Captain Dick Nankervis,

who served in both World War I and World War II will be honoured in this year’s main address.

Among war service medals, Captain Nankervis had been awarded the ‘Military Medal’ for bravery for his actions at the battle of Polygon Wood near Ypres in Belgium, in September 1917, when Sergeant (later

Lieutenant Nankervis) of the 5th Australian Machine Gun Company.

Born in Corryong to his parents Charles and E.J. Nankervis, the family moved to “Wattle Grove” Wooragee before the end the war.

With his parent’s permission, he had enlisted at the age of 20, leaving Australia on November 10,

1915 and missed being sent to the Dardanelles.

The Captain had also served in World War II when a lieutenant.

Beechworth Sub Branch RSL president John Eldrid said the local branch also organises the event encouraging community participation.

Mr Elrid said with declining RSLs, interest needs to be retained in small towns where the community can w be involved.

“We share ownership of the commemoration with the community and invite community groups to join in,” he said.

“ANZAC Day is part of Australia’s history and is kept alive by having these commemorations with community involvement which has been happening w over the last few years.”

Mr Eldrid said the dawn service will be held at 6am in the Town Hall Gardens followed by a gunfire breakfast in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall where everyone is invited.

The main service is set to start at 11.30am.

“For people joining the

march they need to be assembled at 10.45am at the corner of Church and Ford Streets for the march to the Town Hall Gardens,” Mr Eldrid said.

With wreath laying an important aspect of the commemoration, community groups will also be invited to lay wreaths.

Refreshments will also be served after the service in the Memorial Hall with traditional RSL activities.

RSL delegates will be delivering services at the Beechworth Health Service residents and staff as well as Beechworth Correctional Centre prisoners and staff.

Merchant carries on family tradition

By RYAN MALCOLM ALMOST 180 years after their maternal ancestors first began trading to the goldfields throughout Indigo Shire, Elizabeth Mason and daughter Alexandra Perry have continued to fly the family’s retail flag throughout the region.

Descendants of the Masterton family, which sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne in the mid 1800s before patriarch William established provisions stores in both Beechworth and Rutherglen, both Ms Mason and Ms Perry have followed in their familial footsteps, becoming boutique retail mainstays in the respective towns.

With Ms Perry’s Rutherglen boutique ‘Merchant’ recently celebrating its one year anniversary, Ms Mason said the store had quickly become part of the furniture along Rutherglen’s Main Street, previously known as Argyle Street as her forebears traded in the late 1850s.

“I think it’s been extremely well-received, and I think a lot of Rutherglen locals know of my business (Beechworth’s The Finer Things of Life) and so for them it was

a lovely addition to think they’ve got their own lovely boutique store in their town and they can be part of that,” she said.

“Alexandra has been really delighted by the response - she’s wanting to become involved in the community organisations such as the traders’ association and I think she’s already been to a few meetings.

“I think there is that legacy where she’d really like to embrace the whole commercial opportunity.”

Having been in business in Beechworth herself for 33 years, Ms Mason said she was enjoying advising her daughter as she embarked on her first business venture, having married into Rutherglen’s business-orientated Perry family. “(Alexandra’s) married into that family of very dynamic business operators, the Perrys, and this is just another little diversion from what they’re doing in food and hospitality into boutique retail, so it’s a different thing,” she said.

“I think Rutherglen itself is really developing a lovely retail precinct which I think can only get better.

“That’s always been my feeling that Rutherglen was

a bit let down in the past as obviously it has a fantastic gourmet wine region, and it needed lovely boutique shopping and dining in the heart of town, so I think that’s something they want to develop.

“It’s lovely to have her there and I’m enjoying the relationship where I can sort of be on hand for any advice - it’s very exciting.”

Riders welcome Indigo Epic Trail

AN enthusiastic contingent of excited mountain bike riders gathered at the Indigo Epic Trail Head in Wallace Street Beechworth last week, to celebrate the official opening of the Indigo Epic (Mountain Bike) Trail.

After the unveiling of the Trail Head, riders set off on the first official ride from Beechworth to Yackandandah, where, at the Yackandandah Trail Head in the Sports Park, riders were treated to a celebratory lunch.

Michael Hoare and his partner, president of the Beechworth Chain Gang Mountain Bike Club, Lynn Frerichs, were definitely on a high after their ride.

“It was fun, with a capital F.”, Michael said.

“Lynn and I had been travelling around Australia for a couple of years, but when we heard the news about the plan to create the Indigo Epic Trail, we immediately decided to move to Beechworth.”

Lynn added, “The Indigo Epic Trail is unique in Australia, in that there is a beautiful historic town at each end”.

She said the trail was an allseasons track, and had sections that catered to all levels of riding skills, from the inexperienced through to the seasoned mountain bike rider.

