Slow it down

INDIGO Shire Council has advocated to Council’s Traffic Liaison committee to have a reduction in the speed limit to 40kph in Beechworth’s central business district.

Wooragee resident Robin McLeish had raised the question about the current situation at last month’s general council meeting as well as following up at council’s meeting on Tuesday night.

“A final decision will be made by the Department of Transport following a rigorous process,” he said.

As a safety issue, Cr Gaffney said residents are also concerned about trucks at the town’s roundabout.

The shire’s infrastructure services director Ian Ellett said changes to speed limits in Beechworth’s CBD were considered and broadly

supported by council’s Traffic Liaison committee The committee comprises council officers as well as staff from Victoria Police and Regional Roads Victoria (Department of Transport).

“The process that follows for this to become an official request for a speed limit change involves a detailed technical analysis using specialist software, and lodging the outcomes and specific request details into a portal,” he said.

“This work is underway by Council staff at present.”

Regional Director (Hume), Department of Transport Steve Bowmaker said the organisation is working with Indigo Shire Council on the proposal to implement safer speed limits across the Beechworth CBD. A spokesperson advised that councils are responsible for submitting speed limit change requests on local roads to the Department of Transport where its road safety team assesses applications.

Three iconic Chiltern properties to be fully open

By CORAL COOKSLEY FRUSTRATED Chiltern tourism members have welcomed a move by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to advertise for a property coordinator for the town’s three historic buildings - Lake View House, Federal Standard Printing Works and Dows Pharmacy.

National Trust executive manager for assets and conservation Sherredan Maher said an advertisement closed last Friday with strong contenders for the position.

Chiltern Tourism member Karin Berrysmith said the significant buildings’ closures off and on through a variety of reasons with the Federal Standard Printing Works shut for the past 18 months had been detrimental in attracting visitors to the town.

“Besides our historical streetscape the three buildings are quite a significant chunk of history,” she said.

Ms Berrysmith said the COVID pandemic had not helped but various reasons had contributed to the ongoing issues of opening times including changes with National Trust coordinators.

But concerns remained about the Trust that manages the buildings not listening to the community’s needs for a coordinator who understands the town’s history as well as being able to relate to the community and its volunteers who have helped run the buildings.

With an advertisement placed in Seek.com and not in local papers, Chiltern’s Tourism member Andrea Wilcox said suitably qualified local people could have missed the advertisement.

Ms Berrysmith said visitors kept ringing and asking when the printing building would be open.

Call for Aussies to register as organ and tissue donors

Delays in opening the Federal Standard Printing building had been compounded with health and safety concerns where an interstate organisation had been contracted for equipment maintenance but still remained untouched.

“We have someone local who can do the job,” Ms Berrysmith said.

Ms Berrysmith had been advised that opening hours for the three buildings during summer months had to be limited due to humidity risks that affected the buildings too.

“A number of volunteers wellconversed in Chiltern’s history were no longer needed as well with reduced times of operations,” she said.

“The shire has been really supportive assisting us working with the National Trust because they see this as an important part of tourism in the North East,” she said.

Ms Berrysmith said it was important for the National Trust to work with local people who understood the history, have the knowledge, networks and community connections which is important to business too.

“Our previous Chiltern coordinator worked hard within the community and we look forward having even more regular and wonderful volunteers again, with teams who can engage visitors at our properties,” she said.

Ms Maher said volunteers needed included customer service, gardeners and tour guides.

“We hope to have the buildings fully open by the end of the year,” she said.

A meeting was held with by National Trust staff, Chiltern stakeholders with shire staff on Wednesday.

THIS week (24-31 July) is Donate Life Week with an awareness campaign in full swing since Sunday to drive up new organ donor registrations to save lives.

One organ donor can save up to seven lives and help many more through eye and tissue donations.

Indigo Shire is among the top five Victorian local government areas (LGAs) with the most people signed up as donors The highest rates of registration are Queenscliffe (48%), Indigo (35%), Surf Coast (35%), Murrindindi (31%) and Nillumbik (31%).

While 2021 was a record-breaking year for new registrations with around 350,000 Australians joining the AODR, up 87 per cent on 2020, there is still more to be done to lift registration rates with a push for this week.

The Great Registration Race for Donate Life Week is on now to encourage 100,000 more Australians to register.

Around 22 per cent of people in the state are registered to be organ donors, a figure below the national average of 36 per cent.

