the humble 80-year-old said.

Born into a family entrenched in local life, Helen’s passion as a volunteer in the community has been ingrained from an early age with her enthusiasm to help others continuing throughout her life.

Helen said she had followed in the steps of

her mother as a dedicated Red Cross volunteer who had been awarded life membership as well as her two late sisters who had been Red Cross members too.

Helen’s mother had also been given life membership to the new Ovens District Hospital which later became known as Beechworth

Health Service.

“My mum made cakes for the local footy club too,” she said.

Helen attributed receiving recognition of the award to her family - three daughters Jenny, Sue and Jane, and late husband Edward (Ted) with their support for her work.

Outstanding Indigo Shire citizens recognised with Australia Day awards WAHGUNYAH resident Wes Canny has been named Indigo Shire’s 2022 Citizen of the Year.

In receiving the award, a surprised Wes said he is thrilled and humbled by the recognition.

“I get so much more out of volunteering than I put in,” he said.

“Volunteering is incredibly rewarding from a mental health and wellbeing, and social perspectives but it also shows what we can achieve for our community when we work together, and to be recognised for that is great.”

“I’m lucky I’m at a point in my life that I have the time and the opportunity to try to make a difference for my community and our region, it just makes sense for me to do it.”

Mayor Bernard Gaffney said the award recognised the significant contribution made by Wes to the Wahgunyah community over a number of years.

“His encouragement to be your best and his contribution to make his township, sporting clubs and community the best they can be, make him a very worthwhile award recipi-

Cr Gaffney said the list of achievements and the contribution he has made to his community is to be admired.

“He’s been a member and mentor to many at the Wahgunyah Football-Netball Club, a committee member, coach and mentor of the Corowa Rowing Club and in 2018 was named Victorian Sports Award Community Coach of the Year.”

Among other contributions, Wes has been a Wahgunyah Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee member since 2013, and was instrumental in helping secure funding for a new Community Centre and the building of new netball and tennis courts in 2021-2022.

He is also the current resident of the Wahgunyah Progress Association and the Wahgunyah Railway Land Development Committee.

From page 1 “My mum and dad were around in the early years and supported me as well,” she said.

Educated at Beechworth Primary School and the local high school where her children also attended, Helen said her voluntary work in helping others began with her interests in supporting her daughters as they grew up, along with other developing interests in the town.

“I was a member of many school committees including being on the high school council as well as running the school canteen, but the latter was paid work,” she said.

Managing the high school canteen for 21 years, Helen said it took her a long time to retire from the role as she enjoyed it so much.

“It was great to be part of the school community and getting to know the kids,” she said.

Her countless special memories included arranging many school reunions and helping to organise the Beechworth Primary School centenary anniversary celebrations in 1975.

“We had a very big day which was really special for me because I went to school there and my kids went there too,” she said.

BEECHWORTH lief is another role for Helen who with two other local branch members travelled to Lilydale in the Dandenongs last year to help out in outreach after severe damaging storms.

“One of our jobs was checking on people with door–knocks to make sure they were okay,” she said.

Helen also supported people including emergency service organisations in the role during the bushfires fires in 2003, 2006 and the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.

Another memory is starting Cubs in Beechworth in her late teenage years when she trained as the first Cub Scout leader that added to Scout training for boys in the town.

“When I was at school we had Brownies as part of Girl Guides, but nothing for boys,” Helen said.

“I loved doing that, and that time has many good memories,” she said.

“The Cubs formed a guard of honour when I got married.”

Helen was a Girl Guides volunteer leader for around two years as well.

PHOTO: Coral Cooksley She was an original community member who started the town‘s Op Shop where Helen still gives her time, helps with Meals on Wheels, and had been a coordinator for the ‘Walking School Bus” which ran for the last decade until it stopped last year due to COVID impacts.

“I loved getting to know the kids and hearing their stories,” she said.

“With volunteering you have all these great experiences and memories that you would not otherwise have, and you get more out of it than you put in.

“Being involved with community and having interaction with people as a volunteer has all been very enjoyable and rewarding for me.”

A member of the local Red Cross for more than three

decades joining in 1989, Helen received a 30 year long service medal in 2019, and the Red Cross Good Service Award presented at Government House in 2016.

She has knitted hundreds of trauma teddies as well to give to children in need.

Other awards have included Indigo Shire‘s Australia Day Beechworth Citizen of the Year in 2010, and the

Lion‘s International Award for Outstanding Community Service in 2015.

