LOCAL landowners are up in arms over the condition of Fighting Gully Road and blame Indigo Shire Council for its state of disrepair.

Brett Collins, who owns 150 acres of farm land adjoining the road, said poor quality gravel and shoddy repair and maintenance work had turned the road into a floodway and a hazard for local traffic.

side of the road about three months ago and left edges about one metre high and filled up all of the gutters and culverts that used to be there.

“They’ve turned it basically into a channel and after it rains the water gushes down from the top of Buckland Gap damaging the road and flood-

ing into adjoining properties.

“The council has done it to heaps of roads around the shire, even the rubbish trucks can’t get up them some times.

“They spend $900,000 on expanding bike trails but they can’t spend the money on our roads.”

He said council had removed gravel from the road and “dumped it at the tip” because it was obviously not up to standard.

Another nearby resident, Peter Tinney, said the works had created major problems on his land.

“The dam can’t handle it and when it overflowed we lost half our dam wall.

“The dam had handled a flood a few years ago when we had 130mm of rain, now if we get 30-40mm so much water comes in it overflows.

“Last weekend when we were away Brett told us the whole driveway to our home was flooded with water going

under the house.”

He said he had spoken to council staff a number of times “but nothing ever happens”.

A council spokesperson confirmed some material in Fighting Gully Road had to be removed as it posed a safety risk to road users with the vast majority graded to the sides of the road after a prolonged period of rain before Christmas.

“This material is now dry and will be blended back across the road within the next two weeks,” the spokesperson said.

“Council is dealing with a

large volume of storm-related requests across the shire, in particular the eastern end.

“It is working as quickly as possible to clean up, however, this is likely to take some time.”

The council spokesperson said council will endeavour to notify all residents who have expressed concerns of the impending rectification works on Fighting Gully Road.

Mr Tinney contacted the O&M Advertiser the day after we made enquiries to council to let us know that crews were at work removing the aforesaid windrows.

Indigo Australia Day celebrations next week

AUSTRALIA Day events will be celebrated in four towns and one village across the shire next week on Wednesday, January 26 except for Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen that regrettably had to cancel their events.

A community barbecue and award announcements will be held at the Barnawartha Soldiers Memorial Hall from 7.30am to 9.30am hosted by the Barnawartha Soldiers Memorial Hall Committee while Wahgunyah will celebrate the day along the same lines from 9.30am to 11am at Willows

Recreation Reserve with the event hosted by the Wahgunyah Progress Association.

Yackandandah Lions Club will be hosting their town’s celebrations at Sir Isaacs Park on Isaacs Avenue from 8am to 10am where the community will enjoy a community BBQ breakfast, entertainment and live music with award announcements.

Kiewa Tangambalanga will hold their event hosted by the Tangambalanga Lions Club from 11am to 1pm with a community lunch, entertainment and award announcements at the Kiewa Memorial Park on Kiewa East Road.

Stanley’s get-together with an open invitation to all starts at 4pm at the village’s recreation reserve in the grounds of the Stanley Primary School where a small ceremony will also take place for the launch of the ‘Walking Stanley Project.’

Walking Stanley Project launches next week

By CORAL COOKSLEY BIRDS, ecology, mining, the story of fire on the plateau and people and place are five key information themes along 20 kilometres of regenerated tracks with signage around the Stanley Plateau that can be explored by walkers following a launch at the village’s Australia Day get-together next week.

The project developed by Stanley Landcare members over the last five years but hindered by COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions for two of those, includes shorter one around the village as well.

Stanley Landcare secretary Dr Tony McDonald said the rich diversity of the area along with beautiful scenery can be enjoyed by tourists who visit Stanley as well as locals.

He said a descriptive brochure with a map has been published for the walk with signs along the track for identification.

A hands-on project with many Stanley community members taking part in the planning began with community consultation around 12 years ago by Stanley Landcare members.

The project supported by DELWP, Indigo Shire Council and the Stanley Athenaeum as well as from community members and families

ALBURY Wodonga Health (AWH) advised on Wednesday that there have been no further positive COVID-19 cases identified at BHS’s Blackwood Cottage where two cases had recently been reported.

AWH acting chief executive officer Lucie Shanahan said surveillance testing and monitoring of the outbreak had now been stood down with no further cases over the last couple of weeks.

