and community organisations, with a focus on overall precinct development concerning the Old Railway Goods Shed and railway station.

With the Old Railway Goods Shed part of a big-

ger picture, Mr Ierino said all precinct activities would need to complement each other for precinct revitalisation.

The Beechworth Railway Precinct Management Land Management Plan, including the strategic vision for the area, had been adopted by council in mid2019 following community consultation around the

same time as the Old Railway Goods Shed’s refurbishment neared completion.

Mr Ierino said strong interest shown in the precinct development in 2019 had since declined, with attempts by council to seek further interest during COVID-19 and around 12 months ago receiving little response.

Council has linked the lack of interest to lower business confidence as a result of COVID-19 impacts.

“With the economy emerging from the worst of the pandemic, and business confidence returning, we can now look towards seeking new expressions of interest in the site,” Mr Ierino said.

From page 1 “There’s nothing in the plan that says precinct development needs to be a commercial operation - it can be a community-based group undertaking the vision.

The CEO said the plan’s strategic vision is to develop a vibrant and activated recreation and tourism product, which values, protects and acknowledges overall historical site significance.

“Any proposals for future development that fits into that vision would be considered,” he said.

While waiting for business and investment confidence to return to the market, Mr Ierino said a grant opportunity had recently arisen which could contribute to the precinct’s development.

“We’re working on that opportunity and if it comes off it will really help us to invest in that site and we can go out to the market again,” he said.

“If someone came up with an opportunity and involved the Old Railway Goods Shed that could include the some of the carriages and meets the vision and activated the precinct space, then there’s no reason why that can’t happen.

“But it needs to be backed with a good feasibility study and business plan.”

The National Trust would also need to be supportive, given the carriages are under their ownership and stewardship.

“The carriages need to be maintained, displayed and have people on hand to look after the display, including security.”

Mr Ierino said the precinct is on crown land, with developments managed on behalf of the Department of Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

YOUNG people from around town had fun with a spooky difference for crafty creations made throughout the week at Quercus Beechworth for Halloween next Monday.

Community engagement coordinator Jess Oldmeadow said rocks had been painted with colourful Halloween characters and scary ones too.

“Anyone can come and participate in the Halloween activities - it’s not just for young people,” she said.

“It’s been a great way for the community to connect and do something fun in painting rocks.

“There is still an opportunity today for anyone who would like to join in for a session from 3pm to 4.30pm in the Quercus garden.

“For anyone who decorates a rock, they can take as many as they like home, but what we ask is for each one taken, they leave one for us for a rock hunt.

“We’re hiding Halloween rocks around Beechworth on Monday for community members to find.”

Jess said photos could be taken to be shared on Facebook or Instagram, with hashtags too.

“It’s a way for everyone in the community to have fun together,” she said.

“And it’s an alternative to trick or treating and might extend for a little longer than just

Flooding over in a flash Torrential downpours isolate and damage roadways y in the short-term

By RYAN MALCOLM A TORRENTIAL downpour which saw almost 100mm of rain fall in a matter of minutes on the North East earlier this week has further damaged road infrastructure already under pressure.

Reports of between 60 and 90mm of rain were recorded in isolated parts of the region on Tuesday evening, with Beechworth and Yackandandah copping the brunt of a storm which lasted little more than half an hour.

Beechworth SES unit controller Charles Dean said he expected roadways throughout the region would offer dangerous conditions for motorists in the short-term.

“It was a really, really heavy fast fall - with all the catchments being saturated, the water had nowhere to go, and that’s exactly what it did,” he said.

“The areas which were hardest hit were the areas between Beechworth, Chiltern and Wooragee, but there was some flooding in Beechworth itself because of the intensity of the rain.

“There’s no way any drain system is going to cope with that sort of thing, especially

with all that’s happened (in recent weeks).

“There’s certainly potholes developing in several roads it’s a case of over the next little while unitl the shire has some kind of chance to catch up - to really drive with care and if you see a pothole ahead, avoid it, because they can be really dangerous.”

Mr Dean said a single stretch of Beechworth-Chiltern Road between Woolshed Road and Reeds Way had quickly become inundated on Tuesday evening, with floodwater spanning as much as 30m overtopping the road and downing a large tree in the process.

