Top gong for dragon boat club BEECHWORTH Golden Serpents Dragon Boat Club has been crowned the Victorian Good Sports Award’s New Club of the Year for their commitment to building a healthier, familyfriendly club environment where everyone feels welcome from day one.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation in Melbourne, the awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the

country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Golden Serpents received $1000 for championing and implementing Good Sports policies that encourage inclusiveness, safety and connectedness from the moment the club was estab-

lished in June 2021.

Attending the ceremony and receiving the award was a great honor and recognition of the hard work and commitment of the founding members in establishing the club according to club president Brendan Maher.

“We’ve made great progress in our first year and winning the National New Club of the Year Award motivates us to continue creating a welcoming club that is diverse and a posi-

tive influence on the community,” Brendan said.

Club secretary Christine Gabriel was also excited about the win.

“Good Sports has been instrumental in getting the Beechworth Dragon Boat Club off the ground, setting us up with a solid foundation as we recruit new members and expand,” she said.

The club attended their first State Championship Regatta at Carrum Downs last

Saturday racing over 500m and 2000m in women’s, open and mixed divisions.

A number of their team entries made the finals and successfully on the podium receiving three bronze medals.

Brendan said this was an amazing achievement for a new club in the first season and highlights the commitment of members enjoying team work and fitness to compete at state level.

Primary school student rescued from play mishap EMERGENCY service crews were forced to dismantle play equipment, as they endeavoured to rescue a child who had become trapped at a Beechworth school.

SES, CFA and Ambulance crews responded to the Junction Road premises around 4pm on Tuesday afternoon, following reports a child had become entangled in a gap between two metal handrails.

Beechworth SES unit controller Charles Dean said response teams had been shocked to find the child in such a predicament.

“It was a piece of play equipment where a child‘s leg has just slipped through,” he said.

“I really have no idea how it was possible to get through – it was a combination of climbing along the handrails and having very thin legs.”

CFA crews managed to unfasten bolts which were locking the handrail in place, freeing the w child.

“After about five minutes, the child was running around again happily,” Mr Dean said.

The child, who received a comprehensive tour of the CFA truck on–scene, was uninjured, with a Department of Education spokesperson confirming they had returned to school the following day.

Bill Shorten at Beechworth

By MARK STEPHENS SHADOW Labor NDIS minister, Bill Shorten addressed an enthusiastic crowd at the Nicholas Hotel, Beechworth last Friday evening with Nadia David, the ALP candidate for Indi.

“Nadia will be a great federal politician, she has a wonderful supportive family, she is very active in the community, she understands the needs of ordinary locals and has first-hand experience of caring for the disabled,” he said.

“She knows that under the current government disability care has been turned into a ‘business’ while originally under Labor it was designed as a safety net where citizens in need were treated as individuals, not just people in crisis who must fill out forms every year.

“Our proposal is to provide those in need with individualized packages designed together with a real person who would be answerable to the government.”

Ms David, who served as a police officer in NSW and holds a law degree, agreed.

“In 2016 we moved to Beechworth and we are forever grateful to the local police and volunteers who found our disabled son who was lost overnight in thick bushland,” she said.

“If elected I will be a strong advocate for proper care for the disabled, and an anti-corruption commission.”

Fitting memorial to honour Ian Jones

By MARK STEPHENS THE Friends of the Burke Museum Ian Jones memorial celebration last Saturday, ‘The Australian’ identity, was a resounding success and a fitting tribute to such a remarkable writer, historian and filmmaker who contributed so much to our understanding of what it means to be Australian.

The historic Beechworth Town Hall was filled to COVIDsafe capacity as the outstanding organist Sandra Williams played Irish melodies on the fully restored pipe organ which was first installed in 1886 not long after the famous Kelly gang siege at Glenrowan.

The historic “Ballad of the Kellys” was sung as a celebration of the daring deeds of Ned Kelly and his gang.

