“It’s really more about those conversations that happen as we walk along,” Sally said.

Lisa said returning walkers year after year made the B2B team realise how important the walk is.

“What we’re doing is worthwhile and makes a difference,” she said.

24-hour ambo station suggestion SEVEN extra paramedics and a 24-hour ambulance station at Beechworth is one of the solutions that could fix the ongoing failures of ambos to get to patients in life threatening emergencies in Indigo Shire, according to Liberal MP for Benambra Bill Tilley.

On Tuesday night in the Victorian Parliament, Mr Tilley asked the Minister for Ambulance Services, Gabrielle Williams, to take action to fix what has become a quarterly “joke”.

The Indigo Shire has sat in the top-10 of the worst performing shires in the state since records were made public in 2014.

Ambulance Victoria’s quarterly data at the end of last year showed that less than one in five patients in a Code 1 emergency were reached within the benchmark 15 minutes.

The average wait time for an ambulance was 25 minutes and 20 seconds, more than three minutes worse than the corresponding period at the end of 2021.

Mr Tilley said he wanted to offer solutions.

“Between 2015 and 2022, the average number of quarterly Code 1 callouts in the shire went from 161 to 202.6 - up 26 per cent,” he told the Victorian Parliament.

Mr Tilley also pointed to the lack of beds at Albury Wodonga Health as another factor.

“They (the ambulances) sit outside emergency with their patient until a bed is available - it can take hours,” he said.

“So, when all the Wodonga ambulances are sitting at Albury Base or Wodonga Hospital, the next call out is to the paramedics at Beechworth ... taking that service out of Indigo Shire, the next after that Tallangatta leaving Towong short.”

Working to the BEAT MEMBERSHIP numbers have ramped up for a local exercise group for the over 55s for both men and women following recovery from COVID impacts, with more than 30 participants attending sessions this year held twice a week at the Senior Citizens Centre.

Beechworth Exercise Activity and Training Group Inc. (BEAT) continues to expand its fitness and socialisation focus.

BEAT’s Judy Smith said the organisation - not part of the senior citizens group - is a not-for-profit one providing many benefits for community members.

The qualified fitness instructor said exercise helped with muscle tone, preventing deterioration as a result of age, helped brain function through movement, assisted in preventing illness and helped keep blood pressure stable.

“These are all proven aspects of keeping fit,” she said.

Judy said social benefits of belonging to the group had a positive impact for people too.

“People may not get out much through the week, they come along and exercise and stay back and have a cuppa where they make friends that can lead to other outings.

“It’s a great avenue for new members in the community to meet new people and make friends too.”

BEATS member Jane Carroll said she felt great after enjoyable group exercise sessions.

“It’s important for people to exercise as they get older and it keeps me going,” she said.

BEATS gives back to the community too with a recent $500 donation to the Rochester flood appeal as well as donations last year made to the Salvation Army and the local high school to assist some students with the cost of extracurricular activities among others.

The community organisation has also donated funds to help with heating and cooling, new chairs, and a kitchen upgrade at the Senior Citizens Centre.

“We have a social day coming up next month as well and we try and have a couple of social activities throughout the year as well as giving back to the community financially,” Judy said.

BEAT’s Helen Kenny, also a qualified

instructor, said an assistant training package run by BEATS trained people to help manage the group’s program by fully qualified instructors.

“We’re always looking for new trainers to help out,” she said.

Activities include gentle exercise and resistance training using free weights on Mondays, tai chi qigong or gentle exercises on Wednesdays with table tennis only offered on Thursdays.

Annual membership costs $5 with $3 per session.

Red Cross Calling appeal forWalking a cause to take place next month ■ From page 1

By CORAL COOKSLEY COMMUNITY members can help make a difference to humanitarian causes by donating to next month’s Australian Red Cross Calling Appeal.

Cans have rattled for the fundraising campaign every March for the last 75 years around the nation to support the Red Cross’s vital work.

Local Beechworth branch members will be at the town’s kiosk near the roundabout on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12pm.

Branch chairperson Julia Smith said members will welcome people dropping by to make a donation.

Donations will go towards many Red Cross programs such as patient transport, disaster and recovery locally, nationally and internationally, the telecross service of daily telephone calls to check on people’s wellbeing, as well as breakfast programs.

“Red Cross Emergency RediPlan booklets will also be available at the kiosk,” Ms Smith said.

