River access left to rack and ruin: Tilley BENAMBRA MP Bill Tilley has backed calls to action on the state of public camping spots along the Murray River.

Upper house MP for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, addressed Victorian Parliament on Wednesday on the “neglected” camping grounds and river access points.

“Doolans Bend is a disgrace, you need a monster truck to drive down the rutted roads and the place

is overgrown with weeds,” she said.

“Richardson’s Bend has been closed since the 2022 floods – it’s padlocked with no explanation why.

“These were once iconic, family-friendly camping spots for the general public.

“Today it appears it’s a case of lock it and walk away.”

Mr Tilley said action was needed now.

“About this time last year I was promised that these

and other spots along the Murray would be tidied up and opened to the public before Easter, I should have asked which Easter,” he said.

“This is the mob that made a big deal out of creating water frontage camping on famers’ land across the state and yet they can’t look after their own patch.

State funding to boost recordkeeping at local cemetery

By RYAN MALCOLM NEW IT equipment funded by the State Government is expected to play an important role in assisting record keeping at Chiltern Cemetery and allow ease of access for the public and cemetery members.

The Chiltern Cemetery Trust was recently awarded $2278 under the government’s 2023/24 Cemetery Grants Program, with the funding immediately directed towards upgrading the cem-

etery’s waning IT infrastructure.

Trust member Wendy Grover said the funding had been 10 years in the making, and will assist essential record-keeping at the site.

She said upgrades were needed to improve the cemetery’s accessibility for the public and local members, as well as to support the hand-over of information when needed.

Across the North East, seven other cemetery trusts received varying funding between $4200 and $28,200, including

Boorhaman, Eldorado, Tarrawingee, Myrtleford, Harrietville, Havilah and Milawa.

Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said the grant funding would be valuable within the community.

“Cemeteries play an important role in our local community – this grant will allow them to get much-needed upgrades,” she said.

The grants are designed to support volunteer-run cemeteries in operating as “peaceful and welcoming” places of remembrance

for the community.

Grant rounds are awarded twice yearly, with applications for the current round set to close on March 31.

“Providing Victorians with peaceful places to visit and honour loved ones who have died makes these grants all the more important,” according to Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas.

Student volunteers to bolster Beechworth Biennale initiative

By CORAL COOKSLEY A FORMER Beechworth Secondary College (BSC) student is excited to be a volunteer for next month’s unique Beechworth Biennale being held between March 8 and 12.

The second volunteer-run event held is set to draw huge crowds of art and history lovers to the town from near and far to experience the work of 16 highly acclaimed artists from around the nation.

Creatives will present works in sound, sculpture, photography and film bringing the festival to life with projections on three buildings lighting up the town at night.

Among many intriguing historic sites, works will be showcased in the barrel cellar below the Hotel Nicholas, the Powder Magazine, the grand Italianate façade of the town’s former Ovens Goldfields Hospital and an abandoned swimming pool in the Old Beechworth Gaol.

BSC graduate Rubi Taylor has joined around 15 BSC students and 50 locals who have put their hand up to volunteer and said she was eager to help out.

“You get to see what happens in an art festival and meet the artists,” she said.

BSC year eight student Isla Baird said she was looking forward to meeting many people visiting Beechworth.

“The Biennale shows Beechworth can be different,” she said.

“We have a small committee team and we would not be able to run this exciting event without volunteers,” she said.

Ms Milne said contemporary art to be presented is challenging, interesting and beautiful, showcasing the town’s extraordinary heritage buildings and sites.

“It is a dialogue between new works and new ways of thinking for our historic town,” she said.

Biennale artistic director Nina Machielse Hunt said people are interested in art and history and interpretation.

Unveiling Beechworth’s hidden treasures THE Beechworth Biennale kicks off in just four weeks’ time and is set to showcase some of the town’s hidden treasures.

Starting on March 8 until March 12, thousands of people are expected to come to town to experience the work of sixteen highly acclaimed artists presenting works in sound, sculpture, photography and film.

“This year we have a full program that is supported by volunteers at each site; visitors can pick up a map and explore all the works for free in their own time or join one of our volunteer-led guided tours or see the works at night on the Curated Supper tour.

“There will be a real festival atmosphere with works on display in the day and projections on three buildings lighting up the town at night.”

POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash in Indigo Valley on Friday night.

A motorcyclist is believed to have lost control while navigating a bend on Wodonga-Beechworth Road around 8.26pm.

CPR was performed at the scene, however, the solo rider died.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

Beechworth kiosk centre stage for Red Cross Appeal

By CORAL COOKSLEY EVERY day help for people in need will be boosted with donations by locals wanting to make a difference to the lives of others in next month’s annual Red Cross Calling Appeal.

Australian Red Cross cans have rattled for more than 75 years around the nation for the appeal with Beechworth branch members raising a total of more than $137,200 in donations since 2002.

Beechworth branch chair Julia Smith said funds raised is a tremendous community effort.

“We thank our local community for continuing to support Red Cross in this very important annual appeal,” she said.

This year’s local campaign being held at the Beechworth kiosk near the roundabout begins on March 1, from 10am to 2pm, with a kind request for people to dig into their pockets.

Members will also be at the kiosk on Saturday, March 2, thereafter most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month at the same time except over Easter.

The volunteer group will be selling freshly baked goods, jams as well as raffle tickets for three prizes generously donated to the branch.

“Gwen arranged about sixty collectors in Beechworth, Wooragee and Stanley who collected door-to-door when possible before COVID restrictions,” she said.

“We collected on average about $7,500 each year.”

The branch chair said the annual amount had significantly diminished with door-to-door collections and collectors stopped since then.

“Cash usually given to our collectors by residents has been replaced by credit or debit cards,” she said.

“We instead have collected donations at the town kiosk since 2021 and last year’s total was $2516 - the largest amount for three years.

“We hope this year’s collection will be as good or even better.”

Ms Smith said local Red Cross volunteers Wendy and Simon Kelly took up the coordinator reins for the Appeal two years ago.

Red Cross Emergency RediPlan booklets will again be available to help people plan for emergencies such as bushfires and floods.

“Even advice on incidents such as a fall in people’s homes that can lead to a stay in hospital,” Ms Smith said.

“It is hoped that this advice can

help people lessen the impact of emergencies by being prepared.”

Ms Smith said the campaign offered a great opportunity to unload five and 10 cent coins that may be filling jars or containers in the home.

“Donations will be put to good use to help fund various programs carried out by Red Cross such as patient transport, disaster and recovery, telechat and breakfast programs,” she said.

People can make donations by EFTPOS, credit card donations, or payments at the kiosk.

Local youths sought to lead shire’s futureproofing approach FOUR young people aged between 12 and 19 are being sought to join Indigo Shire’s Youth Advisory Group.

The group, which is funded by the Australian Government, meets fortnightly to participate in a variety of activities aimed at promoting resilience-building in communities impacted by bushfires.

Indigo Shire is one of eight local councils currently undertaking the ‘Future Proof: Young People, Disaster Recovery and (Re) building Communities’ program, alongside two Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, Victoria University, two Local Learning Employment Networks (LLENs) and Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic).

The initiative was established local-

ly in January 2023, with nine young people lending their time for the inaugural advisory group.

To apply for the group, members must be living, studying or working in Indigo Shire.

Members are also remunerated at a rate of $35 per hour of their time, and also receive access to free training in project management, emergency preparedness, public speaking, governance processes, leadership, peer facilitation and other relevant community activation expertise.

BEECHWORTH Music Festival’s fun-filled family event ‘Spring Ditch’ is set to draw big crowds again next Saturday March 2 at Stanley’s Recreation Reserve.

It’s a ‘tip of the hat’ to the former Stanley New Year’s Day Sports held for more than 140 consecutive years until the 1990’s.

Locals Lex Fletcher and Rikki Raadsveld founded Beechworth Music Festival with this year marking its 10-year anniversary in bringing festivals to the local community while the unique event ‘Spring Ditch’ is in its third year.

A smorgasbord of original and diverse Australian music will be headlined by wellknown local Yackandandah band This Way North supported by Melbourne’s Woodland Hunters, a four-piece immersive rock and roll outfit.

Other performances include Beechworth’s Mountain Folk Trio, up and coming local singer songwriter Brydie Rose and a young local heavy rock band ANOX. Beechworth Music Festival’s Lex Fletcher said a great lineup of local and regional acts will entertain the crowd.