Beechworth branch Red Cross chairperson, Julia Smith said Helen as the longest serving member has been a committed and dedicated volunteer.

“She is a valuable and highly respected team member who always puts her hand up to help,” she said.

“It‘s a great privilege to know Helen and she is very worthy of the award which is well–deserved.”

Long–time Red Cross member Gwen Gray OAM, said Helen is an inspiration with her loyalty, compassion, friendship, a willingness to help anyone, and is a great example to the town.

Helen was involved in basketball, badminton and swimming and also taught children to swim.

She is a member of the local Probus Club, a Church of England Parish member, an Indigo calling member for Beechworth Health Service – a volunteer telephone visiting program for community members, is a Red Cross catering team coordinator, has held various Red Cross office bearer positions as well as being a past chairperson, and was a founding member of the former local Neighbourhood Watch committee.

Local residents become Australian citizens

By CORAL COOKSLEY THREE Indigo Shire residents became Australian citizens in an Australia Day ceremony held in Indigo Shire Council office grounds at Mayday Hills.

Beechworth’s Ludovic Baulacky originally from Mauritius, Jessica Devi from Wahgunyah who hails from Fiji with Yackandandah’s Celia Haley from the United Kingdom made the pledge to the nation before Mayor Bernard Gaffney.

Guest speaker Federal MP for Indi Dr Helen Haines said the official welcome into the Australian community made

citizenship special.

“Skills and talent of people and families who come into our nation and call it their home makes Australia a special place,” she said.

Dr Haines said people often came into the nation with a story behind them.

“That story is often one of hardship and one of hope and it’s a very significant day when they become an Australian citizen,” she said.

Cr Gaffney said some of the new citizens had been residents for a number of years where they had already made a difference to their community.

“It’s a very special day for

both the new citizens and the community,” he said.

“They now have the rights and privileges as all Australians including the right to vote.”

Following the citizenship ceremony, Dr Haines gave an informative speech about local resident Helen McIntosh’s outstanding voluntary service to the Beechworth community.

Helen had been recognised for that service with her appointment to the Order of Australia announced in this year’s Australia Day Honours awards where she will receive a medal of the order (OAM).

“One of the things I know as a member for Indi is there is gold left in the Beechworth hills, and sitting with us today is a pure nugget of gold,” she said.

Born and raised in Beechworth where Helen has spent her life in the town, Dr Haines outlined the volunteer’s extraordinary contribution to the community.

“Every organisation I mention has been the better for having the skills of Helen McIntosh,” she said.

Helen’s three daughters joined her for the occasion where she could be congratulated on receiving the distinguished award.

Indigo’s outstanding youth recognised with awards

IN another nod to the shire’s outstanding youth, Indigo Shire Youth for Climate Action (ISYCA) took out the Shire’s ‘Community Organisation of the Year Award’ on Australia Day .

ISYCA members received their award at a presentation organised by a small group of local service club representatives in Beechworth’s Town Hall Gardens on Wednesday morning.

Rotarian and Beechworth Secondary College principal Patricia Broom presented the awards on behalf of Indigo Shire Council.

Stanley’s Alex Entwistle, received his award at the presentation too.

The other recipient Dharma Kotzur lives in Barnawartha where he received his award.

Both Dharma and Alex had been school captains last year with the pair described as outstanding role models for their peers.

Alex said he was ‘stoked’ in receiving the award.

“I feel privileged, and loved being able help students in my leadership role in the Beechworth Secondary College community as well as in the wider one,” he said.

Cr Bernard Gaffney said ISYCA has been working to bring young people

together from around the North East to connect and act on the challenges of Climate Emergency,.

“They have a plan of action to Connect - Educate and Act to provide a space for local young people to develop and enact their own plans of action in climate and environmental issues,” he said.

A founding ISYCA member Ali Thwaites said the group loved being a part of the North East community.

“We’re proud to be recognised for our work,” she said.

On behalf of the group, Ali said Australia and all communities still faced a struggle for equality, sustainability, and care for all people and country.

Ali said there is a long way to go with

issues such as climate action, treatment of refugees, relationship with past and present history, and recognition of First Peoples’ knowledge, values and rights.

“For this reason, while we are really proud to be recognised by our community, we do not support the celebration of so-called “Australia Day” on January 26 which should be renamed ‘Day of Mourning and First Nations Sovereignty with pathways to move forward,” she said.

Ali said another day could be chosen to celebrate “what makes us Australian.”