“These booklets help people plan for emergencies - not just natural disasters like bushfires of floods - but also give advice on incidents such as what to do if they fall in their homes requiring a hospital stay.

Ms Smith said the branch raised close to $1600 for the Red Cross Calling appeal plus donations of $200 towards the Ukraine and floods appeals last year.

“This was more than the year before which was the first time we had been in the kiosk due to COVID-19 impacts preventing us collecting door-to-door, where we then averaged $7,000 to $8,000,” she said.

“Collection tins will be at the kiosk for cash but we will also be able to accept EFTPOS and credit card donations too.

“People can also deposit donations directly into our bank account.”

Busy over the last few months with catering services, Ms Smith said profits to Red Cross appeals from this endeavour included $800 to the overseas fundraising for the rebuilding Ukraine program, where funds have also been previously sent to the Ukraine crisis appeal,

while $2000 had been sent to the Global Hunger Crisis appeal as well.

Among others had been a $2000 contribution to the Floods Disaster and Recovery program.

“Last month we received a very generous donation of $2000 and the branch added another $1000 to contribute $3000 to the Turkiye - Syria earthquakes appeal,” Ms Smith said.

With increasing registrations for this year’s 73 kilometre walk along the scenic Murray to Mountains Rail Trail from Friday, March 24 to Sunday, March 26, the B2B crew has also noticed many new names signing up.

Lisa said the walk attracted people from around the North East region and beyond as well as from as far as Melbourne and Sydney.

Wangaratta Coachlines will offer a return bus service for walkers from Bright, while Dyson buses will operate a hopon, hop-off service allowing participants to continue talking while taking a break from walking.

The majority of the funds will be donated this year to Headspace in Albury Wodonga.

“At the end of this walk the team will look at where funds will be directed for next year’s walk,” Lisa said.

Lisa said B2B was fortunate to be supported by local service clubs and community organisations.

“Everyone is welcome to join in, whether you have a personal connection to suicide or walking for mental health, or whether you just want to come along and enjoy the walk,” Lisa said.

“The walk for the first day begins with registrations at 8am on March 24 in Albert Road, Beechworth near the Chinese Gardens for an 8.30am step off.

First Christ Church concert in series kicks off in Beechworth

By CORAL COOKSLEY MUSIC lovers have the chance again this year to hear classical music from Australian and internationally renowned artists when Christ Church’s concert series kicks off next month.

With a growing reputation for professional performances in an incredible church acoustic setting, the series draws both concert goers from around the region including southern NSW as well as requests by performers from far and wide seeking to participate.

A fabulous line up has been planned for this year’s series with Niels Bijl and Peter Hagen returning to perform French baroque music for harpsichord and saxophone for the first concert Duo De Fesch - ‘Unbelievably Baroque.’

Concert convenor Dr Kate Sutherland said, the musicians performed in last year’s series and will be returning home via Beechworth from a successful regional tour.

“Peter and Neils wanted to be part of the series again and come back to the town,” she said.

Music school ready to rock

By CORAL COOKSLEY EXCITEMENT abounds for BMF Rock School band members with their opening gig at next Saturday’s Spring Ditch for a day of music and family fun in Stanley.

The youngsters, aged between seven and 15 years old, participated in last year’s BMF term four after school program, and will next week translate their skills to the stage.

“The group has some great skills in vocals and keyboard,” BMF Rock School co-founder Rikki Raadsveld said.

Rikki and Lex Fletcher started the rock school, which runs at the Old Beechworth Gaol, to encourage local young musicians to get together and form a band, with opportunities to play in front of a live audience.

“Highly experienced music industry specialists living in Beechworth and Stanley offering amazing mentoring and performance skills support these young people to develop their musical talents,” she said.

The not-for-profit school began with a three-day program six years ago, and now runs as an after school term program, with the earlier program added for the first time in January this year since being impacted by COVID restrictions.

Rikki said the program offered an opportunity for kids to develop musical skills and confidence where goals could be set around music performance.

“It also gives the young musicians the potential to mix with professional musicians and it’s a great way to develop the skills and confidence needed for a future in the music industry.”

Rikki said a number of opportunities had been created for the young musicians to play

at different venues and events, including the Empire Hotel, the Spoke Festival at Gravelista, Rutherglen’s Creative Land Festival, The Celtic Festival and even Metal in the Mountains.

“Many have also participated in the Jamswells sessions held at Tanswell’s Hotel,” she said.

