (WDV) over five days in April and May, and it was designed to empower women with disabilities to have a voice about issues that relate to them and other women with disabilities. Among the many local women who have benefited from the program were mentor Maureen Bott and program participant Alison Holmes. “It’s all very new for me,” the cheerful Ms Holmes said of participating in the program. “It helped me meet new people and new faces.” The fiercely independent Ms Holmes said she benefited from the program, and by the end of it, she had gained so much confidence that she was able to speak to assembled school students on a local bus and educate them about equal access. Mentor Maureen was very proud of her new found friend, saying that Alison has boundless energy and a willingness to learn. “Alison is the busiest person I know,” she said. “There’s no end to what Alison can achieve and do.” Coming from a background working as a disability services officer, Maureen said participating in Enabling Women was a natural fit for her. She added that the program had also helped her and Alison forge a new friendship that was set to continue into the future. continued page |

What’s in your garden: Two large oak trees (a pin oak and a common oak) are the centre piece of our backyard with other deciduous trees along the fence line along with under plantings of bulbs, hellebores, aquilegias and Japanese anemones. Also Terry’s vegetable garden and fruit trees. What do you enjoy about gardening: The joy of seeing our garden change through the seasons.
The daffodils in late winter and the start of spring. The change of colour in the leaves which means rugging up for the winter cold. Favourite plant/spot in your garden: We love to eat our own fruit and vegetables. To sit back on the front veranda, sipping a glass of wine overlooking our garden. Enjoying the peace and quiet, the beautiful sunsets and the parrots in our trees.
Water saving/ conservation tip: Mulching our autumn leaves and adding plenty of mulch around the base of the trees and shrubs. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Do a little often. Fertilise your garden with plenty of manure and dynamic lifter each year. It might smell but the plants love it and give your garden love.
FEIJOA is the fruit of Acca sellowiana, an evergreen shrub or small tree, growing to 1-7m in height. Commonly known as Pineapple or Strawberry Guava, it has beautiful red flowers in spring followed by delicious autumn fruit. It can be grown as an ornamental specimen or for its sweet tasting pineapple like fruit. Feijoa have grey-green leathery foliage with white felt undersides. The flowers have petals coloured red inside and white outside and beautiful bright red stamens topped with large grains of yellow pollen. Feijoa trees flower in November/ December. The flower petals are edible with a sweet spicy flavour and make a great addition to salads. The egg-sized green fruit matures in late autumn, early winter. It has a distinctive smell. The fruit remains green but drops to the ground when ripe and at its fullest flavour. Feijoa fruit has a sweet, aromatic flavour which tastes like pineapple, apple and mint and juicy flesh. It can be eaten fresh or stewed or made into jellies and wine. Feijoa trees are native to South America and are very hardy. They grow in most well drained soils and prefer full sun for maximum flowering and fruiting.

The common feijoa, Acca sellowiana is grown from seed and used mainly for ornamental or hedge planting. It can eventually fruit but is not as reliable or abundant as grafted cultivars. Some grafted cultivars of feijoa are self-fertile, most are not, and require two or more trees for successful pollination and fruit formation. Even the self -fertile varieties bear more fruitfully if they are crosspollinated with another cultivar. Feijoa - “Mammoth” has large, round or oval fruit with wrinkled, thick skin. It has a very good flavour and is selffertile, but produces heavier crops when cross-pollinated with “Triumph”. It fruits late April, early May. Feijoa -“Triumph” has short, oval, plump, medium - large fruit with firm skin and a sharp flavour. It bears heavily when cross-pollinated with Mammoth and fruits in May. Feijoa - “Duffy” was cultivated in Victoria. It has a very pleasant flavour and is grown commercially for heavy and reliable crops. Happy gardening.

Travelling with your pet THE school holidays are fast approaching. Heading away with the family, including those four-legged family members, may be something you are considering. Being able to travel and bond as an entire family is great, and to help ensure that it’s smooth sailing here are some words of wisdom. Initially, not every pet travels well in the car. Taking the time to invest in the appropriate harness to keep you and your pet safe, and getting them accustomed to the motion of driving will make sure that they are well behaved and happy travelling companions. Do your research. Make sure beforehand that the place you are going to be staying is pet-friendly. If so, be aware of any requirements. For example, some caravan parks require animals to be up to date with their vaccinations.
Additionally, be aware of any diseases or pet health issues that may be common in the area you are travelling to, and the best preventive action to take to avoid them. For example, if you are heading up the coast, remember that sub-tropical environments are a favourite for ticks. Taking all your pet’s medication, and making a note in advance of the contact details of local vets in the area is also a good idea. WHGNE health promotion worker Bernadette Fraser said that when each woman graduated from the program, “you could see the pride in their faces”. She added that WHGNE had themselves learned “so much about access and inclusion” by running the program. Ms Fraser said that each woman participating had taken away something different from the program, from improving communication skills and gaining confidence to sparking a passion to lead and speak out and advocate for rights and access, and much more. She said that it had had a positive impact on the lives of everyone involved and would have a “positive ripple effect” on the communities of each woman who participated in the program. “For some women, it was the first step,” she said.