Dr Kate Sutherland, president of the Friends of the Burke Museum, welcomed the appreciative audience and explained that the event would be a celebration of Ian’s creative work, his support of Beechworth history and its heritage, the Burke Museum, and his outstanding contribution to the Australian Identity.

Well-known author and commentator, Peter FitzSimons spoke about his longstanding regard for Mr Jones as shown in his dedication

in “Ned Kelly - The Story of Australia’s Most Notorious Legend”.

“To Ian Jones, the doyen of all Kelly writers, who has studied the life and times of Ned Kelly for 70 of his 82 years,” Mr FitzSimons said.

“He, more than anyone, has kept the Kelly story alive in modern Australia and was unfailingly generous to me in the course of writing this book.

“I salute his passion. I deeply respect his scholarship.”

Darren Jones spoke about the wonderful years he spent helping his father research the Kelly saga and made particular reference to the unforgettable time when they were called in to identify Ned’s remains.

“Dad did not hesitate, as soon as he saw that a third toe was missing and a bullet wound on the left side he said, “yes, that is Ned Kelly”.

Elizabeth Jones spoke in a personal way about the happy times spent with her father at Beechworth exploring the hills and haunts where the Kelly gang had camped.

Dan Goonan remembered the amazing event when, with the help of Mr Jones, the four suits of Kelly armour were displayed with great acclaim in the Beechworth Town Hall.

Leadership opportunities for local young people

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE YOUNG people in the fire affected communities are eligible for several leadership programs, thanks to federal funding for local business The Mandela Project.

In the recent announcement by the Federal Government for their Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants, The Mandala Project received funding to run five eight-day leadership programs for young people in the fire affected communities of Alpine, Indigo, East Gippsland, Towong, Mansfield, Wangaratta and Wodonga over the next two years.

Five years since its inception, The Mandala Project has delivered a number of programs throughout the North East.

What started with a ‘one off ’ four-day Emerging Leader’s Summit, has grown into a business offering multi day father/son and mother/ daughter programs; four and eight-day leadership programs; Year 5 and 6 boys and girls programs; one day leadership workshops and a three day Trainee Development Program to name a few.

Mandala Project co-founder Anthony Nicholson the North East Victoria Youth L.E.A.D (or NEVYL) Program will “empower, connect and

further develop the personal and community leadership skills of individuals”.

“Our programs draw on experiential learning, teambased challenges, skills sessions and inspirational speakers to cultivate participant’s leadership capacity, emotional intelligence and to build their community networks,” he said.

“Our intention is to engage young adults in a meaningful, hands-on leadership experience with the expected outcome being they contribute to programs, policies and services that affect their lives and contribute to community recovery.

“Developing resilient and self-aware future leaders has immense value for rural communities.”

Twelve applicants aged between 18 to 26 years of age from across the seven shires will be eligible to participate in each of the programs.

The first of these is commencing on Thursday, April 28 with a four-day retreat in Bright.

Each program consists of an opening four-day retreat which includes interactive sessions, various guest speakers and a small group challenge; a three-day trip to Canberra to hear from inspirational speakers as well as time spent in the Tharwa Valley Forge; and then concluding with a one day wrap

Mr Nicholson said communities in the area have been “doing it tough” for the last couple of years.

“First it was the bushfires, then COVID, and then there has been a number of youth suicides,” he said.

“Programs that help de-

velop the skills and confidence of our young people, give them an opportunity to develop real social connections and encourage them to become more involved in their communities, are going to build more resilient communities’ long term.”

Indigo Shire Mayor Bernard Gaffney said that the document heralds a comprehensive analysis of facilities across the five major sports of football, netball, tennis, golf and cricket plus general community use of the beautiful area.

“This brings us to a position where we can identify and service needs now and into the future,” he said.

“Council will soon be able to use the final report to access grants for development and prioritize requests from stakeholders.

“At this stage we see community engagement as a priority so that the park can reach its full potential as an outstanding sporting and recreational facility.

“All interested should make a submission to Indigo Shire Council as soon as possible.”

