Ideally, Mr Tilley said the Liberal Nationals saw a future emergency hub that may include Ambulance Victoria on a site closer to the Hume Freeway that carries 17,000 vehicles a day.

Chiltern also sits astride the Melbourne-Sydney rail corridor that carries freight and passenger trains, while

a high-pressure natural hi h t l gas pipeline passing through the town.

“The volunteers at Chiltern do an enormous job in tough circumstances and are expected to turn out to a huge variety of calls,” Mr Battin said.

“And what thanks do they get? They have to put their gear on next to running trucks, the female volunteers don’t have their own area and their two trucks barely have room.

“That’s “Th t’ nott good d enough, h and this announcement fixes the problems.”

Mr Tilley said the current station was undersized when first opened and was still to have had an official opening.

“This is a volunteer brigade that is and has the potential to be called out to significant incidents on the freeway, in town and major bushfires and local blazes,” he said.

Mr Battin said the desperate need for new fire sheds was again ignored in this year’s Victorian budget.

“The current sheds (at Wooragee) are a disgrace one dates back to 1927 and the other is a 30-year-old Zincalume construction,” he said.

“The brigade, that recently celebrated 95 years of volunteer service, uses a makeshift meeting room in the old shed after previously being forced to have open-air meetings on the driveway.

“This is a brigade where callouts range from traditional farming and lifestyle properties as well as the peri-urban fringe of Wodonga.”

The owner of the land adjoining the brigade’s station has already provided it with a parcel of land that extends its existing footprint and the CFA itself has acknowledged that this is the No.1 priority for CFA District 24 according to Mr Battin.

“Wooragee CFA are a pillar of the local community and perform vital work in a variety of scenarios,” he said.

“They deserve fit for purpose facilities, and that is exactly what this announcement provides.”

Mr Tilley said Wooragee volunteers have been the last line of defence in major bushfire campaigns in 2003, 2006 and 2009 and yet their needs continue to be ignored.

“In 2020, the then Minister agreed that this was a priority, earlier this year the District CFA said it was ‘numero uno’ for them,” he said.

“We will just get this built.”

Burke Museum showcases Ernest Marcuse works

By CORAL COOKSLEY FINE art work of exceptional drawings showcasing unique talents of a late well-known prominent artist are on display for 12 months at the Burke Museum.

Twenty-five works in the museum by German born Ernest Marcuse (1900-1985) depicting various Indigo Shire landscape scenes and buildings in Beechworth, Yackandandah and Chiltern from his attraction to Victoria’s North East have been donated by his son Peter.

Burke Museum collections manager Ashleigh Giffney said Ernest had been born, raised and educated in Berlin.

“He attended some of the best design and art schools but with World War II and when the Nazi Party took over Germany in the early 1930s, being Jewish it became increasingly difficult for him to find work,” she said.

In late 1938 Ernest moved to London where he married and in the following year undertook a voyage to Australia where the couple had been accepted as refugees being part of the Jewish displacement that fled the rise of Nazism in Europe.

Ernest became a casualty of the Australian Government’s policy initiated at the time where anyone born in an enemy country became a stateless individual.

“Dismissed from the newspaper, he had a lot of his citizenships

rights removed and as he couldn’t work he undertook his own work as a commercial artist where he was commissioned but in 1942 regained his citizenship,” Ashleigh said.

“And from there, he was employed by the Australian Defence Force, and asked to undertake similar illustrations as he did for the Argus.”

Bonegilla had been Ernest’s first introduction to the North East

when stationed there at the officers’ training school.

“On his time off, he travelled to other regional towns including Yackandandah, Beechworth and Chilton, and he would illustrate the landscape,” Ashleigh said.

“His works are in places such as the National Portrait Gallery, the National Art Gallery, New South Wales Art Gallery as well as the Australian War Memorial.”

Burke Museum and Cultural Heritage manager Cameron Auty thinks visitors who see the display will gain a deeper insight into World War II, being a refugee, and how intriguing it would have been for a Jewish person from Berlin, to all of a sudden find himself in a place like Yackandandah sketching the local museum.

“It was a huge journey,” he said.

Grant funding has been received from the Australian Government Cultural Gifts Program for acquisition of the drawings while framing has been funded with a grant from the Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) program administered by the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Incorporated (AMaGA).

