INDIGO Shire Council has advocated to Council’s Traffic Liaison committee to have a reduction in the speed limit to 40kph in Beechworth’s central business district. Wooragee resident Robin McLeish had raised the question about the current situation at last month’s general council meeting as well as following up at council’s meeting on Tuesday night. He said advocacy for the change had been well received and supported. “A final decision will be made by the Department of Transport following a rigorous process,” he said. As a safety issue, Cr Gaffney said residents are also concerned about trucks at the town’s roundabout. The shire’s infrastructure services director Ian Ellett said changes to speed limits in Beechworth’s CBD were considered and broadly
supported by council’s Traffic Liaison committee The committee comprises council officers as well as staff from Victoria Police and Regional Roads Victoria (Department of Transport). “The process that follows for this to become an official request for a speed limit change involves a detailed technical analysis using specialist software, and lodging the outcomes and specific request details into a portal,” he said. “This work is underway by Council staff at present.”
Regional Director (Hume), Department of Transport Steve Bowmaker said the organisation is working with Indigo Shire Council on the proposal to implement safer speed limits across the Beechworth CBD. A spokesperson advised that councils are responsible for submitting speed limit change requests on local roads to the Department of Transport where its road safety team assesses applications. ■ Continued page 2