Master of Ceremonies is “Voice of Flinders Street” Laurence Hewson bringing his

unique spin for entertainment too.

Former graduate from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is the roving performer, funster and juggler Tully Fedorowjtsch who will entertain Spring Ditch goers of all ages.

DJ Jane Doe will keep the music playing with two fabulous DJ sets from her eclectic music collection.

With great local food and full bar on the day, Spring Ditch also includes the community run events with family activities, demos and competitions and much more.

Among competitions is the Spring Ditch Rural games featuring Ireland’s Strongest Man ‘23, World Log Lift Champion ‘23 and Bundanoon Stones Champion ’23, Sean Gillen.

“It’s a fabulous day with a touch of nostalgia for families and people of all ages,” Lex said.

Lex said both BMF and Spring Ditch started with small ideas which developed into much bigger ones.

“We are blessed by creatively talented people and surrounded by an artistic Beechworth community who are passionate about arts and music,” he said.

“The community embraced our ideas and made BMF and Spring Ditch what they are today.”

Rikki said Spring Ditch being

held in Stanley brought nostalgia to the town as well for her personally.

“I competed in horse events and so did my kids,” she said.

Lex said some performers in the past had bounced off the festival into huge musical careers, including Shepparton’s Adam Briggs.

“He is a national figure for First Nations culture, a huge influence on social media and an incredible music artist,” he said.

“There’s been blood, sweat and tears with an emotional and financial roller coaster with many challenges, but we have both enjoyed every minute and we really love it.

“We feel lucky to be living in Beechworth in an incredible community behind everything we do.”

The pair said they are grateful for sponsorships from businesses from the Stanley, Beechworth and surrounding communities who had donated items for fundraising efforts being run on the day.

to intensive Emergency workshops to Changes farming production open for community WITH increasing extreme weather events, as experienced this week across Victoria, Indigo Shire will rollout a series of community workshops to help residents better prepare for emergencies.

The First 72 Hours workshops, designed to educate community members about their responsibilities in an emergency and how they can be prepared, are being held in 14 locations and online, between March and October.

The workshops focus on helping individuals and community groups plan to ensure their own needs can be met if emergency services are unable to provide basic necessities such as food, water and shelter in the first three days of an emergency event.

Mayor Sophie Price said following the Black Summer fires in 2019/20 and the flooding and storm events of 2022, improving community resilience to cope with the impacts of emergencies is critical.

“Unfortunately, emergency events are on the increase, particularly as more extreme weather patterns come into play, so it’s critically important

that our communities are empowered to respond appropriately in an effort to minimise panic, stress and trauma.” she said.

Council’s community hub and outreach officer, Jessica Oldmeadow, who will deliver the workshops, said they are a valuable opportunity for residents to learn why it’s important to make an emergency preparedness plan.

“Whether we’re talking about a flood, fire or storm, there are lots of existing resources that explain how to make an emergency plan, but many in our community fail to understand why a plan is so important,” she said.

The workshops, made possible through funding from Emergency Recovery Victoria, will also help participants plan for scenarios they might not have considered, including how to ensure elderly relatives and pets are catered for, or documenting what items their children consider sentimental.

“Often parents know what is sentimentally important to young children, it might be a favourite teddy bear or doll, but have you ever had that conversation with a teenager?” She said.

BE READY: Families are being encouraged to attend Indigo Shire’s upcoming emergency preparedness workshops.

“By having these types of conversations and planning ahead, there’s less confusion, stress and potentially valuable time lost if you need to evacuate.

“Participants will be equipped to know who, when, where and what they need to create their emergency plans and how to safely, successfully and confidently put them in place.”

The workshops, the first of which is being held in Sandy Creek on Wednesday March 6, are open to anyone within Indigo Shire.

All community members are encouraged to attend, as well as agency volunteers, who are invited to share their experiences.

Existing community groups are also encouraged to book tailored group workshops so they can plan together.

The changes will exist as a new clause in the Victoria Planning Provisions and apply to all planning schemes in Victoria.

The clause outlines guidelines for the location, design and management of new and expanded animal production facilities such as pig and poultry farms, intensive dairy farms and feedlots, but does not apply to grazing animal production.

Agriculture Victoria executive director SarahJane McCormack said the proposal aims to provide primary producers with clearer and more consistent planning requirements.

