$10,000 art success

A LOCAL creative artist scooped the inaugural Beechworth Contemporary Art Award’s $10,000 major prize, which was announced at last Friday night’s event launch held at the Quercus Beechworth Oregon Hall.

Gundowring’s Susie Losch had been among 10 well-

known Australian contemporary artists in the running for the prize, with their work selected from more than 200 entries from around the nation.

“I was pretty shocked and blown away as there were amazing artists and the win wasn’t expected,” Ms Losch said.

Ms Losch said the Beechworth Town Hall, with its or-

gan recently re-installed after being away for more than a century, provided the site and impetus for her work titled ‘Swell’ for further exploration into the notions of inflation and deflation as a basis for sculpture.

“Air provided both the uptake of space through the construction of forms using re-cycled fabrics and the

creation of sound choreographed with the use of electronic timers in this site-specific installation,” she said.

“Beechworth Organ Society musicians Sandra Williams and Mark Stephens had played the organ for me with Liam Cuffley recording and manipulating the sounds.”

Creative art director and Woolshed Valley artist and

educator Nina Machielse Hunt said guest judge Sydney-based independent curator Sebastian Goldspink had deemed Susie’s work world-class.

Mr Goldspink said the winning work had been chosen from a super competitive field with many amazing works.

Roles of writers and artists questioned

By CORAL COOKSLEY TWO well-known Melbourne University creative thinkers will join together at the Town Hall on Sunday to explore the roles of writers and artists in a time of climate emergency, multispecies extinctions, and intensifying social injustices.

Academic Dr Tessa Laird and Dr Hayley Singer will explore the topics in the session ‘Unwriting Disaster: In Conversation,’ a postponed event from the Winterwords celebrations in June this year.

Dr Laird said the focus will bring together a range of texts the pair have been reading, mostly by Australian women and predominantly on ecological themes.

“We can see the ways that these texts are interrelated, and we’re looking forward to sketching out those connections,” she said.

Dr Laird said she hoped the audience will gain a sense of awareness of impending environmental disaster, but not a sense of powerlessness.”

“I hope they will be challenged, but also feel empowered to act, and to find avenues and methods to think and act ecologically, with passion, care and compassion,” she said.

“I also hope they will find a book from those discussed that will spark a longer journey and engagement with the themes that we will be raising.”

Dr Springer said conversations that hold the slow,

deep, thinking of philosophers and artists at their centre are vital.

“I’m looking forward to being in a space with other people to think and talk about some of the writers and philosophers who are saying things that we absolutely need to hear, especially when what they have to say shakes the status quo,” she said.

“I’m also looking forward to thinking and talking about the way writers bring undervalued, underrepresented or submerged ideas into public view.”

Dr Springer said she looked forward to unknowable dynamics of a live event and thinking out loud with others too.

Dr Singer contributed to former Beechworth Writ-

ers, Readers and Poets (WRAP) weekends running writing workshops and worked with Stanley Athenaeum members on some of the stories of the women of Stanley from which the book ‘Hearts of Gold, Minds of Metal’ evolved.

Dr Laird is an artist, writer, and Lecturer in Critical and Theoretical Studies at the Victorian College of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne while Dr Singer teaches in the University of Melbourne’s Creative Writing Program.

Local youngster chats to visiting contemporary artist

By CORAL COOKSLEY LOCAL four-year-old Freyja Bijker enjoyed a chat with one of ten artists at the Beechworth Contemporary Art Award event last weekend.

The youngster held a ball of wool for Castlemaine’s Kate Just in between busy live knitting projects for people to join the artist’s self care action series craft circle sessions held in the Old Stone Hall.

Ms Just said the Contemporary Art Award gave artists an opportunity to engage with local community and create work in a regional town.

“There are only a couple of opportunities like that in Victoria and New South Wales,” she said.

“And it’s unique because it puts our work in places where it isn’t usually as we’re used to showing in commercial galleries, in museum contexts and inner city spaces.

“It has given us different social and community context for the work that I think is an interesting thing for artists and how their work can

resonate in different places in different ways.”

Knitting for 20 years, Ms Just said she had been making knitted artwork since art school, where she studied painting.

