more than a decade as chairman, to Rutherglen Rotary Club, where he is a charter member having joined in 1987.

Mr Thatcher also spent 14 years co-ordinating the local Good Friday appeal, and

wrote countless stories for the Rutherglen Advertiser as a reporter for a time.

Indigo Shire Mayor Sophie Price said the award recognised Mr Thatcher’s ongoing commitment to his local

township and the wider community.

“Laurie’s commitment to serving his community is to be admired and truly makes him a worthy recipient of this award,” she said.

“For over 40 years he has been a stalwart of the community, whether it be through committees of management, sporting to charitable endeavours.

“This recognition is so

well-earned and deserved.”

A long-time sport tragic, Mr Thatcher has been a member of the Rutherglen Golf Club for 38 years, serving three terms as president and spending countless hours as a volunteer and committee member.

His love for the game is yet to cease, currently performing duties as the club’s handicapper.

By RYAN MALCOLM A PAIR of young leaders have shared Australia Day honours, each named Indigo Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year in recognition of their ongoing work in the Yackandandah and Rutherglen communities.

Henry Rotherham, 17, and Joseph Brooks, 18, yesterday officially received the honours , with community members touting the natural leadership abilities of both.

A key mentor within the Yackandandah community, Henry said he was shocked when notified of his nomination.

“I was very surprised to get the letter saying I had won - it was quite a shock for me, I had to do a double take,” he said.

Named Rutherglen High School captain in 2022, Joseph played a key role in representing students on school council, and continues to demonstrate his leadership nous through his work as a lifeguard at Rutherglen Pool, where he is expected to be named head lifeguard shortly.

“Being a leader and a role model is something I always wanted to be,” he said.

“I have look up to many others on and off the footy field and have never taken my position for grants, either when I was a junior school captain or senior school captain, aware I had expectations to live up to and the role being more than just a title.

“The aim of finishing high school for me was to leave a legacy, a positive impact, with teachers and younger kids.

“I really appreciated being nominated and that someone saw something in me that I didn’t see, it is really humbling.”

Yackandandah and Rutherglen were well represented in this year’s awards, with Rutherglen’s Laurie Thatcher named Citizen of the Year, while Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY)

was heralded as the region’s Community Organisation of the Year.

Through five years of operation, TRY has established itself as a leader in communityled sustainability initiatives, supporting the Yackandandah community in achieving a 60 per cent renewable status and helping to establish Indigo Power.

“TRY has established itself as a true leader in working towards a truly sustainable future,” Cr Price said.

“The team’s ability to bring the community along on this important journey and dedication to achieving tangible and practical progress in energy transition is truly inspirational.”

He said the recognition had been a humbling experience, and said he enjoyed reflecting on his wealth of experiences as a volunteer.

“I can think of a lot of other people ahead of me on the list worthy of the Citizen of the Year award,” he said.

“Volunteering is great for making contacts in the local community, especially post-COVID. “You can come together and talk, laugh and connect.

“I’ve loved being able to distribute funds to school kids so they get to enjoy an end of year celebration or sending money overseas where it can help communities in need.”

Submission call for upcoming exhibition

By CORAL COOKSLEY LOCAL artist Valerie Crosse is excited to have her artwork featured in Beechworth Arts Council’s major community art exhibition ‘Art in Autumn - the last seasonal fling’ being held at Beechworth’s historic town hall from Thursday, May 4 to Sunday, May 7.

Valerie will be among a number of Beechworth Arts Council (BAC) members with works from across a range of mediums such as print, painting, drawings and sculpture.

BAC president Darren Pope said the showcase promises to be a riot of colour and form reflecting Mother Nature’s last fling before her winter slumber.

“We’re giving people time to think about what they would like to submit and calling for artists who would like to become a BAC member to join and submit entry forms,” he said.

Mr Pope said for the first time a People’s Choice Award is being offered where art patrons visiting the exhibition will be encouraged to cast their vote.

The winner, to be announced on the last day of the event, will see their artwork and biography featured among other regional artists on the BAC website.