“My dad, Mark Ladbrook, a member of the Beechworth Chain Gang, got me into mountain biking when I was eight,” she said.

As part of the Cannonball Mountain Bike festival at Thredbo last month, Lia

came second in the Elite Women Australian Cycling National Championships, where she competed against many European riders, who regularly take part in World Cup events around the globe.

And indeed, Lia herself is heading off at the end of May to take part in the Downhill World Cup Series, with events taking place in Scotland, Switzerland, Aus-

Sally Huguenin and Rowena Gould, both members of the Granite Girls, part of the Beechworth Chain Gang, were also excited about the official opening ride.

The purpose of the Granite Girls group is to ensure that all members learn professional mountain biking skills in order to enjoy the sport safely.

“We had around 100 wom-

en taking part in our first educational programme round back in 2021, and we still have a good core group of Granite Girls,” they said.

“We go on rides on Tuesday evenings, and of course, on the weekends - last weekend we went to Mount Beauty.

“We are hoping to get more teenage girls interested in our sport, and we are applying for funding to run an-

other programme for women later this year.

“The Granite Guys, for beginners and intermediate level riders, has just finished the first round of its educational programme.”

A PLAY written by a local noted playwright and author recently performed

by Beechworth Theatre Company (BTC) in Stanley is back by popular demand, with the production to be staged in Beechworth.

‘What She Said’, created by award winning author Margaret Hickey will be performed at Mayday Hills Art Society’s (MDHAS) ‘Upstairs Playhouse’ on Saturday March 25 at 7.30pm and Sunday March 26 at 2.00pm.

BTC director Janet Tweedie said audiences at the Stanley performance loved the play, where some people requested a re-run as well

for those unable to attend.

“A few people suggested we should run it again but this time in Beechworth,” Janet said.

“Having a local wellknown and published author is special too.”

Janet said the script connected with everyone as people could identify with characters as well as different situations.

“Marg has a knack with the use of the language capturing the best vernacular for all ages ranges from 16 to 60,” Ms Tweedie said.

The play about relationships and conversations in the everyday is presented as a series of four ‘duologues’ where four actors play eight

characters in four different circumstances.

“There’s a twist in every storyline for the situations that is unexpected,” Janet said.

“It’s funny, heart-warming and is a little emotional too.”

Packed programme set for festival

By ANDREA MACKINLAY HAVING overseen the town’s Easter weekend festival for 60 years, the Beechworth Golden Horseshoes Festival committee has fallen into a familiar sync as it prepares for the event in a fortnight’s time.

Set to run from April 7 through to April 9, this year’s festival offers a jampacked programme of activities and events, and or-

ganisers are hoping to see a return of the big crowds as in the past.

Jennie Gilliver, volunteer coordinator for the festival, said the committee was still looking for volunteers, particularly to help marshall the Grand Parade from 3 - 4pm on Easter Saturday.

“It’s such fun; you get a front row view of the fantastic array of the floats, bands, and all the enter-

tainment, and, you get to wear a hi-viz vest,” she said.

Jennie added that the organisers also need volunteer first aid providers, with a current certification.

This year sees the return of some popular features of past festivals, including the light horse re-enactment, the Hung Sing Lion Dancers, and of course, the shoeing of the golden horseshoes, where the sto-

ry of Daniel Cameron and his horse shod with shoes of real gold, is the centrepiece of the festival.

Among the many music acts are locals, The Kissin’ Cousins, Ollie Kavanagh and Maya Humphreys, the Albury/Wodonga, the Wagga Wagga and District Highland Pipe Bands, and the Wodonga Brass Band will perform.

Jennie and the committee are particularly excited

to welcome for the first time to the festival, Mitch Tambo.

Mitch is an indigenous singer, songwriter, dancer, and didgeridoo (yidak) player and an Australian World Music star.

Mitch appeared on Australia’s Got Talent, represented Australia at Eurovision, and his performance of The Voice in language with John Farnham and Brian May at the Fire Fight

Australia benefit concert was unforgettable.

Mitch is performing on Easter Saturday from 12.30 - 1.35.

HOARDES of orange support turned out to Beechworth’s Town Hall Gardens last weekend, in a celebration of two generaw tions of Independent Indi MPs. As part of a major Voices for Indi event on Sunday, former Indi representative Cathy McGowan and incumbent Helen Haines were recognised for their contributions to the public interest, with both acknowledged as recipients of the Alan Missen Parliamentary Integrity Award by the Accountability Round Table.

The celebration also acknowledged Dr Haines’ recent success, named as McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year for her commitment to integrity in politics.