Ms Shanahan said the acquisition source could not be confidently identified.

“We do remain fairly confident that it came from a visitor to the health service over the Christmas New Year period,” she said.

Adventure films clinched for Beechworth showing

By CORAL COOKSLEY A STANLEY cyclist’s bike ride documentary across Siberia will be added to eight action-packed short films as part of a 40th birthday celebration for an Australian sports adventure publication.

The films will be shown on Sunday, May 30 at Mayday Hills Art Society’s ‘Upstairs Playhouse Theatre’.

Among them to celebrate Wild Magazine’s birthday late last year where the films are travelling around the nation, will be a four-minute film where editor James McCormack follows mountain biker Dave Atkins as he explores the mountain biking trails around Alice Springs.

Another, ‘Ironstone,’ follows a group of cavers’ seven year journey in attempting the first successful throughtrip as they search for an elusive entrance to a cave deep underground that followed cave explorer Tony Salmon discovery deep in New Zealand’s South Island’s wilderness in 2009.

Mr Salmon had embarked on a 750 metre cave exploration alone until too dangerous to continue solo.

“As there are many adventurers around Beechworth and the shire, organisers thought it would be good to bring a similar event here,” he said.

Mr Privett, who cycled across Siberia, said organisers had worked hard to bring the films to Beechworth.

Mayday Hills Art Society’s Christine CansfieldSmith said the movie theatre brought people together.

“We love people from the community to use the facility,” she said.

Other short films include ‘In the Footsteps of John Stuart, Living on the Line, Wild Magazine history, Western Faces, Blue Mountains and Dark Water Segment.

Mr Privett said two sessions will each run for two hours starting at 1.30pm followed by a 4.30pm one where movie-goers need to arrive 15 minutes beforehand.

“It costs $10 for adults and $5 for children under 15 with payment at the theatre,” he said.

Drinks and snacks can be purchased during intermission.

The Art Society is located in Kurrajong Way, Mayday Hills near the Ghost Asylum Tours in Beechworth.

Youth Summit sets the agenda

By CORAL COOKSLEY THIRTY young people from across the North East had a chance to voice their concerns about the world around them, delved into visions for the future and developed action plans for their communities at a first-time youth summit held in the Servicemen’s Memorial Hall in Beechworth last month.

The event oganised by Indigo Shire Youth for Climate Action (ISYCA) for 12 to 30-yearolds had been embedded into the Indigo Shire’s Climate Emergency Strategic Action Plan adopted in September 2020.

A founding ISYCA member and a facilitator for the North East Youth Summit, Beechworth’s Ali Thwaites, said participants had identified five top concerns not just climate change (natural disasters, changing weather patterns and impact on future generations) with discrimination (LGBTQIA +, race and gender), lack of minority voices in decision making for First Nations and youth, barriers to sustainable living as well as environmental degradation and extinction as the others.

“Over the three-day program concerns were turned around to see what we wanted our communities to look like and we created our collective vision for the future for North

East Victoria,” she said.

“We then asked what changes needed to happen for our vision to become a reality, talked about how communities can make change and what could be done in developing personal action plans for our own impact in reducing ecofootprints.”

Ms Thwaites said diverse action plans had been developed by the participants.

Among 10 actions plans created, Rutherglen High School students had developed a plan for improving their school’s waste system by having more recycling and compost bins with additional education on how to use them.

“We had action plans about a ‘Festival of the Future’ by Mt Beauty Secondary College for their town to bring people together in the community to talk about the future they wanted to see,” Ms Thwaites said.

“We also had a young group of Montessori and St Joseph’s Primary School students talking about a community garden project to bringing people together and work in an environmental space.”

Ms Thwaites said a Shepparton team worked around habitat restoration as well as for the local farmers market to be sustainable by working with their council and stake-

“Galen College looked at a community arts program and art competitions around the world people wanted to see,” she said.

Others included better engagement of students with First Nations leaders with a cultural festival to learn and celebrate, a sustainability art show to support local renewable energy projects and school climate education visits and letter campaign.

With the final day of the summit that offered a community forum, Ms Thwaites

said around 40 members from the community listened to young people share their ideas.

“It is not often that you have a space in the community where young people can share what they have learned and have their action plans discussed with feedback and advice from experts,” she said.