“Using local videographers Jerun Terlaak and Richard Iskov from Open Door Studio, we were able to offer (pre Covid)

six of our former participants a chance to have a morning practice session and then record the INXS song ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ with help from a $5000 Regional Arts of Victoria grant.”

“Aside from this funding Indigo Shire has been our greatest support with funding for developing the term program and getting our studio fully equipped through the community grants program.”

THE airways are expected to be filled with a chorus of engine next month as historic planes prepare to take to the sky for the Wangaratta Historic Motor Show and Fly in on April 23.

The Wangaratta Airport is expected to be filled with a range of warbirds and antique civilian planes from Kittyhawks, Mustangs, Harvards ranging from the early 20th century.

Precision Airmotive principal and pilot of more than 40 years, Doug Hamilton said while it’s early to tell exactly how many planes will be appearing for the show, he expects a large and diverse line up of planes to be appearing.

“It gets bigger every year, more people are starting to hear about it,” he said.

“We have other smaller events, not meant for the public but this one is a huge event.”

Mr Hamilton, with help from the Wangaratta Aero Club and other businesses that operate on the airfield, will be overseeing the aircraft fly in and any activity on the runway.

Mr Hamilton said the fourth edition of the bi-annual fly in is the biggest local event on the calendar for plane enthusiasts.

“People who like their airplanes, love machinery so they come out and see all the other airplanes that have turned up and wander around and enjoy the tractors, the trucks and the stationary engines, the cars,” he said.

Mr Hamilton will be doing a few flights during the day with Precision Airmotive’s Kttyhawk, Mustang, Harvard and a 1950s twin engine Beech 18.

Artistic talent on show at Albury MAMA exhibition

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH Secondary College student Lily Cranston has been selected as one of 10 young people in the Murray region to have artwork on show this year in the Murray Art Museum Albury’s (MAMA) ‘RAW’ exhibition.

Lily’s digital artwork called ‘Foolish’ is showcased in the Brindley Family Gallery at the exhibition premises at 546 Dean Street in Albury.

The annual free exhibition running until March 19 shines a light on creative strengths of original work and artistic passions of 16 to 21-year-olds with their best works. w The year 12 student said having artwork in the exhibition is a great opportunity to “get out there” and show the community that young people create good artwork.

“There’s a young generation coming through with all these really w awesome cool ideas,” the young artist said. y With a love of being crea-

tive since a youngster including drawing where she never stopped, Lily said her dream is to be a freelance artist after she leaves school.

Lily said the artistic piece was not something she created for a school work but her teachers strongly support her in becoming a future artist.

College principal Trish Broom said Lily had always had a strong focus on her graphic designs and using digital technology to create original works.

“She developed an image for the cover of our school magazine this year,” she said.

Lilly also had the chance to take part in three professional workshops before a presentation of her final work for the exhibition.

Tutorials by MAMA curatorial staff covered concept development, artwork preparation, and exhibition installation as well as feedback for future projects.

THREE Beechworth Secondary College (BSC) students are set to enhance their learning this year through a new learning centre for the state’s high-achieving VCE students.

Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins in October last year launched the $27.5 million new Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) located in South Yarra.

The Centre, with university partners, has been created for government high school VCE students, with online tuition set to start next week as well as some face-to-face sessions held in Melbourne too.

Rokia has undertaken a first-year university subject in biology with Federation University while Chloe has taken up a subject in law with La Trobe University.

“We thought this sounded like a good opportunity to undertake the university extended program instead of taking up a fifth subject here at school,” Rokia and Chloe both said.

Rokia said she planned to go to university to study biology as she had really enjoyed studying the subject , but was unsure of her career plans as yet, while Chloe added she is also unsure of which career path she intends to follow.

“I have two options I’m thinking about with either nursing or law and it’s a balance at the moment, but I do want to go to university and study,” Chloe said.

I really enjoy learning about law as well as the medical side of things and helping people that way too,” she said.

The pair said with a supportive school community they didn’t fell alone as teachers are happy to help.

Year 11 student Dan Russell is studying Algorithmics through the new centre.

Delighted BSC principal Trish Broom said the Department of Education and Training (DET) funded program is mainly for year 12 students, but Dan’s excellence in studying VCE maths had seen him accepted into the program as well.

Ms Broom said the trio will gain the experience of studying a university level subject.

“They also have the chance to meet with likeminded students onsite in Melbourne, and truly extend themselves in their area of interest,” she said.