Love Louder for flood relief IN February 2019, the Yackandandah Public Hall saw over 350 people flow through its doors in support of the local bushfire crisis throughout North East Victoria. ‘Let’s Love Loud’ was an event curated by local singer/songwriter, Candice McLeod and raised over $13,000.

On Friday, April 1 - just two years later- the Yackandandah community will come together yet again, to raise much needed funds for the flood-affected communities of New South Wales.

This time, the event urges folks to ‘Love Louder’, with natural disasters sadly becoming more frequent and devastating the world over.

Curator, Candice McLeod, local songwriter and founder of ‘Two Little Troubadours’ boutique event company, shares her passion for the event and why it is so important to support community near and far.

“On the evening that Lismore, NSW literally submerged underwater, I was receiving social media notifications from multiple friends up north, in a widespread call for help,” Candice said.

“The following day, it became very clear that sufficient on-the-ground help

wasn’t coming for those in immediate need. “ Friends of mine were stranded without homes, clothes, food or any way of physically getting these basic necessities to them.

“Disaster management literally landed in the hands of the victims and nearby communities, who personally deployed volunteers in a desperate attempt to secure safety to those in emergent situations.”

She said Northern Rivers musician and influencer, Ziggy Alberts, made a personal call-out for financial donations, quickly followed by a team of pilots making on-the-ground airdrops containing medical and food supplies to stranded local communities.

“Other individual friends of mine set up crowd-funding campaigns and personally transported supplies to the few communities they could access by car.

On the night they lost their home, Lismore duo and dear friends, ‘The Hussy Hicks’, shared a real-time video to the public of their dangerous roof-top kayak escape,” Candice said.

“If this wasn’t enough, one half of the duo, Julz Parker, also made a boat rescue to their elderly

neighbour - also stranded on his roof whilst the waters rose, with no SES help available until daylight.

“Unfortunately, this is not just a one-off story.

“These horrific accounts of friends in need keep flowing in, alongside the lack of support where it is needed most.

“There just weren’t, and still aren’t, enough hands and hearts behind these suffering communities, desperately trying to rebuild their lives after the floods.

“It is my hope, that ‘Let’s Love Louder’ connects us all on a human level, sparking change and support through intimate songwriting and story telling.

“We’re all in this together, with a deep responsibility to take care of each other, and the planet we call home.”

The ‘Let’s Love Louder’ Relief Concerts kicks off at 7pm at the Yackandandah Public Hall, featuring This Way North; Benny Williams; Yours, Georgina; Julian James; & Candice McLeod with all proceeds going to flood relief.

NBN fixed wireless to get better INDI’S rural communities will have access to a higher speed NBN network following a $480 million investment by the Liberal and Nationals Government in the 2022-23 Federal Budget.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher said the investment in NBN Co’s non-commercial fixed wireless network will significantly improve the quality of services provided over the NBN fixed wireless and satellite networks.

“This means more people can be served by NBN fixed wireless, it means higher speed services on the NBN fixed wireless network, and it means households and business customers can use higher amounts of data.

“The upgrade will expand the fixed wireless footprint coverage by up to 50 per cent, enabling 120,000 additional premises to access fixed wireless services instead of Sky Muster satellite services,” Mr Fletcher said.

This upgrade will see NBN offer new higher-speed services to the fixed wireless network: 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) to all 750,000 premises able to access the new, expanded coverage footprint, and a 250 Mbps service will be available to 85 per cent of premises.

It also means higher

speeds during the “network busy hour” - the time of day when there are more internet users, typically around 8pm.

With some NBN satellite users being moved to fixed wireless during this, other NBN satellite users will see improved internet performance due to fewer users.

Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education, Senator Bridget McKenzie said the investment would drive major improvements to regional telecommunications quality, helping to bridge the digital divide many Australian communities often face.

“The NBN is a critical and core part of our national infrastructure and economy, enabling employment, connecting families, and supporting business, including in the electorate of Indi,” she said.

