By ANDREA MACKINLAY ANOTHER highly successful Beechworth to Bridge (B2B) walk was held last weekend, as participants walked from Beechworth to Bright

over three days to raise community awareness around the need to eliminate the stigma existing around suicide.

Run by not-for-profit organisation B2B, the walk aims to encourage people im-

pacted by suicide and mental health challenges to open up and talk to others.

Walking from Beechworth through to Bright, the event attracted more than 320 registrations over the three days,

with three legs to the journey and entrants given the option to do one or two legs or all three.

The walkers started their walk from Beechworth on Friday morning for the first

leg to Everton; Saturday, from Everton to Myrtleford, and finally on Sunday, the final leg from Myrtleford to Bright.

The total distance covered was around 75 kilometres.

Masonic Lodge members show their support

By ANDREA MACKINLAY LAST Friday, several members of the Beechworth Masonic Lodge gathered together to honour former lodge member Allan Hawker, presenting a mobility scooter to his widow, Mary.

Lodge member Mick Stribley, who was instrumental in obtaining the scooter, said that Mary’s husband Allan was a 50-Year jewel member of the lodge, which signified Allan’s contribution of service to the Lodge for at least half a century.

At Friday’s presentation, Mr Stribley said the Masonic Lodge was pleased to support the wife of one of the group’s

most beloved members.

“Allan was a good Freemason for over 50 years, so this is the least we can do for you Mary,” he said.

Mick went on to remind Mary of all the good she and Allan did whilst they ran the Funeral Directors in Beechworth.

“You and Allan did many good deeds for people, so this is the least we can do for you.”

Reflecting on her late husband, Mary said Allan had been a progressive thinker throughout his life.

“Allan was a wonderful person; he was a very forward thinking man, and he brought many new ideas into

the funeral industry,” she said.

The Beechworth Lodge will apply to the Victorian Freemason’s Foundation in Melbourne for reimbursement for the mobility scooter paid for by the Beechworth Lodge.

According to Mr Stribley, “this is what the Victorian Freemasons Foundation is for, for helping out people, especially our own members, but also other people in need of assistance.”

“You’re one of our widows Mary, basically a member, and it’s an honour for us to be able to do this - the scooter is for you to use as long as you want.”

Power Saving Bonus to ease the strain THE Andrews Labor Government is giving Victorian households more help to manage cost of living pressures, with another round of the energy bill-busting $250 Power Saving Bonus now open.

Acting Minister for Energy and Resources Ingrid Stitt launched the fourth round of the Labor Government’s Power Saving Bonus, with every Victorian household eligible to receive $250 when they access the Victorian Energy Compare website - even those who received payments under previous rounds.

Since the $250 Power Saving Bonus launched on July 1, 2022, more than 1.8 million households have received the payment by comparing their energy bills - with thousands finding new, cheaper deals to save money all year round.

Ms Stitt said the Power Saving Bonus will help Victorian families cope with the current high costs of living.

“This new round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus helps them to pay the bills and make sure they are getting the best deal on their energy,” she said.

“We’re making sure that Victorians facing hardship receive the Power Saving Bonus, and get the support they need to access concessions for cheaper power through The Energy Assistance Program.”

Applications for the payment can be made through the Victorian Energy Compare website, which gives customers access to the best energy w offers in their areas - potentially saving hundreds of dollars.

The Labor Government is also reducing cost of living pressures through the new Energy Assistance Program, a free service providing energy consumers experiencing hardship with one-onone assistance.

The program is a $3.75 million initiative that will help Victorians struggling with power bills to navigate the energy market, apply for eligible grants and concessions, find and switch to better offers and address billing errors.

For those without internet access, phone and in-person support is available through our Community Outreach Partners - including Anglicare Victoria, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Community Information and Support Victoria, Ethnic Community Council Victoria, Good Shepherd, State Trustees and Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria.

By RYAN MALCOLM B ORGANISERS of an Easter Saturday fun run through the idyllic backdrop of the Beechworth countryside are hoping to build on an event which attracted almost 300 participants last year.

Set to commence from 9am, runners and walkers will embark from Baarmutha Park, with a 3km track creating a circuit around the rear of the Beechworth Golf Club, while a 10km track will take participants onto Alma Road and then onto Kibble Lane to return for an “MCG-style finish.”

The event is a major fundraiser for the Beechworth Football and Netball Club, having taken over operation of the event from Beechworth Secondary College following a COVID-enforced break.

Club president Adam Fendyk said running the event as part of the popular Golden Horseshoes Festival and the Easter long weekend had seen strong participation at last year’s event.