New leadership program manager to lead the way FOR over 20 years Wangaratta-based Alpine Valleys Community Leadership has developed people across the North East to be leaders in their communities, and will continue to do so under the watchful eye of newly appointed program manager, Suz Christison.

AVCL executive officer Jacqui Bramwell said Ms Christison brings a range of valuable and relevant skills to the role.

“Suz commands over 25 years of experience in group facilitation and training, leadership development, community engagement, project management and strategic planning,” Ms Bramwell said.

“Suz initially trained and worked in outdoor education and then grew her career across a range of roles in a spread of industries, including natural resource management, health, local government, community, small business and disability.

“She then went on to establish her own facilitation and training business in 2016, through which she has successfully designed and delivered a range of leadership programs across the region.”

Ms Christison lives in Whitfield in the beautiful King Valley and has been active in her local community in a range of ways across arts, sustainability and education.

Remembering remarkable Ian Jones in March this year

By CORAL COOKSLEY PATRON of the Ian Jones memorial charity event titled ‘The Australian Identity’ to be held for the first time, Peter FitzSimons, will be among guest speakers at the special occasion in March.

The event is a memorial tribute to Mr Jones’ contribution to Australian heritage.

Renowned commentator and author, Mr FitzSimons developed a friendship with the late Ian Jones (1931 to 2018) when undertaking research for his own Ned Kelly book with Ian being a forerunner in the Ned Kelly story.

“Mr FitzSimons dedicated the publication to Ian Jones,” events project officer John Baines said.

Mr Baines said plans are being finalised for the event with its theme to acknowledge Ian’s Jones artistic and academic contributions in portraying Australian characters as well as his support of the Robert O’Hara Burke Museum “Ian had an interest in the Ned Kelly story from an early age visiting Beechworth, became an entrenched member of the community and later bought a home in Last Street,” he said.

As a proud Australian, through his work in journalism, film, television and the recording of Australian history, Ian had contributed

to the definition of the ‘Australian Identity’ being the event’s title.

Among four speakers where questions can be asked after the 15 minute talks, will be Mrs Elizabeth Jones on behalf of the Jones family’s contribution to the arts and Mr FitzSimons with a focus on Ned Kelly.

Local history buff Daniel Goonan will speak about his personal reflections on Ian’s Beechworth contribution while Ian’s son Darren who will be speaking on behalf of Mr David Lee - a film maker with a focus on film and television.

Two different sessions on Saturday, March 19 will run with one from 3pm to 5.30pm in the Beechworth Town Hall at a cost of $30 per person for the general public and volunteers $20, followed by a dinner event with Mr FitzSimons starting at 7pm at the Nicholas Hotel at a cost of $70 per person.

A discounted ticket at $90 per person will be available if attending both events.

A meet and greet will also be held at the Burke Museum from 4.30pm to 5.30pm A one page essay on the topic of The Australian identity will be open to Beechworth Secondary College students.

FORMER Army commando and Wahgunyah resident Ross Lyman was last night officially endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate for Indi for the 2022 federal election.

The father of two children will launch his campaign this morning against incumbent independent Helen Haines, Labor's Nadia David, Greens Party man Benjamin Gilbert, with a Nationals candidate still yet to be announced.

Mr Lyman served in the Australian Army with postings in Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan in the 1990s and following this, his career has spanned agriculture, manufacturing, operations and logistics - particularly in the wine industry.

Agriculture, education, regional development and national security are some of the areas of opportunity Mr Lyman wants to work on if successful at this year's federal election.

He grew up around viticulture and currently runs

a vineyard in Wahgunyah which he said puts him in a good place to understand the challenges faced in agriculture and business in the electorate.

He worked as an executive at Treasury Wine Estates and as a senior executive at McWilliam’s Wines Group in the Riverina.

As a management consultant at KPMG and Ernst & Young, he has worked on large scale state and federal health infrastructure and defence projects.

He wants his children to grow up and lead a balanced and fulfilling life with access to education, health, jobs and recreation - without having to leave the region.

“Around 40 per cent of school leavers in Indi finish at year 10 and go off and do a trade because that is their strength,” he said.

“Another angle is how do we encourage kids to finish their VCE and have broader pathways, whether it’s university or another graduate course?

“As it currently sits when people get to school leaving age they will most likely leave the region and spread their wings but if you look at what Indi offers, there is really no need for people to leave.”

dium to large businesses to Indi is front of mind.

“I want to look at how can the government support and attract businesses to create jobs and all the housing, education and support to go with it,” he said.