Victoria support organ and tissue donation as a recent poll of 60,000 Australians (ABC Talks 2021) showed four out of five say they would be willing to donate their organs when they die.

Among reasons for the low rate across the State have deemed to be not knowing how to register, people thinking they’re not healthy enough or simply haven’t got around to it.

With around 1750 seriously ill people on Australia’s organ transplant waitlist and another 13,000 people on dialysis who may benefit from a kidney transplant, the demand for organs and tissue has never been greater.

Any Australian aged 16 and over can sign up online register as an organ and tissue donor no matter what age, medical history, lifestyle, what country people hail from or state of health.

Mates’ friendship for life

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN extraordinary friendship has seen two Beechworthians graduate from Melbourne University having both studied the same degrees after travelling through their education journey together from kindergarten.

Riley Goldsworthy and Jude Kennedy attended the local kinder, Beechworth Primary School, Beechworth Secondary College then Melbourne University where they studied a Bachelor of Science with an honours year specialising in biomedicine, and being the best of friends along the way.

Jude, who is now studying medicine at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra to become a doctor, said Riley has been one of his best mates throughout his entire life.

“I remember way back in

primary school Riley would always help me out with math as I would struggle a bit,” he said.

“Fast-forward 13 years when we started at university, he was still sitting next to me in calculus classes helping me.”

Jude said growing up in a small town, having similar aspirations and chasing those who moved to the city together made their friendship special.

“I was so lucky to have one of my best mates right next to me my whole life who always had my back.”

Unsure what he wanted to do when starting his degree, Jude did know he liked science and people.

“I narrowed my options down to undertaking research or medicine, and after doing a year of research at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, even though I thoroughly enjoyed it, the

“Studying medicine has allowed me to explore my curiosity for science while maintaining that human interaction, however, research is still something I would love to integrate into my career.”

“Growing up in the country and then moving to the city for study gave me an appreciation for the need for doctors in rural areas and is something I feel passionate about.

“Practising rurally and giving back to communities like Beechworth which raised me is something I

hope to achieve in the future.”

Riley, who has undertaken a year’s research at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as part of his honours degree, said the pair became great friends in primary school.

“We hung out, played sports and studied together after school, and shared accommodation with some other friends during uni,” he said.

“Although we now live in different cities and don’t see each other that much anymore, we’re still great friends and whenever we catch up, we just pick up where we left off.”

Riley said they had always had the same interests, particularly in biology.

“We individually decided to study science at Melbourne Uni and pursue our honours degrees in biomedicine.

Local teacher inspired years ago by this Sunday’s Kerferd orator

By CORAL COOKSLEY THIS year’s George Briscoe Kerferd Oration guest speaker had been a source of inspiration for a local secondary college teacher around eight years ago.

Innovative education leader and consultant Peter Hutton, who will deliver this year’s Oration on Sunday, had sparked the interest of Beechworth Secondary College teacher Laureen Barnard and a group of other teachers in the leadership team at the time when he had been principal at Templestowe College.

“I was so excited when I heard that Peter would be this year’s Kerferd orator,” Ms Barnard said.

“Peter had been interviewed for an article that I read in The Age about alternative education programs including Montessori at the college.”

“I rang Peter to find out how they ran a Montessori stream in a government high school and he

was very generous with his time where he invited a few of us down including former principal John Hunter.”

“We viewed the opportunity as a great one for the Beechworth community, particularly as we have a Montessori Primary School where there was no Montessori continuation for those students then.”

A proposal for a Montessori model prepared by Ms Barnard presented to all staff as well as the college’s council for program approval was unanimously accepted and funding was approved for the teacher to attend Montessori adolescent training in Cleveland, Ohio.

“A huge commitment from a small school budget but it has paid off immensely for the school,” she said.

While Ms Barnard’s personal interest had been progressive and alternative education, she said the sound strategic decision made to

The young researcher said throughout his studies he became fascinated by life at the molecular and cellular level, particularly in the context of disease.

“The opportunity to study cancer, an overwhelmingly complex and brutal class of disease, is incredibly rewarding,” he said.

“I became a research assistant at Peter Mac to continue to study the molecular complexity of disease and further develop my scientific skills.

“It can be challenging when my experiments don’t always succeed, but I still find the work extremely fulfilling and engaging, and think that I want to continue working in research.”