“Last year’s run was a cracker - we had great participation of approximately 300 people, and we’re keen to grow this in 2023,” he said.

“The feedback from last year’s event was fantastic - the superb weather certainly made the conditions on the day very enjoyable - this event is perfect for individuals and families who want to enjoy the great outdoors, it has something for everyone.”

Having revised the previous course layout which saw runners take on Beechworth Gorge ahead of last year’s iteration, race organiser Alison Maher said the new track had made the event more family friendly.

“It’s a great weekend to hold it being part of the Golden Horseshoes Festival because

“We also have a lot of runners who are local who participate - it’s a busy weekend but also a really good weekend to have it.

“The 3km course around the golf course is really family friendly - kids can run on ahead and there’s no crossing roads or anything like, it’s a well-marked out course.”

A team category is also set to debut this time around, which will see other sporting, community and work groups encouraged to enroll and enter their five fastest times as part of the competition.

AUSTRALIAN and global music star Mitch Tambo will headline live performances at next week’s Golden Horseshoes Festival, in a major coup for the Beechworthbased event.

Renowned as one of the nation’s most unique First Nations entertainers, Mr Tambo’s star has risen in recent years, having performed his single ‘Together’ as part of Eurovision, Australia Decides in February 2020, before closing bushfire relief concert Fire Fight Australia later that month.

Performing ‘You’re the Voice’ alongside John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John and Queen’s Brian May gave way to significant growth, with Mr Tambo featuring at the Australian Open, Rugby World Cup and at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards last year, before performing ‘Silent Night’ at the 2022 Carols by Candlelight at Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

With Mr Tambo set to grace the Camp Street main stage next Saturday afternoon at 12.30pm and 1.45pm, Golden Horseshoes Festival committee member, Ellen Huggins, said the prospect of welcoming the Australian superstar to the North East was an exciting one.

Folk festival attracts thousands

By ANDREA MACKINLAY LAST weekend saw the return of the Yackandandah Folk Festival (YFF) following a COVID-enforced hiatus, and from all reports by the organisers, the performers, the volunteers, and the huge crowd, it was a roaring success.

From humble beginnings some 25 years ago, when initially the YFF was created as an afternoon session in a local pub, featuring 12 local performers to raise money for the Yackandandah Public School, it has now grown into an event where some 55 individual acts entertained the crowd in eight different venues, all within easy access to each other, throughout the two and a half day festival.

Performers from Ireland, the UK, Germany, Canada and all around Australia, and locally, gathered at what several of the acts called one of the best folk festivals in the world.

According to Sarah from the Royal High Jinx, “we’re still buzzing from our spectacular time at the YFF - we had a blast playing music and sharing such fun times with our “folk family”.

“Thanks so much for filling our hearts with such beautiful vibes...it was pure joy,” she said.

The town of Yackandandah, with a population of just over one thousand people, displayed it’s huge heart, and the village atmosphere was incredibly welcoming and laid back as the population swelled with festival

ticket holders.

This year, the festival kicked off earlier, at midday on Friday, with the highlight being the official opening street parade at 6pm.

The Yackandandah Folk Festival app was very helpful in informing patrons on where and when to catch the

performances, and naturally, it was virtually impossible to experience them all.

Many comments from the crowd indicated that there was not one act that disappointed over the whole weekend.

The standard of performances was remarkable.

One of the many highlights of the festival was the Earth Hour concert, held at the town hall on Saturday evening. This took the form of different acts performing one song acoustically, with just LED lights to play by.

Another highlight was the performance by the

Arts Yackandandah Festival Community Choir at noon on Sunday in the Town Hall.

Choir Leader Leonie Brien said, “this year marked the 21st year since the choir began.”

“I have had the pleasure of being involved as a leader then and now, and many years in between.

“This year, after the trials of lockdown, I chose the theme of “Happy Hearts” with songs evoking joy in our community.

“The opening number was written by a regional Victorian woman, Fay White, who said that songs can ‘gentle’ us into remembering that our common humanity extends beyond the boundaries of nation states and governments.

“The High Street Shuffle Band from Yack joined the choir for two songs; “Bike”

by Mal Ward and “Silly Love Songs” by Paul McCartney.

“We finished from the high of these songs with a gentle song from Zimbabwe celebrating the sunset and encouraging it to return tomorrow.”

Performer liaison, Chris Smith, reported 1850 tickets were sold to patrons, around 2,500 tickets were issued to the performers, volunteers, billets and sponsors, plus another 2,000 for the Market on Sunday.

By ANDREA MACKINLAY A STRONG contingent of students, parents and staff of Beechworth Montessori School took part in the National Ride2School Day last Friday.