“I felt that knitting was an interesting medium in the way it could hold a lot of those more personal narratives and connections between women,” she said.

Ms Just had 20 knitted artworks on show and her work has taken her around the world to India, China and New York.

Freyja’s mother Catherine Bijker said seeing contemporary art in Beechworth had been nice, with artworks merged with historic aspects of the town as well.

“The event has us talking about art, and it’s really good to get the kids seeing art and not just art in a gallery sense, but in their everyday lives,” she said.

“I think anything that brings people to town and talking about art is a good thing.”

Lake debate Awareness campaign ramps up about proposed Lake Sambell Caravan Park development

By CORAL COOKSLEY SEVERAL community members ramped up an awareness campaign this week, as Indigo Shire Council awaits feedback around a proposed Lake Sambell Caravan Park development.

The move followed the emergence of strong community debate after Indigo Shire Council’s adoption of its draft Caravan Park Masterplan for four parks around the shire at last month’s council meeting.

The draft Masterplan is on display inviting public comment.

On Monday and Tuesday Beechworth campaigners Kerry Bromage and Jeanette McPetrie brought concerns to the community’s attention, with signs erected outside Beechworth Post Office.

Among concerns have been a lack of public consultation, a 12 metre boundary extension, and another six acre boundary adjustment.

The pair spoke to around 100 people , with 60 submission forms handed out, 28 of which were promptly filled in by community members.

With the proposed draft plans displayed at the event, Ms Bromage said only a handful of people knew of the pro-

posed development from a post she made to the Beechworth Community Facebook page.

She said two people supported the project, while two were unbiased and not interested in completing a submission.

According to Ms Bromage, many people spoken to had been tourists and regular visitors staying at the caravan park, all of whom wanted to see the area retained.

“It’s a natural environment and bush feel that is the appeal and all thought the existing amenities could be greatly improved and updated but felt the proposal is an over-development,” she said.

“Many tourists put in submissions too and locals have been concerned about loss of trees and wildlife.”

Ms Bromage also brought people’s attention to page 64 of last month’s Council Agenda about the draft masterplan, which sought public comment with the line “....whilst unlikely to change the strategic direction, will add to the inputs and general awareness.”

Longtime Beechworth resident Iris Mannik raised a number of concerns including future traffic and parking created in an already small busy road that

is the only way in and out of the caravan park.

Another is the 12 metre boundary extension into the area between Sandy Beach and the overflow caravan area that would also mean the removal of native trees planted by Beechworth Primary School.

Ms Mannik also questioned the fences to be built around the new manager’s residence, with the Lions Memorial walk behind it which may impact walkers accessing the area.

She also raised possible complaints by the caravan park, with the proposed development to allow people walking across the walkway to the southern side of the lake in the vicinity of guests.

“What happens to Emma’s Garden and the bird and wildlife the southern side that draws bird watchers and photographers?” she said.

“Where is the Environment Study Impact Report, and feasibility study?”

Submissions for public comment close on September 27.

The Draft Masterplan is available to read or to download via the ‘Have Your Say’ section on Council’s website and/or at the library where hard copies are available.

Local church blesses country plaque

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ plaque blessed by the Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Wangaratta at Beechworth’s Anglican Christ Church last week has acknowledged First Nations Peoples.

The Right Reverend Clarence Bester said the plaque symbolised the church parishioners in recognising First Nations People as the traditional custodians of the lands, water and culture of this region.

“As we thank Creator God, for those who cared for the land on which this church stands, and for those who built this church and who have worshipped in it, we dedicate this plaque to God as a

symbol of our heritage and of our common search for life together,” he said in the blessing.

“May our shared journey forward be one of greater reconciliation and hope.

“May this plaque stimulate, inspire and strengthen us and all who will see it in the years to come.”

The blessing followed the church’s normal Wednesday Eucharist 10am service, which 19 people attended.

Christ Church’s Reverend Gunnar Rippon said in the church’s calendar the feast of the Holy Cross is remembered.

“The Bishop spoke of the connection of the cross of Jesus which we as Christians are committed to proclaim reconciliation with God and reconciliation with First Nations people,” he said.