“The proposed changes have been designed to provide a transparent and enforceable clause that sets best-practice benchmarks for developments and provides certainty for investment in the animal production industry,” Ms McCormack said.

“The clause aims to reduce the regulatory burden for animal production, while continuing to protect

Christ Church concert series kicks off next week

MUSIC lovers can next week tune in to a performance by one of the nation’s most remarkable and versatile pianists.

Josh Hooke, a young performer described by the late Viennese virtuoso concert pianist Paul BaduraSkoda as ‘one of the most gifted of his generation’, will play Mompou, Mozart and Schumann in Beechworth’s historic Anglican Christ Church on Sunday, March 3.

The extraordinary young pianist will play Mompou’s ‘Paysages’, Mozart’s ‘Sonata in C minor K457’, Schumann’s ‘Arabeske’ Op. 18 and ‘Carnival’ Op. 9 at the keyboard of the church’s Kawai grand piano in the first of this year’s concert series.

Originally from country Victoria’s seaside town of Wonthaggi, Josh said the love of being a concert pianist is derived from the ability to express so much from just one instrument.

“The variety and depth of music for piano seems to go on forever,” the ex-

ceptional pianist said.

He said inspiration in becoming a pianist had been gradual where he had been lucky to meet a few important teachers at the right time.

“They really inspired me, and I discovered certain pieces and composers I really connected with, and it all started to take shape from there,” he said.

With the love of being a pianist, Josh said it has given him a chance to meet new people, travel, and to share something he really believes in.

“I hope the audience will enjoy my music and are curious to discover and hear more,” he said.

Josh performs throughout Australia at many of the nation’s leading concert venues and regularly performs in Europe and the UK. He has been a finalist and prize-winner in competitions and has played in masterclasses for distinguished pianists.

Anglican Christ Church concert series coordinator, Jamie Kronborg, said the Christ Church concert series brings extraordinary,

emerging and established performers to Beechworth.

“We have found again in the past year audiences respond to the prospect, challenge, tension, mood and beauty of music in this setting,” he said.

“The church is a gracious old building with a fine acoustic for voice, keyboard, wind and strings.

“It houses two equally fine instruments - a new grand piano and a colonialera pipe organ.

“Not many buildings in our part of the world have all of these elements.

“We’ve found that bringing performers and instruments together regularly in such a setting draws a loyal and growing crowd of concertgoers from North East and border communities who come to experience diverse programs and music styles.”

Jamie said this year the church is hosting four concerts - two with performers from the region and two with visiting musicians or singers from farther afield to add to the appeal and help raise money for piano and organ maintenance.

Alleged concrete fraudster denied bail AN alleged concrete fraudster has been denied bail after allegedly scamming more than $170,000 from multiple customers in Wangaratta and district.

SERGEANT Luke Vogels told Wangaratta Magistrates Court this week that the accused had allegedly scammed a total of $170,500 from 25 victims spread across the North East for concrete works he allegedly never undertook between June 2022 and January 2023.

SGT Vogels said of all 25 victims had allegedly been quoted for concreting works by the accused’s Benalla business Goonawarra Concreting.

A majority of customers found the concreting business online and enquired with the accused through text or email, which is where most of the quotes were done, according to Sgt Vogels.

BEFORE the agreed start dates, the accused was said to have asked customers for continuous follow-up payments for a range of reasons, from materials, inflation, accommodation, claiming to have had their bank account hacked and for additional financial support due to divorce settlements.

THE accused would then allegedly not appear on agreed

work start dates, often citing a broken leg, financial difficulties, COVID-19 or other illnesses including shingles as reasons for not appearing.

WHEN approached for refunds, the accused allegedly told customers the business would not offer refunds or would cut communications with the customer entirely.

THE accused only visited and started work for one of his 25 customers; for half a day and with work done to an “unsatisfactory standard”, according to Sgt Vogels.

THE accused had allegedly scammed individual customers for as much as $38,000 without a refund, with some offering additional money while in communications with the accused in good faith.

SGT Vogels said the money had allegedly all been spent in online gambling agencies by the accused, who admitted to be battling a gambling addiction.

APPEARING remotely from custody at Marngoneet Correctional Centre, the 48-yearold man had already spent 383 days in custody for the alleged offending prior to Monday’s bail application.

