Burke Museum welcome boost

BURKE Museum’s renowned collections display and security throughout the Historic Precinct will be boosted thanks to $89,900 in funding from the State Government.

The funding will enable the museum’s display cabinetry to be extended and CCTV will be installed throughout the precinct.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to have more of the museum’s collections on display, as well as to upgrade the security of our heritage spaces,” Burke Museum and Cultural Heritage manager Cameron Auty said.

The funding is part of the $4 million Regional Collections Access Program initiative which will support 36 museums, galleries and cultural organisations, funding capital works to

enable them to attract touring exhibitions, borrow and display prominent artworks and better care for their collections.

It means more visitors and stronger futures for much-loved institutions with flow-on benefits for local businesses in regional areas according to the State Government.

The Regional Collections Access Program is administered through Regional Arts Victoria, in partnership with Creative Victoria, Austral-

ian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria, Public Galleries Association of Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Rotary changeover reflects on another busy year

CLOSE to 30 Rotarians, friends and guests last week gathered at the George Kerferd Hotel for this year’s Beechworth Rotary Club changeover dinner with Stanley’s Patricia Broom taking up the reins for the next 12 months as president.

Beechworth Secondary College’s Ms Broom, who was unable to attend the evening, said as a principal of a small rural town high school such as in Beechworth, has given her insight into what it means to belong to a community and how there are many ways to build connections within in it.

“It also highlights greater possibilities where the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns showed glimpses of how much is possible,” she said.

Ms Broom said Rotary is about supporting a community, locally and globally as well as building connections and tapping into member’s skills and experience.

“Volunteering is now seen as something more people are interested in and my vision for the club is hoping to find ways to offer this opportunity to the wider community, and to engage younger people in our town,” she said.

“Beginning a Rotaract group (junior Rotary) would be fantastic, as we need to

make use of the outstanding skills and caring I see in young people at the school each day where this would link students to others around the world.”

“There are many ways Rotary can work within a community.”

In a roundup of club projects for the past year, outgoing president Larry Goldsworthy said the club had clocked up significant achievements including the $2000 Jack Tully Scholarship awarded to Arwen Cropley to help with university studies, an annual cash award to the secondary college and local primary schools, as well as support for the inaugural “Under the Pines” mini youth music festival held in January, support of exchange student Stanley’s Emile Vincent and to host an inbound student in 2022-23 for six months together with Appin Park Wangaratta Rotary Club, and the selection of a Rotary Youth Leadership Award candidate, Laura Bell.

Australia Day celebrations had also been supported while seven markets at Queen Victoria Park, barbecues at the monthly Beechworth Farmers market, lunch for B2B participants, and barbecue breakfasts for the Zaidees Foundation and Tour De Cure ride.

The presentation to Mr Van Aiken had been delayed from 2020 due to COVID-19 impacts.

Mr Goldsworthy presented a certificate of appreciation and a bouquet of flowers to Ms Browne in recognising her contribution to the Rotary Club between 2015 and 2020.

Beechworth’s Beryl Strang received flowers to acknowledge her support for her husband John over the term of his 18-month club presidency during COVID impacts and restrictions.

Changes to pandemic orders THE Victorian Government will make what it says are “modest and sensible” changes to pandemic orders from 11.59pm this Friday, June 24 to allow Victorians to live safely with COVID-19 while reducing transmission and hospitalisations.

Minister for Health, Martin Foley, said advice from the Acting Chief Health Officer will allow some key measures to be safely lifted, but others should remain until the end of winter.

In line with the recent AHPPCstatement, masks will no longer be required at airports, but must be worn on planes.

They must aslo still be worn in hospitals and care facilities, as well as on public transport, taxis and ride shares.

Positive cases must still isolate for seven days from the day they took their test but may now leave home to drive a household member directly to or from education or work without leaving their vehicle.

They can also leave home to get medical care, a COVID-19 test, or in an emergency, including the risk of harm.

“To continue to protect the most vulnerable through winter, workers who interact with a vulnerable person will still require three COVID-19 vaccine doses,” Mr Foley said.

“This includes residential aged care and disability care, healthcare, and custodial and

emergency services, including police.