In his welcome speech, Convenor of the Voices of Indi, Rob Carolane said, “We are gathered here today as a group of citizens who have experienced the transformation of w representation in Indi over the last ten years.”

“This is something that we do not take for granted - we worked hard in many different ways to ensure the election of Cathy McGowan in 2013 and 2016, and then of Helen Haines in 2019 and 2022.

“This journey began about 12 months prior to the 2013 election when a small group of citizens began to wonder together, can we be better represented?

“Having now been represented by a community-based Independent member for Indi for 10 years, we can say, yes, we can be better represented than we were, and we like it.

“How remarkable is it that we choose to come together, not motivated by protest or fear, but pride in our political representation.”

In his address to the 200-strong audience, former Lalor and Melbourne MP Dr Barry Jones explained that the Accountability Round Table was set up back in 2006 by a non-partisan group of citizens with diverse

He said the ART in recent years had been concerned that honesty and integrity in politics had been eroded.

Although still a member of the Labor Party, Dr Jones said that he observed that the two major parties seem to have become far too influenced by lobby groups, and that individual members have to tow the party line, whether it was in their constituents’ interests or not.

In their addresses, both Cathy and Helen

said they became quite emotional when they arrived at the Town Hall Gardens to see so much orange and so many supporters, both long standing and new.

A surprise member of the audience was former Independent MP, Tony Windsor, and his wife, Lynn, who were holidaying in the area, and decided to come along.

Mr Windsor was acknowledged by both Ms McGowan and Dr Haines as somewhat of a trailblazer for the Independent movement, with Dr Haines remarking that he would find the crossbench a whole lot bigger these days, and thanked him for his example.

Police investigate Guitar virtuoso to Rutherglen honour Celtic heritage armed robbery

THE technically impressive tones of fingerstyle guitar are set to ring out from Beechworth’s Hotel Nicholas in the coming weeks, with famed Scottish musician Tony McManus to perform in the North East for the first time.

Hailed as one of the “50 transcendental guitarists of all time” by Guitar Player Magazine, the Celtic maestro will take to the stage in Beechworth on April 1, showcasing his talents as part of a lineup which will also include Beechworth-based teen musician Maya Humphreys.

Renowned for his expertise in performing complex fingerstyle voicings of traditional bagpipe or fiddle music either solo or with friends, Mr McManus, who now resides in Canada, has further strengthened his credentials by showcasing a wide variety of genres, including bluegrass and classical.

Hotel Nicholas owner Lorraine Lucas said she hoped the upcoming performance would whet the region’s appetite for the return of the town’s revamped Celtic Festival later this year. “(Mr McManus) hasn’t played in the region before - he came out a few years ago and played at Woodford Folk Festival (In Queensland),” she said.

“He’s being brought here by William Hutton, who’s the lead singer and performer with an (Australian-based) Celtic band called Claymore.

“Maya has her own repertoire, and she’s also performing at the Golden Horseshoes Festival,” Ms Lucas said.

Emilie reflects on German adventure

By CORAL COOKSLEY A LOCAL Rotary Exchange student captured the interest of Beechworth Rotarians when delivering a fascinating account of living in Germany in a presentation held at club premises in Queen Victoria Park recently.

Stanley’s Emilie Vincent left Australian shores in early August, headed to Germany’s town of Halver located in the state of NorthRhine Westphalia for six months.

The 16-year-old returned to her Stanley home in early February this year and resumed her secondary school studies entering Year 11 at Galen Catholic College.

“It was exciting to travel with around 15 other exchange students where we split up in Dubai to go to our different countries,” Emilie said.

A daunting but exciting journey in the beginning turned into an experience of a lifetime, where the exchange student immersed herself into the culture and attended a secondary school there.

Emilie said the valuable experience helped build her confidence, become more independent and gain an understanding of another culture from living in another country.

Emilie’s German host family met her at the airport with many of their relatives.

“I was taken to soccer games, did rock climbing and attended fitness classes with my friends and had of-

fers to play on soccer teams too,” the teenager said.

“Sport was important as I play a lot of sport here.”

Emilie said she had made many connections through Rotary

which will last a lifetime.

Beechworth Rotary Club president Larry Goldsworthy said the chance to be an exchange student overseas is a real opportunity for personal growth.

“There is a level of independence gained as there is no family support while in a new environment, and people just grow and mature,” he said.

“The exchange opens up doors as well.

“It was a challenge for Emilie with language barriers but the exchange programs with visits to other countries means reducing borders with a greater understanding of each other.”

Emilie’s mum Jo Vincent said her daughter had always been independent but had returned with a more mature mindset and greater confidence.

“It’s a fantastic experience where she now has the travel bug and that’s great”.

The Vincent family are also hosting a German Rotary Exchange student Henning Görtzen.