Ms McGowan said young people had a clear vision with practical projects.

“For example Rutherglen High School students’ with their recycling project are talking to Indigo Shire’s CEO, Trevor Ierino,” she said.

“Sponsors are investing money to support some of

these projects which will help young people deliver them and will they will grow in confidence because they can do it.”

“They have built up good networks with others as well.”

“What I love is our young people are coming back to our community, bringing their skills and sharing what they know.”

The Summit had been based on OzGREEN’s ‘Youth Leading the World’ model - a program where young people gain skills to tackle sustainability challenges, empowers them to take solution focused action to improve their environment as well as becoming positive change leaders.

Ms Thwaites one of seven ISYCA team members who organised the event that ran with help from other trained program facilitators has been a facilitator of the OzGREEN program for close to a decade since she first participated when in high school.

The Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Indigo, Alpine, Wangaratta and Shepparton Councils, OzGREEN, and Women’s Health Goulburn North East supported the event.

DELWP also provided funding to support participant action plans after the summit.

Five- to 11-year-olds vaccinated in Beechworth on Monday

By CORAL COOKSLEY ALBURY Wodonga Health (AWH) advised that 79 paediatric vaccinations had been given to five to 11-year-olds at Beechworth Memorial Hall yesterday when the bus Reggie hit town on Monday.

An AWH spokeperson said the service with the mobile vaccination bus is part of their outreach vaccination program.

Reggie, launched in No-

vember last year arrives in Beechworth specifically for this age group.

Reggie will be parked outside the Memorial Hall in Ford Street from 9am to 2pm on Mondays for the next three weeks from January 24 to February 7.

The bus travels the five shires of Alpine, Indigo, Towong, Wangaratta and Wodonga.

Victoria reduces third dose interval ahead of vax blitz

By CORAL COOKSLEY VICTORIANS over the age of 18 will now be eligible to get their vital third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine after three months, just in time for a walk-up vaccination blitz starting this Friday.

The reduced timeframe of three months, recommended by Victoria’s public health team, means 1.2 million more Victorians can now increase their immunity before school and work returns in full.

The Beechworth Health Service vaccination hub runs on Thursdays from 9.00am to 4.30pm at Bantik House, 58 Sydney Rd Beechworth.

Driver charged: woman killed, four injured in Dederang crash MAJOR Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a fatal head-on collision on the Kiewa Valley Highway at Dederang just after 11.30am last Sunday.

Sadly, the collision claimed the life of a 69-year-old Albury woman, with the driver of the vehicle in which she was a passenger, a 72-year-old Albury man, since released from hospital after sustaining minor injuries.

Another passenger in that vehicle, a 68-yearold from Springdale Heights in New South Wales, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, where she remains.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old Dederang man, and his two-year old male passenger were taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

They have been since been released.

MCIU detectives interviewed the Dederang man on Monday and he has since been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

He has been bailed to appear at the Wodonga Magistrates’ Court on January 20.

Inaugural mini youth musical festival to kick off in Beechworth

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN idea for a mini musical festival in Beechworth has come to fruition for a local young emerging professional singer.

Working with Indigo Shire’s youth officer Sal Kimber, local musician Asha Bright has headed the festival ‘Under the Pines’ organised by a group of talented Beechworth young people to be held on Saturday, January 29 from 4pm to 8pm in the Town Hall Gardens.

With the mini festival part of Indigo Shire’s FreeZA program, Indigo Shire Council’s youth officer Sal Kimber said the event will feature talented emerging acts.

“Every act features musicians under 25 years old, and two thirds of them are from Indigo Shire,” she said.

“It will be a brilliant chance for artists to play to an encouraging and supportive audience.”

Thwarted by ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns and changing restrictions with dates and venues changed several times, Asha said the first-time event which had been close to a year in the making, gave up and com-

ing artists a great opportunity to perform.

Ms Kimber said Asha as the festival’s creative director had curated the line up liaising with all artists as well as arranging bookings and had undertaken many other event organising activities.

“Local young people will be part of the hosting on the day taking on roles such as event and stage managers, and assisting with the sound engineering,” she said.

“We will have in place all COVID safe practices and being a large outdoor space we will be able to create social distance pods so our audience can spread out around the gardens and take in the music.”

Ms Kimber said an annual event is planned for the future.