This event is all about encouraging parents and students to use active travel to get to and from school.

By all accounts, it’s a great way to get in some daily physical activity and to arrive at school feeling more energised and ready to learn.

Over recent years, the number

of students riding to school has dropped to just two out of 10.

In previous years, it was as high as eight out of 10.

Montessori student, 11-year-old Casey Klimpsch enjoyed the ride.

“I live out of town, so I don’t get to ride to school,” she said.

“Mum dropped me off in Last Street this morning, and I really had fun”, she said.

After riding to the school, everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Montessori.

Bicycle Network chief executive officer, Alison McCormack, said

the day afforded students, teachers and parents the opportunity to discover the joy of riding and kick-start healthy habits into the future.

“Riding to school can help students perform better in the classroom,” she said.

“Students who actively travel to school are more awake and alert their concentration levels and understanding of content improves.

“Students who are physically active are happier and healthier they also become more self-sufficient and build resilience.”

BENAMBRA MP Bill Tilley has called for a review of the State Government’s existing funding model for regional sports clubs, which he claims were capped at amounts “that allowed for a lick of paint and a new microwave”.

Speaking in parliament last week following a recent visit to Chiltern Racecourse Recreation Reserve, Mr Tilley said townships such as Rutherglen, Chiltern and Yackandandah were examples of sporting clubs in need of vital assistance.

“The fact is that there is money available through the country football and netball program, but it’s not enough for clubs like Chiltern, Yackandandah, or Rutherglen,” he said.

“Then you have money available to improve female facilities, but if you haven’t got the facilities in the first place, how do you attract the numbers that are needed to get that funding?

“They’ve been playing footy at Chiltern since the gold rush they are the defending premiers in 2023, but the clubrooms are

more like wooden spooners.

“They’ve taken showerheads off a row of showers in the footy y change rooms because there’s not enough water pressure.

“The netball change room is ridiculously small - with 100 girls and women from home and away y sides using it on game day, it only y has two showers.

“The umpires’ room is a dogbox.

There is no disabled toilet, and they clear out the women’s toilets when one is needed.”

Mr Tilley said an additional $1m would be required at Rutherglen’s Barkly Park on top of a $1m election commitment to create meaningful change at the facility.

“They have $1 million on the table in an election commitment, but everyone knows that’s about half what’s needed,” he said.

“The elephant in the room is the fact that this government is out off money - they’re paying $10 million a day in interest on what they’ve borrowed for Melbourne projects.

“That alone would pay for all off these grounds and then some.”

Fire restrictions eased FIRE restrictions throughout Indigo Shire will finish early next week, following recent rainfall and easing of weather conditions across the North East.

The Fire Danger Period (FDP) will finish at 1am on Monday, April 3 throughout Indigo, Alpine, Towong, Wodonga, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek municipalities, although locals are urged to remain alert and prepared in the event of a grassfire over the coming months.

CFA District 24 assistant chief fire officer, Adrian Gutsche, said the risk of fires had been significantly reduced in recent weeks.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bushfire risk areas,” he said.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk.”

Despite the FDP lifting, residents will continue to be urged to register their burn-offs.

“You must register your burnoffs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” Mr Gutsche said.

“Registering your burn-off ensures that if smoke or fire is reported, the incident is cross checked with our register, which prevents firefighters from unnecessarily responding.”

Reinvigorating cultural fire in Victoria’s North East

TRADITIONAL Owners in Victoria’s North East are being supported to conduct cultural burning on Country as part of ongoing work towards Aboriginal self-determination.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) Hume Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Jarrod Hayse, said four Traditional Owner groups will each receive a grant as part of the Cultural Fire Grants.

State-wide, 10 projects will be funded by the $6.3 million program, assisting Traditional Owners to conduct cultural burns across the Victorian landscape.

The grants support Aboriginal Victorians to care for Country through land management and will enhance cultural and environmental values.

Jaithmathang Traditional Ancestral Bloodline Original Owners First Nations Aboriginal Corporation, Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Bangerang Aboriginal Corporation and Taungurung Land & Waters Council will be funded to support cultural burning practices on Country.

Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is investing $22.5 million over four years to support Traditional Owner-led cultural land and fire management practices.

The program contributes to achieving the vision of the Victorian Traditional Owner Cultural Fire Strategy and supports existing partnerships between Traditional Owners and state agencies.

Cultural fire is used

by Traditional Owners to heal Country and fulfil their rights and obligations to care for Country.

Before colonisation, cultural burning was used for a wide range of purposes, including protecting Country, providing habitat for wildlife and the harvesting of resources.