“It’s been wonderful having Henning here for us to hear him talk about his home country and to talk about our different cultures,” Emilie said.

“We have some great conversations about the difference between school and sport too.”

Fundraiser eyes $20,000 milestone

By RYAN MALCOLM FOLLOWING a resoundingly successful inaugural effort, a Good Friday event at Eldorado’s McEvoy Tavern will look to raise upwards of $20,000 for the statewide cancer appeal.

Having organised the 2022 event on a whim as part of an effort to fundraise for w her granddaughter following a cancer diagnosis at the age of two, Stanley resident Molly Chambeyron said this year’s initiative promised to build on last year’s outpouring of community support.

Set to kick off at 12pm with a major Easter egg hunt courtesy of Beechworth’s Bendigo Bank, the day will also feature an auction, face painting, live music and the hotly anticipated yabby racing.

“I think everyone enjoyed (last year), they’re all coming again - we raised $10,375, so we’re hoping to double that,” Ms Chambeyron said.

“My granddaughter Willow has had cancer for two years - she was diagnosed at two and basically the last two years she’s been in and out of the Royal Children’s Hospital having treatment, and in the last few weeks we got good scans back which is fantastic.

“I like to visit the pub (McEvoy tavern) on a Sunday afternoon when I get the chance, and Kelly (pub owner Kelly Bradley) and I have been friends for life so I just asked her on a whim and we jumped in.”

Ms Chambeyron said she could not put a number on how many generous locals attended last year’s inaugural event, but said she had prepared for an increase in numbers this time around.

She said she had printed as many as 200 auction cards for attendees to bid with during the day’s auctions.

“I have no idea (how many people attended), it was such a blur - I had volunteers who didn’t show up and I was just thrown in, and next minute the auctions were on and we had a result and the day was over,” she laughed.

“We just encourage people to rock up - I think we’ve got enough donations (of items).

“I’ve got a lounge room full of donated items which I need to turn into auction items and hamper them all together.”

The free event will commence from midday on Friday, April 7.

Art a constant passion for Kerrie

KERRIE Ware was born in Sydney and later grew up in country towns around NSW. She moved to Rutherglen in 1990, living there until 1993 before returning in 2003 after spending a decade overseas.

What do you do workwise?

I was a teacher, and I’m also a mixed media artist.

What brought you to your role/career?

I always wanted to teach. I moved from country NSW after finishing high school to attend university in Sydney and then worked in the city. I then taught in a number of country and coastal schools in NSW before accepting a post overseas in Singapore for nine years.

Upon returning to live in Rutherglen, I taught in a number of schools as an English / History teacher and head of fepartment before moving to Rutherglen High School as a leading teacher. I retired this year.

What did you love about teaching?

What I loved about teaching was seeing students and staff achieve success. I enjoyed facilitating opportunities and supporting programs that allowed people to make a difference to their school and their community. As a teacher, seeing their respective skills, achievements and contributions acknowledged and celebrated was always special.

What do you do in the community?

I have always been involved in the arts in various volunteering roles. Over many years and in many schools, I have worked with various government and educational organisations to develop opportunities for students in a range of areas such as leadership, writing, speaking and drama, as well as community participation and development of community facilities. The arts is a wide-reaching area that I contribute to and support via exhibitions and helping to organise various aspects of events. For example, the early iterations of the sculpture trail saw my husband, George van de Ven, commissioned by the

Kerrie Ware, Rutherglen local powerhouse - Arts Rutherglen - to design, construct and supply a sculpture for the town’s sculpture trail, as we had been heavily involved in helping to set it up.

Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

We have a dedicated group of citizens that has worked very hard to formulate the Rutherglen Placemaking Plan and they have excellent ideas for Rutherglen going forward. The failure of various parties to reach an agreement regarding the heavy Main Street traffic however, remains an issue.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

Land-hungry nations with megalomaniac leaders, climate change and displaced people (the focus of one of my last art works) If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

It is far too hard to choose one person. If pressed, I would choose a number of different artists from different eras working across different mediums. I would ask them to create their respective interpretation of an aspect of the town’s ‘soul’. Ours is a wonderfully supportive community and that is what I would like to see explored and highlighted. Their art could later be housed around Rutherglen and then featured in the proposed light shows on the silos.

Locals showcase spirit of cricket BEECHWORTH’S A grade cricketers have been recognised as best exemplifying the Wangaratta district’s spirit of cricket.

The award, which was formally presented at Monday’s Senior Presentation evening, was decided following a weekly umpire vote, when officiating umpires ranked participating teams on a scale of one to five.

According to WDCA president Justin Kelly, Beechworth’s A graders had been adjudged as ‘excellent’ in nine of the 12 games they competed in during the season.