Event entry is free where a free barbeque will also be provided with other COVID safe social distanced activities featured.

“Bring your own rug or bean bags to sit on,” Ms Kimber said.

Photos help improve patient care A WORLD-first study at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre has found that photographs can help improve the supportive care of cancer patients aged over 70.

However, more research is needed before it can become part of standard practice.

The project, titled Geriatric Oncology in the Instagram Era, was the joint initiative of Border Medical Oncology, the UNSW Rural Clinical School and the La Trobe University John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research.

A $20,000 grant was provided by the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund to trial the use of photos to learn more about the patients’ identity, values and environment.

Project lead, oncologist Associate Professor Christopher Steer, said the photos provided a greater understanding of the patients involved in the study, and resulted in more patientcentred care.

“It helped us focus on what matters to the patients and to not take things for granted,” he said.

“For example, one patient who was in her late 80s submitted a photo of her golf trophies as something that was important to her.

research would need to be undertaken to integrate it into everyday care.

“Photovoice is feasible, but it’s just not practical,” he said.

“We learned that we could do it, but you need increased resources and time to put it into standard practice.”

The eight-month study, completed in November last year, involved 18 cancer

patients aged 70 years and over.

Nine of those patients were asked to provide photographs representing their identity, home environment, something that’s important to them and their mode of transport.

The photos were then used to undertake a 45-minute interview and produce a one-page summary.

The study also included a

15-minute geriatric assessment questionnaire which is still being used at the cancer centre to assess older patients.

Harry Thomas, 75, of Beechworth, was invited to take part in the research after being treated for colon cancer last year.

Mr Thomas, who is chair of the Beechworth Health Service board, believes the project was “extremely

beneficial” in allowing clinicians to understand potential strengths and challenges for their patients.

“Christopher got a good insight into who I am and what I’m about, and you would expect that would result in better outcomes for people,” he said.

Ass Prof Steer said the project has fostered collaboration between the cancer centre and La Trobe with further research to be undertaken into patient-centred care.

Since the project began, Ass Prof Steer said most clinicians now show a photograph of the patient in the weekly new patient meetings.

“This puts the patient more at the centre of our discussions,” he said.

“So, it appears to have had a flow-on benefit for all patients, not just the older patients.”

The project was carried out by UNSW medical student Darren Jayasuriya as part of his fourth year Independent Learning Project.

The findings have been presented by La Trobe’s John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research, Professor Irene Blackberry, to the Australian Association of Gerontology and the Gerontological Society of America 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting.

Tertiary Access Payment eligibility extended MORE regional and rural students will be able to access funding to help with relocation costs for higher level tertiary study, following expansion of the Tertiary Access Payment’s (TAP) eligibility to include students in inner regional areas.

The TAP is a one-off payment for school leavers from remote, regional and now inner regional areas who need to relocate to study at a higher level tertiary institution, helping more students access further education.

Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education Senator Bridget McKenzie said the TAP was introduced as a result of the Napthine Review to encourage regional and remote students to undertake higher level tertiary education.

The payment has already assisted more than 2000 stu-

dents in remote and regional areas.

“This payment will encourage more students to continue their education beyond year 12, by providing eligible students with the financial boost to help them relocate so they can commence their studies,” Senator McKenzie said.

“Eligible students will be able to access between $3000 to $5000 to assist them with moving.

“Regional students typically face higher relocation costs than those from the city.

“The TAP gives eligible students the leg up they need to overcome this obstacle.

“The time leading up to finishing high school and beyond can be a stressful period.

“This funding provides students with the reassurance that support is available to make the decision to continue their ter-

tiary education and the cost to do so easier.”

Minister for Government Services Senator Linda Reynolds CSC welcomed the announcement that the role of Services Australia would expand to include delivery of TAP to eligible university students.

“Since its initial introduction in the 2021 academic year, payments to university students were managed by nominated universities,” Senator Reynolds said.

“Transitioning the full delivery of this payment over to Services Australia will bring consistency in application and better outcomes for prospective students exploring relocation support.”

Regional students can check their eligibility for TAP through the Services Australia website.

SCIENCE COMMUNICATOR: Christine Cansfield-Smith’s passion for botanical art and science led to becoming a founder of the Mayday Hills Art Society that offers art talks and Café Scientifique conversations.