PROSECUTER Scott Davison told the court all alleged offences occurred while the

accused was on community correctional orders for prior offending and had failed to appear before the court on a warrant in September 2022.

MR Davison said the accused had been extradited from South Australia in February 2022 after fleeing to the state while being pursued for a prior offence in Victoria and allegedly committed similar scam-based crimes in Victoria while living in SA. DEFENCE counsel Georgia Kaye-Helmot said her client could be bailed to a family friend’s address in Melbourne for an interim period of time and would be willing to accept strict bail conditions.

MAGISTRATE Peter Mithen acknowledged the accused’s vulnerabilities stated in a psychologists’ report and the length of time in custody already served, however, he said he was not satisfied with the risks of re-offending due to the accused’s prior history.

“WHILE these are allegations, with the strength of this case… there is likely to be a fairly hefty imprisonment,” he said.

“THE community ought to be protected.”

THE matter will return for a committal mention on March 7.

Volunteering support pushes local events MADELEINE Quirk was born in Melbourne and moved to Beechworth 10 years ago.

What do you do workwise?

I moved to Beechworth for a teaching position at Beechworth Secondary College. I’m now working at Rutherglen High School in administration.

What brought you to your role/career?

After years of working in corporate roles, I decided to return to university and become a teacher. I was looking for a more dynamic and meaningful career.

What do you love about your work?

I really enjoy working with young people and helping them achieve their goals. It’s been great being part of the community in Beechworth and watching my students thrive in their lives after finishing school.

What do you do in the community?

I love volunteering. I’m on the committee for the Beechworth 2 Bridge walk for preventing suicide and tackling the stigma of mental illness. We walk from Beechworth to Bright over three days and we get people from all over to come together and support each other. Some walk to remember loved ones lost to suicide, others to share their own mental health journey and some to support family and friends. I’m lucky to drive the support bus for the three days and ferry the tired walkers when needed. Despite the serious issue we are promoting – as a group we have lots of laughs and hugs and celebration.

This year for Spring Ditch I will be also driving the shuttle bus to and from Stanley so everyone can have a great time listening to great music and participating in the fun and games – it’s a fantastic day for everyone.

You’ll also find me helping out with the fabulous Drag’d Out Festival.

I hadn’t been working for a while and volunteering had been a great way to stay

Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

I would love to see a heated pool open all year round in Beechworth. I have auto-immune arthritis and hydrotherapy is an excellent way to stay active. There are many older people and people requiring assistance in town and I believe such a pool would be beneficial and well patronised.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

Human rights violations – we are dealing with distressing news of conflicts where innocent people are continuingly being used as collateral by all sides. I believe we need a stronger international voice against these atrocities and a greater ability to prevent them happening.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire, or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

I would love to meet American actor Alan Alda best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce on the TV series MASH. He is also a director, screenwriter, and author. I would love to take him out to all the wineries and eateries in the North East and talk about science and life and my favourite television show MASH. What book are you reading?

“The Year I Met My Brain” by Matilda Boseley. It’s a ‘travel companion’ for people who have been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.

I was recently diagnosed and it’s been a very eye-opening and relevant read.

Four-legged social media star draws support for Sunshine Ride A STAFFORDSHIRE Bull Terrier with his own social media following has helped raise more than $4500 for next month’s Sunshine Ride.

Marley J the dog has 19,000 followers on Instagram with his owner, Raylene Cullen, recently posting about the 24-hour bike challenge in support of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

Ms Cullen, who owns Executive Pets dog walking and pet care service in Albury, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021.

A post on Marley J’s Instagram page said the cancer had spread to her brain with two tumours found in 2022, and a third last August.

“Mumma had an episode at work and started bumping into things and seeing flashing lights,” the post read.

“She drove home, running over two gutters on the way.

“Dad took her to emergency and after a series of scans, they found her brain tumour had grown and was pressing on nerves.”

Ms Cullen underwent surgery and radiation

which finished in November. She is due to have follow-up scans this month.

The social media post prompted an outpouring of support from all over the world, with donations coming in from America, Holland and the UK. Ms Cullen originally set a fundraising goal of $500, but was amazed to reach almost $3000 in 24 hours.

“A lot of donations came through Instagram from people who I’ve never met, and through my clients,” she said.

“We try and spread love out there to people through both Instagram and my business, and I think we just get it back.”