“This investment provides a comprehensive response to recommendation six of the 2021 Regional Telecommunications Review and is one part of a suite of measures we will announce as part of the government’s response to the Review in coming weeks.

“Regions across Australia made their voices heard through the Regional Telecommunications Review

SPEED BOOST: The government says NBN fixed wireless speeds will get better in Indi with a $480 million investment in its 2022/23 Federal Budget.

Indi independent MP Helen Haines welcomed the announcement from the government.

“It is a major issue in Indi and across regional and rural Australia and I have been calling for more investment for years,” Dr Haines said.

“It’s more than a year since the government announced the NBN was ‘built and fully operational’.

“Here in Indi we have known that was in no way true, and this announcement shows the government knew too.

“What today’s announcement does not do is get rid of the government’s terrible policy of forcing regional councils to stump

up hundreds of millions of dollars to finish the NBN build through its Regional Co-Investment Fund.

“People in the cities aren’t being asked to pay this money, and people in the regions shouldn’t be expected to pay twice to fix the government’s mistakes.”

Dr Haines said the latest announcement includes promises of faster speeds,

but regional Australians have been promised faster speeds that failed to materialise.

“That’s why I introduced my Faster Internet for Regional Australia Bill which would force the telcos to provide 25 Mbps as the minimum speed on average at all times,” she said.

“And it would put those standards in actual law so they’re impossible to dodge.”

Spreading the message on ecological regeneration STEPHEN Curtain was born in Melbourne, came to North East Victoria and the Australian Alps in 1990 and moved to Beechworth in 2000 and the town has been home on and off since then.

What’s your job?

Ecology film production, consultancy work to regenerate Earth’s biosystems with the organisation Regenerate Earth (www. regenerate-earth.org/) with a focus to naturally and safely cool the planet; regenerate healthy soils and nutrient-dense with healthy foods.

I have more than 20 years teaching outdoor education in alpine communities too.

What brought you to this role?

Early trips to bushwalk, ski and paddle into the bush started the curiosity.

Work stints in photo-journalism, BBC natural history film production, field guiding in wild natural systems including Antarctica and an eyeball-to-eyeball Humpback whale encounter plus learning First Nations knowledge.

What do you love about your job?

It isn’t ‘work’ as such - just an extension of what I love and what I’d be doing anyway.

What do you do in the community?

Contributing to and empowering others to be the best versions of themselves living in balance with and respecting our natural systems.

What’s the most important community issue for you?

The alpine community and its neighbours from mountains to paddock and plate is largely because of healthy soil biology and wise ecological land management. Un-

Fund natural climate solutions workshops, incentives and networks to empower communities everywhere to co-design and author natural food systems, urban agriculture through healthy soil biology.

It’s happening now. With colleague Peter Leppert and others, we co-organised Making Australian Agriculture Sustainable conference (sustainableag.org.au). Charlie Massy was the keynote speaker.

Deputy chair of Farmers for Climate Action Charlie Prell and others said ‘don’t wait for government, media or perfection’ to rebuild food, soil, water and climate systems.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Regenerating Earth’s biosystems to ensure water, food and climate security and therefore humanity’s future by way of building natural capital, landscape buffering and resilience.

These can drastically reduce the

number of climate refugees and conflict.

‘Why would you show him that?

Whales and their poo fertilise the oceans and therefore help to create natural seeding of clouds to cool the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

In turn, polar storm systems snow and rain on the Australian Alps, less than one per cent of the Australian continent that waters 42 per cent of Australian agricultural productivity.

The Australian Alps are also ‘soil mountains’ in some case tens-ofthousands-years-old.

They’ve been shaped by ice on Kosciuszko and lashed by polar maritime-borne winds and snows to give us ‘the liquid heart’ of this continent.

Without these influences, the Murray-Darling wouldn’t receive an average base flow of 40-70 per cent and therefore food us and life itself.

This is how whales connect to sustaining us and I’d like to learn more.