“Government imposed third dose mandates in education, food distribution, meat and seafood processing and quarantine accommodation sectors will be lifted.

“In line with other jurisdictions around Australia, vaccination policies will be the responsibility of individual workplaces.

“As almost 95 per cent of Victorians 12 years and older have had two COVID-19 doses, rules requiring general workers to work from home, unless they are double-vaccinated, will be lifted.

“Employers will still be able to set their own workplace conditions.”

Mr Foley said visitor caps to care facilities, including residential aged care and disability, are being removed, with residents able to see any number of people as long as they test negative on a rapid antigen test that day.

If a test is unavailable, a person can only be present for limited reasons such as end-oflife visits.

Centres may introduce their own visitor rules to respond to local risk.

The Minister’s Statement of Reasons and the Acting CHO’s advice will be published on the Department of Health’s website.

QAnon infiltration a danger to democracy

By CORAL COOKSLEY A CAPTIVATED audience listened to a disturbing insight into internet conspiracy cults as ‘QAnon and On’ author Van Badham described her shocking discoveries at a Winterwords session held in the Beechworth Town Hall last week. w The author explained the rise of QAnon and the proliferation of disinformation on a global scale and described her journey after being viciously attacked online in 2013 that raised her curiosity to find out the reasons why and also who was behind QAnon which w led to an undercover investigation for her research.

QAnon is a radical, far right extremist political movement that uses the internet and uses communities on the internet for various political purposes v that threatens democracy according to Ms Badham.

The book draws links between trolls and conspiracy cults and disinformation such as organised political actors behind the January 6 attack on the Capitol in Washington, to covid vaccine protests in Melbourne and around the country.

“It’s an important story that people need to engage with, Van did it at her own expense to infiltrate to get an understanding, then offered us that insight,” he said.

Beechworth’s Nadia David who interviewed Ms Badham said unless people in some way know about it, people have no idea of the bizarre conspiracy theories.

“It drives people to do violent things and has infiltrated Australian politics; that was clear in the latest election campaign and an example was the Trump election too,” she said.

Ms David said conspiracy and disinformation cut across many areas such as politics, health, medicine and education.

“I think the audience may have been stunned tonight,” she said.

“At a certain point there are people around you who have the craziest ideas and it’s very hard to have a conversation about where those ideas came from,” she said.

“An example is COVID vaccination that brought out all the craziest ideas and I could see some of the things that Van has talked and written about in those people who are around us.”

Ms Mansel Lees said it’s hard to think about how to stop it from continuing as they gather a community and push in a direction where it’s not initially picked up and then it gathers momentum,” she said.

Ms Badham - a journalist, international award-winning writer and theatremaker - said her book has given people an awareness of what’s going on.

“It’s terrifying and affects all communities,” she said.

“If you have a mobile phone connection you are vulnerable, and if you’re feeling emotional don’t go on the internet as it’s not going to help you,” she said.

George Briscoe Kerferd Oration fast approaching

By CORAL COOKSLEY MAVERICK, free radical and challenger of the status quo in education Melbourne-based Peter Hutton will deliver this year’s annual George Briscoe Kerferd Oration that also marks its 20th anniversary.

His oration titled ‘Australian Education: How did we get here and where are we going?’ will be prew sented on Sunday, July 31 with an 11am start at Beechworth’s George Kerferd Hotel and via Livestream.

Mr Hutton co-founded Future Schools - a global collaboration of innovators aligned to transform learning communities and co-evolve the future of education that has more than a 100 schools as member of its community with ten of the most innovative ones in the world.

Kerferd Oration chair Jess Oldmeadow said the radical educator had successfully worked ‘around the system’ and ‘within the system’ to create new educational opportunities for students.

“He recognises that the ‘system’ is a massive, slow moving beast, but that we need to be making changes without delay to meet student need,” w she said.

“Peter is the ideal professional to address education at a community level of “what can we do right now”, while providing insight on how we w got here, what education looks like today and what it could potentially look like in the future.”

“Our education system impacts our health and wellbeing, socio economic status, ability to engage in work and societal norm and is really something everyone should be thinking about,” she said.

“Education has been a long considered topic for the Kerferd Oration committee, but now has presented itself as the perfect time for it to be delivered.”

