MINDY Craig cannot forget the sudden moment that, six months ago, changed her life forever.

On a routine drive near the Whorouly home she shares with husband Sam, she was involved in a car accident that left her with grave injuries and a grim outlook.

She was pinned under her vehicle – the kind of injury that only a tiny percentage of people survive – and sustained multiple fractures in her jaw and spine, a crushed shoulder, dislocations, fractures in the front and back of her rib cage, punctured lungs and spleen, several cuts and a nasty haemotoma on her leg.

Mindy is flooded with emotion as she recalls how a shell shocked Sam and daughter Ashley were advised to say their goodbyes, in case the worst happened.

But through it all, neither Mindy nor her family refused to give up.

“I woke up six days after the crash, and the first thing I saw was Ashley with a stuffed unicorn,” Mindy said.

Surrounded by loved ones in hospital, she described herself as feeling like a “popped frog”.

But she was greeted by the unwavering support of her family, her North East Roller Derby “wife” Syb White, and many others.

Her neighbors, friends and derby community alike sprang into action to help raise funds for her hospital treatments, keep her home running and more generosity which still stuns her. continued page |

HIDEAWAY: Jobe Currie and Tiana Williams emerge from one of the trees in the Oxley Primary School playgrounds, which offers lots of shade, and is almost a cubby, for school students at recess and lunchtime.

What’s in your garden: Our garden has lots of things in it.

It has pumpkins, blue tongue lizards and their babies, birds, flowers, bees, wasps and ladybirds.

It has frogs that are big and sometimes small, skinks, lizards and don’t forget our chooks.

What do you enjoy about gardening: Tiana likes smelling the flowers and finding ladybirds on the leaves when they are hiding.

Jobe likes finding creatures under rocks and digging for potatoes in the veggie patch.

He finds lots and calls over to his friends to help dig.

He says “I’m gonna make French fries.”

Favorite plant/spot in your garden: Tiana’s favorite spot in our garden is under the shady trees where we can play hide and seek.

Jobe likes to go anywhere he can find things that crawl and hop.

We water the garden when it doesn’t rain and our chooks eat the bugs, but sometimes the worms which isn’t good.

FOR a hardy plant with a long flowering period that continues through autumn, consider the Mexican sage bush, botanically known as Salvia leucantha.

Salvias belong to the mint family, with over 900 species including annuals and perennials.

Salvia leucantha is a perennial which grows up to 1.5 metres tall and wide.

It has silvery grey leaves and beautiful velvety purple flowers on arching square stems.

They have a long flowering period and start to flower in spring and continue through summer and autumn.

The flowers attract bees, birds and butterflies and can be cut for use in floral arrangements.

To encourage more flowering, routinely remove the deadheads of spent flowers.

Salvia leucantha is a hardy plant needing little water once established making it suitable for dry conditions.

It is one of the fastest growing Salvias and has a naturally rounded shape, almost cloud like, adding to its beauty.

It is ideal in mixed perennial borders in a cottage-style garden or planted in large containers.

Although tough, they grow better in full sun, but can handle light shade as well. If it is too shady the plant may become leggy.

They do well in most soils, provided

they are well draining, as they don’t like wet or waterlogged conditions.

They require little maintenance apart from applying a slow release fertiliser in spring.

When flowering finishes in late autumn, cut the stems down to ground level; new growth will emerge in spring.

Established plants are frost tolerant but young plants may need protection for the first few years.

In colder climates growth will slow down and the plant may become completely dormant over winter.

New hybrids of salvia leucantha are available with colors ranging from indigo blue to deep purple and white and pink flowers.

A smaller growing form, with deep purple flowers grows to around 80cm.

Check out what is in bloom in nurseries now or try growing from seed, or from cuttings.

Cuttings can be taken in spring right through to autumn.

They can also be grown by division.

Dig up and divide existing plants in spring.

New developments in flea prevention

TEAM: Mindy Craig has drawn comfort and strength from the unwavering support of family and friends, including husband Sam.

“One friend paid $100 for a sausage at Bunnings,” she said.

Mindy surprised everyone around her by walking out of the Alfred Hospital’s rehabilitation program in a matter of six weeks, rather than the six months they expected.