An action-packed day of music and family fun at ‘Spring Ditch’

By CORAL COOKSLEY A DAY of music and family fun with a big difference for a new event ‘Spring Ditch’ on Saturday, April 9 from 11am to 8pm is tipped by organisers to be a sell-out well before the close of ticket sales.

Being held by Beechworth Music Festival (BMF) productions at the Stanley sports ground within the village’s recreation reserve just 10 kilometres from Beechworth, music lovers will be able to tune in to a great line up of musical talent besides a variety of fun activities as well as raise funds for community causes.

BMF founders Lex Fletcher and Rikki Raadsveld said the event is a nod to the old sports day in Stanley that ran every year on New Year’s Day for 140 years until it stopped in the mid 90s.

Lex said the event had been lucky to score their headline bands as a fortnight ago popular band The Meanies supported an event at Geelong stadium with a crowd 35,000 people.

Among fun activities will be wood chopping displays, apple and spoon races, pony rides, roving performers and heaps more.

“It’s not a sports day but is being run in the spirit of the family one that used to be held in the village,” Rikki said.

“We’re displaying old photographs and memorabilia too.”

“The Stanley community has been very supportive

and actively involved in helping with the event.”

Lex said among BMF’s attractions to the village included its small feel and surrounding beauty while event food vendors are local to Stanley.

“All our fundraising activities on the day goes to four local community groups being the Stanley CFA, the sports grounds committee, volunteer association Stanley Rural Community Inc (SRCI) for the post office and the Athenaeum,” he said.

Donations will be asked for at the gate too.

Among musicians are the BMF Rock School’s young band with the group kicking off the day, long time indie Australian punk rock band The Meanies, and Emilee South and her band with their dynamite vocals, fierce guitar playing and charging rock and roll.

Other bands included Colonel Vipers Whipstick Band and Steel Wheels that pumps out rock with a country tinge while local DJ Jane Doe will keep great tunes and vibes humming.

MCs for the day will be Beechworth local John Walker while another is story teller Watty Thompson with musical accompaniment.

“We’ve only had the tickets online for two weeks and two thirds have sold already with only four weeks to go,” Rikki said.

Pennant The Division 1 Scratch Pennant side took on Wodonga at Yarrawonga going down in a tight contest 3/2.

Next week the side takes on Thurgoona at Myrtleford.

The section one handicap side hosted at Beechworth.

Results were Tarrawingee defeated Myrtleford 4/1 and Wodonga defeated Bright 4/1.

The section three handicap side travelled to Thurgoona to take on Myrtleford and unfortunately went down 4/1.

Women’s Challenge The Beechworth-Yackandandah women’s challenge was played last Wednesday at Beechworth.

The Yack women were keen to regain the trophy but Beechworth prevailed and retained it for another year.

Beechworth 190 points to Yackandandah 136.

Glenda Marshall took the A grade honours with 26, runner up was Angela Bishop (Yack) with 19 on a countback from Deb Tully 19.

Nada Guyatt won the B grade with 25 points, runner up was MJ Kane with 23 on a countback from Lyn Brown 23.

Nearest the pin on the 7th went to new member Jacqui Cato, nearest the pin on the 10th went to Deb Tully and Helen Gyre (Yack) on the 10th.

Longest drives went to Glenda Marshall (A grade) and Suzanne Parrington (Yack) (B Grade).

After the 12 hole stableford everyone tucked into a delicious lunch.

There’s always great camaraderie between the two clubs, and Beechworth look forward to defending the win next year in Yackandandah.

Friday Twilight Nineteen players took part in the Friday Twilight last week in relatively hot conditions.

Gail Smith won the Wom-

en’s section with 20 pts and a NTP on the 5th hole.

Glenda Marshall was runner up with 16 pts, closely followed by Linda McIntosh with 15pts.

Stuart McIntosh won the Men’s section with 15 pts closely followed by Ric Pierce 14 pts.

In the Team’s Event it is still relatively tight so next week’s results will decide the final team order.

Currently Callaway on 205 pts ( Ric Pierce, Lyn Brown and Gail Smith) are ahead of Titiliest (195 pts).