Local primary school team takes out soccer trophy in district competition

A LOCAL primary school soccer team came up trumps with a top award in the Wodonga Winter Primary Sports Carnival held last Friday.

The excited Beechworth Montessori Primary School mixed team of older boys and girls took out the prized trophy as the C Division winner.

Montessori teacher Kat Beaton said all teams that played had been from the North East region in the Wodonga District.

“We won a trophy in netball a number of years ago but this is the first time we’ve ever won the soccer competition in C Division,” she said.

“We have kids at the school who really love to play soccer at lunchtime and we have quite a lot of footy players here too.”

The school had entered a netball team that showcased a terrific effort as well.

Principal Ben Socket said a great team spirit had been shown by both team players.

Calls for Indigo Shire residents to remain vigilant against rising COVID-19

By CORAL COOKSLEY A SURGE of COVID-19 cases across the state is being reflected in Indigo Shire as cases continue to rise.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer update on Wednesday stated that the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants which are now dominant across Australia, are expected to continue to cause increases in new cases, reinfections and hospital admissions with the third Omicron wave of the subvariants now dominant in Victoria.

Indigo Shire’s active cases rose from 178 on Monday to 183 on Wednesday with 36 new cases in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday.

According to the State Government coronavirus website, other local government areas within the North East - Wangaratta, Wodonga, Alpine Shire, Benalla, Moira Shire and Mansfield Shire are also experiencing a rising trend.

A spokesperson on behalf of Albury Wondonga Health’s Ovens Murray Public Health Unit (OM PHU), said recent eligibility changes for the fourth COVID-19 vaccination now allows for people 30 years old and over to get vaccinated.

“Those aged over 50 are particularly at risk and we urge all those eligible to make a booking at their local GP, pharmacy or the Wodonga Vaccination Hub to get vaccinated to protect themselves, and to help protect their community,” he said.

“We are asking people to remain vigilant as the latest strains of COVID-19 are highly contagious.”

“Vaccination is one way of protection, but we also encourage people to practice COVID-safe behaviours, including mask wearing when indoors and where social distancing is not possible.”

Beechworth’s Lindsay Rankin, who has had his fourth AstraZeneca covid vaccine shot, said the world has not had to deal with such a serious virus as COVID-19 in living history.

“Everyone should do everything they can to help the situation and protect their family and community by getting their fourth vaccine dose,” he said.

The Federal Government has a handy “Vaccine Clinic Finder” that allows people to search for a vaccination location based on address, and even filter based on type of vaccination - Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax or AstraZeneca.

Local residents object to townhouse development proposal

By SHANE DOUTHIE A GROUP of residents who live near a proposed townhouse development at 59 Last Street, Beechworth have lodged an objection to Indigo Shire Council.

Lead signatory on the objection, John Weretka, said members of the group viewed the development as being “inappropriate” for the neighbourhood and the town.

“The proposal would see what was originally half of a residential block being turned into high-density housing on allotments of 200m2 of two-storey townhouses, probably for holiday accommodation,” Mr Weretka said.

“This is not in keeping with the general character

of the neighbourhood and raises significant infrastructure and amenity problems.”

The objection included a number of concerns including the housing density and destruction of neighbourhood character, impact on neighbourhood amenity, stormwater, sewage and water management issues, and their belief the development would make little improvement to the current housing stress in Beechworth.

“Approving this proposal would lead to the inclusion of a medium-level density development into the context of a low-density neighbourhood,” the objection read.

“All properties in the Last Street/Frederick Street/Wood Street/Sydney Road neighbourhood have

a single dwelling on them and generally have extensive gardens, improving the green amenity of the town and the neighbourhood, helping to improve food security, and contributing to the amelioration of climate change.

“Although the proposal includes green areas, they are not on the scale of the surrounding neighbourhood.”

The objection claimed a two-storey townhouse development would therefore be exceptional in the town context, and certainly within the context of the immediate neighbourhood of the proposal.

There were also concerns the same development company purchased the adjoining property and approval for the first could lead to a

precedent for similar development next door.

The objectors were also concerned increased traffic would increase the risk of road accidents at what they described as an already dangerous corner at Last Street and Sydney Road corner having seen two accidents in the last year.

They said there were already considerable drainage problems with stormwater during intense rainfall events, causing overland flow onto the proposed site from Sydney Road, as well as considerable amounts of groundwater.