And while she will forever feel the effects of the accident, Mindy is determined to enjoy life to the fullest.

“This life is completely different to the one before the accident,” she said.

“I have good days and bad days.

“But here I am, fighting fit.”

She attributes her tenacity and strength to her involvement in roller derby, saying that her skating fitness is one of the reasons she is still around and recovering.

A twist of fate which saw a Melbourne triage doctor being the first at the scene, who helped get her out from under the vehicle, also played a large part in her recovery.

“That decision saved my life,” she said, humbled and thankful for the efforts of neighbors, friends and medical personnel

which have all contributed to her recovery.

Her sense of humor is still well and truly intact, and she enjoys taking pleasure in the little things in life.

“If you don’t have a sense of humor, you may as well be in a hole in the ground,” she said.

“Why be serious?”

At the beginning of May, Road Trauma Support Services Victoria is holding a campaign, Shine a Light on Road Safety, to raise awareness about the effects of road trauma, reduce deaths and injuries on our roads and raise funds to support those impacted by road trauma.

The awareness campaign also coincides with the Third United Nations Global Road Safety Week, taking place on May 4-10.

The public can get involved by turning on their headlights while driving on Friday, May 1 to demonstrate a commitment to road safety; or learn more about road trauma, and other planned awareness events, on www.rtssv.org.au.

FLEAS have been a perennial problem for dogs and cats for as long as anyone can remember.

Over time there have been many and varied ideas and treatments designed to rid our furry friends of this pest.

As you may expect some of these methods have been more successful than others and some have seen good effect only to experience the development of resistance over time.

Fleas will be parasites that affect dogs and cats well into the future and flea control is an area that sees continual development of products to help keep our pets flea free.

Of late there have been several new products come onto the market that are purported as “new generation” flea products.

These products include Comfortis, Nexgard and Activyl.

We still see good efficacy from the stalwarts of flea prevention, Advantage and Frontline, but the newer generation products may be worth a try if you feel like you are having great difficulty getting rid of fleas from your pets.

Comfortis and Nexgard are

given as a tablet/chew, which in some cases is harder than the application of a “spot-on” to the back of the neck.

However, you do have the benefit that once the dog has swallowed the product you don’t have to worry about keeping them away from water for any length of time, which can be problematic for some spot-on treatments.

In many cases the flea product gets blamed for failure to get rid of fleas, but before you get to this point it is important to remember the fundamentals of flea eradication and prevention.

The most important fact is that 90 per cent of the flea life cycle occurs off our pets in their environment.

So for every flea you see there are nine other eggs, larvae or fleas in the bedding, carpet or backyard.

Some of these areas we have control over through flea bombs and vacuuming in the house and regular machine washing or discarding of dog/cat bedding.

The other main point is that cats and dogs carry fleas and if you are not treating all animals in your

household then you are leaving your pets open to reinfection over and over again.

In an ideal world every pet in the house is treated with a once a month flea preventative every month of the year along with the regular vacuuming of areas where pets commonly sit and sleep inside.

If this is done any eggs, larvae and fleas in the environment will inevitably grow up and try to get on the pets.

The flea preventative will kill these fleas and you will exhaust the flea life stages in your house creating a flea free environment.

If you are having problems with fleas please talk to your vet about a plan to help your pets.

It takes time and patience to truly get rid of them for good with many of the failures to do with thinking things are right before they truly are.

SMALL TROUT: I caught this brown trout of around 20cm on a Metalhead soft plastic in WASP color in a tributary of the Kiewa River. The smaller feeder streams are fishing better than the main rivers at the moment.

It’s a bit tough at present LAST week my old man, his brother and a couple of their mates went over to Lake Eildon for their annual fishing trip.

The fishing was absolutely dead and it was the first time in the history of their annual fishing trips which now span 20 or so years that they did not get to keep a feed of fish at some stage during the week.

They fished Lake Eildon all week, and on one occasion two of them went over to Lake

Nillahcootie where things were not much better.

For the week they ended up with one small Murray cod, a dozen or so tiny redfin and a few carp and that was it.

Last weekend I went to Mt Beauty and spent a bit of time trout fishing the Kiewa River, which looked superb, but the fishing was very tough.

