Hold up on courthouse project INDIGO Shire Council remains on track to bring the Beechworth Historic Courthouse - Kelly Trials Project to life despite a set back with creative design agency Arterial Design that last week announced it will no longer deliver the project. The Melbourne-based exhibition design company had won the $680,000 contract from a pool of 17 tenders in February last year to undertake the exhibition curation, design, construction and installation to create a word-class heritage tourism experience. Fund each contributed $500,000 towards the venture that goes beyond the Kelly story. A joint statement from council and Arterial Design reads, “Indigo Shire Council and Arterial Design reviewed the project’s curatorial and creative direction and agreed there was a divergence of interpretative methodology and creative approach.”
SPECIAL of the WEEK
Council thanked Arterial Design for its enthusiasm and efforts while Arterial Design said it looked forward to seeing council bring the project to life. Shire chief executive Trevor Ierino said great progress had been made with completed research and information gathered for the project’s first stage with the venture still going forward to progress to the next one. “We’ve had to slightly change direction but the project will be better for the wonderful stories and information that has emerged
during the consultation workshops that were held last year,” he said. While seeking a new exhibition experience consultancy to deliver the project which will be pushed back with a completion date from July this year to mid 2023, Mr Ierino said the project will be delivered within the original budget. Mr Ierino said the completed exhibition based on the trials associated with Ned Kelly, the Kelly family and their associates as well as other characters and stories from the courthouse
with its significant history in the North East will be a word-class heritage tourism experience. “The next stage of further research, curatorial work and story interpretation will build on the rich input gathered from many important community and expert stakeholders over the course of 2021,” he said. With a significant investment in cultural heritage interpretation and tourism, Mr Ierino said a massive increase in cultural heritage tourism to the region is expected.