The Tree Goanna - one of nature’s top scavengers MERLIN TZAROS, aged 13, has had a keen interest in nature, especially reptiles, for several years.

He has contributed this week’s article, while on school holidays, about one of his favourite local species.

PREVIOUSLY, we featured the Sand Goanna, the rarer and less encountered of the two goanna species in the North East.

Its larger counterpart, the Tree Goanna, is much more common in this region.

It comes in two forms the usually seen mottled form, and the scarce Bell’s form.

The latter is patterned with large, thick, yellow w and black bands all over the body, while the former is much more like the patterns on the Sand Goanna - small irregular sized stripes, with little spots and speckles over the limbs.

The Tree Goanna is mainly terrestrial, meaning it spends most of its time on the ground, often scavenging for food.

However, it is also equally at home in the trees.

Tree Goannas are very skilled predators and scavengers, often feeding on roadkill and sometimes in rubbish heaps.

Being on the roads means that the goannas are at risk of being hit by vehicles, so care should be taken while driving.

It also hunts for nestlings and eggs, smaller reptiles and pretty much anything it can find and capture.

Goannas, like snakes, have forked tongues, and this is for a good reason.

On the roof of a goanna’s mouth is the Jacobson’s Organ.

When the goanna’s tongue is extruded, it collects scents from the air.

When the tongue is pulled back in, it enters the Jacobson’s Organ, transporting the information gathered to the brain.

Because the goanna’s tongue is forked, one fork will detect more scent than the other depending on where the source of the scent is.

Methodically, the goanna will then track down the source, whether it be food, a mate, or a rival.

Tree Goannas are oviparous, meaning, like most reptiles, it lays eggs.

In a single clutch, a Tree Goanna will lay between 8-11 eggs.

These eggs will be laid in a burrow in an active termite mound, quite like the Sand Goanna.

Locally, a good place to find Tree Goannas is the Warby Range and the Killawarra Forest, searching on warm days by slowly driving around the forest roads.

CHRISTINE Cansfield-Smith was born in Brisbane and spent some of her childhood in Lae, Papua New Guinea (PNG), where her father was the senior airline pilot with former Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) responsible for opening up all of the airfields after the war. She has lived in Beechworth for 10 years.

What’s your job?

I have worked as a science communicator since 1988 after a return from New York where I obtained my postgraduate degrees and where I was living and working in book publishing.

I became head of science communications at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Townsville and then established the CSIRO Discovery Centre - a multifaceted complex in Canberra where I was the director.

What brought you to this role?

My background was in graphic design and advertising.

My degrees in art, publishing, communication and business enabled me to work in science.

At CSIRO I was charged with showcasing and communicating science research to the public and for educating schoolchildren about CSIRO. What did you love about your job?

It was challenging and stimulating. Research for the good of humankind and the environment implies that there will be a positive global future.

What do you do in the community?

I visited Beechworth for several years to teach and organise botanical art workshops.

Since moving here I was one of the founders of the Mayday Hills Art Society.

It has art studios, a theatre, art library and galleries. We offer art talks and Café Scientifique conversations.

The mission is altruistic in encouraging creativity and the exchange of ideas, with its aim to be a centre of excellence in arts and sciences.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Since the pandemic our community appears to have become unsettled and dysfunctional.

There seems to be no spirit of positivity and combined passion for our growth and future.

We need to revive its heart and soul.

What would you do to solve, change or improve this situation?

We need strong leadership to help us identify what we all love about this place.

We can be empowered to dig deeper to offer kindness, support and acceptance to all those around us.

Rampant environmental destruction, poverty, human exploitation and suffering are creating a bleak future.

People’s skills, knowledge and creativity are being wasted.

People everywhere have a right to education, employment and the basics of a good life.

Angela Merkel because she probably needs a good, long holiday away from Europe.

I most admire her civility and her strength of character in showing other world leaders that compromise is indeed possible for the good of all.

She has humanity.

She showed the best qualities of women in leadership.

What would you show her?

This shire, with its rich blend of heritage architecture and a lovely natural and rural environment.

Australians can be dynamic and enterprising.

Living here offers benefits that far outweigh its drawbacks.

I would be proud to show her this interesting, beautiful part of Australia and discuss with her how we can capture the shire’s full potential.