Inundation issues arising from these sources and the impact of new dwellings on runoff into adjoining properties must be addressed and remedied before any

further planning permits are granted on Last Street.

They believed the increase of impervious surfaces in the development is likely to increase the danger of inundation and runoff into adjoining properties.

Residents were also concerned the dwellings of the proposed development, which they believed were likely not intended for sale to the elderly or people with families, do nothing to address the issues of housing instability and affordable housing for those who live and work in the town.

“We have looked with alarm on the developments in Wodonga in recent years,” John said.

“Extremely dense housing developments with dwellings on small allotments of

land have appeared in profusion on the BeechworthWodonga Road and in West Wodonga.”Beechworth has not been immune to this, with inappropriate development at the old Tennis Courts for example.

“This is a town that owes its continued existence and its tourism economy to the fact that it has resisted developments of precisely the kind contemplated here.

“People come to this town to enjoy that it has architecturally significant, often older, homes on large blocks with established gardens — these homes define Beechworth in the popular imagination, not the kind of development envisaged at 59 Last Street, which can be seen in any number of outer Melbourne suburbs.”

Visa letdown

WANGARATTA-based Indi Independent MP Helen Haines has joined a parliamentary delegation to Fiji in an effort to expedite islander workers joining Australia’s agriculture sector amid widespread staff shortages.

Having departed for Suva yesterday, Dr Haines will spend much of the next five days investigating ways to strengthen workforce partnerships between Pacific Island nations and Australia, following the decision by the incumbent Labor leadership to scrap a dedicated farming visa developed by the previous Coalition government.

Dr Haines said the decision had been largely unhelpful in easing severe workforce shortages in the wake of two pandemic-impacted years for the agriculture sector, but said her focus was now on enhancing the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme.

“Personally it’s unfortunate - the farming community tells me they aren’t happy with it,” she said.

“I have heard from farmers who lost 80 per cent of their crop last year simply because they couldn’t find anyone to pick it, and they’re bracing for the same this year.

“It’s one thing in a pandemic, but we are nearly three years into this now and the borders are open - it’s time for governments to step up.

“There’s real concern from the agriculture industry that we don’t have enough workers and we’ll be short going into summer picking.”

Key citrus, pumpkins, hops and cherry harvests are fast approaching, while many of the region’s vineyards will be searching for staff ahead of the upcoming 2023 vintage.

Dr Haines said the local wine industry, which often relies on backpackers to fill key roles on the vineyard, had also had previous success employing workers from Thailand, an opportunity which would be blocked following the Federal Government’s revocation of the agricultural visa.

“Backpackers are a key workforce in the (wine) industry - they’ve been very

slow to return after COVID,” she said.

“We could have been striking deals with countries like Thailand and Malaysia right now, but instead we are back to the drawing board.

“It’s a real mistake and I have urged the Agriculture Minister to reverse that decision.

“Longer term, we need to be looking to expand eligibility for these visas beyond the Pacific - if there are workers in South East Asia, or India, or South America, who want to work on Aussie farms, and farmers here who want them, why do we don’t enable that to happen?

“It’s pretty basic stuff.”

As part of the delegation, Dr Haines was also expected to meet with members of the Australian Pacific Training Coalition to investigate a two-way partnership on behalf of Alpine Health, which would strengthen pathways for islander aged care workers and nurses.

“There’s an opportunity for students to come across and gain experience - we need to do this really ethically in providing training and education,” she said.

“The Pacific Island family is super, super important to Australia.”

Local author shares Chinese history knowledge

By CORAL COOKSLEY A BEECHWORTH historian and author delivered an intriguing account of her research into Beechworth Chinese history as an invited guest speaker at a Friends of the Burke Museum event on Sunday.

Vivienne McWaters in conversation with Friend’s president Dr Kate Sutherland shared her knowledge of the 19th Century Chinese and their contribution to Beechworth’s development where her talk captivated an audience of 30 people.

Dr Sutherland said the enthusiastic speaker about her discoveries showed a deep respect for the Chinese people with their achievements in Beechworth under difficult circumstances.

“The degree to which the 19th century Chinese contributed to the development of the town - parades, the old hospital, the Benevolent Asylum, exhibitions and the welfare of people had been incredible,” she said.