“As part of the Liberal party the issues we have to look at is how to secure the economy, and how do we build businesses particularly coming out of COVID, because so many family businesses have been hurt, and how do we attract tourists and promote our trade.”

Labor’s plan to help Indi schoolkids bounce back

AN Albanese Labor Government will deliver $440 million to schools for better ventilation, building upgrades, and mental health support, as part of a new plan to help Australian kids bounce back after COVID according to local ALP candidate Nadia David.

“As schools prepare to return for 2022, parents are worried sick about sending their kids back to school,” Ms David said.

“Scott Morrison’s delays getting a COVID vaccine for young people, and a shortage of rapid antigen tests, means many students will be more exposed than they should be returning to class.

“Under Labor’s plan, schools in Indi will be able to access grants from a Local Schools Upgrade Fund to improve air quality with measures such as better ventilation, building more outdoor classrooms, replacing boarded-up windows and doors and buying air purifiers.

“Funding will be available for other much needed school upgrades as well.”

The opposition leader also announced that a Labor government would also provide schools with extra funding to get children’s mental health and wellbeing back on track with a Student Wellbeing Boost.

“This will mean more school coun-

sellors and psychologists, and extra funding for camps, excursions, as well as sporting and social activities that improve kids’ wellbeing,” Ms David said.

“The past two years have been tough for families in Indi.

“Kids have missed out on activities and experiences, and many are struggling with their mental wellbeing.”

“Labor doesn’t want any Australian child held back because of the pandemic.

“Our plan will help make sure our schools are safe places for kids to learn and our investment in mental health and school upgrades will make sure every kid can get back on track and benefit from a world class education.”

“This is something that Scott Morrison should have been planning for months, but we’ve heard nothing from him about a plan for keep our kids COVID-safe at school.

“In fact, the only government we’ve heard from so far is the Victorian Government.”

The new funding comes on top of Labor’s other plans for education including 20,000 extra university places and 465,000 free TAFE places, and making early learning cheaper for working families.

Local author shines with humorous children’s book

MICE jumping out of a socks in the wash, teeth marks in chocolate and chunks out of cheese, with thousands at the door are some of the rodent antics in an entertaining children’s book showcased at last year’s Quercus Beechworth’s annual Christmas market.

The annual event gave a local author, Stanley’s Wendy TaylorMcKay, the chance to talk about her story for children that relates to real-life situations.

Wendy, a secondary school relief teacher as well, captured children’s and adult interest alike at the event with her book called ‘Mouse Mayhem’ based on living through mouse plagues.

With a love of writing from when a youngster, Ms McKay-Taylor said she enjoyed expressing her creative thoughts in written word.

“I love the music of words and trying to get the rhyming and rhythm happening as well as getting a message across succinctly,” she said.

An illustrator as well with a background in art, Wendy said she also enjoyed the challenge of creating pictures to go with the words.

“It’s interesting to consider the character in the story and a lot easier to create visuals with your own ideas,” she said.

“I used to write and illustrate when I was a kid when we were driving in the car and drew trees as

we didn’t have many where I grew up, and as an adult I won an international art competition with a tree painting.”

With the children’s publication, Wendy said she focused on exaggerated expression to create a mood as well as making the book humorous as it is not a very funny topic.

“It has been a very popular read by three to four year olds,” she said.

A python introduced at the end of the book with a ‘guess why the mice disappeared’ had been included due to negatives associated with snakes.

“Snakes can actually do a lot of good, it’s a non-poisonous one being a python and I hope the young readers’ parents will talk about snakes in a positive way,” Wendy said.

The author has published works across a variety of genres with ‘Mouse Mayhem’ being her first picture book.

With a love of painting too, Wendy has exhibited her artwork in Victoria and Tasmania.

She paints large canvasses in oils, graphite pencil and pen while smaller work illustrations are in gouache.

When not writing and teaching high school students, Wendy is busy with her chestnut farm, horses and sometimes teaching drama classes as well.

The book will soon hit Beechworth Books’ shelves.

First fully accessible restrooms in Indigo Shire INDIGO Shire Council has secured $110,000 under the Victorian Government’s Changing Places program for the shire’s first fully accessible restrooms which will be located at Yackandandah’s Sir Isaacs Park.

Council will contribute $234,000 towards the total construction cost of $374,400.

Sir Isaacs Park has been selected following community and stakeholder consultation in late 2021 where council received more than 400 survey responses with many nominating the Yackandandah location as the preferred site.

Disability service providers, carers of people living with disability and council’s community access committee had been involved in the consultation as well.