“When at Templestowe he opened up the possibilities that anything could be achieved where they actually ran many different programs all at once to try and see what would fit and Montessori stayed, but we set up our Montessori program quite differently.”

Ms Barnard said a busy principal of a school under pressure due to declining enrolment at the time, Peter had been brought in to turn it around and while people move on, he left an enormous legacy from his success.

“When I saw that he was speaking, I thought back to that time when energised about doing something new and exciting for our school, and for our community,” she said.

“When you’re passionate about education, I think that you hold on to these gems.”

Auditions for Barefoot in the Park WANGARATTA Players are holding auditions for the upcoming play “Barefoot in the Park” by acclaimed author and playwright Neil Simon this Saturday, July 30 from 2pm at the Stage Door, 4D Evans Street, Wangaratta.

The romantic comedy was Neil Simon’s longestrunning hit, and the tenth-longest running nonmusical play in Broadway history.

It was also made into a highly successful motion picture.

The story of newlyweds Paul – a straight–as–an– arrow lawyer – and Corie – a free spirit – is at times hilarious, poignant and a whole lot of fun as the couple approach life‘s challenges and adjust to married life in their upstairs apartment.

Fiona Evans will be directing the local production with a cast of six required: the young newlyweds, the older mother, an eccentric older male neighbour and two deliverymen.

Lions Junior Public Speaking Competition a great success

EXCITED young primary school students will head to regional competitions after winning their categories in the Beechworth Lions Junior Public Speaking Competition at club level on Sunday at the Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall.

Students from local primary schools - Beechworth, St Joseph’s and Montessori participated.

St Joseph’s student Cleaver won the grade 5 and 6 category with two contestants while Beechworth Primary School student Lily Jobson took out the grade 3 and 4 category competing against three others.

The Lions’ theme for grade 5 and 6 had been a famous person born in the 19th century to which Cleaver delivered an insightful speech about inventor Nikola Tesla known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system.

St Joseph’s principal Carly Avery said Cleaver also had 10 minutes to write a second impromptu speech with a dream job theme

where he spoke about being a pilot in the air force.

The theme for years 3 and 4 grade category was a place they would like to visit to which St Joseph’s student Isabel spoke about Canada.

Ms Avery said St Joseph’s entered this competition for the first time last year and was the first Beechworth school to participate.

“It is fantastic that other local schools entered the competition this year,” she said.

“An opportunity for students to speak publically gives them confidence in so many ways.”

Ms Avery said being part of any community group such as the Lions Club is important for the school.

“In line with our school values we are continually looking for genuine ways to connect and give back to our community,” she said.

“The Beechworth Lions Club is a great example of supporting our local community and providing opportunities such as the public speaking competition.

Lions president John Eldrid said the local club ran the competition for the

first time last year but the program had been running successfully for 15 years in District 201V6.

The District stretches along the mighty Murray River from Quambatook and Kerang in the west to Corryong in the East, and from Lockhart in the north and Bright in the south.

“In 2016 it became a Lions Multiple District project and each year more schools, clubs and districts are becoming involved,” Mr Eldrid said.

“Students enjoy the program and reap the benefits while teachers enjoying the program and make it part of their class curriculum as it includes story writing, research and speaking in front of the class.”

Four competition levels form the overall program with the final one held as a District competition.

Mr Elrid said winners will now represent the Beechworth Lions Club of at the regional competition.

“Parents, family and friends enjoyed the occasion with enthusiastic students speakers,” he said.

“The audience was wowed by the calibre of each speaker.”

Kerferd Oration this Sunday ON Sunday educator Peter Hutton - a maverick, free radical and challenger of the status quo - in education will deliver the George Briscoe Kerferd Oration that marks its 20 year anniversary.

Mr Hutton’s oration is titled “Australian Education: How did we get here and where are we going?”

Rebecca Miles-Keogh answered the question ‘On some measures, Australia is the richest country in the world, yet ranks 30th out of 38 for education equity. How can equity be improved at all levels of education?’

E

ducational equity is a hugely complex issue in Australia, and we are now seeing the outcome of successive governments where the funded model of the education system has further exacerbated inequality. While there are a multitude of things that can be done to improve equity in education at all levels, the following are two big areas that need action and support from our wider Australian society.

1. Fund public schools on a needs-based model There have been some strong shifts in improving educational equity in education in Australia, most notably the Gonski review (and the follow-up Gonski 2.0) which was released a decade ago.