“Viv has gathered an enormous amount of data about a group of people who have largely been neglected but who contributed to Beechworth and its early development.”

Vivien then started dig-

ging and a vast variety of objects were unearthed while her research amassed volumes of documentation.

“Had Viv not unearthed the artefacts and other

information through detailed research, we may never have come to know much of what she has come to record,” Dr Sutherland said.

“We are much richer for her decades-long uncovering of the lives of the 19th century Chinese of Beechworth.”

Dr Sutherland said Viv is an invaluable resource as an expert in the field of her research.

“I think people would have gone away thinking about Viv’s commitment and enthusiasm, given she has been absorbed by the subject matter for decades,” she said.

“The audience would have noted Viv’s absolute pleasure in sharing what she knows and she has to be one of our local treasures.”

With her own Chinese ancestory, Beechworth’s Kathryn Chivers had been delighted to find people interested in the town’s Chinese history.

“Viv has a wealth of knowledge from her discoveries,” she said.

“If it hadn’t been for Viv as well as other researchers, we wouldn’t have the information in the Burke Museum and the history would have been long forgotten,” she said.

“People were surprised to learn where the Chinese community had lived.”

Local health services miss out North East overlooked by State Government in $ $162m COVID-support fundingg pp

By RYAN MALCOLM A $162 million state funding boost to support hospitals facing increased demand has overlooked the North East, as the region continues to experience an uptick in COVID-19 transmission.

Announced earlier this week, 12 major hospitals in metropolitan Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat are set to share in the funding, which will support an additional 400 specialist healthcare workers, as up to 2000 health staff are furloughed each day under mounting flu and COVID pressures.

The initiative is expected to provide offload nurses, triage doctors and discharge coordinators in order to accelerate ambulance responses and oversee the transition of care into the home over the coming months.

However, both Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) and Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) are set to miss out on the most recent round of support, with a State Government spokesperson detailing the decision reflected each hospital’s broader impact on the health system.

“Hospitals included in (Sunday’s) funding announcement were selected based on their share of state-wide emergency presentation, the potential contribution to system-wide improvements in transfer times, and on hospital composition and feedback,” the spokesperson said.

“Ongoing monitoring and evalu-

ation will inform any potential expansion of such funding in the future.”

Some 274 active COVID-19 cases were yesterday reported in Wangaratta local government area, 53 more than the day previous.

Across the state, the prevalence of the new Omicron BA.5 variant has seen a spike in demand for hospital care in recent weeks, with government officials reporting a 99 per cent increase in COVID19-related hospitalisations since June 22, with a 60pc increase in ICU admissions during the same time frame.

The 2022/23 state budget included a $12b commitment to support more paramedics and health workers across Victoria, with 5000 nurses set to undergo training in the near future.

However, Benambra Liberal MP Bill Tilley has called for more immediate support to assist North East and border communities to manage the statewide impacts of the pandemic.

“Is it going to take people dying in the street for this Labor Government to understand the desperate plight of our health services?” Mr Tilley said.

“The focus on Melbourne and its satellite cities is another slap in the face for the Border and North East health workers and patients.

“Significant investment is needed in the North East to maintain the capacity of our vital health services to meet the needs of our communities - the region needs its fair share of taxpayer funds,” she said.

“We need money so Alpine Health can get on and redevelop Bright hospital and deliver highcare residential aged care.

“We need money for a fit-forpurpose Albury Wodonga hospital.

“And we need funding so all our health services can respond rapidly to any surge in COVID cases.”

“The number of times someone has said to me ‘Well that’s your generation’s problem, we created it, but you’ll have to fix it’ is ridiculous,” she said.

“Climate change, high cost of living, impossible costs of housing. But okay, bring it on. Albert Einstein said that ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same

thinking we used when we created them’ and young people automatically think differently.

“So actually listen to what young people have to say, take it on board, and be prepared for change!

“If you want to help a young person become the best version of themselves, start with a conversation, ask them where they want to be in five years or what they are interested in or ask their opinion on a current matter.

“Young people aren’t ignorant and do understand how the ‘real world’ works.

Young people read media more than ever before, and whether they like it or not, they are made aware of the environmental, political and economic issues.

“Next, offer your support and reassure them that their thoughts are valid. If you want to take it a step further and

take action to help, you can.

