HELPING women form a community, learn more practical and creative skills and improve their outlook on life has helped fuel a brand new initiative in Beechworth and district. Local resident Margy Barwood said that ever since childhood, she has always felt that dedicated and supportive spaces for women are important. She has been inspired by the growth of the Men’s Shed movement to help create a similar space for women, and this had led to the creation of the newly formed Beechworth Women’s Shed (BWS). Margy said giving women, especially those who are mothers or caregivers, their own outlet and social space assists them in maintaining their own mental health and in turn, helps them better care for those around them. “If you look after the mother, then the children are OK,” she said. Margy has been a keen sewer since childhood out of necessity, and her creative and practical passions have grown over the years to include creating stained glass windows as well as restoring and repairing wooden furniture. She said the BWS evolved earlier this year from a simple desire to connect local women socially. The group has four main purpose areas - which are welfare, health, education and environment - and it harnesses projects that engage sharing, thinking and caring. “BWS is a mixed bunch of ladies who differ in age, abilities and disabilities,” said Margy. “Despite the variation of our lives and journeys, we share a passion for the self worth, health, welfare and happiness of women in our community. “There is a good purpose behind it, a positive atmosphere, and everyone walks away happy. continued page |