“After covid’s disruption, we - as an entire nation - have seen new ways of educating - and working, that have made people more aware of the potential for change.”

“We would like the audience to explore this further, both at a community level, as well as a systematic national level.”

The Kerferd Oration has developed into a unique community event that has strong, regional, state-wide and international following.

With the book a focus among reading for youngsters as part of the Winterwords Festival, Beechworth library officer Anne Shanley said some fun activities had centred on mice.

Rebecca Spiteri said having a good library in town offered an interesting environment for her children to have a morning out where her husband could join in as well being a Saturday.

“It’s been a great experience coming to the library as we’re new to the area and have made connections in the community,” she said.

“It’s a terrific way to get to meet people and make friends, and it’s been such a fun time today.”

Quercus Beechworth forges ahead with refreshed strategy

By CORAL COOKSLEY INTEGRITY, community, curiosity, fun and inclusion is the new set of values launched by Quercus Beechworth’s with its latest five-year strategic plan.

“Our new values reflect who we are as a community organisation,” board chair Ms Julia Vesval said.

Ms Vesval said the new strategic document will guide Quercus Beechworth from its refreshed clear purpose and direction, and help deliver its vision for an empowered and connected Beechworth and surrounds.

“It means our organisation will remain relevant to the changing needs of community members, volunteers, and the Quercus staff team,” she said.

“By aligning purpose and vision, we are in a good position to meet the demands of our community.”

Ms Vesval said voices of community members, external stakeholders, Quercus Beechworth volunteers, the office team and board members helped shape the 2022-2026 strategic plan.

At the heart of the community like other neighbourhood houses and community centres, she said people are brought together to connect, learn and contribute to their local community through social, educational, recreational and support activities.

Ms Vesval said two social enterprises, the Quercus

Beechworth Bookshop and Community Op Shop as well as the community garden offered volunteering opportunities too.

“It’s a way for community members to engage with one another and make new friends, gain skills and confidence and is available to anyone in the community from school-aged students through to senior citizens,” she said.

Quercus Beechworth manager Paivi Watson said Quercus Beechworth will be working towards having a large and growing team of committed volunteers where they can take up a range of activities that support organisational goals.

“We offer volunteers meaningful opportunities that are widely acknowledged for helping them to learn new skills and share existing ones, boost social connections, build pathways to employment, and overall help to make a difference,” she said.

Regular program activities, classes and events have ramped up too where Ms Vesval said staff are thrilled to bring back crowd favourites such as the Repair Café and flea market.

“We have introduced activities that foster youth engagement as well,” she said.

“We are a communityled, responsive organisation, and we here to make a positive difference in our community.”

Healthy hectares program takes off in the North East SMALL rural property owners around the local region will gain knowledge and skills to apply best practice land management principles to their land with a program that kicks off on Sunday, July 24.

The HE Healthy Hectares North East program will explore fundamental principles and knowledge of sustainable, best-practice land management through face-to-face field days, online workshops and a booklet designed to provide information relevant to North East Victoria.

The project adapts the Healthy Hectares program previously developed by Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and Euroa Arboretum to the North East region of Victoria with the delivery of a field days series for landholders.

Conservation and land management educator, Sue Brunskill will introduce key topics - property planning, soil, livestock, pest plants and animals, water and biodiversity as well as a Healthy Hectares North East program overview.

“This is a great opportunity for small rural property owners to learn best practice land management principles and get help from experts to apply them on their property,’’ he said.

“Participants will have the chance to work with experts and create a whole farm plan which helps them build their property capacity while fulfilling their dreams and aspirations.”

“Workshops and field days give people a great chance to network and see how others are managing

their properties too.”

Mr Thorpe said by attending information sessions, landholders will gain a good understanding of how the program works, what they will learn over the next 12 months and how new knowledge can be applied.

A collaboration between Wodonga Urban Landcare Network, Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups, Ovens Landcare Network and the Mid Ovens Landcare Consortium, the program has been funded by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Textile artist to deliver next MDHAS talk A LOCAL award-winning quilter and textile artist will be the guest speaker at the next Mayday Hills Art Society (MDHAS) talk being held on Sunday, July 3.