Volunteer callout ongoing

By CORAL COOKSLEY A COMMUNITY Volunteer Expo held in Beechworth earlier this month came up trumps for Wooragee Landcare member Peter Mourik.

The second annual event hosted by Beechworth Lions Club on Sunday, September 11 drew interested people putting their hands up to help across a number of community organisations.

Mr Mourik said for people living in Beechworth and surrounds, volunteering is a chance to help give back to the community in areas of their interest.

“People are healthier if connected to others,” he said.

“The Expo is all about exposure and we have many things that have interested people such as the workshops on fungi, cultural burning, native plants and orchids, and we have an orchid walk coming up next month.”

Mr Mourik said volunteers had become increasingly difficult to find, with most community organisations losing numbers particularly during the covid times, and not gaining new ones.

With Wooragee Landcare and Beechworth Urban Landcare Sustainability (BULS) groups now working together, Mr Mourik said both groups hoped to increase membership from ap-

plication forms taken on the day.

For Indigo Shire Council’s Tourism and Industry Services coordinator, Jen Allan, it had been fantastic to have volunteer opportunities showcased in one location.

“People could see the breadth and depth of opportunities that that might suit their particular interests and sign up,” she said.

“We were very happy to have met new people and tell them about opportunities in our areas and had a number of application forms taken,” she said.

Lions president John Eldrid said the day brought community groups together

for locals to find out how they could become a volunteer.

“We had people through the door, excellent exhibitors, and people networked,” he said.

Lions member Iris Mannik said the Expo let people showcased diversity of the volunteer community organisations and what the groups did for the community.

She said directories had been placed in the Beechworth Library and Council Chambers at Mayday Hills.

“People can pick up a copy or go online through Council’s website and contact individual community groups,” she said.

Letters to the editor Beechworth’s Historic Carriages Collection fate is in crisis AS Queen Elizabeth this week was farewelled on an historic gun carriage, the world community demonstrated an imperative to respect tradition and heritage as an important link with one’s forbears, witnessing what they once also experienced, saw and felt.

In the same week, news emerged that the enormously culturally-significant Historic Beechworth Carriage Collection is planned to be relegated to a farm shed kilometres out of Beechworth.

This is an absolute travesty of logical thinking in the light of a clear and present alternative (the years-long-vacant refurbished Beechworth Railway Goods Shed) being available.

An increasingly cynical public is asking why the collection can’t be relocated there immediately and indeed permanently installed there during the National Trust’s planned conservation work.

Funds of $750,000 through federal grant and community contributions have already been outlaid over the past four years on the goods shed with council recouping nothing whatsoever in rental.

Ousting the once well-supported and promoted collection to an out-of-town farm shed on private property, inaccessible to the general community, tourist visitors or study groups interested in the National Trust’s conservation method is absurd and is clearly unsuitable as a tourism destination now or ever.

Moving the carriages once is fraught with

potential damage en route.

Is this vitally important asset to be hidden away and on the whole further neglected before a possible second move back to Beechworth in the distant future?

Priceless heritage assets belong to history and future generations and must not be subject to the whim or neglect of any particular administration.

We need to step in before this well-predicted crisis further places the collection in jeopardy.

Adopt the obvious solution of transporting them once, and once only, to the Railway Shed.

School play to rock Beechworth

By CORAL COOKSLEY ACTING in hilarious roles has been a lot of fun for local students, with rehearsals ramped up over the school holidays for a production set for the stage next month.

The play will be the first performance to entertain crowds in three years due to a hiatus from COVID-19 impacts.

Beechworth Secondary College student Ella Pund will be among 28 cast members in the school’s production of ‘The Next Generation School of Rock: The Musical’ where the young actor plays the comedic role of Dewey Finn.

The story follows Dewey, an ambitious failed rock star who decides to earn extra cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious secondary school where he turns a class of straight-A students into his dream rock band.

“Dewy stole his friend’s job and it’s a very funny role where I get to do a lot of silly things,” Ella said.

Samara Bright plays the role of Rosalie Mullins, an uptight and highly strung headmistress of the elite school driven by success and prestige.

Samara said the play gave everyone a chance to sing and to show their acting abilities.