Mayor Bernard Gaffney said council has a longterm vision to transform Sir Isaacs Park into an all abilities accessible destination in the town.

“The current toilet block will be replaced with unisex accessible toilets and a changing places facility including adult change tables and hoists,” he said.

“The Yackandandah community is highly inclusive and aware of the barriers that the heritage town presents, as with all Indigo Shire towns.

“This new facility is a great step forward in removing these barriers, allowing people with disabilities to get out and about and enjoy our shire.

“A changing places facility will provide greater access to social and tourism opportunities for people with a disability, their families and carers and we are extremely grateful to the Victorian Government for including Yackandandah in this latest round of funding.”

Construction of the new facility is expected to commence mid-year.

Still caring for her community PENNY Bingham was born in Fremantle, Western Australia (WA) and moved to Rutherglen nine years ago.

What’s your job?

I am a retired teacher. My “job” now is community service.

Why did you become a teacher?

I finished school in 1963.

There weren’t many options for girls in those days.

As a kid, I had always wanted to be a physiotherapist.

I was accepted into the physio school but, to this day, I really don’t know why I didn’t follow that path.

What do did you love about teaching?

The kids. The variety. Every day was different.

There were opportunities for the creative me to flourish and to nurture creativity in the students.

I spent several years as a music specialist, directed the school choir and an instrumental group, taught dance and co-produced school productions.

I am a passionate advocate for learning through the arts.

Sadly, however, due to the shortsightedness of policymakers, arts education is the first casualty whenever there is a funding cut.

What do you do in the community?

I am an advocate for people living with dementia and their carers.

I co-convene the dementia carers support group in Beechworth and volunteer at the aged care facility in Rutherglen.

I played an active role in revitalising the leisure and lifestyle program at the care facility.

I am also involved in several committees focusing on dementia awareness and aged care.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

I would like to see a decent community library.

The current facility is small and cramped.

We need something more open with sitting areas that invite people

to linger; corners for children to immerse themselves in books before making their selection to take home and study corrals for students.

I would like to offer to run reading circles for primary school students but our current building doesn’t provide sufficient space for such a program.

The range of books is also restricted by the limited space.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Conducting a community survey would be a good starting point and perhaps monitoring numbers of visitors to the library, then using the data from those sources to lobby council. I would also get schools involved to give kids an authentic opportunity to engage in community consultation and understand the processes of democracy.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

It has to be climate change.

If the person you would most like

to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

Sir David Attenborough.

I would introduce him to platypus in the creek at Pfeiffer’s winery and brolgas in the wetlands near Gooramadda Road.

We would then retreat to the banks of the Murray River.

Why would you show him that?

The reclusive nature of platypus and brolgas makes the opportunity to view them first-hand, a truly humbling experience, while the banks of the Murray would be an ideal space to discuss, over a glass of local wine, the imperative of global action on climate change.

What book are you reading?

‘Whole Notes: Life Lessons Through Music’ by Ed Ayres.

Ed is the presenter of ABC Classic’s Weekend Breakfast.

Written with simplicity and humour, the book explores music as a metaphor for life.

Striated Pardalote - the treetop specialist

By IAN DAVIDSON and CHRIS TZAROS THROUGHOUT the world in almost every type of forested environment, there is an array of small birds which forage mainly for insects among the canopy foliage.

In Australia, these birds mainly come from two families - the thornbills/ gerygones, and the pardalotes.

Pardalotes are endemic to Australia and they have evolved over thousands of years to be well-suited to ecosystemss dominated by eucalyptus trees.

Their tiny size - no larger than a gum leaf - allow them to dangle from even the spindliest branchlets, and their short stubby bills have a tiny hooked tip which allows them to glean insects from relatively flat surfaces such as leaves and leaf stems.

Psyllid insects are common in Australian eucalypt woodlands - these tiny sap-suckers extract nutrients and moisture from leaves and they secrete a sugary substance, known as lerp, which h dries and forms a protective cover over the insect.

Lerp and psyllid insects form the main diet of the Striated Pardalote, and given this species occurs right around Australia, they are very important ecologically in controlling numbers of these insects which, in severe

infestations, can defoliate trees and even large areas of vegetation.

In the North East, three subspecies of the Striated Pardalote are known to occur, though many observers may struggle to see the difference.

The most frequently encountered is known as the ‘inland’ form which is identified by having a red spot in the wing and a broad white wing stripe.

The ‘south-eastern’ form also has a red spot but a narrow white wing stripe.