Beechworth’s Donna Hughes said her relationship with textiles began at a very early age where making toys and dolls clothes, knitting, macramé and sewing were a significant part of her childhood.

“I made my first quilt at 13 years old, with my second one aged 15 receiving “highly commended” at the 1981 Melbourne Show in the adult’s section,” she said.

In 1984 Donna’s career in the clothing industry took off with training at the Melbourne College of Textiles.

The next 10 years in the industry in Melbourne as a designer and patternmaker led to the opening of a business as a freelance patternmaker and design and production consultant that spanned 15 years before Donna and her family shifted to Beechworth in 2006.

She said during this time, the need to create textile pieces grew.

“Seeing my first “real” quilt exhibition in 2004 was the catalyst for seeing

the quilting world in a different light,” she said.

“Learning began in earnest with a wide range off techniques explored and integrated into my quilting practices.”

Donna’s skills have led to more than 250 quilts being produced - from bed quilts to wall hangings and everything in between.

The event starting at 3pm is being held in the MDHAS building located in Kurrajong Way, Mayday Hills near the Asylum Ghost Tours Bijou Theatre.

Entry to the talk is open to both Art Society members as well as the general public with entry by a gold coin donation.

Clocking up festival success

By CORAL COOKSLEY SCORES are on the board for this year’s Winterwords Festival as delighted organisers harnessed another successful event last week celebrating words of every shape and form.

The five day festival in its second year held from June 15 to 19 drew audiences to a variety of more than 25 entertaining sessions that stretched from celebrity author talks, nature journalling, poetry, play reading, an art exhibition, an internet conspiracy theory talk to a film producer presentation, karaoke, story slam and everything in between.

With numbers up this year, creative director Janet Tweedie said more people knew about the festival while wellknown crime fiction authors Chris Hammer, Sulari Gentill, and Margaret Hickey, and jjournalist Van Badham attracted keen listeners to their sessions.

“The Artwords exhibition had a good roll up too over the five days and we will continue to use the Memorial Hall Supper Room for this showcase as it was a big hit,” said.

Ms Tweedie said she thought festivalgoers had been impressed by the range of different sessions offered

over the event.

“People loved the use of our wonderful heritage buildings such as the Town Hall and Old Courthouse,” she said.

“They loved the community feel combined with big names which makes Winterwords Festival what it is - for the community, by the community.”

With planning underway for the next year’s event, Ms Tweedie said many guests had such a great time they were keen to come back.

“I’m looking forward to extending our reach and welcoming attendees from further afield,” she said.

The creative director said festivalgoers had been given more exciting and fun opportunities to think, talk, listen, sing, tell a story, see art, watch a play, draw, write, and meet others while enjoying the gorgeous winter weather that Beechworth put on.

As there has been a greater following on Instagram and Facebook, she said word about the event had spread.

“More people now know about us and will be back next year and there is something for everyone,” she said.

WARMTH of mulled wine with a hearty vegetable soup on offer too added to a cosy get-together for around 25 Winterword festivalgoers last Friday night at Beechworth Books.

The casual, informal event gave book lovers a chance to mingle with well-known crime fiction authors Chris Hammer and Sulari Gentill as well as local crime fiction novelist Margaret Hickey and other local authors.

Beechworth resident Virginia Mansel Lees said she enjoyed chatting to different authors about their books over a glass of mulled wine.

“I had to buy a couple of books as I couldn’t resist,” she said.

Beechworth Book’s Charles Dean said the idea of the evening had been for people to have a chat with each other and authors, and enjoy each other’s company.

“People really enjoyed themselves,” he said.

First People’s Assembly set tone on landmark Treaty Bill THE First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria made a historic address to the Victorian Parliament on Wednesday on the importance of Treaty, setting the tone for debate on the nation leading Treaty Authority Bill.

Assembly co-chairs Aunty Geraldine Atkinson and Marcus Stewart addressed the Legislative Assembly of the Victorian Parliament in both English and in language, following the introduction of members of the First Peoples’ Assembly.

Members of Victoria’s democratically elected First Peoples’ Assembly were present in the Parliaw ment Chamber.