The centre provides VCE students with courses that are aligned to their skills and interests, contributing to their ATAR. Students remain enrolled at their government secondary school while participating in courses at CHES as part of their VCE program with course delivery designed to support students in regional, rural and remote areas for their year-long program.

Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins said the new centre is an exciting milestone for high-achieving VCE students where students have the best spaces to learn, can meet their potential and access a great education.

Year 12 student Lily Cranston has also achieved great heights with her artistic endeavours.

Haines housing amendment better for regional Australia INDEPENDENT MP for Indi Helen Haines successfully amended the government’s housing package bills to include better representation of regional, rural and remote Australia.

The government housing package, which aims to build 30,000 social and affordable houses in its first five years, passed the House of Representatives last week.

“Housing is a critical issue in Indi. It is at crisis level. Everywhere I go, whether it’s a small town or a large regional centre, people talk to me about how hard it is to find a place to live that is affordable and appropriate,” Dr Haines said.

“Addressing the housing crisis is the first step to addressing other issues we face, like finding health workers or growing our businesses.

“I am working with the government to make sure regional Australia isn’t left out of these reforms.

“The former government’s version of the housing fund only spent 25 per cent of the $1 billion they promised and none of that came to Indi.

“There was no specific funding directed to regional and rural Australia.

“We can’t have another missed opportunity with this fund.”

STOKED: Beechworth’s Tiarnan Halliday excited to see some of Beechworth’s old buildings re-activated and repurposed to continue community engagement with them in new ways.

Respecting heritage TIARNAN Halliday was born at Northeast Health Wangaratta and has lived in Beechworth most of his life. He grew up in the town with his parents and two siblings. When in his early 20s, Tiarnan moved to Melbourne, where he met his wife Georgia. The couple travelled and lived overseas before returning to Beechworth eight years ago.

What do you do workwise?

I’m a building designer and I own Halliday Design which is based in Beechworth. We design residential and commercial buildings as well as civic projects.

What brought you to your role/career?

I’ve always been creative and from a young age loved drawing and building things. I also grew up next door to Brenton Surrey (co-owner of CJ & BJ Surrey Builders) who always wanted to be a builder. We decided as children that I’d draw the buildings and he’d build them, and I guess as they say the rest is history!

What do you love about your work?

I like working with people and helping to turn their ideas into reality. It’s really satisfying to see one of our projects come to life and be loved by the people who live or work in it. I also like the problem-solving aspect - having a brief and trying to exceed it for our clients.

Being in a heritage town, I am also really driven to make sure our local projects respect and compliment the local amenity. I feel a huge sense of honour and responsibility to have our designs contribute positively to Beechworth’s beautiful streetscapes. Creating sustainable buildings that will be enjoyed for generations is also very rewarding.

What do you do in the community?

I’ve been lending my support behind the scenes to End MND North East Vic & Albury.

Tiarnan Halliday, Beechworth It’s a new group made up of local people who have been touched by Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The group is fundraising to support people living with MND and to help find a cure.

It’s a cause close to our hearts as I lost my dad (Beechworth solicitor Brendan Halliday) to MND in 2015.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

Climate change and protecting the natural world. Now that I have a nine-month-old son, this matter feels even more pressing to me.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

I’d love to meet Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs. If he came to Beechworth, I’d like to show him Mayday Hills, the old Benevolent Hospital Precinct and the old Gaol - it’s so exciting to see these beautiful old buildings be re-activated and repurposed, so that the community can continue to engage with them in new ways.

What book are you reading?

‘Stolen Focus’ by Johann Hari. It’s about our collective addiction to smartphones and online media. Hari is a controversial writer, but his book has made me reflect on how I engage with technology in a new light.

Play performed in Stanley delights local audiences

by Beechworth playwright and award-winning author Margaret Hickey drew close to 100 theatregoers over two nights at the Stanley Soldier’s Memorial Hall last weekend.

Beechworth Theatre Company presented the production of ‘What We Said’ about relationships and conversations in the everyday where four actors played eight characters in dualogues in various scenes.

BTC director Janet Tweedie said accessibility of the playwright’s script stood out.

“Marg captures characters that people can recognise instantly, where she combines humour, pathos, lightness and a bit of drama all in one package,” she said.

“The play was a delight to perform, and I think the audience enjoyed the intimate atmosphere.”

“I think they may have been pleasantly surprised at the level of professionalism and talent in the cast and production.”

Janet said the theatre company is on the rise with a bright future ahead.