The Sunshine Ride will be held for a fourth year on March 15 and 16.

Ms Cullen will ride with team Family Vet Centre at Adrenaline Boxing and Conditioning where 20 exercise bikes are expected to be set up.

Other teams include Albury Wodonga Cycling Club, St Monica’s Primary School, Rand Walbundrie Walla Giants and police from Albury and Wodonga.

Veterans and vehicles to reunite at Corowa Swim-In THE 44th annual Swim-In and Military Vehicle Gathering, the largest in the southern hemisphere, will be held in Corowa from March 11 to 17.

Presented by the Khaki Vehicle Enthusiasts Incorporated (KVE), the theme for this year’s event is Year of the Blitz, celebrating the iconic wartime Blitz trucks built by Chevrolet and Ford.

As well as the Blitz vehicles, all other kinds of ex-military vehicles will be taking part, from motorcycles to trucks and armour.

Spectators are welcome to visit the Ball Park Caravan Park where the majority of participants camp for the duration of the event.

KVE secretary Jan Thompson said veterans and vehicles are invited to gather at the Corowa RSL on Thursday, March 16 from 11am until 2pm, where there will be a display of restored vehicles used by the Australian armed forces over the years in the carpark.

“All ex-service veterans and personnel are invited along to be reunited with vehicles they may well have driven or rode in, with a military band from Kapooka also performing for the occasion,” she said.

On Saturday, March 16 there will be a parade followed by a static display of all the participating vehicles at Corowa Showgrounds, along with a photo shoot and swap meet.

Vehicles will line up at Bangerang Park from 7.30am, with the parade to the Corowa Showgrounds to begin at 9am, heading down Sanger Street, and spectators are encouraged to line the streets.

Producers welcome biosecurity levy changes, but more needed

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE PROPOSED changes announced last week by the Federal Government in restructuring its biosecurity protection levy have been welcomed but more needs to be done according to a local cattle farmer.

Federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said importers, who already contribute almost $220 million towards biosecurity cost recovery, would put in “$28 million more under the Albanese Government’s new model”.

The new model calculates the levy based on each farming, fishing and forestry industries’ gross value of production, over a rolling three-year period, rather than simply recovering an

extra 10 per cent of existing statutory levies; based on a mix of values, volumes and masses.

The changes mean dairy farmers’ annual contributions will drop from $3.2m under the old levy model to $3.1m, while the burden on wheat growers will drop from $8.11m to $5.74m.

The cattle industry is expected to contribute $9m in levies, while wool growers tip in another $1.84m.

Mudgegonga cattle producer Loretta Carroll said the proposed changes were a positive step but there is still cause for concern.

“It’s certainly a positive step toward a fairer and more transparent model, tailoring the levy to individual products and goods so it won’t be paid multiple

times as would have been the case if it was attached to the cattle transaction levy,” she said.

“Another positive is that the charge will be introduced for goods imported by air or sea valued up to $1000 at a rate of .40c per parcel and they will also be looking at reforming border fees and charges to meet the actual costs of managing the biosecurity costs.

“However, it is proposed that the levy rate for producers will now be set on the basis of each industry sector’s proportional share of total gross value of production (GVP), based on a three year average.

“According to Minister Watts the cattle industry contributed around 18 per cent of total GVP between

2019-20 and 2021-22 which means our sector would pay around $9 million annually which he claims will be split proportionately between all producers.

“My concern is that if we are saying we have around 40,000, to 50,000 cattle producers in Australia we may still be paying roughly $200 annually, on a proportional basis, which I believe is still excessive and will be in addition to what we already pay.

“It can tell us where we really come from,” he said.

“Dr Terry Schultz lent me a book 20 years ago ‘The Iceman Otzi’ - where a frozen body had been found in the Italian Alps.

“The scientist proved it to be 5300 years old and also found a living descendant in his DNA record bank.”

Dr Mourik said this led to reading the book “The

Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry” by the late Professor Bryan Sykes about the migration of all humans from Africa.

The book delves into his research on the gene which passes in a pure form from generation to generation through the maternal line.

Dr Mourik said the professor found all humans had descended from seven women, despite skin colour, race or religion.

He said the discovery of King Richard 111 buried under a carpark in Leices-

ter, England was further proof of the gene with identical MtDNA in close relatives and where he never had children.