The presence of the First People’s Assembly in the chamber symbolised the beginning of a new pathway that honours and acknowledges the truth of the past and forges the way to a brighter shared future for all Victorians.

The address follows Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams attending a First Peoples’ Assembly chamber meet-

ing on Gadubanud Country of the Eastern Maar people earlier this month to sign the Treaty Authority Agreement with the Assembly, representing true partnership on our path to Treaty.

The assembly negotiated with the Labor Government to develop the Treaty Authority, which is the ‘independent umpire’ that will oversee treaty negotiations between the government and Aboriginal Victorians.

Minister Williams introduced the Treaty Authority Bill into the Victorian Parliament on June 7 after an agreement was reached between the Victorian Government and the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

First Peoples’ Assembly co-chair Aunty Geraldine Atkinson said the journey to Treaty needs to be guided by First Peoples.

“This agreement we’ve reached with the government reflects what our people want - it’s an umpire that they can trust because it will be led by First Peoples, be grounded in our culture, lore and law and be completely independent from government,” Aunty Geraldine said.

ARTISTIC: Beechworth’s Dore Stockhausen worked as a goldsmith for more than 30 years before taking up art.

Goldsmith turns to art DORE Stockhausen was born in Mainz, a ‘small’ city of around 200,000 people in Germany.

The historically significant city had been founded by the Romans in the first century BC. Following a move to Australia, Dore and her husband lived in East Gippsland for 30 years before a shift to Beechworth close to 11 months and love living in the town.

What’s your job?

I am an artist and paint abstract paintings.

What brought you to this role?

Life experience.

For more than 30 years I worked as a goldsmith and it was time for a change.

Now I am planning to paint for the next 30 years.

What do you love about your job?

Everything!

Firstly, the thinking process and then putting paint onto the canvas.

It’s the ever-changing image in front of me that keeps me fascinated until it’s time to stop.

I love how I can manipulate the mood of a painting by choosing different colours.

The process is most important to me.

The outcome is for the viewer, and I also love my solitude.

What do you do in the community?

We are renovating our home and studios up at Mayday Hills and l have been painting too, so I have had little time to get involved in community

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Weeds. Especially the blackberries.

Huge areas are covered by this prickly pest not allowing native vegetation to grow.

One example is the Lake Sambell to Lake Kerferd walking track in the Historic Park not far out of town besides along the Stanley Road near there.

It’s bad in many places and very noticeable since moving here.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Eat more blackberries.

The problem seems too huge to be addressed by community groups only.

It would be great to see a blackberry eradication program lead by a government body.

It’s an ongoing process over a few

years, but with some commitment and dedication it can be done.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

The war between Russia and the Ukrainian troubles me greatly.

Putin’s delusion of grandeur is so dangerous and not just for the Ukraine.

My heart goes out for all the people impacted by this conflict.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

That person would be my dad who died eight years ago.

He never came to visit us in Australia.

I would take him for a drive down to Barry Falls, then continue to Eldorado and finish the day back in one of Beechworth’s pubs with a glass of wine or two.

He was a great lover of wine and would enjoy tasting wine from our local region.

Why would you show him Barry Falls and continue to Eldorado?

The landscape and flora along that drive is so uniquely Australian and beautiful.

The native pines and openness of the bush are very different to any German forests.

An added bonus is the interesting history of goldmining and bushrangers.

What book are you reading?

A novel by German author Sven Regener called ‘Glitterschmitter’- an enjoyable story about art, friendship, treason and love.

ON Sunday, in beautiful conditions an Ambrose was played at the B3echowrth Golf Club.

And it was not your normal Ambrose either.

The course was played in reverse order - 18th green to the 17th green, 17th green to the 16th green and so on.

The winners of the day were Andy Croome, Jamie Dolny and Dylan Pool with a 64/58, runners up were, Linda and Stuart McIntosh and Darren Edwards with 71/59.5, in third was Jacob

and Zane Howard and Brian Cropley with 74/62.

Nearest the pins went to Jacob Howard on the 9th and Andy Croome on the 16th greens.

This Sunday in the first round of the Men’s Championships.

It will also be the qualifying for the top eight to play in the handicap match play championship.