He said gravel roads in the region may have also been washed away in the deluge, which personally saw him trapped at the base of his own driveway.

“When it hit I was bringing my son back from the school bus and I had to park outside my gate and my wife had to come down in the 4WD and bring my SES gear with her, because I couldn’t drive up our driveway,” he said.

“And then I was straight out on the job, and the job was only 100m up the road from me.”

He said the downpour, which

Letters to the editor Ongoing transparency key for council AT their meeting on October 25th Indigo Sire Councillors approved Item14.1 on the agenda - Public Transparency Policy 2.0. The details can be found on page 80 of the April meeting agenda: https://www.indigoshire.vic.gov.au/Council/ Council-Meetings/Agendas-and-minutes Council officers claimed that Indigo Shire is one of the most open and transparent councils in Victoria. It was also stated that almost all Freedom of Information (FOI) requests were granted, usually at little or no cost to the applicant, depending on the complexity of the request. There are also avenues of appeal should a FOI request be denied.

On the surface this appears to be a very admirable and democratic policy. However, as they say, “the proof is in the pudding.” Indigo

Shire residents interested in the transparency, openness, and accountability of Council should read what was approved and monitor the implementation of this policy.

ANIMAL lovers can have portraits of their pets taken by a Beechworthian professional then framed at a novel Mayday Hills Art Society (MDHAS) art exhibition and open weekend.

The event, set to be held on November 5 and 6 from 10am to 4pm, is a fundraiser for a Bali dog adoption rehabilitation centre founded by visiting artist and exhibitor Linda Buller.

A fascinating talk will be given by the Melbourne-based creative about her love of art combined with her passion of saving dogs in the Indonesian province at the exhibition opening on Friday, November 4 at 5pm.

Linda is well known for her amazing abstract paintings, landscapes that connect her with the earth, as well as her poetic figurative works of dogs, places and people.

A planned two-year trip to Bali turned into a two decade-long stay.

“When I saw the suffering of the dogs, I just knew I had to do something about it,” she said.

“I came back to Australia to finish an acupuncture Chinese medicine diploma and made plans to return to set up a dog refuge.

“I decided that I would stay there for two years and then I would leave it to the Balinese people to run it and continue to rescue the poor suffering animals but remained there for the next 20 years.”

Linda said the centre had ongoing challenges but managed to stay above water to

bring in enough funds every month to pay wages, buy food and maintain the refuge.

“It’s been very hard over the last three years due to the coronavirus and we’ve lost a lot of our supporters,” she said.

The artist said she found paint and a paintbrush to express herself with artwork.

“On canvas I use oil paint and acrylic, sand and dirt and any material I think might look or feel good, and I love experimenting with all types,” she said.

MDHAS founder Christine CansfieldSmith said with the connection to Linda as an artist to give a talk, it seemed like the perfect time to help with the Bali program, where an art exhibition could be organised at the same time.

“Volunteers can go to Bali and work at the centre for a short period of time too,” she said.

“Linda welcomes volunteers, and you can have a working holiday and stay in her house in Ubud.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to come along and hear Linda’s talk, see the exhibition and enjoy the activities over the weekend where all proceeds will go to the centre.”

While the weekend offers an art exhibition and snaps of any pets, there will be tours around the arts society’s premises, and pet raffle prizes and refreshments.

Learning lessons from Anne Frank

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN ANNE Frank exhibition travelling around Australia since 2015 is on show from today for three months at the Beechworth Town Hall.

The exhibition is part of a new generation of travelling exhibitions around the world “Let Me Be Myself - The Life Story of Anne Frank” by the Anne Frank House in the Netherlands where exhibitions have reached more than 10 million people in

80 countries.

The exhibition tells the story of the young Jewish girl Anne Frank from her birth in 1929 up to her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.

During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in WW2, Anne and her family were forced into hiding to escape persecution, where they hid behind a bookcase in a secret annex for two years until Anne was found.

Anne kept a diary while

in hiding, which was later published by her father.

Beechworth’s Jerun Terlaak was behind bringing the exhibition to town, and said Anne’s diary is relevant in today’s world.

“Her book is one of the most famous in the world, still read and we can learn a lot from it,” he said.

“If you look at what’s happening in Ukraine as well as today’s young people with challenges they face, it’s a very applicable story.