The pair said the play had helped bring everyone together in a different way from around the school.

Drama teacher Sarah Lockwood said the production was good for the school community, with her favourite part of the day being rehearsals.

“It’s all coming together

and students are so excited,” she said.

Ms Lockwood said local primary schools will be invited to see the play for free.

The rock musical was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Julian Fellowes and debuted on Broadway in 2015.

It will be presented by the college at the Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall on Friday, October 14 at 6pm, and Saturday, October 15 at 12.30pm and 6.30pm.

Story book characters come to life at Yackandandah Primary School

By CORAL COOKSLEY YACKANDANDAH Primary School students had fun bringing story book characters to life last week to observe this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week.

Principal Michael Edwards said the special event celebrated the best children’s literature for the year.

“It introduces children to quality, new literature each year and helps demonstrate that reading and literature is something that

is fun and valued by the whole community,” he said.

“This year’s theme, ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’ resonated with much of children’s literature - imagination, creativity and a whole world of possibilities.”

“There is room in open ended themes like this for everyone to engage with reading and literature in a way that is best for them.”

Mr Edwards said the school opted to save Book Week celebrations until the end of a busy term to give the significant occasion the attention it deserved.

New Albury-Wodonga hospital a top priority for Hawkins CROSS-border state and federal investment in a new greenfield hospital for Albury-Wodonga is at the top of the list of health priorities for Independent candidate for Benambra, Jacqui Hawkins.

Ms Hawkins released her health policy on Friday and said the need for a new single-site hospital for the border was a standout feature of conversations she had had with representatives of local health services, as well as community members across the electorate.

“Health facilities in our electorate were already struggling to meet the needs of our communities before COVID-19, but the pandemic has stretched these resources even further,” Ms Hawkins said.

“Hospital beds in Albury and Wodonga, in particular, have been in short supply during the past few years, with admitted patients having to wait longer in emergency departments as a result.

“This has had a domino effect hampering the efforts of emergency departments to offer care to those attending in an emergency.”

Ms Hawkins said the need for a new greenfield hospital for the border was now critical.

“Our health professionals and community have been crying out for this investment for years, to no avail,” she said.

hospital for Albury-Wodonga with co-located services, including a centre of excellence to train a professional and localised health workforce and attract specialists; • State Government investment in enhancing existing GP and community-care services, to ensure local people have access to preventative health infrastructure how and when they need it; • a reassessment of the provision of ambulance services to our electorate, and greater investment in paramedic training, resourcing and infrastructure to improve ambulance response times, particularly across Indigo Shire; • ongoing funding for mental health support and outreach services for communities recovering from disaster; • investment in the development of our regional health workforce, and state government support attracting, retaining and building the skills of local health professionals, including in the

Ms Hawkins said she acknowledged the dedication, hard work and skill of local healthcare professionals in supporting and caring for communities during the past few years.

want to recognise the magnificent job they have done, against such incredible odds, to keep us as healthy and well as possible,” Ms Hawkins said.

“We owe it to our health professionals to invest in the infrastructure they need to do their jobs to the highest possible standard, in a way that protects their own

health and safety.”

Ms Hawkins said she looked forward to working closely and constructively with the government of the day, if elected, to secure a healthy future for Benambra.

Beechworth’s Neil Funston will focus on how problem solving helped develop processes for many well-known

products appearing on today’s supermarket shelves.

Mr Funston will relate his career as a problem solving engineer with a number of shared examples.

“I will also spend a little time talking about my work in the community and my charity work - not because I crave recognition but more because I am proud of that part of my

life, and I want to inspire others to help those less fortunate than themselves,” he said “I hope the audience will find inspiration to do things in their life that they may have thought not possible but also, I hope to inspire people to dedicate some of their time to helping others.”

Mary-Rose advocates for Stanley to be reinstated as a town

MARY-ROSE Riley was born and spent her childhood in Traralgon, south of this area across the Great Dividing Range. She has lived in Stanley for close to nine years.

What’s your job?

I’m a visual artist and educator.

What brought you to this role?