Mr Pope said BAC is the longest running art organisation in Indigo Shire and had been established in 1974 by a group of like-minded creatives.

As an affiliated Regional Arts Victoria member, BAC founded the first arts and craft market in the 1980s, offered exhibition and studio space along with a variety of creative workshops throughout the 1990s as well as producing the

first local spoken and written word festival known as WRAP (writers, readers and poets) in the 2000s.

Mr Pope said there had been a series of popular spring arts festivals over the last decade too.

With BAC an integral part of the Beechworth and greater Indigo art community, the president said the exhibition gave artists a forum to showcase their work where the community can also engage with them.

“For me as a community arts advocate the arts are about community cohesion as well as we know that having arts activities has economic benefits for the town too.”

A shady solution PERFORMERS are set to have shade with the recent completion of the shade sail project in Chiltern’s Martins Park.

The finished project has provided shade for performers at the sound shell where jammers and other musicians will now have a more pleasant experience.

Energy efficient solutions reduce electricity costs

WITH increasing community take up of solar installations, a local social enterprise electricity retailer aims to have excess energy distributed to prospective customers.

Indigo Power managing director Ben McGowan said the enterprise has around 1300 electricity retail customers in the local area and is currently delivering a program to grow that number.

“We’re targeting people and small businesses who don’t have solar because we need people to use excess solar generated by our solar customers during the day,” he said.

“Around 60 per cent or more people and businesses in Yackandandah have solar installations and it’s quite high in Beechworth too.”

With battery storage an Indigo Power focus as well, the first community-owned battery installation was pioneered together with Totally Renewable Yackandandah in 2021 to supply local customers.

The enterprise, which reinvests half of its profits back into clean energy and community projects, has

forged ahead in supplying renewable energy to communities across North East Victoria and southern NSW. With transition from an electricity system driven by fossil fuel generators to renewable energy, Mr McGowan said clean energy will become the dominant source of generation for the national electricity market.

“Markets are becoming more volatile and it’s becoming harder for coal-fired generators to operate,” he said.

“Across the summer months large amounts of solar generation are pushing down daytime prices in the national electricity market.

“Storage solutions, like the community battery and pumped hydro energy storage facilities we are currently analysing, are a key focus across the industry.”

Mr McGowan said the local renewable energy solutions are an important step in insulating consumers from the current high prices being driven in fossil fuel commodity markets.

The current energy crisis with the war in Ukraine has pushed up prices for fossil fuel-based energy, particularly gas.”

GROWING COMMODITY: Indigo Power managing director Ben McGowan says the enterprise now caters to 1300 retail customers.

“We’re growing our electricity retail customer base and working with local communities to deliver renewable energy solutions.”

Mr McGowan said the enterprise is also working on big projects for critical community services in bushfire prone areas such as hospitals to install solar and battery systems that will also provide

backup energy during emergency outages, and clean energy and reduced power costs on a day-to-day basis.

Community solar systems with batteries will keep pharmacies open, fuel stations can remain open so people can evacuate, and ATMs keep working in emergencies.

“We’re focusing on the

community level too in exploring how renewable energy can be used to support the community from an economic development perspective,” he said.

Undertaking community battery type projects where people can join a community energy hub, Mr McGowan said local communities work together on renewable en-

ergy generation.

The managing director said customers could reduce power costs through energy efficiency measures.

“Hot water is the largest drawer of electricity in a house and if you have a standard hot water system, it’s cheaper to buy upfront, but you can get hot water heat pumps where the technology is 80 per cent more efficient, which saves the customer a large amount on an ongoing basis.”

As electricity prices keep going up, particularly gas due to the war in Ukraine, Mr McGowan said people are being forced to look at alternatives.

“Solar power system installation costs are going down and if more people take up clean energy solution, the more cost effective it’s going to be,” he said.

Mr McGowan said regional areas have a much higher solar take-up compared to metropolitan counterparts.