I did manage to catch a few trout in one of the tributaries of the Kiewa River.

A few of the tributaries are fishing well but the main Kiewa River itself is fishing very slow.

I was talking to a fly fisherman who was telling me that the Kiewa

River has been fishing very slow for a few years now.

That same fella did mention that the Mitta Mitta River has been fishing quite well for trout - a story I have heard from a few people lately.

The lower reaches of the Ovens River around Bundalong fished quite well over the weekend too.

I had a report of one bloke catching a 95cm and a 73cm Murray cod.

I also had a report from my wife’s cousin of her father in law catching a massive 130cm Murray cod on a bunch of worms in that same section of water in the far lower Ovens River.

TRANSPORT advocate RACV says preparing your vehicle before heading off for the Easter holiday break, could save your life and the lives of others on the road.

RACV manager Vehicle Engineering Michael Case, says just a few simple steps will ensure that you and your vehicle are prepared for the journey.

“Vehicle safety checks are crucial, regardless of whether your car is new or an older model and we suggest preparing a pre-trip vehicle checklist as part of your holiday planning.

“That list must include a check of fluid levels, the radiator and cooling system and the battery, and most importantly motorists should pay particular attention to tyres and brakes,” Mr Case said.

“I cannot stress enough how important tyres are to a car’s safety.

“RACV’s research has found that tyres are often neglected, with one in five cars on Victoria’s roads found to have at least one unroadworthy tyre.

“Our research data has also shown that half the drivers surveyed were unaware of how to properly check the condition of their tyres,” Mr Case said.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Jean McNamara, 1899 BORN in Beechworth on April 1, 1899, Jean McNamara became one of Australia’s most distinguished medical pioneers.

She pioneered treatment for the effects of polio, and was instrumental in bringing about the control of Australia’s rabbit population by her efforts to introduce the myxomatosis virus.

When she died in 1968, her remains were cremated, and the ashes returned to Beechworth.

She had often expressed a wish to be finally laid to rest under one of the rocks she remembered so well from her early days in Beechworth, a wish that was carried out.

Her ashes were buried in the Beechworth Cemetery, and a rock from the bush was placed over the spot.

Repeat with remaining dough, date filling, and another baking sheet.

Cover buns with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot until almost doubled in size, 30–40 minutes.

Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

Whisk remaining egg and 1 tsp. water in another small bowl and brush over buns.

Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar; bake until golden brown, 20–25 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving.

INGREDIENTS

THERE are a lot of components that go into making a truly memorable wining and dining experience.

We often recall the simple dishes our parents or grandparents made for us as tasting the best, probably because on top the good flavors were lashings of love and warm feelings.

In the same way we often fondly remember every course of a meal, the atmosphere in the restaurant and words spoken years after they happened, when it was a life changing moment.

It’s kind of like a romantic version of beer goggles, without the regrettable consequences.

I remember a night like that in a restaurant in Marysville a couple of decades ago where the food was sublime and we watched a family of possums eating fruit on a platform right outside the window while we enjoyed a bottle of Rosé.

You may like to try these for Easter instead of hot cross buns.

Method Date Filling: Bring dates, salt, and 1½ cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan.

Reduce heat and simmer, stirring and mashing occasionally, until dates are falling apart and water is evaporated (it should be a thick paste), 10–15 minutes.

Let cool, then stir in butter, orange zest, and cinnamon.

Do Ahead: Date filling can be made 1 week ahead. Cover and chill.

Bring to room temperature before using.

Dough: Preheat oven to 160 degrees Celsius.

Heat milk and 1 tbsp honey in a small saucepan until lukewarm.

Combine milk mixture and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer.

As soon as yeast is foamy, about five minutes, add egg yolks, one egg, buttermilk, spelt flour, salt, two cups all-purpose flour, and remaining three tbsp honey; mix on medium speed until dough is smooth, shiny, and elastic, 5–8 minutes.

With motor running, add ½ cup roomtemperature butter, one piece at a time, waiting until each piece is incorporated before adding the next.

Mix one minute, then increase speed to medium-high and mix until dough is soft and supple, 6–8 minutes.

Place dough in a buttered medium bowl.

Brush with melted butter; cover with plastic wrap.