In his review of school funding, Gonski highlighted five key areas of educational disadvantage that have a strong impact on education outcomes - low socio-economic status, Indigeneity, English language proficiency, disability and remoteness.

Gonski’s solution was to address the way that schooling is funded in order toimprove educational outcomes for all students.

While theneeds-based funding model proposed through the Gonski review was seen as providing a clear way to improve equity in education, unfortunately this funding model was only partially implemented by the then Gillard Labour government.

Subsequent governments have further watered down the possibilities of the GonskiReview - indeed, in the past few years we’ve seen a greater proportion of government education funding going to private and independent schools then to public schools, despite public schools educating 80 per cent of the students who experience disadvantage.

As the current funding model agreement is due to expire in December 2023, now is the time that we can support our schools and teachers by fighting for a fairer funding model, particularly in public schools, that addresses educational disadvantage in Australian schools.

This has been documented in numerous research studies as key in improving the education outcomes of our children and young people.

play-based learning that, again, research has shown conclusively, is important in addressing educational disadvantage.

However, early childhood education is expensive and affordable case can be difficult to access.

Early childhood teachers are low-paid, despite the qualifications required to work in the industry, and the important role that they have in children’s early development - an issue also of gender inequality given the high proportion of early childhood staff who are women.

Like the school system,

there are huge staffing shortages in early childhood education and this will lead to a compounding of problems unless funding is improved.

There is a planned strike on September 7, on Early Childhood Educators Day, so support educational equity by supporting our early childhood educators and demand better pay and conditions.

While much of what can be done to improve educational inequity is linked to governments and funding, at an individual level there is much we can do to support the people who are working at all levels of education. As

noted, this might be through contacting members of parliament, Education ministers and those who make decisions about funding and policy in governments to let them know that we care how our education system is treated.

Importantly, participating in collective action to show support and demand change is an important show of solidarity that we can also join.

To end with some words from the Gonski Review: “... differences in educational outcomes are not the result of differences in wealth, income, power or possessions.

Equity in this sense does not mean that all students are the same or will achieve the same outcomes.

Rather, it means that all students must have access to an acceptable international standard of education, regardless of where they live or the school they attend” (Review of Funding for Schooling - Final Report, 2011, p. 105).

Empowering young girls

By CORAL COOKSLEY A CHANCE to be in a personal development program with a grant from the local pharmacy came up trumps for nine-year old Alba Almeida.

The youngster had recently undertaken a program offered by former teachers Stanley’s Danielle Bell and Beechworth’s Katja Shoenfelder who teamed up to offer courses to empower young girls with confidence, as well as build emotional and mental resilience.

Alba was one of two young people supported with grants from Beechworth Pharmacy to participate in the ‘Roots and Wings’ two day non-residential retreat for girls.

Beechworth Pharmacy’s Ruth Parker said it is important for the pharmacy to provide support to these local programs that enrich the lives of young people.

“I think sometimes the cost can be prohibitive for some families and the program is aimed at young girls to empower them to reach

their full potential and give them the opportunity to feel connected to others,” she said.

“The pharmacy is very pleased to be able to give back to the community as we feel very connected and supported by our community.”

“I was pleased to receive feedback from the girls that we sponsored to attend and that they and their families benefited from their attendance as part of the ‘Wholehearted’ programs for girls.

Alba said she really liked

the program especially the social aspects and where the group talked about interesting things.

“I liked pretty much everything we did together and I would love to participate in another one,” she said.

Danielle said positive connections through activities and insights that emerge from the program help the girls learn key elements of healthy relationships.

“Beechworth Pharmacy generously sponsored two girls for the autumn retreat and they would not have had

the financial means to participate in the program otherwise,” she said.

“Their parent said the program had been beneficial for them as they learned more about themselves, became more confident about who they are and made really positive, lovely connections with other girls.”

Programs focus on movement-based practices such as dance and yoga known to support emotional and mental wellbeing, positive body image and general health and vitality.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Beechworth heritage inextricably linked to transport history RE: Minutes-Indigo Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee-22 June 2022 I have just read attachment 3 (Minutes-Indigo Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee-22 June 2022) of the council agenda for 26/07/2020 and am quite perplexed as to how a committee of ‘experts’ could possibly come to the following conclusion: “Committee members pointed out that carriages and 19th century transport are not core heritage values of Beechworth, and that Beechworth would never

become a destination that drew people for this reason.’’