“Part of the exhibition is

dedicated to young people who have had to deal with bullying and discrimination.”

Jerun said the story has a powerful message for people today about the importance of upholding human rights and fighting racism.

“It’s a chance for people to reflect and see if there is a way they can contribute a little bit to a better world,” he said.

Olinda-based executive manager and curator Iet Fuijkschot with her hus-

band Freek represent the Anne Frank House in Australia, with Iet taking the exhibition around the nation.

Iet said nothing had changed over the years with wars such as in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“I don’t think anyone has learned a lesson,” she said.

The curator said she hoped exhibition visitors will be impressed with how Anne Frank expressed her feelings in her diary.

“Julie Taylor, the musical director, worked with the band and the cast on the musical portions and together, all did their part to make this a memorable show,” they said.

Plans for CLAP’s next production are already underway, however, both directors noted they would have a tough act to follow.

Musical talent to be showcased

By CORAL COOKSLEY A TALENTED young Yackandandah musician will entertain crowds at the reconvened open house being held by the town’s community centre next Friday.

Yackandandah locals have the chance to hear about the Centre’s exciting new developments as well as listening to 12-year-old guitarist, singer and songwriter Jack Gregory.

Making his mark in the country music scene already, Jack’s dream to be a well-known country music artist is shaping up.

He sets off to compete in the Australian National Busking Championships grand final in Cooma next month after winning the regional busking heats at Kilmore and Rutherglen in the junior section earlier this year.

“I’m absolutely pumped and can’t wait,” Jack said.

The young musician has played at The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival in Corryong - a town where he loves to play, busking in the street and entering the bush idol sponsored by Megas Music.

With his own song ‘Big Fish’ recorded and soonto-be another ‘Fishing from Heaven’, Jack plans

to have the CD ready to sell at Tamworth’s Country Music Festival in January next year.

“I’m pretty excited to have my songs recorded, and hope everyone enjoys them,” he said.

Practicing every night with music lessons once a week in Wodonga while balancing his school commitments, Jack said he makes it all work.

“But I do write some lyrics on the back of my school books when the teachers are not looking if a good idea comes to my mind,” he said.

Yackandandah Community Centre (YCC) manager David Thorpe said staff will talk about significant operational changes and the building in recent years.

“Our open house is a great opportunity to showcase the centre, for

people to find out more and have their questions answered,” he said.

Running for 37 years, YCC - a member of the Upper Murray Regional Neighbourhood House Network - has been an important part of the community in providing a range of educational opportunities.

Mr Thorpe said the centre also has an active role in community development with a number of initiatives, among them annual community grants, funded by the Op Shop distributed to Yackandandah community groups.

These funds have also provided facility upgrades and services such as new audio-visual equipment in the centre’s meeting room.

“The open house will be a perfect opportunity for people to hear how our grants have benefited a wide range of Yack community groups,” he said.

Mr Thorpe said people will hear more about the grants and developing collaborative projects with Yack organisations at the evening.

YCC’s open house with a sausage sizzle too, is on Friday, November 4 at 29 High Street, Yackandandah from 5pm.

Chiltern Courthouse showcases history

By CORAL COOKSLEY A HISTORY research project telling fascinating tales of ‘Law and Order in the Chiltern Police District” from colonial times to present day has come to fruition, with an exhibition in the Chiltern Courtw house to be held on the first weekend of November.

Among stories shown on fourteen interpretive panels include the gold rush, Chiltern’s first magistrate William Gaunt, the life of a policeman and catching the crooks, and tales of women in the court.

Others include Indian and Afghan hawkers, noted author, lawyer and champion of women’s rights Wilfred Busse, Chiltern’s connection to the Kelly Story, and the list of police officers who served.

The three-and-a-half-year project received $7,000 in funding from the Public Record Office of Victoria Local History Grants Program as well as an Indigo Shire Council Community Grant of $3,000 with additional costs covered by Court House funds.

A tourism boost for the Chiltern, projject co-ordinator Lois Hotson said visits to the courthouse will draw crowds when events are held in the town as well as attract members of local and regional communities.

“Other interested people will include school groups, seniors’ groups and the display will add to the Chiltern Athenaeum town walks,” she said.

