A DIVERSE program that explores gender in great opera, women’s histories, journeys to asylum and ‘world-building’ at the heart of contemporary fairytales is a sign that Beechworth Arts Council is setting out on a fresh path.

These are some of the ingredients of the seventh edition of its Writers, Readers and Poets’ Weekend to be staged in Beechworth from February 10 to 12.

The council’s new president, Jamie Kronborg, and vice president, Daren John Pope, have added to the mix a few opportunities for participants to plunge into art.

These include writing a word on a card and holding it up in a booth for a photograph by artist Inga Hanover so she can build what she describes as an “automatic” poem.

“These digital images of WRAP participants will be bound into a book,” says Inga – who, since 2014, has daily illustrated what now amount to more than 700 pages of Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of things past/In search of lost time.

The seven-volume work by the French author, who lived 1871 to 1922, totals 2605 pages.

The digital image project during WRAP at Beechworth’s George Kerferd Hotel borrows from singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.

“As he has recently won the Nobel prize for literature, think (Dylan’s) ‘Subterranean homesick blues’, where he holds up flash cards with words,” Inga says.

The deliberately eclectic approach to the weekend’s programming is one that Jamie and Daren John describe as ‘the way of the world’.

“We’re trying to offer workshops and discussions that encourage those who come to explore ideas at the edge and to discover fresh and challenging things,” Jamie said. continued page |

Endless summer AS we enter the final month of summer, temperatures are heating up.

With February traditionally the hottest month, life in the summer garden can be tough.

As the gardens struggle during these periods of extreme heat, keep the garden and yourselves hydrated.

Watering is the main task in the garden now.

Watch for signs of stress.

Don’t water during the heat of the day, water early in the morning or in the evening.

Water plants deeply every two or three days, although during very hot spells some plants may need daily/ twice daily watering.

Some plants may wilt or suffer scorch in the hot sun and winds.

Provide some shade, move pots or try Drought Shield, which is sprayed on the leaves to help protect the foliage.

Monitor the moisture levels of pot plants and don’t allow them to dry out.

Once potting mix dries out, it becomes hydrophobic and repels water.

It shrinks away from the edge of the pot so that the water mainly runs down the sides and out the bottom.

Rehydrate spent potting mix by using a soil wetting agent to help improve water absorption.

Plants, especially the vegetable garden and fruiting trees, will also benefit from a feed so apply a liquid

Keeping guinea pigs as pets GUINEA pigs make great pets for children and adults.

Most guinea pigs live for around 5-6 years, they are inexpensive to buy and most pet shops sell them.

Guinea pigs should be housed in a secure cage to protect them from predators, which can include the family cat and dog.

As they are herbivores, they like to eat grass, hay, vegetables and some fruit.

A guinea pig pellet or mix can also be fed.

Guinea pigs need to obtain vitamin C from their diet so they must have access to vegetables such as carrots, capsicum and tomatoes.

Leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach and brussel sprouts contain vitamin C also.

Access to fresh water at all times is important, drinker bottles are very useful for this, however, it is probably a good

idea to have a dish of water as well, especially when you get a new guinea pig in case they haven’t yet learnt to use a sipper bottle.

As they are social animals it is usually a good idea to have two guinea pigs, however, if you don’t want to breed make sure you buy two of the same sex.

If you are planning on breeding the females should be bred for the first time when they are less than seven months old, if you wait until they are older the pelvis can fuse and birthing difficulties can arise.

The gestation period for guinea pigs is usually between 63 and 70 days.

Generally guinea pigs have very few health problems, things to look out for are mange or dermatitis which is usually caused by mites, foot problems can occur if they are kept on hard surfaces or wire floors.

If the diet doesn’t contain enough fibre occasionally their teeth may need trimming.

It is important to protect them from extreme heat or cold, adequate bedding and shelter in winter will prevent this.

In summer, shade, adequate water and adding frozen water bottles to the cage can help keep them cool.

Rose, raised in Wangaratta, is Australian Book Review editor and author of a memoir, Rose Boys, a compelling family story about Robert Rose (son of Bob), and time spent growing up in the North East.

He is also one of Australia’s leading opera performance critics and at WRAP will explore gender and diversity, feminism and power in the libretti of the key works of Wagner and Verdi. “It could be seen as ‘right out there’ as a subject,â€? says Jamie. “But it’s an intriguing topic given the welcome and tremendous shift to gender equality in our own time. “How did these nineteenthcentury composers and their male librettists interpret the women of their imagined worlds, such as BrĂźnnhilde in The Ring and Violetta in La Traviata?â€?

Hayley Singer, a University of Melbourne creative writing lecturer, says history is made up of remembered stories, acknowledged events and celebrated lives.

Her WRAP workshop will encourage participants to explore women’s histories, particularly those of women from Stanley about whom information has been sourced from the Stanley Athenaeum archives.

WRAP will also feature panel discussion about searching for asylum in a fractured world in which, by the end of 2014, almost 60 million people had been described as “forcibly displaced�.