“This is scientifically reproducible proof and not a belief,” Dr Mourik said.

The Friday, March 1 event starts at 5pm.

A $5 entry donation is requested, and refreshments are provided.

Tribute shows a hit in Wangaratta

By ANITA MCPHERSON ENTERTAINING shows which celebrate legendary artists and popular music from years gone by continue to draw strong audience numbers to the rural city’s live music venues.

It seems if the real thing is no longer accessible, punters are happy to join a crowd of like-minded fans, rekindling memories or enjoying their favourite music played live, thanks to a growing number of talented tribute acts who go to great lengths to recreate an authentic experience.

Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention (WPACC) Centre venue manager Tanya Camplin, said tribute shows will always have a place on the centre’s annual program

and are featured throughout the year, with many so popular they draw their own fan base.

She says she thinks it’s because music and artists are so immersed in our memories, both happy and sad.

“Music is really powerful and can often take people back to a different time and place in their lives,” she said.

“Tribute shows pays homage to that music and audiences are really engaged - they love to sing along to their favourites.

“Because these shows are performed in a theatre, they use amazing stage lighting and audio visual effects and are quite interactive, and you wouldn’t get that in a different setting.”

THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE: Echoes of Pink Floyd are among the tribute acts that use lighting and other audio visual techniques to create an authentic concert experience, coming to Wangaratta on June 21.

Ms Camplin said some of the most popular are ABBA tribute shows, which are popular with all ages “be-

cause everyone knows the words”, but others go right back to much older artists or genres, including those

from the 50s and 60s.

Among this year’s lineup are Rave On - The Buddy Holly Story, which is a matinee show on March 7 at 10.30am, The Roy Orbison Story on April 5, and Creedence Clearwater Collective on April 6.

“The Robinson Brothers (on March 1) are always well received - a quality act who has been in the industry for the long time - and their 60s shows are a lot of fun and really interactive with the audience,” Ms Camplin said.

“Johnny Cash is always a hit with fans, and Get Rhythm The Johnny Cash and June Carter Show, will be performed on September 7.”

Also on the program this year, Melinda Schneider returns to the stage to pay tribute to the legendary

Doris Day on May 9, the Beach Boys Experience arrives on May 11, Australia’s enduring Queen tribute, Bohemian Rhapsody, performs on June 7, with Echoes of Pink Floyd bringing their carefully crafted homage to Pink Floyd’s spectacular Signs of Life concerts of the 80s, on June 21.

Tennis season reaches halfway mark

By GREG CLYDESDALE ROUND five of the Beechworth Tennis Club summer season saw some surprising results as teams settled into familiar combinations.

Beechworth Coffee Roasters had a close tussle with Shingleback Off Road with only two games separating them at the end of the night.

Will Stanistreet and John Shehan began the night with the only emphatic 8-0 win of the night, but Karen Potter was the core of a strong fightback, combining with teammates Ben Sockett, Christie Bence and Jeremy Schmolzer to just fall short.

Will and John had the support of Ann Henderson who is proving to be a wall on the net and Simone Sockett who battled hard all night.

Burder Industries and Pritchard Plumbing also had a tight result with Kevin Ormrod having a very solid night in combination with Kimberley and Matilda Taylor for impressive wins.

Ben Ryder, Kelly Clarkson, Arcady Sitchenko and Tonya Say fell short by just four games.

Alpine Survey and Mapping could not hold out Nor Mac Rural with Mick Cavallin anchoring steady results with Will Sargent, Sue Fendyk and Olivia Bennett.

The whole team has improved through the season and are really enjoying the benefits of improved shot making.

Darren McCormick was missed but the sliced backhand of Simon Maughan combined with Alice Corcoran and Ruby McCormick to push their opponents in every game.

The surprise of the night was Myrtleford Furnishing and Floors who had a big win over Alpine Indigo Accounting.

Tom Holles found his best form while Shem Rinaudo was using every bit of his reach to create a difficult target.

Paige Campbell combined easily with those

teammates with only Greg Clydesdale having an inconsistent night.

At the half way mark of the season Beechworth Coffee Roasters have a slight edge on Normac Rural on the table and they will meet in round seven.