Indigo Power has partnered with community energy groups from Albury to Seymour to deliver its electricity retail product and deliver local renewable energy projects.

Youngsters get creative with NGV program

By CORAL COOKSLEY QUERCUS Beechworth is one of 130 venues around the state where young people had fun with free NGV art and creative activities for school holiday entertainment between January 14-22.

The NGV (National Gallery Victoria) ‘Kids on Tour’ program linked to their exhibitions is backed by the Victorian Government.

This year’s tour celebrated the theme ‘Let’s Make Art’, offering captivating and creative activities for kids and their families.

Kids could tap into sculpture, drawing, collage and creative writing resources and activities.

Quercus Beechworth community engagement coordinator Jess Oldmeadow said six sessions had been held in its Oregon Hall over the school holidays, where 60 children aged between five and 12 years old attended.

“We provided a facilitator to bring the resources to life and share a passion for art with our local community,” she said.

“The opportunity for regional children to engage in learning linked to one of Australia’s largest art galleries and is consistent across the state, is a real bonus and something we’ve been glad to offer.

“From poets, painters and sculptures, children learned more about modern and historical artists whilst also having the opportunity to get creative themselves.

“Kids made paper sculptures, wrote poems about their favourite people, and imaginary creatures were all created as a part of the NGV program.”

Jess said Quercus facilitator Charlie created her own workshop about celebrating Beech-

worth people and what makes them happy, where the session had been inspired by American sculptor Nick Cave.

The 2023 program took place in galleries, libraries, paediatric hospitals, neighbourhood houses, migrant resource centres and community organisations in regional, suburban and metropolitan areas throughout January.

NGV’s year-round outreach programs range from talks at regional galleries and loans of iconic items from the NGV Collection to online

social activities for senior citizens and activities for people living in aged care as well.

NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM said since its inaugural year in 2014, the Kids on Tour Program has demonstrated NGV’s commitment to providing Victorians of all ages with the opportunity to engage with art and design from around the world.

The collaborative group artwork by the youngsters is on show in the Quercus Beechworth Community Garden.

A NETHERLANDS couple marked Beechworth as a ‘must see’ destination on their four-month travels, taking in New Zealand as well as Australia’s east coast.

While in New Zealand the pair said a Sydney couple they met sparked their interest to visit Beechworth.

On a two day stay, Marjolein Ris and her husband Harm-Jan Klifman pedal pushed along the rail trail from Beechworth to Everton last week with their youngsters four-year old Norah and two-year-old Kristen.

The cyclists returned via Taylors Gap on their bikes brought with them from their home country.

“We love Beechworth with its interesting history,” Harm-Jan said.

The international travellers planned to visit the Burke Museum and historic precinct to send an old-fashioned telegram overseas before the family hit the road to Cairns in their hire vehicle.

Fundraiser to help find a cure for MND THREE Indigo Shire residents are calling for the community to join them in raising funds to find a cure for Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

Beechworth’s Georgia O’Connor and Fid Smithwick, and Chiltern’s Nichola Schulz have lost a close family member to MND. The trio is determined to work together with the community to raise local awareness of the disease and much needed funds to find a cure.

Ms O’Connor said losing her father-in-law, Beechworth solicitor Brendan Halliday, to MND in 2015 had inspired her to start fundraising.

She said support of fellow community members Ms Smithwick and Ms Schulz

had been instrumental in putting plans into action.

“I’ve wanted to do something for a long time to help prevent other families from experiencing the trauma of MND,” Ms O’Connor said.

“It’s a very cruel disease where there is very little treatment and no cure.”

“Working together to raise funds for MND has been a way for us to create something positive from our shared experiences and the grief of losing a loved one to MND.” Ms Schulz, who lost her mother Susan to MND in 2021, said working together had made it possible for her to contribute to the cause around the demands of her young family and business.

“By working together and contributing what we can, we know we are helping to end MND and having a lot of fun in the process.”

Peta Smithwick in 2020, said the group had lots of plans in the pipeline, with an eventual goal of supporting local community members with MND as well as funding for a cure.