Driver D i reached h d 158kph, k h hit with $2000 fine A LOCAL driver who elected to ‘diagnose’ his car by reaching speeds of more than 150kph along the Great Alpine Road during a public holiday weekend has been slammed with a $2000 fine and banned from driving for a year.

The 39-year-old faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday, pleading guilty to speeding in a manner dangerous after reaching 158kph while travelling north-west in a 100kph zone near Everton on June 12 last year.

According to police prosecutor Senior Constable Victoria Lennon, police had been stationary in the opposite lane as they observed the accused travelling at a fast rate of speed believed to be well in excess of 140kph, confirmed by the use of a speed gun.

She said police had quickly moved to intercept the vehicle, which was said to have presented with two bald rear tyres.

When interviewed, the accused told police he had been “diagnosing” his car.

It was subsequently impounded for 30 days.

Defence counsel

Geoff Clancy said the driving, which took place around 3pm on the Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend, had taken place following the recent passing of a family member and the breakdown of an intimate relationship.

He said his client had “decided to put his foot down,” and had not downplayed his actions to police. “(He) was just seeing what his car could do,” he said.

Magistrate Peter Dunn said he didn’t understand the accused’s desire to speed in a vehicle he understood to be old and quite rare.

“I just don’t get it really - you’ve got a nice car, probably a reasonably rare car which is increasing in value every day,” he said.

“There’s a perfectly good race track 40 kilometres south of here.

“There’s certainly not going to be any wildlife or interesections.”

He did not convict the accused, electing to cancel the man’s licence for 12 months and fine him more than $2100.

Police appeal continues on sixth anniversary of Everton shooting ARMED Crime Squad detectives are again calling for public assistance to solve one of the North East’s biggest mysteries, six years after an elderly cyclist was shot and left for dead along the Myrtleford-Everton Rail Trail.

Kelvin Tennant, then 72, was found lying unconscious on the cycling trail with gunshot wounds to his head and chest shortly after midday on February 18, 2017, and was subsequently airlifted to Melbourne with life-threatening injuries.

It’s believed his alleged shooter left the area in a dark-coloured sedan.

Mr Tennant survived the attack, but continues to experience issues with his eyesight and hearing in the ensuing years.

Detailed investigations undertaken by police throughout the area continue, while a $500,000 reward remains on offer at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner of police for anyone with information on the attack.

motive for this.

“He loved the area and loved to ride his bike, and there is no way he would have expected this ride to end like this.

“I know every investigator who worked on this matter over the years would love to see it solved - not only to

provide justice to Kelvin and his family, but also to find out the mystery of why this shooting occurred.”

Housing the young is a “game changer”

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN GOTAFE has secured $13.3 million of State Government funding that will enable the beginning of works for the “game changing” Education First Youth Foyer build near its Wangaratta campus.

In collaboration with NESAY, Uniting Victoria and the Brotherhood of St Laurence, GOTAFE’s new Wangaratta education foyer will combine affordable medium-term accommodation with education and training, empowering young people aged 15 to 24 at risk of homelessness to complete their studies and successfully transition from school into work.

While living at the youth foyer, young people will be supported to undertake education, training and employment to expand their capabilities.

The 40-room youth foyer will be situated right next to the GOTAFE’s Docker Street campus, near the corner of Norton Street, to give residents easy access to the education site and the Wangaratta CBD. Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said at the official announcement at GOTAFE last week, the youth foyer will provide opportunities for young people in the region they would never have had before.

“It’s so exciting, we are addressing a need that exists, there are so many young people living in housing they shouldn’t be, couch surfing, subjected to family violence or a range of issues,” Ms Symes said.

“It’s about responding to the underlying issues of generational vulnerabilities, having a safe house that has the support to enable young people to have an education and create opportunities and pathways for them.

“This is why not only is the foyer model a place to lay your head at night, it has support services in place for people who have probably not had the best start in life, the reason they are probably experiencing homelessness is because their family life is not stable, it could be unsafe.

“For them to have the op-

Residents will be able to stay at the youth foyer for a maximum of two years, acting as a start of building independence skills before aiding students into the next stage of their lives and accepting new youth foyer residents.

GOTAFE chief executive officer Travis Heeney said with the youth foyer build in Wodonga also funded, it will provide the entire region with much sought after education and accommodation pathways for youth in the North East.

“If nothing else it’s about setting people up with just basic life skills..at the minimum that’s what we expect people to do, and we have people doing a diploma of nursing, bachelor degrees... and we’ve got such a shortage in so many career paths,” he said.