“It will also showcase and preserve our heritage in a very authentic building while telling stories of a colourful past.” w The old lockup at the rear of the Court House will also be open, where stories can be heard about Chiltern’s history.

NE boost for state markets The Victorian Farmers’ Markets Association (VFMA) has appointed Beechworth’s Peter Kenyon as its new executive officer.

Peter joined the VFMA team in May last year as the organisation’s new field officer, engaging producers and managers at markets, visiting farms and promoting the organisation’s goals and work.

He supported producers and the association during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep its farmers’ markets open and build awareness about climate change impacts on small-scale farming.

VFMA president Chris Hain, from Castlemaine, said the association - with its 33 accredited markets in regional and metropolitan Victoria - was delighted to have Peter leading its team.

“He brings enormous experience and insight from a career in food and political advocacy that will underpin our plans for the VFMA’s future,” Chris said.

“Peter was a leader in the certified organic retail sector in NSW, and ran an award-winning, specialist grocery store in Sydney’s northern suburbs, before moving to Beechworth in North East Victoria.

“He also brings experience in public health promotion and as a project and policy adviser to former Indi federal independent MP, Cathy McGowan.”

Peter said food influenced lives in unexpected ways every day.

“What we choose to grow, buy and eat, where we get it and how we think about food and where it comes from shapes the world we live in,” Peter said.

“Diverse, small-scale food and wine and the people who produce it are so often at the heart of our communities.

Beechworth resident brings green plans to Benambra campaign

CAMPAIGN BEGINS: Beechworth local Luke Brady will run for the seat of Benambra at next month’s state election.

BEECHWORTH local and engineer-bytrade Luke Brady will represent The Greens in the seat of Benambra at next month’s election.

Set to launch his campaign at Beechworth Conservatory on Sunday afternoon between 1 and 3pm, Mr Brady said he hoped to champion integrity and accountability for the local region, with an eye to addressing rising costs of living, housing unavailability and unaffordability locally.

With a strong stance on addressing climate change a key focus of his campaign, Mr Brady said Benambra residents were acutely aware of its impacts throughout the region.

“The Greens will push the government to tackle climate change and environmental degradation to create long-term solu-

tions that preserve the beautiful high country and river systems that are iconic features of our region,” he said.

“Our region urgently needs a response to the lack of affordable and available housing - The Greens will build more affordable homes, end out-ofcontrol rent rises, and ban political donations from property developers.”

Living in Beechworth with his partner Rachel and his two adopted greyhounds, Mr Brady said he was excited by the opportunity to connect with North East communities in the coming weeks, to further outline The Greens’ plan for a more sustainable society.

IAN Fetherstonhaugh was born and raised in Melbourne and has lived in Beechworth since 1997, when he arrived with his wife Robyn and their young son Matthew.

“We welcomed our second son James to the beautiful Beechworth lifestyle two years later,” he said.

What have you done in your working career?

Robyn and I recently retired from running the Beechworth Pantry after 19 very productive years. Overall, I have spent the last 50 years working in hotels, restaurants and hospital catering management including our own business. As I’m now retired, there’s no job at present but I’m happy pursuing casual work for up to three days a week.

What brought you to your career roles?

A love of hospitality where I took up tertiary studies in hospitality management that led to so many years working in the industry. I came to Beechworth with Robyn and Matthew to take up a position as Beechworth Bakery’s manager for Tom and Christine O’Toole. I spent a very rewarding five years there, then with Robyn we decided to open our own business.

What did you love about your hospitality jobs?

Dealing with so many interesting people and in our Beechworth business having many wonderful customers over the years but now I’m enjoying retirement.

What do you do in the community?

Not a lot due to our business commitment and family time with activities such as sport.

I used to enjoy social competitive tennis in Beechworth and ferrying my boys around to football and tennis competitions. I might pick up a tennis racquet again. Next year with more free time, I plan to keep active with some voluntary work and joining the Men’s Shed is on the horizon. It’s a great way to give back in contributing to community projects.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Housing for rental - unfortunately not everyone can own their own house but there needs to be more rental options for people to work and enjoy the tree change that we all do.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

It’s up to local, state and federal governments to make some necessary changes.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Have more than one - Ukraine, Tibet, Russia and China.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

United States President Joe Biden. I would showcase our heritage town as well as our region’s produce and wine and take him to Beechworth’s Pennyweight Winery to sample their organic wines - my favourite!