“This could be in the form of ‘I know someone that does that, I’ll give you their number’ or if you know of some kind of forum they can share their opinion, tell them about it.

“Our local communities are very engaged ones - there are plenty of ways to have your opinion heard, but these need to be welcoming to a younger age group, and not just those at the right hand of the local high school principals.

“If you want to see a change, you don’t necessarily have to make it, but you must support the young people trying to.

“And to all the young people out there, accept the help of those around you, they too know what’s going on.

“Advertise it and we will come, we want our opinions heard.”

Education funding equity key to better outcomes AN initial question in a series of four to local community members in the lead up to this year’s George Briscoe Kerfferd Oration titled ‘Australian Education: How did we get here and where are we going?’ has been answered by Beechworth’s Lesley Milne.

For the question ‘The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) reports that Australia’s academic performance in reading, science and mathematics has been in continual decline ffor the last 20 years. Why has this been happening?, Lesley said the decline in the academic standards of these subjjects was a hugely complex problem. p “Solutions to complex problems require careful study of the interrelated causal factors - location, culture and community, school resourcing, equitable access to housing, health, economic and social stability, and what constitutes quality teaching and learning,” she said. What we do know is that solutions to the problem of declining literacy and numeracy standards have up until now been largely ineffective. Perhaps the problem is less about getting ‘back to basics’ and more about systemic inequality.”

“In an article published in the Guardian in January this year, Finnish educationaly ist Pasi Sahlberg identified

a fundamental design flaw in the Australian education system, namely the principle of providing choice to parents. This principle assumes that choice in the marketplace is a driver for lifting the quality of education on offer.”

“Any parent or carer who has agonized over the selection of the best school for their child is likely to value the principle of personal choice very highly. Freedom of choice is considered a fundamental right in a liberal democracy, right?

What, however, if we considered ourselves not simply as consumers but as citizens?

“What if, as citizens we made decisions about the education of the next generation as a means of creating a vibrant, collaborative and equitable society rather than one based on separatism, elitism and privilege? What if we recreated the Australian education system where choice was replaced by the universal provision of high-quality education, by the state?

“Because choice is not equal, most families lack the financial freedom to choose a school in which they’d like to enrol their child. This fundamental inequity profoundly affects the educational experience of our nation’s children.

“Indeed, as Elizabeth Far-

“Many argue that private schools significantly

reduce the burden on the public system and yet, according to the 2021 Report on Government Services, the combined commonwealth and state government funding for private schools increased by more

than six times that for public schools over the past decade. At the same time, private school fees have tripled since 2000.

“As a result, the proportion of students in government schools has declined and the independent school sector has been steadily growing - 46 per cent of school students now attend non-government schools.

“This huge investment into private schools has certainly increased their popularity but it has resulted in a growing number of students left behind in a woefully underfunded public system.

“Considering the bigger picture, Sahlberg suggests that ‘Australian education is an outlier also in a sense that schools in different parts of the country are more socially segregated than in most other rich countries’.

“There are undoubtedly serious implications for learning where the system ‘concentrates disadvantaged students in disadvantaged schools (that is: where more than half of students come from disadvantaged homes)’.

“Neither is this a question about the quality of teaching in the public system. There is little evidence that attending a non-government school will secure a better education. While

there may appear to be differences in the academic achievement of students in private schools, these tend to disappear once socioeconomic background is considered.

“The 2018 Program for International Assessment (PISA) tests showed attendance at private schools was not consistently related to higher test performance.

This is a testament to the teachers in the public system who continue to deliver excellence despite ever decreasing funding, and why as a teacher of 40 years in the government system, I remain a committed advocate for public education. And because like Sahlberg, I believe that ‘there can be no national educational excellence without stronger equity off outcomes. Australia should accept - as many nations acknowledged a decade ago - that equity and excellence are inseparable’.”

Apply for North East soil health community grant applications COMMUNITY groups in North East Victoria with ideas to increase awareness and adoption of land management practices that improve and protect the region’s soils have until August 1 to apply for two grants of up to $7500 each to deliver their programs.

The North East Soil Health Community Grants are allocated through the ‘Securing North East Soils Through Knowledge Exchange’ project that supports community groups undertake activities that increase awareness and adoption of land management practices to improve soil health.

The four-year project is supported by North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA), through funding from the Australian Government.

