Santas helpers kindle Christmas spirit

The next edition of the Advertiser will be published on Friday, January 14th 2022

By CORAL COOKSLEY SANTA’S helpers have kindled Christmas spirit in Beechworth with decorations placed around the town centre. Colourful timber Santas and Christmas trees with a little history of their own have brightened up main streets for the festive season since positioned two weeks ago. The Chamber of Commerce that took over the Christmas decorating project in 2015 revamped the decorations from original designs made by a small town Christmas committee and the Men’s Shed. Chamber members worked with the Men’s Shed to make the trees bigger as well as cutting new heritage Santa patterns. Beechworth business owner Elizabeth Mason and former Chamber of Commerce president at the time said the decorations had been painted by Beechworth Correctional Centre prisoners and then hung along Camp and Ford streets. “They are unique to our town and a result of a community team effort, and we love that they are not commercial and suit our heritage streetscape,” she said. Beechworth’s Fay Robinson said decorations created Christmas spirit in the town while her husband Charlie said the community had noticed with favourable comments.

Baarmutha Park truce

OFF-LEASH dog walking will continue at Baarmutha Park, Beechworth at least for the next three months as council acts as peacemaker between dog walkers and golfers. The issue was first raised officially in late 2018 when a review of off-leash dog walking areas in Beechworth was undertaken in response to concerns expressed by the Beechworth Golf Club about the behaviour of dogs

and dog walkers at the declared off-leash dog area at the Baarmutha Park/Beechworth Golf Club. After an extensive public consultation process revealed that the clear prefer-

ence from the community for off-leash dog walking remained Baarmutha Park over council’s proposed alternative Wallace Park, councillors voted in favour of going back to the opposing parties and working to resolve their differences. The report tabled at last week’s Indigo Shire Council monthly public meeting

proposed council facilitate discussions between the golf club and representatives of the wider community/dog walkers, and increase the presence of compliance officers at Baarmutha Park over the next three months. This action would be facilitated by an Indigo Shire Council officer to ensure an agreement or memoran-

dum of understanding was reached between the warring parties which could articulate the expectations regarding behaviour and conduct at the site. It could also capture agreed infrastructure improvements on site to be implemented with council support. ■ Continued page 3