“The grants will enable Traditional Owners to take the lead in cultural burning on Country and reduce bushfire risk in line with the priorities identified within the Victorian Traditional Owner Cultural Fire Strategy,” Mr Hayse said.

“The grants will strengthen existing partnerships with Traditional

Taungurung Land & Waters Council chief executive officer, Matt Burns said the Taungurung people had applied wiinj (fire) and associated practices to biik

“This grant enables the Taungurung people to lead in the healing and caring for biik in ways

that haven’t been possible since the onset of colonisation.

“It’s important for the livelihoods of all Victorians that the right fire is applied to biik again.”

Federal scheme calls for more affordable solar batteries THE cost of household batteries would drop $3000 to $11,500 under a parliamentary bill and scheme to make them more affordable.

INDI MP Helen Haines tabled a bill this week to reduce the cost of home batteries, bringing down both household power bills and emissions.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Bill 2023 would amend the Renewable Electricity Act 2000 to include home batteries in the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

The scheme is responsible for bringing down the cost of solar panels, which are now on a third of Australian households - the highest take up of

rooftop solar in the world.

“This bill will replicate an incredibly successful government program and extend it to battery technology,” Dr Haines said.

“Thirty per cent of Australian households have solar panels but just 1.4pc have home batteries to store this renewable energy.

“We need to make it cheaper and easier to install household batteries.

“This plan would reduce the cost of a $14,500 battery by around $3000.”

The plan, costed at just $3.6 million, reduces stress on the electricity grid, provides energy resilience and helps households take practical ac-

tion on climate change.

“If 500,000 batteries are installed, that’s the equivalent of taking 500,000 cars off the road each and every year,” Dr Haines said.

“Batteries will reduce our power bills, secure our energy supply and reduce our emissions.

“It should be a no-brainer for the government to provide that extra help so households can afford them.”

Dr Haines is also pressuring the government to release details of its package to assist low-income households to transition to take up cheaper and more efficient electrical appliances.

“The government made

the commitment to this package in December but we still haven’t heard any details,” Dr Haines said.

“Around Australia people are looking at their energy bills going up as winter is coming.

“We need to know how the government will help people electrify their homes and move to more efficient and cheaper way to run appliances.

“No-interest loans for lowincome households will make a huge difference.”

How the Cheaper Home Batteries Bill works: • Home batteries would be included as an eligible technology to earn Small-

scale Technology Certificates (STCs) through the SRES. • The amendment would also extend the “deeming rate” - the period for which a home battery can create certificates, which is set at 15 years, until 2027 at which point it is calculated as the number of years until 2041.

• Generally, householders who purchase these systems assign the right to create their certificates to an agent in return for a lower purchase price. The number of smallscale technology certificates required to be submitted by electricity retailers is set each year by the small-scale technology percentage.

Test and connect your smoke alarms AS you prepare to change your clocks this weekend, Victorian fire services want you to take the opportunity to check your smoke alarms and ensure they are in good working condition.

Only working smoke alarms save lives, and that is the message Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) are telling all Victorians as the state turns its clocks back when Daylight Saving ends at 3am on Sunday.

To check your smoke alarm, press ‘test’ and wait for the beeping sound, then each month continue to test, vacuum, and dust your alarm to remove any particles that may affect its performance.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said it is essential that fami-

lies are conducting monthly testing of their smoke alarms to keep their loved ones safe.

“Without a working smoke alarm in all living and sleeping areas of your house, you may not wake if there is a fire,” Mr Heffernan said.

“We know that in the last 10 years, CFA have responded to more than 14,000 residential fires that have caused 490 casualties.

“We want to see that number drop significantly.

“The best way to keep your family safe is to install interconnected smoke alarms, so that when any alarm activates, all smoke alarms will sound, allowing you to evacuate early.

“If you live in a house with more than one level, it’s best to install a smoke alarm on each of

those levels.

“We recommend the use of smoke alarms powered by a 10year lithium battery to ensure their longevity.”

When checking, installing, or replacing your smoke alarms, CFA and FRV recommend: • only working smoke alarms save lives; • the use of smoke alarms powered by a 10-year lithium battery; • smoke alarms must be located between each bedroom area and the rest of the house; • smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom and living area; • smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling at least 30cm from the wall, or installed on the wall at least 30cm from

the ceiling to avoid dead air space; • smoke alarms should be interconnected, so that when any alarm activates, all smoke alarms will sound; • smoke alarms should be tested monthly by pressing the test button on the alarm and waiting for the test alarm to sound; • smoke alarms should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or dusted at least once a year to remove particles that will affect smoke alarm performance; • replaceable batteries in a smoke alarm need to be changed yearly; and • smoke alarms, including those attached to mains power, should be replaced every 10 years.