Beechworth as we know it would never have existed if it were not for the communication and transport revolution that took place in the later half of the nineteenth century.

Several events were core to the development of Beechworth: • The Gold Rush of the 1850s.

• The coming of the telegraph in 1858 linking the town to the outside world through the medium of Morse Code. It was the internet of its day.

• Horse drawn transport including stagecoaches, carriages and freight wagons and the creation of a road network.

• The arrival of the railway in 1876 physically linking Beechworth to the rest of Victoria.

Thousands of people turned out

for the grand opening. It would have been the equivalent of a jumbo jet landing in the town.

Before the railway a journey to Melbourne could take days if not weeks. From 1891 to 1954 the Beechworth branch line extended to Yackandandah.

The transport and communication revolution of the nineteenth century were fundamental to the development of Beechworth, Victoria and Australia.

Beechworth grew and prospered after the boom created by the Gold Rush because of its communication and transport links while many other gold towns withered and died.

The carriage collection currently housed at Billsons Brewery is an extremely valuable

part of that history and as such should be preserved in total in Beechworth where it has been for many years. It has suffered from neglect over the years.

There have been offers from many locals to help in its restoration.

The refurbished Goods Shed in the Beechworth Railway Precinct would be an excellent location for the collection.

After all it was once located on that site.

The Goods Shed and the area around it could become the basis for an historical transport museum celebrating the horse drawn vehicles, the railway, and the motor car, all of which were central to Beechworth’s development as a major regional centre.

Chiltern artist delivers insights into award-winning career

Gun storage laws set to change FIREARM owners are being urged to prepare for changes to firearm storage requirements from August 30, with new legislation to be imposed on all licensed firearm owners.

From August 30, Category A and B longarms must be stored in a purpose-built steel storage receptacle that: • is of a thickness of at least 1.6mm which complies with Australian/New Zealand standard 1594:2002 (as amended from time to time); • if the receptacle weighs less than 150kg when it is empty - must be bolted to the structure of the premises where the firearm is authorised to be kept; and • is locked with a lock of sturdy construction when the firearm is stored in it.

Also from August 30, Category C and D longarms and general category handguns must be stored in a purposebuilt steel storage receptacle of the aforementioned specifications.

The new receptacles will be expected to be purposebuilt for the storage of firearms, with those licence holders currently storing their firearms in bolted clothing lockers or hardwood receptacles encouraged to begin making plans to upgrade.

Police are anticipating high-demand for commercially made gun safes, and outlined discretion may be granted to owners who attempt to proactively upgrade their storage before August 30, as long as proof of purchase is provided.

LSC Auhl said police will be carrying out regular checks at the premises of licence holders over the coming months to ensure owners have addressed their storage compliance.

Licence holders are urged to avoid keeping firearms at vacant properties or holiday homes, which can become the target of theft, as these properties do not meet safety requirements and standards.

LSC Auhl also warned gun owners not to leave tools lying around in the vicinity of any storage receptacle but to make sure they are locked away to prevent them being used in a theft or break-in.

He said it was important

to secure the safe keys in a room separate to the room the firearms are secured to make it more difficult for firearms to be stolen.

“Offenders will often look for soft targets and take advantage by stealing firearms,” he said.

“You should also store ammunition in a separate locked container.

“Remember - if your guns are stolen due to your lack of care and attention, you may be charged with offences that carry heavy fines and you may be deemed ‘not fit and proper’ and have your licence cancelled.”

With the changes set to impact Category A and B licence holders in particular, more than 80 per cent of the total registered firearms throughout the state which are registered against these licences are expected to be subject to the new storage requirements.

AWARD-winning Chiltern-based artist Kirrily Anderson presented a fascinating account of her journey as an artistic creative at a Mayday Hills Art Society’s (MDHAS) regular talk on Sunday, July 17.

Kirrily grew up in regional NSW, studied graphic design where she then freelanced in Melbourne, became a visual artist and street artist and moved to Chiltern five years ago.

The artists spoke about how her career had progressed regionally too.

With a love of drawing from a young age as well as having many creative interests, the well-known local artist said she felt incredibly fortunate to be able to create her works for a living.

“It has been hard work over many years to get here, but it is very rewarding, especially having the opportunity to work in the public space and share art with communities through murals,” she said.