Club Championships are the best three out of four rounds, so it would be good to see a great turnout.

If you can’t make one round, that’s ok as you can still win it.

See you all out there on Sunday at 11:30 for 12noon hit off.

Glenda Marshall (18) was the winner with 33 points.

Gail Smith (22) was runner up with 32, followed by Nada Guyatt (28) with 31.

Bushies back in the black over Bulldogs BEECHWORTH’S senior footy side ended their two game losing streak on Saturday at Thurgoona Oval, coming out better off against the Bulldogs in front of their home crowd 15.5 (95) to 10.9 (69).

The Bushies came out with intent, kicking five goals in the opening term to Thurgoona’s three, but the Bulldogs surged, producing a 4.2 second quarter to lead Beechworth by eight point by half-time.

Beechworth weathered the assault, flipping the script on Thurgoona to push to the front in the third term and accelerated, a nine goal second half putting the Bulldogs away once and for all.

Kayde Surrey couldn’t seem to miss in front of the big sticks, snagging a seven goal haul and earning him best on ground for the victorious Bushrangers.

The backs were also recognised for their hard work, with Brent Ryan and Angus Parker also among the best.

The win keeps the Bushies in the top four, one game clear of Yackandandah ahead of their clash with ladder leaders Chiltern tomorrow at Baarmutha Park.

The match against Chiltern marks Beechworth’s inaugural indigenous round, with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony to be conducted Bangerang traditional owner, Uncle Darren ‘Dozer’ Atkinson at 12.20pm.

The Beechworth reserves had a tougher time against the Bulldogs, blown away in the third term to go down 5.2 (32) to 15.10 (100).

The Bushrangers were leading at quarter time, but Thurgoona found their feet and took the game away from the visitors, limiting Beechworth to just a minor score for the second half.

Midfielder Scott Howe was named best on ground, with Kade Parkinson leading the goal kicking with three.

The juniors Bushrangers also tasted defeat, the under 14s dashed by 39 points and the under 17s beaten 13.13 (91) to 5.5 (35).

On the netball court, it was one defeat after the other for the Bushrangers, with the 13 and under squad the only ones to walk away with a win.

In the A grade, a slow first quarter spelled Beechworth’s defeat, trailing all game to go down 59-37.

The Bushrangers went into the first break behind by 13 goals, a margin which blew out to 20 by three quarter time.

Beechworth will hope for some redemption when they take on Chiltern, with a win opening the door for a shot at a top four position on the ladder.

Croquet club wins 2022 NEDCA Pennant

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH Croquet Club came up trumps winning the 2022 Golf Croquet Pennant in the North Eastern District Croquet Association competition at Wodonga Croquet Club last week.

Seven out of 13 regional clubs participated in annual competition that kicked off in April running over eight weeks with alternating both home and away games where the final game took place on June 15.

Beechworth were winners at the end of round eight with Benalla coming in second after a

very close finish.

Club secretary Paula Dorrington said the day of the finals gave spectators from many of the regional clubs a nail-biting finish.

“Benalla were very strong contenders and the very close finish to these handicap games was evidence of the closeness of this challenge,” she said.

Beechworth’s Terry Walsh, Maria Harvey, David Box and Paula Dorrington in the final’s team played against Benalla players Bruce Blay, Steven Greenway, Christine Blay and Lyn Moulday.

Beechworth players Allan Holt, Sue Rue, Gail Walsh, Chris Ireland, Herman Knopers and Wendy Kelly also contributed to the club’s pennant success.

Val Heel and selected team members served as scorers throughout the competition too.

Beechworth will now hold the shield for 12 months that adds to shield wins on two earlier occasions.

Competition format had been four doubles and eight singles matches while the final four singles matches indicated that Benalla would easily win the day.

Beechworth won all four of

the final singles matches ensuring an overall win with the end scores for Beechworth at seven games with 60 hoops to defeat Benalla five games with 59 hoops.

Delighted with the win, Beechworth club president and coach Allan Holt said Beechworth came into the finals as the underdogs after a challenging season with no home game advantage.

“All our games were played away as Beechworth had one lawn resurfaced this winter leaving only one playable lawn - so the club was unable to host matches,” he said.