The ‘Tasmanian’ form is rarely seen in the region but can occur during autumn-winter.

It is distinguished by having a yellow wing spot and narrow white wing stripe.

Binoculars and good close observation is usually required to be able to spot these differences.

Given their small size and treetop habits, Striated Pardalotes are best detected by their calls.

For a small bird, they have quite a voice and they give a variety of different calls throughout the seasons.

The most commonly heard call is a oft-repeated choo-choo, and a short churring contact call.

Locally, Striated Pardalotes can be found almost anywhere, though they are probably most common in red gums along our creeks and rivers.

WDCA decides to axe their two day fixtures due to the current COVID climate

By WILLSON MACK THE Wangaratta and District Cricket Association board has made the decision to scrap the two-day games scheduled for the end of the year in the A and A reserve grades.

The longer format was set to take place from round 16 onwards, meaning the final two rounds of the home and away season, plus finals will now revert to one day matches instead.

WDCA president Greg Hoysted said the current COVID-19 climate was the major factor for the switch.

“The executive met on Monday night and decided that it’s best to play a season of one day cricket,” Hoysted said.

“We were nervous about starting a two day game and then a club being impacted by COVID and being down players for the second week of the match.

“A team might have 11 or 12

the first week and then be missing a few the next week which would make it all pretty messy when trying to find replacements.

“We want two day cricket to be played but this year it’s just too risky.”

The WDCA will update the fixture in the coming days.

Despite the change, Hoysted insists the board will be looking to play two day games next season.

“In an ideal world we’d like

to play everyone twice, once in one day cricket and once in twoday cricket,” he said.

“Hopefully next year we’ll be able to do that.”

However, in the under 16s and under 14s competition, two day matches will still be played.

“We think it’s easier to shuffle junior teams around than seniors,” Hoysted said.

“We need to work through some little tweaks with the juniors but they won’t change much.”

Numbers up in summer golf THE numbers improved last Thursday for Twilight on the front 9.

We also welcomed a couple of new faces in Ben Ryder and Greg Lee-Conway.

Tony Stockdale blitzed the field with his score of 24 points (23+1).

Dylan Pool was runner up taking home the Coffee Staines voucher with 22 (17+5).

Ball winners were Jamie Dolny 21 (17+4), Aaron Haw 20 (18+2) and Dayne Carey 20 (18+2).

Dylan Pool claimed the jackpotted dozen on the 5th and also nearest the pin on the 7th.

Brian Cropley claimed the cash with his chip in on the 9th.

The Flippin’fresh Seafood Wodonga voucher went to Kerin Rowbottom on the raffle.

On Sunday there was only a small field for a Stableford event.

The best score was Andy Croome with 29 points, George Ward was runner up with 28.

This Sunday is the second round of the Summer Cup - 12:30 for 1pm start.

Wanderers topple Magpies WANGARATTA Magpies sit on top of the combined A grade WDCA ladder after round 12, despite a three wicket loss at the hands of Beechworth Wanderers on Saturday at Baarmutha Park.

The Magpies were bowled out on the last delivery of their 151 run innings, the Wanderers surpassing the total with three wickets still in the shed and seven balls remaining.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Magpies were in trouble early after opener Ryan Malcolm was knocked over by Richard Worcester for a duck off five deliveries.

After Pranav Menon fell for eight, it was up to skipper Jack Davies and Jimmy Thewlis to get the innings back on track.

The pair put on 65 runs before Thewlis was dismissed for 39, and after incoming bat Cooper Matheson was run out for seven, the Magpies were sitting at 4/116.

Davies tried to stick around as wickets fell around him, but after he was run out for 45, the Magpies scraped a few more runs together before being dismissed, the target for Beechworth set at 152 for victory.

Surrey and Ryan backed up their stellar bowling with the willow, getting the Wanderers the start they needed with a 62 run first-wicket partnership.

Ryan’s dismissal for 21 and a brief cameo from Clancy Ellet brought Brenton Surrey to the crease, where the brothers belted the Magpies all over Baarmutha Park, bringing the total up to 146 before they were both dismissed within two deliveries of each other, Brenton for 29 and Kayde for 74.

The Wanderers’ middle order and tail-end bats got the job done, passing the total with seven deliveries remaining.

Zac Guilfoyle led the way with the ball, taking 3/34 for the Magpies.

Favourable results in other matches has Wangaratta Magpies sitting pretty on top of the ladder, four points clear of second placed Yarrawonga Mulwala.