Some refugee students who last July spent a homestay weekend with Beechworth families are returning to participate in this discussion about

Wangaratta storyteller and illustrator Chris Febvre will also present a workshop about augmenting reality and character construction in modern fairytales, while Yackandandah playwrights Beverley Lello, Kate Rotherham, Lisa Mason and Brendan Hogan and singer-songwriter Pete Denahy will discuss monologue development for their collaborative stage play, From here to there.

Another highlight of WRAP will be a post-dinner conversation on February 11 between The Dressmaker author Rosalie Ham and Beechworthborn poet Eddie Paterson, a University of Melbourne lecturer.

Cod fishing remains strong

STABLE weather patterns and barometer have led to some amazing cod fishing across North East Victoria over the past week.

I have had reports from right across the region, and have had some great cod fishing myself.

Last week Jason Fisher and I fished the Ovens River in Wangaratta.

It was reasonably slow going, with Jason landing a little trout cod and I missed out altogether.

Later in the week, as things were starting to become stable my mate Jayson Pratt and I fished the same spot and caught nine cod between us - seven of which were trout cod and two were Murray cod.

All of the fish were caught on bait and under 20cm long.

On Sunday evening I fished the same spot again, this time with Adam Gatty and Monique Walker.

This time the fishing was red hot and we landed around 10 fish again in a three hour period - this time there was just two trout cod and eight Murray cod, which ranged from around 30cm to around 50cm.

The moral to the story is that as the barometer and the water level all became stable, the Murray cod fishing became fantastic.

All of our cod were caught using cheese and worms for bait.

What is very interesting to note is that with all of the cod my friends and I have caught this season, I have not seen a single carp landed from the Ovens River in Wangaratta.

The Ovens River in Wangaratta is absolutely teeming with these small trout cod at the moment, a wonderful sign of a healthy river system.

Just quickly, I fished Lake William Hovell with my mate Lindsay Knowles last Tuesday and we caught around 30 redfin and one small rainbow trout between us while fishing from our kayaks.

One of the redfin was a nice fish

of around 30cm, but the rest were all small.

The big redfin was trolled on a Halco ‘crazy deep’ lure, and everything else was caught on Strike Tiger nymph soft plastics in the new ‘Orange Spawn’ colour.

As my children get older and their “needs” from mum change, I realise how important it is to be a role model for them.

THIS zesty recipe from the Meat and Livestock Association makes for a crowd pleasing summer meal for four.

Method 1. To prepare the marinade, combine the chilli powder, dried oregano, beef stock and shallots in a glass dish. Add the beef cheeks to marinade and rub all over. Cover with cling film and marinate for 30 minutes or preferably overnight.

2. To cook the beef cheeks, preheat the oven to 160°C. Afterwards, bring the pan to a medium heat, and add one tablespoon of oil. Remove the beef and garlic from the marinade and brown in the pan. Add stock and shallots, and brown for a further five minutes. Cover tightly with foil and a lid, and place in oven for three hours or until the beef is very tender.

Remove pot from the oven, and then carefully remove the foil and lid, before setting aside.

3. Meanwhile, to make the salad, combine all the vegetables into a large bowl and place into the fridge until ready. Cover the red onions with half of the lemon juice and set aside. When ready to serve the salad, whisk lemon juice, water, salt and pepper together and drizzle over.

4. To prepare tortillas, consult the packet for instructions. Shred the meat using a fork, and place into corn tortillas, top with pickled onion, and serve with salad on the side.

CHOOSING a wine variety which will go with just about everything you could find on a menu at this time of year can sometimes be a challenge.

It can also be hard to find a wine that everyone will enjoy, particularly when your Australia Day spread can include everything from lamb chops and meat pies, to Pavlova and lamingtons.

Many of us also give a nod to our cultural background, so there may be spring rolls or pizza in the mix, or perhaps even the controversial “Aussie” ham, egg and pineapple version.

DO you remember what the world was like before the world wide web?

I lived roughly the first twenty years of my life without an internet connection, yet now I can scarcely imagine life without it.

And while I’m probably a heavier user than most people, I’m sure I’m not alone in shuddering at the thought of living without it.

Heralded as one of the greatest achievements in modern history, the internet has irrevocably altered human civilisation in ways we have not yet fully grasped.

It has changed the way we communicate, the way we transfer information, the way we learn, the way we consume, the way we are entertained, the way we receive news, and even the way we govern nations.

Where once so much of the world was isolated from each other, that isolation is shrinking at an ever increasing rate.

Where once we were beholden to mainstream media for information about our nation, or countries overseas, now almost all the information we could ask for comes from all sorts of different sources, and is only a quick search away.

Children born only a few years ago will most likely have their entire lives chronicled online in one form or another.

Long before the base technology

SEARCH THE WEB: While the invention of the internet can’t be credited to any single person, the building blocks were put in place from the 1960s onward, with the first website - info.cern.ch - going live in 1990. existed to build the internet, Nikola Tesla theorised the idea of a world wireless system in the early 1900s.

But it wasn’t until the early 1960s that actual schematics were drafted for an ‘Intergalactic Network’ of computers by J.C.R. Licklider.

In the late 60s, the U.S. Department of Defence funded the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. ARPANET used