At drinks Rovers were 2/44.

After drinks Dave Tolley provided the highlight with a direct hit run out.

Pat claimed another wicket bowled, before he trapped two batsmen LBW in his last over to return the great figures of 4/17 off 8 with the score at 7/84.

The 8th wicket falling at 8/113 with 16 required off three overs.

Brendon Thompson went for four in the 34th over, Pool had six runs taken off his first four balls, before a dot ball then a run out.

One over left, six runs to win off Brendon Thompson.

Rovers levelled the score but lost their final wicket caught Brandon Fitzpatrick at gully.

Pat McCarthy’s 4/17, Brendon Thompson also claimed 4/25 off 6.4.

Next week the A Reserve side travels to North Wangaratta to play Wang Magpies.

C Grade.

After all the phone calls and messages over Thursday and Friday, a side was scraped up, ready to take on Rutherglen in Stanley.

This was until a last minute phone call from Rutherglen at 11:30am on Saturday morning informing us that they didn’t have enough players for a team.

A very disappointed captain after putting in the work over the few days before hand was on the phone again informing everyone that there was no longer a game.

This week we will ring around again on Thursday and Friday and find an 11 to take on Yarrawonga at home again, this time at Mayday Hills.

Under 16s The under 16 side travelled to Wang to play Rovers.

The side was undermanned with the late withdrawal of captain Clancy Ellett on Friday afternoon.

The Wanderers won the toss and got off to a fairly good start with Cooper Roscouet retired 30 not out, Hunter North 28 and Shon Francis 16 all contributing at the top of the order. The team stuck it out well to bat the overs with only eight players and finish at 5/96.

Rovers showed their class finishing with 2/107 off 18 overs, with the top three batsmen all retiring not out.

The pick of the bowlers was Alex Beatson who claimed both wickets.

Next week the boys hope to have a full side back as they take on Wangaratta Magpies at home on Turf.

Under 14s The under 14 side met Rovers at South Wangaratta on Saturday morning with Rovers only able to find six

players that weren’t affected by the virus but Beechworth was more than happy to lend some players to the opposition to have a game.

Rovers won the toss and batted and compiled a competitive 5/82 off their 20 overs with Archie Balzer one of the fill-ins finishing with 4no.

The pick of the bowlers for Beechworth were Ted Ritchie with 2/4, Will Prebble 2/16 and Captain Henry Scalzo 1/9.

In reply the Wanderers had a 15 run win finishing their 20 overs at 7/97 with the main run scorers Henry Scalzo 25, Rama Schulz 17 retired not out and Ted Ritchie 16.

Luke Brough filling in for the Rovers had bragging rights over his usual team mates claiming 3/7 off his two overs.

Well done to both teams for still getting a game in, in trying circumstances.

It’s always good to do all we can to get the kids to have a game.

This week Under 14s have the bye.

Under 12s The under 12 side made the short trip to Mayday Hills to take on Rovers Green.

It was a tight game going by the scorecard with Beechworth finishing on 4/92 batting second after chasing Rovers 6/89 All players made at least two runs with a number of them retiring not out, in

what was a great all round team batting effort.

Luke Balzer, Charlie Pieper, Tim Young, Mary Edwards and Jobe Warner all claimed a wicket and Lenny McGill claimed a run out.

This week the Under 12s side takes on Benalla at home again at Mayday.

A Grade women’s On Sunday the Beechworth/WDCA A Grade women’s team took on BamawmLockington United at the BARR Reserve.

The home side was sent in first and made a great total of 3/139 off 26 overs.

Jorja Anderson 43 not out, Crystal Stevens 27 and Catherine Wood 26 not out were the main contributors with the bat.

In reply United could only manage to be bowled out for 67.

With Kaitlyn Ritchie 3/14, Emmaline Howard 2/8 along with Catherine Wood, Priscilla Jordan, Crystal Stevens and Jorja Anderson all claiming a wicket each in a great all round bowling display.

Well done also to Mary Edwards who is part of our under 12 side who made her debut in the women’s team and bowled well to finish with the figures of 0/8 off 3.5 overs.

Next week the girls make the long trek to Gunbower to take on Leitchville/Gunbower.