She said more members of the community are needed to join their group to help bring those ideas to fruition.

The group’s fundraising efforts will commence with

a sausage sizzle at 9am on Saturday, February 11 outside Ritchies IGA Beechworth, with all profits going to MND Victoria.

The women are now inviting everyone in the community and beyond to show their support by volunteering to assist on the day or at a future event, or by simply coming along to enjoy a sau-

sage sizzle and a cold drink.

“We can’t do this alone, but with the support of our community, we know we can help end MND” Ms Smithwick said.

By BELINDA HARRISON MEMBERS of Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY) worked on a community renewable energy system for approximately eight years and it has now come to fruition thanks to the help and support of (among others) the Into Our Hands Community Foundation.

Important questions needed to be answered: how do we get more renewable energy generated and stored locally and how do we effectively move it around town?

A significant solar powered battery was the answer and now supports the community through electricity partner - Mondo Power - by providing electricity to more than 200 properties throughout the town.

“The community scale battery project is an important developmental part of the process in creating a whole of town ecosystem focused on renewable energy,” TRY member Matthew Charles-Jones explained.

In addition to the town ecosystem and community battery, Into Our Hands also granted TRY with monies for a battery system located at the Yackandandah CFA station.

This ensures that the station can maintain power during major emergencies and, in particular, communications which is extremely important.

This battery is also part of the move to support community and environmental sustainability.

Having a foundation like Into Our Hands in the local community is an important benefit not only to community groups like TRY, but to whole townships.

An organisation like TRY is run almost exclusively by volunteers, which is fantastic as it empowers the community to be involved, however there can be times when expertise or the ability for is limited, which is where a foundation like Into Our Hands can help.

“Being supported financially by someone like Into Our Hands through grant applications and administration needs is so important as it allows us to stretch ourselves further and do more for the community,” TRY member Claire Bishop said.

“Into Our Hands has been a really critical ingredient in the success of a community battery in Yackandandah and have become a

really trusted guide for us,” Matthew added.

“Being able to raise money and get our projects wellfocused means there is a really beautiful connection between effort by community, partnership with community retailer and purchase of clean power and Into Our Hands really enabled that to occur.”

REWARDING: Wooragee’s Libby Mourik loved her teaching career where she felt privileged in helping students to reach their goals.

Healthy crops needed to feed communities ELIZABETH (Libby) Mourik was born in Dundee, Scotland and moved with her family to Adelaide in South Australia when she was just four years old. Libby moved to the Ayre Peninsular after she married, with a shift to Albury Wodonga sometime later and has lived in Wooragee for five years.

What did you do in your career?

I taught art and then language, literacy and numeracy. Originally, I was the only art teacher at Penola High School in South Australia, later taught part-time at Port Lincoln High School, and then Ayre Peninsular TAFE before moving to North East Victoria. Being a border resident, I first taught art subjects at the Wodonga Community Centre, had a part-time teaching position at Wodonga High School with a later brief Beechworth High School appointment before a part-time job at Albury TAFE in language, literacy and numeracy that led to a full-time one.

What brought you to your last teaching role in language and literacy?

Before working at TAFE, I heard about Riverina College of Advanced Education’s (now Charles Sturt University) new course in language and literacy. After gaining a graduate diploma in the discipline, I took up a position at Albury TAFE. I was the only language, literacy and numeracy teacher and with such a busy teaching portfolio, I had approval to create the first language, literacy and numeracy department. I engaged qualified staff and at retirement, I had six

What did you love about your job?

I had an interesting career at Albury TAFE and retired after 20 years as senior head teacher. I loved leading a team of intelligent, reliable and determined teaching staff, helping adults to improve their language, literacy and numeracy (LL&N) skills. LL&N is required for every subject, so we all felt privileged to help our students achieve their goals. Every day was interesting and at times challenging, but always with good humour and laughter. With wonderful staff, it was easy to love my job.

What do you do in the community?