NECMA project officer Sam Gitahi said the nominated projects should promote community awareness as well as adoption of farm management practices that improve soil condition.

“Acid soils are a major cause of land degradation and threaten the productivity of agricultural soils in North East Victoria,” he said.

“Nearly half of the five million hectares of Victorian land affected by very acidic topsoil - which is indicated by low soil pH - are found in the North East region.

“Community projects could deliver a soil acidity management training workshop and/ or hold field days or other events to demonstrate and share knowledge of practices, innovations, new science or simply test potential solutions to address these problems,” he said.

“They could also test the viability and application of new farming practices, techniques and/or technology, or conduct soil tests to help address the problem of soil pH and soil erosion.”

Community groups should apply using the EOI application form on the NECMA website at 202223 Soil Health Community Grants (necma.vic.gov.au).

Lazy singing for Ukraine LOCAL singer/songwriter Lazy Harry is back with a new collection of songs to be launched at the Wangaratta Library on Thursday, July 28.

Money raised at the launch from sales of the new CD entitled ‘Songs For Peace: a fabulous collection of original and traditional songs for peace’ will be donated to support needy people in the Ukraine.

“I want to support Ukraine because I am horrified by attacks on innocent civilians and children and this new album gives me a chance to do that,” Lazy Harry said.

Lazy Harry’s career has spanned four decades and 16 albums with his last one ‘My Family Album’ released in 2019, but he said that ‘Songs For Peace’ has a different tone to previous albums.

“This new album is full of important messages,” he said.

The first song on the new album is an original called ‘Save Ukraine’ and it calls for the world to unite, do what is right and ‘end the mad war and the pain’.

In the song, Lazy Harry reflects on the sacrifices made in the two great wars so we could live in freedom and implores listeners to remember the errors of the past and ensure we don’t make the same mistakes again.

“As I wrote ‘Save Ukraine’ I realised how fortunate we are to

live in Australia,” he said.

Another original song ‘Bill Birrell’ is a nod to Sergeant William Herbert Birrell, a Beechworth shearer who enlisted with the 7th infantry battalion in the First World War and was killed in action in October 1917 at the age of 38.

“I learnt about Bill from local historian and author Richard Patterson and decided he would be the man for my song,” Lazy Harry said.

Among the cover songs on the album is Strangest Dream (Ed McCurdy), Blowing in the Wind (Bob Dylan), Band Played Waltzing Matilda and Green Fields of France (Eric Bogle) and Where Have All the Flowers Gone (Pete Seeger).

Each of the songs have their own message and reflections of wartimes and those affected by the actions of the decision makers who send their people to war.

Lazy Harry will perform a selection of his work at the launch at Wangaratta Library on Thursday, July 28 from 6pm.

ISLA Fitridge was born in England, raised in Scotland, and lived in New Zealand, Denmark and in other towns in Australia before a move to Beechworth six years ago.

What’s your job?

I’ve been a marine biologist for almost 20 years, specialising in marine invasive species, and am now a researcher with the Invasive Species Council.

When we moved to Beechworth, I started growing flowers and learning floristry, and so I also run my own floral business here called Scout’s Garden.

What brought you to this role?

My love for marine science started at eight years old when I decided with absolute determinedness that I’d be a marine biologist when I grew up.

I have loved every second of my career and am still so passionate about my work.

Scout’s Garden came into being after my dog Scout passed away.

She was my four legged soulmate.

Growing flowers and creating beautiful things with them became a form of grief therapy for me after she died, and then grew into the business I have today.

It’s a beautiful legacy to leave me. I still miss her every day.

What do you love about your job?

As a marine biologist, I’ve helped many maritime industries find ways to mitigate and manage marine pests.

The problems and impacts vary incredibly, so it’s always really challenging.

Scout’s Garden enables me to spend time outdoors, nurturing bee-friendly ethically grown flowers and being consciously creative with them.

I love the challenge and process of creating.

What do you do in the community?

I run workshops throughout the year which offers the community an opportunity to take some time for their mental wellbeing and get close to nature through flowers.

I recently moved into a small studio space at the old Railway Station in Beechworth, so now my workshops will be more frequent and accessible.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Beechworth Access to health care.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Our local GPs are amazing and work so hard, but it can be challenging to secure a timely appointment.

We need to make sure they are better supported.