“I really love to create work that provokes thought around the spaces we live in, specifically our natural environment.”

“Public art is a great way to share a message and share knowledge, and this happens both through the finished work and even more so during the creation, where I am

able to learn from specific people in a community, and then share that knowledge more broadly when people talk to me as I am painting.”

“My studio work is ink and watercolour on paper with murals created with acrylic paint.”

Among favourite artworks are her recent body of work in response to the Black Summer fires and the effect they had on National Parks and communities in North East Victoria - Alpine Ash and Mountain Plum Pine.

“I love creating on this scale with so much detail,” she said.

MDHAS founder Christine Cansfield-Smith said Kirrily’s development of her art form, particularly street art, throughout her career as well as her technique to undertake these types of commissions had been fascinating.

“I think the audience grasped Kirrily’s passion and enthusiasm for her art form,” she said.

“Highlights of her talk had been showing us large street art projects that have been completed as well as photos from her last exhibition held at MAMA in December last year.”

Kirrily has exhibited and curated both in Australia and internationally.

Her work locally has focused on public art, installing murals for a number of local councils, schools, festivals and businesses.

THE Wangaratta Art Gallery will celebrate the launch of the Spark Bushfire Recovery Project exhibition and virtual reality film Bitja Wokka (Fire Country) at the gallery this weekend.

Bitja Wokka, meaning Fire Country in Bpangerang language, explores local Indigenous Bpangerang culture and Indigenous relationships to Caring for Country.

The gallery commissioned PHORIA, a world leading immersive tech studio that specialises in cutting edge virtual augmented and mixed reality technology, to create the film.

It’s the first of its kind in Australia, sharing cultural burning practices and indigenous stories in an immersive virtual reality experience, while highlighting the role those practices can have in reducing fire threat and maintaining a healthy environment for all.

Wangaratta Art Gallery’s bushfire recovery officer Annie Brien said Bitja Wokka shares Bpangerang stories and culture and showcases the beauty of our region and our need to care for it.

“It’s very beautiful and creates a real sense of awe for our home,” she said.

The gallery will launch the film as part of a four-day exhibition curated alongside artwork and experiences to capture an overview of the Spark bushfire recovery Program.

The opening will be held tonight from 5.30pm to 7.30pm with a Welcome to Country by local Bpangerang elder Uncle Darren Atkinson.

Luke loves volunteering to help out Luke McLennan LUKE McLennan was born in Swan Hill, the biggest town around that district with his parents hailing from Nullawil and Culgoa - little Mallee towns in regional Victoria.

He has lived in Stanley for exactly one year, moving up from Yackandandah during the COVID pandemic.

“It snowed the day we moved into our little iron clad house right in the village,” he said.

What’s your job?

I am an accountant, but not an average one.

I run a business called The Wandering CFO and we predominantly work with small business owners, helping them control their books, improve their profit and grow their business.

Essentially, we work as a part of their team from inside their business.

What brought you to this role?

I worked for many years in the big city for a privately owned, international multimillion dollar company.

I also spent many years travelling and living in remote places around the world.

I became interested in the resilience and strength of small and often struggling communities in the face of big development- in particular Indigenous communities in the Amazon fighting oil companies and dirty government deals.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

The shortage of accommodation for people who do not own a home.

We cannot expect our community to thrive if we do not provide affordable, clean and secure housing options for our young people, the elderly and those on low incomes or difficult circumstances.

A healthy community is inclusive and supportive of everyone.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

There needs to be more affordable housing if we are going to keep our families that grew up here in our communities and not forced elsewhere.

The rentals go to the highest bidder in this beautiful place.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Climate change and the fall out it brings like food security, loss of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Economically, if we are to successfully navigate our future, our economic structure needs to drastically change.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

Canadian-American singer, guitarist, songwriter and filmmaker Neil Young.

We’d go for a bushwalk taking his guitar and listen to the old sounds out there.

Why would you do that?

It’s our responsibility as humans to listen. Just shut up and listen to mother nature. I reckon he would like that.

What book are you reading?

‘The Good Life’ by ABC Gardening Australia presenter Hannah Moloney.

Beechworth are equal for points in third with Barnawartha and Cartledge said it’s going to take his team’s best efforts to come out of the game outright third.

“We’re going to put our best side out on the park,” he said.

“We’ll go in as strong as we possibly can and confident that whoever we field can get the job done.”