When I was nineteen, at teacher’s college in Melbourne, the art teacher told me I should be at Art School. I said, “What?” There’s a school where you just do art every day? That was a turning point. But I was enamoured of the beauty of the natural world from a very young age. And I had discovered that drawing was a way to understand whatever I saw.

What do you love about your job?

The ideas mostly, and playing with various materials. The process of making something deepens my understanding of whatever ideas I’m exploring, be it through drawing or painting or sculpture. It becomes a dialogue, firstly between me and the work, and then between the work and anyone who views it once it’s out in the world. This is what I love about teaching too, the spark that jumps between two or more minds. I love the moment when a light turns on in a student’s eyes when they recognise some wonder in their own or someone else’s work.

What do you do in the community?

I’m part of a small group of artists in Stanley.

We meet once a month. Earlier this year we put on an exhibition to encourage each other and to share what we do with the community and beyond. I help out the Stanley Hall committee if needed, and am in the process of training as a volunteer for the locally run post office.

What is the most important current community issue for you?

The lack of a thriving centre in Stanley since the close of the school and the general store, where people naturally gather.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Mary-Rose Riley I would like to see Stanley reinstated as a township so that small businesses can open in the centre of town. It would be good to have a thriving hub that runs on more than the hard work of volunteers who are trying to keep all of the public facilities afloat.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Waste, environmental concerns, and poverty. It seems to me they’re all linked by a culture of excess at one end and severely limited access to resources and education at the other.

The good work being done by many people, especially on a community level is beginning to change this.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would like to have met my Dutch grandmother. I would take her for a walk up in the Dingle, the forest behind us here, and have a picnic at Murmungee Lookout.

Why would you show her that?

To give her a sense of her daughter and grand-daughter’s life here on the other side of the world. Mum and I both love a beautiful long view.

What book are you reading?

I always have a couple on the go. Wolf Kahn’s America: An Artist’s Travels. He’s a landscape painter who also writes stories of his travels. And ‘Grown Ups’ - a novel by Irish author Marian Keyes.

READY TO GO: Beechworth Bushrangers star all-rounder Kayde Surrey will be looking forward to a return to two-day cricket this WDCA season.

WITH the start of the cricket season less than a month away, the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association (WDCA) and their new head honcho are making final preparations to kick off the summer of cricket in the North East.

Justin Kelly will lead the association through the 2022/23 season, taking the mantle from Greg Hoysted.

A long-time servant of the association and executive, Kelly said the season was shaping up to be a strong one.

“The last couple of seasons it’s started late due to COVID so hopefully it should start on time,” he said.

“Greg Hoysted gave us a fair bit of time up our sleeves to get organised, and said he didn’t want to do it.

“He couldn’t fit it all in with his Benalla Bushrangers commitments on and off the field, as well as the Over 60s cricket, so something had to give.

“I’ve been on the (WDCA) executive probably the longest, got approached to put my hand up and do it by a

couple of committee people, and that’s how it went.

“There’s a good crew, probably 10 people from different clubs on the executive, we all chip in and it makes life easier for everyone.”

Kelly said he aims for a smooth and largely uninterrupted season, a novel goal given the previous two years.

“We want to keep improving communication between clubs and players, it’s always a good thing to have a smooth communications via email or websites, which is probably easier than it was 20 years ago with social media,” he said.

“I suppose COVID is still going to play a part.

“We’re going back to twoday cricket, some players might be available one week and they might not get COVID in the second.

“So that’ll throw up a challenge, but we’ve brought in a rule to cover that where if teams are disadvantaged due to COVID they can bring someone in or someone up from A reserve to fill in for A grade.

“Apart from that, weather always plays a bit of a part

With dwindling umpire numbers an ongoing concern, Kelly said the lucrative increase in pay for umpires had to come from somewhere and the clubs were happy to do it.

Umpires can earn up to $200 per game for the 2022/23 season.

“The clubs and the executive decided to increase their fees just to try and inspire some others to take it up,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of young kids put their hand up already so that’s good.

“They’ll probably umpire with a more experienced fella so that’s good.

“It’s not good that clubs and players have to fork out a few more dollars to play, that’s a disadvantage of it, but it was just getting to the critical stage, so we had to bite the bullet and increase the fees a little bit.”