With my husband Pieter, I am a member of Wooragee Landcare and Neighbourhood Watch. I plan to join the Beechworth U3A this year, get back into art again and join a local choir.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Climate change. Being on the land, we are aware of the importance of growing healthy crops to feed the community. We need to develop healthy land, remove weeds, intel-

ligently use water and try to protect the farm from the elements.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

We live in a total solar house, plant native trees and vegetation at our farm and have grown a native tree corridor for koalas and native animals in Wooragee. We also support a team of Wooragee Landcare members, restoring and regenerating projects during the year.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Overpopulation - this is intimately linked to Climate change deterioration. We see in our own patch how much land has been consumed for new buildings, reducing productive land for food.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, who would that be and what would you show them?

My wonderful intelligent father who was born in a small village in Scotland’s highland. He was a civil engineer, endured WWII and travelled to Germany after the war to assist in repairing the community. I would show him around Wooragee.

Why would you show him that?

He would be fascinated by the heritage buildings, the current architecture, and the community lifestyle.

What book are you reading?

‘The Dictionary of Lost Words’ by Pip Williams about the Oxford English Dictionary’s beginnings.

Storms cut full round short

LAST Thursday there were 16 golfers who played a twilight competition on the back nine.

Dayne Carey was the winner with 22 (20+2), while Tyson Carey came runner up with 21 (19+2) to take home The George Kerferd Hotel voucher.

Ball winners were Dylan Pool 19, Warwick Deuis 18, Darren McCormick 18 and Emilio Miranda 18.

The Beechworth Bakery nearest the pin award went to Warwick Deuis on the 10th and Darren McCormick took home the six pack on the Alpine Indigo Accounting nearest the pin on the 17th.

Dave Clark had a good night taking home the cash with the nearest chip on the 14th and also won the raffle.

On Sunday a handful of golfers set out to play a stableford round on the full course for the first time in months.

They managed to get around the front nine and to just about the farthest point away from the clubhouse before the heavens opened up and play was called off after 12 holes.

Hollie Goodwin was crowned the winner on a countback with 22 points from Andy Croome.

Sunday golf will start from 12:30 for a 1pm hit off.

Wanderers seeking outright win

THE Beechworth Wanderers A grade side will be searching for maximum points this weekend, holding a strong position in its two-day match against Delatite at Baarmutha Park.

Beechworth is on track for its second two-day win in as many games, making 241 with the bat last week and restricting Delatite to 3/13 ahead of the resumption of play tomorrow afternoon.

Of the star performers with the bat was Cam Fendyk, who fell just short of his century, finishing with a near run a ball 95.

Fendyk said the team will be pushing to claim an outright result this weekend and capitlise on their dominant batting performance.

“It was a bit of a slow start from our side losing Kayde Surrey early on, normally when Beechworth make a score like that it’s the two Surreys who have done all the damage,” he said.

“Young Clancy Ellett made a really good start to keep the score moving and when myself and Brenton came in, the pitch had flattened out and Mansfield

Fendyk has been in red hot form this season, averaging 31 with the bat and nine with the ball to place him seventh in both aggregates in the A grade season across all formats.

After taking most of last season off and travelling overseas early

this season, Fendyk said he was uncertain of committing to cricket.

“I struggled the first few games with the bat, had no training at all, my first crack at it was in our first game against Rovers,” he said.

“After the first few games I started taking it a bit more seriously, knowing I was going to play every week and I’m really enjoying it this year.

“I suppose that’s what happens when you start making a few runs.”

Fendyk has relished the opportunity of making a consistent bowling contribution in A grade this season, traditionally called upon as a specialist batsmen in the past.

“I’ve been pretty consistent; I took my first five fa in A Grade this season which was pretty cool,” he said.

“Having other bowlers like Richie Worcester and Kayde you can bowl in partnerships with and tie up an end, and once the pressure starts building and you take a few wickets it makes it a bit easier as well.”

The Wanderers currently sit fifth on the A grade ladder, locked in a tight battle for fourth with Ovens Valley.