We need to attract and retain new graduate GPs and great nursing staff - perhaps that can be achieved through financial/HECS incentives, and investment in health care facilities, housing and daycare.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

The impact of invasive species, which are often immense and usually irreversible.

Invasive species have caused the irretrievable loss of native species and ecosystems, and may be as damaging on a global scale as the loss and degradation of habitats.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

The French impressionist painter Claude Monet.

I’d take him to the little pond in the Chinese Gardens in the golden glow of a late autumn afternoon with his easel and paints.

Why would you show him that?

Monet was incredible at capturing light and shadow in nature.

The Chinese gardens are a magical spot and I think he’d feel very inspired.

As the sun sets, I’d watch him work, share a platter of local goodies and wine, and talk (very rubbish) French with him.

What book are you reading?

‘The Flower Fix’ by Anna Potter - a great source of wild, creative floral inspiration!

Bushrangers have finals on their mind

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE Beechworth Bushrangers are now just one win away from locking in a finals spot after a 20 point win over Mitta on Saturday.

The Bushrangers were given a scare by the second last placed Mitta side conceding seven goals to one in the last quarter, but were able to sneak over the line.

Coach Tom Cartledge said that losing two players to injury earlier in the game and wounded players playing through injuries made it difficult for the team to finish the game how they would have liked.

“We played a really good first three quarters to get ourselves in a really good position, we just took our foot off the pedal a little too much in the last quarter,” he said.

“We like to think that we play a pretty physical brand of footy and at Mitta, it’s always tough because they like to go pretty hard themselves.

“You don’t want to concede seven goals every week in the last... but we won’t harp on it too much, we’ll just address it and then move on.”

This weekend the Bushrangers will take on Wodonga Saints at home.

Although the Saints are sitting third last

on the ladder, Cartledge said the team will not be taking them lightly.

“Wodonga are typically a side where if you let them hang around, they’ll stick around,” he said.

“We’ll look to take control of the game as early as possible and make sure that it’s out of the question as early as we can.”

The Bushrangers will be keen to get the win at home over Wodonga as it would solidify a spot in finals.

If they do win, Cartledge said managing players who have been carrying injuries would become a top priority for the team, before getting their best side back for the

final rounds of the regular season to try and ensure that the team is as healthy as possible and flying into finals with momentum.

“After that [next win], the next two weeks we’ll rest blokes as required,” he said.

“We won’t be pushing anyone 80 per cent or below fitness-wise to play if they don’t have to.

“Leading into the last two or three games of the year we want to have some continuity in our side where we’re putting our best side on the park and putting our best foot forward and hopefully go into finals with some momentum.”

RUNAWAY WINNER: 2022 Beechworth Golf Club Men’s Champion Vaughan Saunders.

Vaughan club champ THE 2022 Beechworth Golf Club Men’s Champion is Vaughan Saunders with a great three round total of 205 (69,66,70) after the final fourth round was cancelled due to rain.

The final round of the Men’s Championships was to be played last Sunday but after a night and morning of non stop rain it was no to be.

It was decided that due to the full calendar of upcoming events, that it would be just too hard to reschedule the final round in a timely manner.

As was reported in last week’s Advertiser all the grade winners were just about decided before the final round anyway.

In the B Grade it was a massive win to Jacob Howard with his total of 259 (86,86,87) well clear of Peter Smith on 298 (100,98,100).

The C Grade was the clos-

est of all grades with Dave Lang 277 (89,90,98) winning by five shots from Jamie Dolny on 282 (95,92,95).

In the 54 hole handicap it was no surprise that Vaughan Saunders (2) took that out with a nett total of 199 (67,64,68), well clear of Dylan Pool (1) on 214 (74,72,68) and Josh Carr (5) on 217 (75,71,71).

Women Last Wednesday seven women fronted up for the July Monthly Medal.

Obviously the going was tough, with Jan Lang (20) having the best score with 79 nett, and Doyna Collins (42) runner up with 81.

Nearest the pins went to Doyna on the 5th, Glenda

Marshall on the 7th and Jan on the 17th.

Golf this week: Wednesday 8:30am for 9am.

Sunday 11:30am for 12noon. (Stableford).

Also next Sunday a number of men and women are going to Yarrawonga’s Black Bull to compete in the NEDGA 4Ball Championships.