Trout season drawing to a close WELCOME to winter. Did you know that many countries in the northern hemisphere begin their season on the solstice and not a calendar date? Their summer will start on June 22 and their winter starts on December 22 not the 1st – amazing. Anyhow let’s talk fishing…. and the Victorian and NSW trout seasons are about to draw to a close. Midnight on the Monday of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend is when the season is officially closed. (I’m sure I saw the old girl celebrating her 90th birthday on TV last month.) After that date the trout streams are off limits. Some streams are completely closed to all forms of fishing, and just being in possession of fishing gear

his dog seems to be catching trout there, with bullet lures accounting for many of the fish caught. I have been fishing the smaller creeks and tributaries which has been very rewarding. Fluorescent coloured bladed spinners and worms have been doing the damage for me. I have really been enjoying drifting worms in small streams lately. I have had one report of two Murray cod, both oversize (75cm+) being caught in the Murray River near Corowa last week. The gentleman who caught them, and wishes to remain nameless, caught them both on a purple Bassman “codman” spinnerbait retrieved so slowly that the blades were just ticking over.

It has a delightfully heady, floral aroma, filled with orange blossom and a touch of warm spice. Auto Gas, 1942 A MEETING was held in Wangaratta to discuss fitting gas producers to cars as a wartime emergency. It wasn’t really surprising that motorists weren’t rushing to fit the devices – they were cumbersome, unsightly, and had to be filled with charcoal and cleaned out regularly. A technical school pupil, Russell Skehan, aged 17, made a gas producer at school that took three months to build, held three bags of charcoal, and when fitted to his car, could power the vehicle to speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
IN the wake of research released last week showing that Australians are a long way from meeting their recommended daily serves of vegetables and dairy, The Dairy Kitchen has created a new collection of vegetable-packed, calcium-rich recipes to inspire and motivate. THERE are a few tips to getting the most out of your food and wine festival experience. The first is to make a list and get started early, which is the best way to target the venues you really want to visit before they get too busy. That list should include the venue with the food you’re most eager to try first, and a morning lunch is a must, so that you can enjoy it while there are still seats available. It’s amazing how once seated, you can relax and concentrate on the wine, and at festival time it often helps to focus on one or two particular styles or varieties to avoid confusion. If there were such a thing as “festival etiquette”, I’d suggest it would include always moving away from the tasting tables when you’ve finished sampling, leaving the space open to others. The gander is getting more than the goose? NOT surprising that our federal politicians are treated differently from the other 23 million Australians who the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will not allow to claim deductions like the pollies. It is fine for ministers and other members of parliament to claim a tax free $273 a night travel allowance even if they are living in a residence in Canberra owned by either their spouse or themselves. The fact that a “remuneration tribunal, which is independent of the government” has set the pay and allowances payable is a slight of hand way I believe of making sure we are looking after our own. The average Australian with a rental property is able to claim a tax deduction for rates, insurance, repairs and interest, but needs to be apportioned if it is only rented out

Mr Turnbull added “and of course the Australian Tax Office sets the rules and there’s quite a long ruling that sets all the rules for deductibility which are in line with business expense deductibility”. It was pleasing to read that the ATO will be conducting a review of the controversial entitlement that has enabled politicians from both
sides to cash in on generous tax deductions. Tax commissioner Chris Jordan said politicians were not afforded any “special” treatment by the tax system. “Any taxpayer who has had to travel overnight for work is entitled to deduct the cost of meals and accommodation under our tax laws,” Mr Jordan said. “Given that there are clear misunderstandings of how the ruling is applied, we will undertake to review the 1999 ruling to give greater clarity for all taxpayers on the treatment of allowances they may receive from their employer to cover the cost of work-related travel.” I was interested to read the Prime Minister saying he claimed the $273 a night travel allowance
“like every politician”. I must have missed it, but I understood we (the taxpayer) provided a residence in Canberra for our Prime Ministers. I must say that in over 30 years in public practice, I believe that both travelling allowances and overnight allowances paid to long distance truck drivers would be the greatest grey area that we experienced. I can recall some years ago when the taxation office looked hard at long distance truck driver claims and where the employer paid an allowance less than the food and drink allowance as reported by the ATO, they were able to claim (in 2014/2015 Tax return) $93.40 per day without the need for substantiation, but the Commissioner took the view that long distance truck
drivers requiring to be away from home overnight almost always had a sleeping compartment in the vehicle, so claims for accommodation were usually rejected, unless they could produce receipts for accommodation. However, overtime meal allowances are treated differently again as they are usually covered by an industrial award and in 2014/2015 were $28.40. It concerns me that the use of travel allowances paid can be so different, but in my research from the ATO, it clearly states ”the travel allowance paid to Federal Members of Parliament and Federal Parliamentary Secretaries under the arrangements that commenced on April 14, 1998, are considered reasonable amounts for the recipients of those allowances”.