Why would you show him that?

To show him the great town we live in and why so many people are making the tree change out of our overcrowded cities. Having president Biden here would certainly generate some great publicity for Beechworth!

What book are you reading?

‘Little Women’ to test my knowledge to get on ABC Hard Quiz with Tom Gleeson. None of the movies hold a candle to the books and the back story of American author Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888).

Teeing off in the twilight

By DYLAN POOL LAST Thursday it was great to finally have a nice day for twilight golf.

There were 18 players who fronted up for nine holes on a composite course.

In what was his first game of Twilight golf, Dean Howard returned the best score with a great score of 39/9.5/29.5.

Jason West was runner up with 40/8.5/31.5 and took home the The George Kerferd hotel voucher.

Ball winners were Dylan Pool 32, John Sheehan 33.5, Jamie Dolny 34, Steve Piddington 34.5 and Josh Carr 34.5.

Dylan Pool took home the Beechworth Bakery voucher for nearest the pin on the 10th, Josh Carr claimed nearest the pin on the 7th and Greg Conway took home the six pack for nearest the pin on the 17th donated by Alpine Indigo Accounting.

Brian Cropley won the cash with the nearest chip on the 9th.

After someone had prematurely thrown out the raffle tickets, Rod Shaw won the raffle with

the closest ticket to the top of the bin.

A mention to Tony Stockdale who we believe became the first person to hit the new footy scoreboard with his tee shot on the 16th.

On Sunday there was only a small field for an ambrose event which was played on the full course.

The winners were Jacob Howard and Dylan Pool with 69.75, runners up were Zane and Dean Howard with 71.75 and third were Jamie Dolny and Andy Croome with 72.

Jamie Dolny claimed nearest the pin on the 5th and Andy Croome managed to just find the scrape on the 10th.

Golf this Sunday is at Yackandandah for their tournament, at 10am for a 10:30am hit off.

It would be great to see as many men there as possible as they are always great supporters of our events.

Bushies reload for season ‘23

By NATHAN DE VRIES WITH the dust just settling from the 2022 footy seasons, Beechworth are already primed and ready to push into season 2023, after holding their annual general meeting last Sunday and already resigning key players back to Baarmutha Park.

Adam Fendyk will again lead the club as president, with vice president of football Darren McCormick, vice president of netball Annika Knoth, and new additions including secretary Si-

mone Sockett and treasurer Fiona Stringer taking over from John Sheehan.

Other roles, including registration, merchandise and social media, have also been filled, along with the myriad of other volunteer run cogs which make a successful club run.

Fendyk said to be in such a position so early is a major positive for the Bushrangers.

“If you want a checklist, we’ve got our committee willing and in place and all our teams have coaches

appointed bar one across football and netball, that’s because there are a couple of people interested and we have to sort out who’s the best person for the job,” he said.

“To be in that position in October ‘22 for the 2023 season is pretty exciting.

“There’s been some quite good consistency there, however, we’ve had a good turnover of people with new and fresh ideas coming through, and a diversity of age groups to some extent as well, some from the

playing side and some from the parents of players.

“Our goal is to have people on the committee who can then move into executive roles later on, but this year we had Simone and Fiona come into exec roles from outside the club which is great.

“We had some ons and offs in the general committee as well, and the usual faces when it comes to particular roles like social media or merchandise or our events.”

In terms of on-field per-

formance, the Bushrangers are sure to push for the senior grand final in 2023 after falling in the preliminary final to Kiewa in September.

Co-coaches Tom Cartledge and Brayden Carey have re-signed to lead the squad, with big names and heavy hitters such as Beechworth B&F winner Cam Fendyk and the Surrey brothers Kayde and Brenton among many committed to the red and blue.

Fendyk said the goal was to bring some young-

er players, who lived in Beechworth but played elsewhere, back to the club.

“We’ve seen already the Eaton boys have come back from Myrtleford, which is great, and I think their older brother Lockie is planning to play with us as well, which is great,” he said.

“We want a Beechworth team full of Beechworth people, is the reality.

“Whether they’re born here, live here or played junior footy here, we consider them Bushies and that’s who we’re after.”