Let dough rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, 1–1½ hours (2–2½ hours if dough was made ahead and chilled).

Divide dough in half.

Roll out one piece on a lightly floured surface to a 15x5” rectangle.

Evenly spread with half of date filling and cut into eight triangles.

Starting with a pointy end, roll up dough (like a reverse crescent roll).

Place, seam side down, on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Electricity prices are shocking us all

When the heart feels ‘frustration” or ‘anger’ the heart beat quickens and creates a jagged wave that goes out of sync with our brain – learning and decision making is poor, feelings of stress and overwhelm occur.

In our practice we see heart rhythms like this affecting short term memory recall, sleep ability, anxiety, panic and stress, school learning ability, mood swings , dizziness, headaches and poor circulation.

This can happen in people of all ages including children.

By focussing your attention to your heart, calming your breathing to a

slow, steady pace and feeling positive emotion, your heart can realign itself with the brain again.

We use this to de-stress our patients, however many counsellors are using this technique to help patients take control over emotion.

Simple technology at our clinic shows the heart rhythms on a computer screen.

A patient can see the effect of their stresses and thoughts on the heart and can learn techniques to correct and calm this.

WHERE will it all end?

I am heartily sick and tired of the constant invasion of my privacy from all these foreign sounding people offering me these great deals on my electricity.

Some years ago when solar was first mooted I thought that this was a great idea as it may save a bit of coal burning in the Latrobe Valley, so I installed some solar panels.

At that time the government was offering an $8000 rebate when a householder installed a 1.2 Kw solar system.

In addition to this I was offered a 66 cents a Kw rebate on all the power I put into the grid for a period of 13 years.

This was a great saving and my consumption costs dropped to almost nothing over the summer months.

But then electricity prices were deregulated in Victoria as it was seen that competition was the best way to keep household power bills down.

Prior to 2002, Victoria had a fully regulated retail electricity market.

A regulated price, known as a standing offer, was set in each of the state’s five distribution areas.

There were the three incumbent electricity retailers – Origin, AGL and TRU Energy (now energy Australia) - and householders had no choice and had to rely on the government, through the regulator, to set a fair price for electricity supplied by the retailer assigned to our area.

But in 2002, everything changed with electricity retailers now free to compete for business across the state - and so started the war between retailers, offering great discounts and incentives which we were not always receiving from the present suppliers.

Many households were able to sign up for a better deal, but if you were like myself, who had locked in a price for my solar, none of the retailers were able to match it.

But the government was not ready to remove all control from selling prices, and

kenclarke11@bigpond.com customers who did not switch to a new offer remained on a regulated standing offer, whilst other consumers could request a standing offer contract from the incumbent retailer when moving house.

This final piece of price regulation was removed in 2009.

It is 13 years since competition was allowed in the market place but still there are some 500,000 consumers remaining on a standing offer.

Far from cutting power bills, in some parts of Victoria, an average household on a standing offer has witnessed their power bill increasing by almost 100 per cent.

According to research, it is not that electricity retailers cannot offer lower prices; they do it all the time with a range of competitive offers, known as market offers.

Most of the phone calls will offer you a discount of up to 27 per cent on usage rates if you pay on time.

So does this mean that those on a standing offer are paying on average about $400 to $500 a year more than consumers who have taken up a market offer?

In my thinking this is correct and the retailer pockets all of this profit.

These consumers should have got off the standing offer as soon as prices became regulated.

My advice to all who have not looked at a change is to go to one of the many welfare agencies in your town - they I am sure will assist you in obtaining a better deal than you presently enjoy.

A saving of $500 per year will go a long way toward giving your family a holiday, just by being pro-active.

Diets high in fried and fatty foods, processed flour based pastries, cakes and white bread, white sugar, excessive animal meats and alcohol with a lack of fresh food, water and regular daily exercise are well documented to put strain on our heart.

The heart has an amazing physical side, but you won’t believe the emotional side - the heartbeat is directly affected by our mood.

The HeartMath Institute in California has noted that when we are feeling positive emotion such as “appreciation” the heart responds by slowing its beat and creating smooth, harmonious waves that match the mood of the brain and its waves.

In this state of harmony, the brain feels clearer, has faster learning, clearer thoughts, better memory and better decision making.
