A STRONG turn out by the Chiltern community helped the local fire brigade celebrate its 150th anniversary last Saturday. Chiltern Fire Brigade captain Shannon Beacom said around 150 to 300 people had lined the streets for a brigade parade. A brigade procession with proud fire brigade members, pipe band, the Scots School Albury and classic cars made its way down Conness Street past the old fire brigade station to Lake Anderson where a hive of activity took

place including brigade displays from Rutherglen, Chiltern and Wangaratta. The brigade started as Chiltern Urban Fire Brigade in November 1873 then Chiltern had two brigades from 1921 including a bush fire brigade until December 2001 when they amalgamated. He said among displays had been

a ‘Show and Shine’ by the Murray Heritage Motorists Car Club from Wodonga as well as the brigade’s juniors, who partake in demonstrations in rural championships across the state. Mr Beacom said service awards for five to 65 years were presented by CFA (Country Fire Authority) Chief Officer Jason Heffernan. Chiltern Fire Brigade member Adrian Gray was awarded a medal for his 65 years of service while Russell Martin, who is still an active member of the brigade, received a

medal for 50 years of service. “Members Gary Richardson and Chris Segrave received national emergency medals for work in the 2019 black summer bushfires as well,” captain Beacom said. A fundraising dinner and a dance was held at the town’s memorial hall later in the night. “It was a fantastic day and great to see the community come together along with brigades from across the district joining in to help celebrate,” Mr Beacom said. ■ Continued page 2