Swimmers reflect on successful season

By ANDREA MACKINLAY THE BEECHWORTH Swimming Club recently held their annual general meeting and celebrated the end of a successful 2022/23 swim season with a party for their many members at the Beechworth Swimming Pool.

Over the season the club held regular training sessions with a focus on inclusivity and “trying your best”.

Club president, Vanessa Huxley explained, “It’s all about taking part, having fun and enabling our swimmers to be the best they can be, with just a bit of friend-

ly competition with other clubs in our area to make it interesting.”

The club recently competed in the southern division swim pennants of the Ovens and Murray District Swimming Association in Tallangatta.

With a healthy number of juniors participating, the club did well, but a lack of older swimmers made it hard to contest winning the pennants this season. The club hopes to have more senior swimmers next season with some of the juniors moving up into the senior ranks.

At the AGM, Liam Wright was appointed head coach

for the 2023/24 season, to be assisted by Becc West, Trent Sandow and Fran Waterman.

The club also welcomed new swim club captain Jade Lawrence and vice captains Jasmine Horne and Evie Sandow.

Maz Swanson was awarded the Paul McMahon Memorial Trophy for her outstanding contribution to the club over many years, which was presented by Kristy Howard.

LOVE OF FOOD: Beechworth’s David Watson loves creative cooking and seeing happy customers.

Chef’s passion for local produce DAVID Watson was born in the Perth suburb of Subiaco, and moved to Beechworth around the age of four years old. He lived in and around Beechworth until the age of 18, then shifted to far North Queensland where he lived for a stint. In 2014, David returned to Beechworth to be closer to family.

What do you do workwise?

I’m a qualified chef and have been working at Provenance in Beechworth for the last five years.

SUCCESS: The Beechworth Swimming Club performed well at the recent southern division championships at Tallangatta.

What brought you to your role/career?

At the age of 14, I had a part-time job at the Green Shed Bistro (now the Soda Bar) in Camp Street, washing dishes and doing a little bit of cooking. As a kid we never dined out much, so working in a French-inspired bistro introduced me to new cuisine and restaurant dining which appealed to me greatly.

Looking back as well, I would also say my mum’s tastes and use of Eastern ingredients made me interested in cooking.

What do you love about your work?

I love how creative it can be and the positive impact it can have on the community.

For example, using local ingredients will benefit local farmers and greengrocers, their produce always taste better and is better for your health and the local economy.

There’s also something pretty satisfying about cooking local ingredients for a group of friends or family. I also enjoy the pressure in kitchens and when a busy service is executed well, and customers are happy.

What do you do in the community?

I have volunteered for the Beechworth Primary School with school excursions, and being an extra set of hands to help out when it’s needed makes sense to me.

David Watson, Beechworth Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

I have a concern with the housing issue in Beechworth. It seems it is becoming near impossible for families to be able to buy or even find affordable rent in the town. I understand it is a tourist town so prices will always be higher, but if no one can afford to live here, why would you work? It definitely puts the pressure on if you want to live here.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

There are lots of important current world issues that are a cause for concern, but for myself I find the war in Ukraine one of the most pressing. The world doesn’t need violence and displacement like what we are seeing going on there, and the threat of nuclear engagement is a worry for everyone.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

Rene Redzepi from the restaurant Noma, Copenhagen. I would like him to do a pop up restaurant of Noma in Beechworth. I would also show him all the great local produce that is on offer in Beechworth What book are you reading?

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN EXCITEMENT is in the air as football and netball returns for another season in the TDFL and TDNA this weekend, with the Beechworth Bushrangers senior footy side eying a

major scalp in the reigning premiers Chiltern.

After a long pre-season dating back to November 16 which has included practice matches, intraclub games and a pre-season camp to Mount Buffalo, co-coach Tom Cartledge

said the Bushrangers were ready to hit the ground running.

“I think we’re champing at the bit to be honest, it feels like it’s been a long pre-season and after a little hit out against Milawa the other week it brought a

heap of excitement out of the group,” he said.

“It was impressive to see everyone gel quite quickly, some of the new blokes really take the game on and have a crack.”

The Bushrangers are expected to be competing

at the top again this season after surprising most pundits with their preliminary final appearance last year, adding some impressive talent to complement a strong list of returning players.

Cartledge said he expects eight new recruits including the likes of Alek Tsardakis, Tristan Stead and the returning Eaton boys in Lochie, Jordan and Liam to line up for the Bushrangers this weekend.
