People’s exhibition opens LINKING past history with today’s modern vibrant community has been at the heart of an innovative exhibition where 10 residents have been matched with historical people and collections. An official opening for the ‘People of Beechworth’ exhibition last Saturday drew a large crowd to see the unique showcase where people have been recorded in history for the future. Manager of the Burke Museum and cultural heritage, Cameron Auty said the exhibition will change over time. He said every-so-often new people and new stories

will be featured to ensure the exhibition stays fresh by the ongoing recording and preservation of important community stories. “We don’t want people with their stories to miss out,” he said. Mr Auty said the opportunity to undertake the project arose when Indigo Shire Council had been made aware of the Australian Government’s ‘Bushfire Tourism Recovery Initia-

tives Program’ where projects could be designed to reflect on, and strengthen community resilience after the disruption of the 2020 fires. “For the Burke Museum, one of our goals is to connect the modern community with stories from the past,” he said. “At council we want to strengthen our bond with the community, and this exhibition presented a wonderful opportunity for us to do just that.” “Our Historic Precinct Masterplan identified the need for contemporary in-

terpretations of historic stories to drive visitation and we want to use the beautiful heritage spaces of the Precinct as the backdrop for powerful visions of history and community.” Mr Auty said the ‘Pioneers Board’ on display in the museum sparked his interest in untold stories from that time. “I wanted to balance those photos with an inclusive exhibition that showed the full community now and recorded their stories for the future,” he said. Mr Auty said the Burke Museum team has had a

chance to do something fresh and innovative in a special museum. “We wanted to bring a powerful visual experience into the space to show audiences its potential and for the community it is a reflection that it’s their museum,” he said. “Beechworth is a vibrant, diverse and fascinating community and residents can now see themselves reflected in their museum.” “We also wanted to show that history doesn’t stop at 1880 - it’s being made every day.” ■ Continued page 2 4%

When it comes to votes on new laws I have voted HTXDOO\ with the Coalition and opposition. The Coalition is trying to mislead you by conflating votes on legislation with motions to shut down debate. These are called gag motions.

I vote against gag motions almost all the time. Freedom for MPs to speak in Parliament is core to our democracy. When the Government puts up good laws, I back them. When they put up bad laws, I oppose them. 7KDW V P\ MRE DV DQ ΖQGHSHQGHQW 7KH SHRSOH RI ΖQGL GLGQ W YRWH IRU D UXEEHU VWDPS Authorised by Helen Haines 117 Murphy St Wangaratta VIC 3677