“They don’t have to be sleeping in parks because they have nowhere else to go, they’ll be prioritised and triaged in by experts and it’s a game changer for those people.

“Those service providers are making sure post youth foyer that they’re set up well, and that’s what makes you really proud, when they move out and move into their own rental, it’s phenomenal.”

Ms Symes said the youth foyer model is based on foyers built similar to the Shepparton model, which has been in operation for the past five years.

“I know the ones I’ve met, once they (students) get the opportunity, they don’t waste it,” she said.

“They want the opportunity and not having the distraction or the obligation of trying to navigate housing on your own, that takes away focus on your opportunities to choose a pathway, to choose a course, it’s the last thing on their mind.

Mr Heeney said works to begin the build are “imminent” this year.

“We’ve got the site ready to go; and it’s expected construction to start in December this year,” he said.

“We’ve got the youth support from NESAY, we’ve got Uniting as a housing provider to make sure there’s opportunities for students after staying at the foyer and they’re also going to be in town so they can live their lives and enjoy everything the town has to offer.

“And on campus, the reality is they can study with us here and literally just walk back home.”

The State Government announced its overall $50 million investment will be shared between eight registered housing providers to fund 10 new housing projects across the state.

Croome strengthens lead in local Summer Cup

By DYLAN POOL LAST Thursday a dozen players fronted up in hot conditions to play the back nine.

The winner was Andy Croome with 21 (19+2), runner up and the winner of The George Kerferd Hotel voucher was Mark Taylor 19 (18+1).

Ball winners were Graeme Cordy 19 and Ben Ryder 19.

The Beechworth Bakery voucher for nearest the pin on the 10th was won by Dylan Pool while the Alpine Indigo Accounting sponsored nearest the pin on the 17th was won by Ben Ryder.

Tyson Carey took home the cash for the nearest chip on the 14th.

On Sunday the second round of the Summer Cup was played.

Andy Croome (19) won the day with 38 points, Zane Howard (22) was runner up with 36, followed

by Xavier Palamarczuk (2) 35.

Nearest the pin went to Andy Croome on the 10th.

After the first two rounds Andy Croome leads on 73 points, from Xavier Palamarczuk on 67 and Rod Shaw on 65.

The third and final round will be played on Sunday, March 5 in conjunction with the 2023 opening day.

Golf this Sunday will be an event to be decided on the day based on the numbers which turn up.

Bushrangers learn Weston’s way “We’ve actually just had a new member reach out to the club this morning and she wanted her 11 year-old daughter to join the club, which is quite nice,” she said.

“What we’ve done over the last couple of years is we’ve had Net Set Go involved with the club in a more permanent fixture and what we’ve seen this year is our junior members have had really strong numbers.”

“I think the hard work of the volunteers of the Net Set Go is now taking effect, so we’re starting to get more juniors going through the grades which is what we’ve been aiming for.”

As coach of both the A and B grade netball this year, Lang said pre-season has been reasonable in participation numbers and is looking forward to the Bushrangers pre-season camp to Mount Buffalo this weekend, where the football and netball club will be taking part.

“We’ve been trying to make an emphasis over the last two seasons about the community, having our family members there and kids with us really creates a family friendly environment,” she said.

“And it’s not just about those playing football or netball, but it’s about the community who come to support us and watch us as well.”

Bushies’ learn Weston’s way

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN BEECHWORTH’S netballers are still in awe after Australian Diamond and Melbourne Vixen star Jo Weston hit the court with the Bushrangers last Sunday morning.

Weston, who has played 57 matches for Australia, hosted a clinic for junior and senior players at Baarmutha Park which involved multiple drills and skills and valuable teachings.

A grade Beechworth netball coach Bailey Lang said

the defender from Corowa was inspiring to watch in action for the 80 netballers who attended.

“Jo is an amazing netballer and role model,” she said.

“For the kids, it’s something they’ll remember for a long time, I would say she

would have been quite influential in terms of prolonging their career in netball and might even push some of them to go as far as they can.

“We’re all massive fans of the Vixens being a Victorian team so we were mostly ‘fan girling’.”

Netballers from Yackandandah, Wodonga, Chiltern and Wangaratta also made their way down to the clinic, which also involved a morning breakfast and a women’s empowerment talk led by not-for-profit support organisation Sport and Life

Training (SALT).

Lang said a strong representation at the clinic further highlighted the successful development of participation in young netballers at the club, which is still having an effect.