All other teams will shape the contest as every match up can go either way as results are showing. Shingleback Off Road have the bye on February 28 with Indigo Real Estate meeting Myrtleford Furnishings and Floor, Burder Industries playing Alpine Survey and Mapping and Alpine Indigo Accounting playing Pritchard Plumbing.

What seems certain is

that it will be another late night under the lights as results are so close.

The weather has been magnificent for playing and the organisers hope it does not affect the competition as the season moves into the final weeks.

The all-weather courts are proving a real attraction for improving skill, the consistent bounce is a far cry from the old courts and Ben Croome will continue to develop juniors through the hot shot programs.

“To get a couple of guys to hang in there with the bat for a period of time and to help out the other week was pleasing.

“A lot of people say “if you get the Surrey’s out that’s game over” or “if you get the top four out it’s over”, which sometimes can be the case, but we’re all about trying to build the club for the next period and give them younger guys a chance.”

In other Beechworth grades, B grade were handsomely beaten by 237 runs against Yarrawonga/Mulwala, while C grade narrowly defeated Benalla by two wickets in a thrilling chase.

LAST Sunday the Beechworth Golf Club had a very successful junior clinic.

It was fantastic to see 29 kids come along, ranging in all ages.

A big thanks to the parents, all the members, and Penny Graeber who stuck around and helped out, it was greatly appreciated.

Everyone who was in attendance will be contacted shortly about the next junior day the club will hold.

Of course new kids are most welcome to attend.

In the afternoon there were 10 players out contesting the final round of the Summer Cup. The winner of the daily event was Xavier Palamarczuk (4) with 35 points on a countback from Andy Croome (16) 35.

Ball winners were Rod Shaw (31) 33 and Brian Cropley (45) 32.

Nearest to pins went to Andy Croome on the 10th and Phil Pelgrim on the 17th.

Congratulations to Zane Howard who is this year’s Summer Cup champion with his 3 round score of

102 points (40,32,30).

Runner up with 98 points was Andy Croome (35,33,30).

Third place was Brian Cropley with 95 (35,32,28).

Evenly balanced Crucial run chase hangs in balance with Beechworth needing g 219 to win

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN BEECHWORTH’S A grade side will need to bat deep at Baarmutha Park tomorrow to all but guarantee a finals spot, chasing 219 against Wangaratta Magpies.

Needing to win to stay in the finals hunt, the Magpies put on 218 from their 73.4 overs last weekend with skipper Jack Davies leading from the front, piling on 70 from 139 deliveries.

The Magpies got off to a nice start with opener Cooper Matheson (46) teaming up nicely with Davies, taking their side to 2/89 before Matheson was dismissed.

Beechworth bounced back through the middle order with opening bowler Dean Fitzpatrick (3/31 from 13 overs) and Richie Worcester (2/57 from 22 overs) wrestling back momentum.

At 7/176 the Wanderers looked like they would keep their counterparts under 200, but Matt Gathercole’s 28 off 37 balls at the tail was valuable, taking his side to 218.

Wanderers captain Brenton Surrey said he was pleased with how his team fought back into the match after a slow start in the field, ruing dropped catches off the bat of both Matheson and Davies.

“We bowled pretty ordinary early, we didn’t help ourselves with some dropped catches but I thought after the first hour and a half we got ourselves back into it,” he said.

“We bowled in better areas, it looked like it would have been tough to restrict them to under 200 but after tea we did reasonably well and they hung in there with the bat.

“It’s an even sort of game at the moment; runs on the board may be a little beneficial, but it’s certainly not out of touch.”

Tim Cogger was able to round out the Magpies tail by taking all of the last three wickets of the innings to finish with figures of 3/29 off almost nine overs.

With fourth-placed City Colts facing a difficult run chase against Benalla and sixthplaced Ovens Valley restarting tomorrow at 4/5, a successful chase against fifth-placed Wangaratta could seal a finals berth for Beechworth.

In all five games of the 2024 half of the season the Wanderers have been the team to bat second with mixed results chasing totals.

Surrey said their last batting display against City Colts a fortnight ago filled him with confidence his will bat the overs against a formidable pace bowling attack.

“We’ve got to bat the day, their bowling is very strong,” he said.

“They don’t have a spinner but they’re going to bowl with four, five or six bowlers who are going to bowl as strong as any team going around and if not the strongest.