Aaron has last laugh in Summer Cup opener LAST Sunday was the first round of the Summer Cup. Aaron Haw (20) won the daily event with 36 points, runner up was Zane Howard (21) with 33 points in a countback from Vaughan Saunders (3) 33.

Jamie Dolny claimed a nearest the pin on the 10th.

This Sunday will be a stableford event; 12:30pm for 1pm hit off.

The second round of the Summer Cup will be in two weeks time on Sunday, January 31.

Remember that it is the best three out of four scores to count.

So if you didn’t play yesterday you are still in the hunt.

Thursday Twilight Last Thursday there was only a small field for Twilight on the front 9.

Warwick Deuis won the night with 23 points (20+3),

runner up and the winner of the Coffee Staines - Cafe & Carvery voucher was Andy Croome with 22 (17+5). Aaron Haw came third with 20 (17+3).

John Sheehan claimed his own sponsored nearest the pin on the 17th and Warwick Deuis claimed the cash for nearest chip on the 14th.

Tiny Stockdale claimed the Flippin’fresh Seafood Wodonga voucher in the raffle.

A big thank you to the members who have been active in the course keeping it in good condition.

Wanderers blow their chances QUICK wickets and dropped catches proved costly for Beechworth Wanderers A Grade at Baarmutha on Saturday against Ovens Valley.

After winning the toss, Kayde Surrey and Matt Ryan got the team off to a cautious but steady start, with the team being on only 13 runs after 12 overs thanks to some tight bowling from the Tigers openers.

Once the first change bowlers came on the run rate picked up with Kayde and Matt seeing the team to the score of 0/44 at the drinks interval after 20 overs.

Matt fell shortly after the break for a steady score of 20, Brenton Surrey joined brother Kayde and the pair put on 31 runs before Brenton fell for 21 with the score at 2/86.

A quick-fire 12 from Darren Cogger had the team at 3/103 when he fell but with Kayde still at the crease and plenty of wickets in hand a very competitive total was on the cards.

Ovens Valley’s Corey Southern had other ideas, and after Kayde fell for 48, Southern tore through the Wanderers picking up a hat-trick with Hamish Malsem, Cam Fendyk and Hunter North all going with the score on 111.

There was not much added to the total after that as the home side managed to bat out the overs and finish at 8/119.

The run chase didn’t start off great for the Tigers as Matt Ryan picked up the visitors captain Bursill in his second over with the score on 5.

Unfortunately the next wicket didn’t fall until the scores were tied at 119 and Ovens then passed the score with two overs to spare finishing on 5/121.

Again another missed opportunity for the A Grade side, something that is becoming all too familiar so far this season.

The pick of the bowlers was Shon Francis with 2/18 off seven and a run out. Matt Ryan finished with 1/18 off eight and

Hamish Malsem returned the figures of 1/29 off 8.

Next week the side is at home again against the top of the table Wang Magpies.

A Reserve A Reserve made a rare appearance at Mayday on Saturday on the synthetic.

After C Grade had a late forfeit in the morning and A Grade losing Rory and Clancy Ellett late Friday due to the C word, there were quite a few changes in the nominated side with a couple of C graders stepping in.

Rovers won the toss and

sent the home side in.

Captain Pat McCarthy and Dave Tolley were set the task of opening and weren’t going too bad, before Tolley ran himself out on 3.

Mat Jensen (also a late call up) came in at three and with Pat with both striking them well before McCarthy mistimed one and was sent packing for 11.

Jensen and evergreen Brendon Thompson steadied the ship, hitting some fine cricket shots before Jensen smoked one to midwicket for a well made 23 with the score at 3/4.

Zach Percy aanother late call up put on a great partnership with Thompson seeing the team to drinks with the fall of four wickets.

Thompson fell for 25 with the score on 92 and after some small partnerships with Percy from Sam O’Connor and Dean Fitzpatrick, Percy eventually fell for 32 with the score on 117, Ryan Pollock 7no and Jordy

Fitzpatrick 5no added some late runs to set the Rovers a target of 8/128.

Dean Fitzpatrick and Zach Percy were given the new ball and were proving rather difficult for the Rovers openers, beating the bat on numerous occasions.

It wasn’t until a change of bowling that the first wicket fell when president/captain Pat found the stumps and Brendon Thompson followed up with his own wicket with the ball being skied up in the air into the gloves of Mat Jensen.
